USA Today bestselling author Meli Raine rode her first motorcycle when she was five years old, but she played in the ocean long before that. She lives in New England with her family.
Oh boy things are really starting to move along! OMG and we find things about Mark that were a bit unexpected and finally their relationship is progressing along! Onto the finale!
I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
The first book i really loved reading. But this one just made it so much better ! Chase and Allie are back from the breaking away series.
SPOILER ALERT ( If you have read the breaking away series) !!!! It has everything to do with them and El Brujo and the motorcycle gang were Chase was VP. And Drew is coming !! (He's from the harmless series , i also loved that series!)
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG !!!!
This series is SO going in my best books list , but i suspected already before i started reading. Meli Raine is truly an amazing author ! So for this book also 5 stars , who would give less ? And for the author also 5 stars , she has yet to disappoint me but i don't think that will happen any time soon .
Why does the hero always have to leave without good reason, knowing that the girl won't listen to his warnings. So we pick up with Mark & Carrie once again trying to work out their differences from the past. Carrie still thinks Mark is responsible for her dad going to jail, and that he knows a whole more about the girls that keep going missing. Carrie has an altercation with Eric (a Professor) when Mark comes in and breaks it up, he thinks that Eric is part of the the ring kidnapping the girls. Carrie can't take all that's going on and leaves for lunch to find herself being kidnapped, but she's not it's just Mark trying once again to save her life. After Carrie hits her head and passes out she wakes to surroundings she isn't aware, thinking that she really is kidnapped. When she realizes that she is in Marks cabin, and they begin to talk and Mark spills the beans about who he really is and what he has been trying to do for four years. Once Carrie realizes that Mark is not who she thought, Mark tells her about all his feelings for her and how he wants to be with her. Mark has to leave for Washington and ask Carrie to stay clear of Eric, Claudia & her boss Dean Landau, but Carrie is put into the position that she has to come in contact with the Dean. The next morning when Mark arrives back home he tells Carrie to stay in her trailer and starts taking pictures of something out side. Once she is able to get out she is so shocked at what she see's that she starts to shut down like she does. When the cops arrive to find out what's going on Carrie is informed that the Dean has named her as the person who most likely stole his dog, and Mark is wanted for why Eric is missing. the Chief gives them one day and they leave to go visit Mark's brother Chase & his girlfriend Allie. They spend the night, have a wonderful night and when Carrie wakes up Mark is gone with a cryptic note left behind. Allie brings Carrie back to town and then Carrie gets the surprise of her life. So here I will leave you hanging, cause if you want to know what's going on then your gonna have to go grab a copy to find out. There is still a lot missing that you have to read to believe.
Boxed Whine So, the good news (if you read book one): Carrie doesn't whine as much in this one. She's trying to put her big girl pants on and make some decisions. But Waffle-Girl just isn't good at sticking with those decisions yet. She's still mighty reactionary and prone to let her emotions rule her. There's still a bit of the "I hate you! I want to climb you like a tree!" syndrome going on between Carrie and Mark, although it is getting much better in this story.
Basically, this angsty tale is best for younger girls who are more flexible for this type of personality. While I love a good story with great angst in it, this one just seems to miss the mark for me. I think my main problems are the lack of strength shown by Carrie and the way she lets her emotions rule. Nearly everyone gets caught in that trap at some point, but most of us don't live our lives that way, and I have a tough time relating to this character. The reader also needs a fair amount of suspension of belief since many of the finer points of the police procedural end of this story just don't add up well. So if you're a nitpicky reader who enjoys details, you might want to pass on this one. But if you're in it for the angst and steam, hey, go for it.
Let me say what I liked about this book: - Carrie was less whiny. Not completely whine-free, but at least less whiny. - The suspends works for me - Mark gets slightly more interesting, not interesting, but less boring than in the first book
But, seeing as this is a rather shortlist and I gave this book 2 stars, you can see it is not a good read in my opinion. I think the whole construct around El Brujo, drug and sex trafficing and innocents being caught in the middle of it is fascinating! But Raine just does not manage to get her characters right, and for some reason, in Meli Raine's world, characters let their actions be dictated by their sex drive. Which, considering the situation they are in, is always ridiculous. Some more depth and character development to make well-rounded, realistic characters would have been great.
I listened the audible version of the complete series. If I had read/listened to individual books I would have been very annoyed with the abrupt cliffhanger endings of the first two books. Since I was able to start the next book right away, it was okay. Overall, it was an interesting story that held my attention, though (phrased to avoid spoilers), I was surprised that one character would tell Carrie important information instead of sharing with their relative, and it did also raise question of how much would someone let their family suffer to reach a goal. The characters didn’t always act as I would have expected, but it was always interesting.
This series stands alone, but I’m sure it contains spoilers for the Breaking Away series. The characters from Breaking Away play significant roles in this series and the relevant history is included.
I loved the narrator and especially liked how she read it with the style you’d expect when talking to another person.
This is the second series I have read by Raine, and it only gets better. I am a super fan now. Again, I could not stop reading long enough to write a review for all three books in this series, so I am clumping them together. All I can really say is hold on to your seats. It has been a while since I read romantic suspense, and now I can't remember why, but I am sure glad that I started back with Raine. Return sets the stage leaving the reader confused just enough to snag you into book 2. By book 2 the plot begins to thicken and then it all goes to heck in book 3. Don't worry there is an HEA just be ready to be like WHAT!!!!????
Never really thought I would like a mystery book, but here I am, not only reading but totally engrossed in the story of Carrie, and all that has happened to her in the last 3 years. Her dad being set up for drugs, dying in prison, going back home, meeting up with the police officer that arrested her dad, which happens to be her ex-boyfriend. She accepts a job at the local college in order to search for information to clear her deceased fathers name of the drug charges. Her best friend gets abducted and Carrie dreams of Amy and realizes where she is, and finds her.
Mark is becoming a much clearer character - I think & hope! He's ex Special Forces & deep under cover but is he telling Carrie the truth now?? I truly hope so as their chemistry is smoking!!🔥🔥😉
Carrie seems to take two steps forward & four backwards 😞 Eric is Creeptastic, Claudia is a complete loon 😖 and the Dean ... What the heck is he up to? Why is he contacting her at the shelter etc Its weird & scary!!😳💀
I can't wait to get stuck in to book 3 to see how it all fits together!!😎🙏
This picks up right where book 1 finishes and we get more of the secrets unfolding. There’s a shed load of suspense and this is so well written. I love that although it is a romance the plot is full and meaty. We continue to see the relationship between Carrie and Mark develop. They finally reveal that they love each other and it will get you in the feels. We get hints at what might be happening behind the scenes and the darkness that may be right in front of the town’s eyes. I really don’t want to give anything away because this plot is thick with lies, deceit, misconceptions, miscommunications and just everything you want in a suspense book. It ends on a serious wait… what moment and I was here for all the little plot twists and turns.
A fantastic middle book in this must read trilogy.
The plot thickens with Carrie, Mark, Eric, Claudia and Dean Landau. Carrie's BFF Amy is missing. She looks like all of the other girls that are also listed as missing in the news. While Carrie is devastated by not knowing where her missing friend is, her love life with Mark is heating up. But now crazy things and bad nightmares are happening and the book ends in a cliffy! Onto the final book in this trilogy
This seems to be an issue I have with every book from this author: how the heck do I explain to anyone else what I just experienced in the book without giving away the whole thing. Every word, every action is carefully woven into a complex tapestry of intrigue and betrayal that kept me glued to the pages. Trying to describe any part of Carrie and Mark’s story would start to unravel those twisted threads and spoil the best parts of the mystery. Even knowing what’s coming, I’m dying to know more.
Finding out you friend has been kidnapped is not really the best news and finding her is going to be difficult as women who have been kidnapped have turned up dead missing body parts and trying to trust the man you love is difficult if he won't tell you everything it took a while to get into this one I just wanted answers but have to wait to book 3 for them so unfair
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Carrie's working for Dean Landau in the Arts and Humanities department and renewing old acquaintances. She believes he's the one who set her dad up to take the fall for his meth lab. Meanwhile her best friend has gone missing, along with a host of other women who all look similar. The suspense is ratcheting up, will Carrie listen to Mark and allow him to help her?
So Carrie's first week back in her home town isn't going well! Her boss could be a drug baron or worse. She's fired, accused of kidnapping and trying to kill a dog, her best friend disappears, and she gets a heavily redacted letter from her dead father telling her not to trust ... someone? Who can she trust? Book 3 is already open!
this story line is freaking me out. i love it but damn, it's just plain terrifying. it definitely is a page turner that takes you where you really don't want to go. really good job.
Have to scoop up Book 2 as soon as I finished reading Book 1. I just had to know what happened next. It was worth the purchase, and went right on to buying and continuing on to Book 3.
I thought there were a few minor issues with the story line, but I still enjoyed reading the series.
Truly a chill bump read. I can’t even begin to describe all the things happening but definitely worth reading. It takes time to start putting pieces together but when you do. You will never believe it!
Lots in intrigue, mystery... Continues the first book with lots of excitement, twists & turns. Some things you'll expect, with other things you won't expect, too...
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Beaucoup d'intrigues, de mystères... Suite du premier livre avec beaucoup d'excitation, de rebondissements. Certaines choses auxquelles vous vous attendez, avec d'autres choses auxquelles vous ne vous attendez pas aussi...
Oh my god this book is killing me in all the best ways!! It's an amazingly suspenseful, thrilling joy ride into some deep dark sh**!! Absolutely riveting!!
Yet another cliff hanger! Quick read. Looking forward to book three. Well written. Great characters. Great plot. Looking forward to reading more of her work
