Oliver Optic was the pen name of William Taylor Adams, a Massachusetts schoolteacher whose magazines and stories for children reached a very wide audience from the 1850s through the turn of the twentieth century.
I'm reading this for the second time with my children. I've really enjoyed the encouragement given by the author towards godly character. The language is enjoyable, the descriptions are rich, and the character development is deep.
The presentations of evil are not enticing with the contrasts being stark enough where my younger children are driven away from the malevolent behaviors of the antagonists.
My audience for this reading ranges from 5-13 years old.
