Wreck (a standalone novel)

Some dreams die a natural, lonely death ... others get ripped away from the dreamer, torn and bloody.

Ricardo Sandoval, captain of an obsolete asteroid-mining ship, now reduced to merely prospecting for large mining conglomerates, still dreams of striking it rich and returning to his home planet a success, and rubbing that success in the faces of those who doubted him.

While fighting to hold onto that dream, he makes first contact with an alien intelligence -- an AI in charge of a badly damaged alien ship. The AI needs his help so the wreck can complete its mission; he needs the wreck for the fame and fortune it will bring him if he takes it home.

Only one of the two can see their dream come true, for time will not permit both to succeed -- and the stakes make it a life-or-death matter for both.

D.A. Boulter hates talking about himself in the 3rd person. Finds it annoying.

Since my early school days, Science Fiction and Fantasy have intrigued me, starting with Heinlein, whose Starship Troopers I read in the middle 60s, long before I knew about the social and political themes it carried. My seminal year, though, came in 1974 when I got my hands on a copy of Frank Herbert's "Dune", which fascinated me with its depth and breadth. At that moment I knew SF&F had hooked me.

However, it took another ten years before I seriously considered writing my own material and another ten after that before I began writing in earnest. Now, with the advent of e-readers, I find myself in the very strange position of being a published author, rather than someone who wrote for himself only. It gratifies me that many have read and enjoyed my works. Thank you.

I've worked as a cook, a first-aid attendant, weather observer, radar operator and tech. I've worked in the city, in the woods, and in the Arctic. Just now, I find myself on the West Coast of Canada, with my feline companion -- one of a line of cats who have shared my writing moments (and interrupted them as well).

Fast paced read

I heard a lecture by DA Boulter on the Escape From the Plot Forest webinar and decided to try one of his books. This is the first of his books I have read and it is as good as Heinlien orAssimov - fast paced, great characters and a satisfying ending. It has earned a place in my "keep" shelf.

A good read

One of the few books I really enjoyed reading. A nice asexual read, I recommend it. For reasons I don’t understand personal relationships seem to be completely off-limits in science fiction. I hope that changes.
