The world of baking can appear daunting, but with Baking Imperfect, you’ll learn to get through the trials with joy and a newfound sense of determination when things go wrong (and they will!). Author and chef Lottie Bedlow—a fan favorite on the television show The Great British Bake Off—will guide you through dozens of tasty recipes with her trademark wit and easygoing nature, helping bakers of all abilities feel confident and comfortable in the kitchen. From easy cookies and puddings to more elaborate cakes and pastries, each recipe in this book will score points where it matters the most—on the taste buds.
I developed quite a crush on adorable Lottie Bedlow in the 2020 season of The Great British Bake Off, so I snapped up a copy of Baking Imperfect: Crush, Whip and Spread it Like Nobody's Watching when I saw it at my local library.
I found Lottie's snarky good humor instantly appealing, and as the season progressed, her warm and caring nature started to peek out. This same humor comes through in the book: Lottie's system of denoting a recipe's difficulty by ranking them 1 to 5 with an adorable cracked egg emoji is just one charming example.
The pictures are lovely - showcasing Lottie's trademark imperfectly perfect style, and when she summs it all up by saying, "When things go a bit wrong... who cares as long as it tastes good?" What could be better than that?
This would be a perfect cookbook for beginners, but also a great one just to add to your collection.
I enjoyed watching Lottie so much on The Great British Baking Show that I pre-ordered the book. No regrets! I want to try the majority of the recipes and enjoy the relaxed tone of the commentary.
My only complaint is that weights aren't given--flour and sugar are shown in cups. I prefer to bake with a scale as I find it to be cleaner and easier, not to mention more accurate. I get that she was trying to make it accessible for all, but I wish that would have been included in parentheses. But it didn't bug me enough to drop my overall rating.
Lottie Bedlow enjoyed baking and on a whim decided to enter a baking competition. Next thing she knows, she is starring in The Great British Bake Off 2020, and writing a cookbook. The cookbook is filled with her classic recipes and new ones created specifically for this book. Lottie hopes everyone will give baking a shot.
First, to answer the author’s question, yes I do read cookbook introductions. Second, let’s mention the adorable cracked egg drawings that represent the difficulty level for each recipe. There are, of course, gorgeous pictures of food, glossary of baking terms, and a list of what you will need before you begin your baking adventure. The recipes are easy-to-follow with helpful hand-written tips from the author. This book is great for beginners and dessert enthusiasts, alike.
My Mom and I enjoy watching baking shows, holiday versions, kid’s versions, etc. Baking is fun. I used to use it as a stress-release back in high school. Big exam, AP tests coming up, the kitchen would be filled that weekend with all sorts of desserts to be given to friends and family. I never viewed it as pressure, but then again, I was using it to distract myself. Now, I would get upset if something wasn’t quite right and that would have to stay behind and not be given to others, lol. (Funny thing is, I was not much of a sweets person.) I liked that this baking book, almost challenged you to accept the imperfections and flaws that happen with baking. The baking books I am used to following are very direct and don’t have much light-hearted wording. This was a lovely surprise.
Notes: I signed up to honestly review this book from Thunder Bay Press. This review was originally posted on the Ariesgrl Book Reviews website.
I absolutely adored Lottie's 'voice' coming through the pages of this cookbook, something that you rarely see with a recipe book is the Author's true commentary and accompanying thoughts and feelings. That's why I can safely say I 'read' this - which is hard to do with a cookbook!
I think anyone else who loved Lottie on Bake Off will really appreciate this is not your standard cook book, it has her trademark humour, wit and self deprecation, which I love about her and about this book, not tried out any yet but many I intend to.
