A tragic accident brings Dylan’s past to greet them in the most horrific of ways. His best friends die in a terrible car accident, leaving behind his biological daughter for whom he donated sperm. With her parents gone, she was sent to a foster home while the courts worked out where she would live. When Dylan finds out she is being abused he has her moved to a shifter home to keep her safe. That is until he makes the hard decision to raise her as his own, something he had never planned for and something he had never told Caleb.
Now that the past is their present, will the two be able to overcome this as they had everything else? Be the parents Olivia needs them to be? Or will it tear them apart forever?

This book is a good love story. It is kind of emotional, but I did enjoy reading the book.Dylan agrees to be a sperm donor for two of his friends. The ladies know that he is a shifter. He is newly mated with Caleb. He does not tell Caleb what he did. Eight years later, Dylan’s daughter is showing signs of being a shifter. The the hill’s mothers are killed. So now Dylan has to tell Caleb everything. Will their love be strong enough to make it through this trial? Plus there is a rogue shifter attacking and killing people. Dylan’s and Caleb’s love for each other will tested.

A not so typical shifter romance
I loved this book so much. Shifter stories were ones I was about to stop reading because I kept stumbling on ones that were cliche or poorly written. Hall redeemed them for me. This story isn’t just the tale of two people in love, or shifters and their territorial disputes. This story was about family.
I loved how the author portrayed both the good and bad side of foster care and how even if you truly, deeply love someone you can have major arguments that make you question yourself.
This was the first book I read from The Black Bears of Independence Series and I will absolutely be reading the rest.

What a wonderful story! I honestly have only just started reading stories with shifters in it, this genre, and I must say that Author K.R. Hall is my favorite so far. The story flows smoothly and I could almost feel the emotions of each character.
So many secrets to be revealed, so many obstacles to overcome. Can love be enough?
I would definitely recommend this book, and I am excited about the next one! Great job K.R. Hall!

“Wow, a huge shout out to the author for this amazing love story. Everything seemed chaotic and hopeless for Dylan, his past came to shake his present and now he must face what he did. Thankfully the plot wasn’t all angsty on the contrary it was a true love story. Dylan and Caleb deserved the world and have you ever heard that everything happens for a reason? You just have to read and see what I’m talking about. Highly recommended.”

This is an amazing story that will grab you and not let you go till you reach the end. This book has everything that you need in a good story. It moves along at a great pace, has amazing characters that you will fall in love with and a story that does not let you down. This book needs to be read, no doubt about it. So read it now.

I love Dylan and Caleb. The story was heartwarming and will tug at your heartstrings more than once. I could have wished for more show than tell but was still thrilled to finally get their tale.

After the war against Pickens, you would think things would quiet down and life could continue problem free for the Hurst Family Clan. However, past secrets are coming out and could ruin the happiness that Dylan has built with his true mate Caleb.
9 years ago, in the beginning of their mating, Dylan helped out an old college friend by donating his sperm to allow her and her partner the child they so badly wanted. His plan was to have nothing to do with the child unless they turned out to be a shifter like him, then he'd help through the first transition and go back to being a nobody. The perfect plan until Olivia's mom's are both killed in an accident on their way to Dylan.
For 9 years Dylan has put telling Caleb about what he did. He always thought he had time. But now time is up. Whether he wants to or not, he has to tell Caleb and hope that they can overcome this newest obstacle in their life that was unplanned and not necessarily talked about between them.
It's been a while since I've visited and reread the Independence clan books. Diving back in it was nice and fun immerse myself in the the love and care the author writes with these characters. I'm excited to read the next one and learn more about the cursed shifters who have been forced to stay in their animal forms and who is behind this.

Sweet, sad & loving
I loved Dylan, Caleb and Olivia’s story through sadness & pain a strong loving family was born. At times I thought there was so much build up of the warning that it was just abruptly solved it was kind of a let down. All in all a good story. I’m sure with this being book 5 more will be explained in another book.

Dylan, a cat shifter, is living a happy life with his black bear mate, Caleb. Tragically an accident takes the lives of his friends and leaves his biological daughter without a home. A daughter he never told his mate about. Can he handle the fallout that's bound to happen?

I absolutely love this series. Mrs. Hall is one of my favorite authors. The story flowed beautifully and the characters are relatable. Can the everlasting love between two shifters be enough to get them through secrets revealed? I definitely recommend this book and author.
I was able to listen to this on audiobook. Roland Parker did an amazing job being the characters to life.
