This book had a great premise and compelling characters, but a few things about this story turned me off.
This story takes place in college. The FMC is an introverted Latina, in her fifth year of completing her bachelor's degree. She lives off campus with her parents. The MMC is the star quarterback, known to everyone at the school. He's rumored to be a bit of an ass, but you learn throughout the story he, at some point, just decided to act the way others expected him to.
The story opens with the MMC deciding to surprise his girlfriend of three years by coming home from summer football camp early. He walks into the college party she said she would be at and observes her making out with one of his teammates in the corner. He confronts them and learns she's been cheating on him since he left because she "has needs." His teammate chases him as he storms away and insists the girlfriend told him they had broken up.
The MMC realizes his girlfriend never really cared about him and was using him and tries to take his mind off the betrayal of his girlfriend and his teammate. He also is feeling a little down about himself but thinks it's ridiculous to do so given who he is. Everyone wants to be him or know him.
He finds a site online where people post pictures of their bodies to get encouragement and decides it can't hurt to post his body and bask in the praise he knows his body will receive. Maybe this will make him feel better.
The FMC has a history of sexual abuse in her childhood and she used to be a frequent user on the site. She has many insecurities and most revolve around her body. She used to post nudes on the site to gain confidence. She stopped about six months ago, and deleted all her pictures, because of unwanted creepy messages but one of her friends from the site messages her about the MMC's pic.
The FMC comments on the MMC's picture and even though he has hundreds of comments, hers stands out because in the sea of comments about how hot and amazing his body is, she stated she had "seen better." She hadn't, of course, but she believed the MMC was not a real user and had used a stock photo.
From there, they start chatting anonymously on the site and they both find themselves drawn to and growing to like the other. At the same time this is happening, the MMC sits next to the FMC in the one class they have together, in an effort to avoid his teammates in the class, including the one who betrayed him. He continues sitting next to her three days a week during class and their friendship develops from there.
As this story progresses, I didn't like how the FMC would completely shut the MMC out and refuse to communicate with him, for WEEKS at a time, even though they shared a class together. That seemed unrealistic, at best, and, at worst, said horrible things about the FMC's personality. It really dampened my enjoyment of the book because, how can she see this man, who she supposedly loves, three days a week, and NOT try to talk things out with him? When he's trying to get her to open up?! It just didn't make sense.
During the first "shut out", the MMC didn't even DO anything to the FMC. They were making out at his place and she freaked out and left. She freaked out because she realized he was going to see her body if he took off her clothes. He tried desperately to talk to her in class, but she refused to utter a word to him. For an entire week! And he did NOTHING to her. One moment, they are making out heavily and the next, she is frantic, running out of his apartment and giving him the silent treatment.
I understand it's her insecurities but that's a horrible way to treat someone. By the time they DO talk, he'd already come up with his own theory on why she bailed and things take a bad turn. You see, he figured out that the FMC was the same girl he had been talking to on the site and, by this point, they had sexted. He thinks she knew the whole time that she had been talking to him and was trying to trap him someway.
They end up not talking for weeks because the FMC refuses to talk to him AGAIN. The MMC realizes very quickly he was wrong about her knowing, but she still refuses to talk to him. And there's another seven week no-contact stretch later on in the book. The lack of communication for long periods despite them seeing each other regularly is just inexcusable.
In addition to this, I understand the FMC had insecurities due to her past, but I didn't like how her insecurities were portrayed in this book. I found it to be unrealistic due to some of her actions and her inner monologue. Her actions of posting on the site and her inner monologue talking about how she knew she was attractive did not match up with her insecurities about her body/looks.
I enjoyed the main character's interactions when they didn't know who each other were but their interactions in person fell a little flat for me. I couldn't figure out why the MMC was interested in the FMC because she, honestly, was unnecessarily rude to him. I like a FMC who "doesn't take shit", but I don't like one who is unnecessarily rude. The MMC wasn't giving her a hard time or being a jerk when he asked to walk her to her car the first day he sat next to her, but she gave him an attitude about it like he had spit on her shoe. Her inner monologue later reveals she did this so he wouldn't realize she had been crushing on him for three years. This is nonsensical. Her crush of three years sits next to her and asks to walk her to her car and she decides to act like she hates him? So he won't know she likes him? All she had to do was treat him like a human being and not fawn all over him and she could have accomplished that feat.
On top of all that, I didn't understand why a big deal was made at the end about the FMC following the MMC, no matter where he was drafted. It was brought up multiple times and the FMC expressed she would follow him anywhere. The MMC even talked about finding a graduate school for her in the city they will be in. But then in the epilogue, you find out they lived apart for two years because she, in fact, didn't follow him. I'm not saying she HAD to follow him, but why the grand romantic declarations and discourse about her going with him when he's drafted if she's NOT going to go with him? It just made her character look horrible AGAIN because she didn't follow through on what she said she'd do.
Overall, there were enjoyable parts to this book, but when the most enjoyable parts are when the two main characters are interacting anonymously, that's not good for a romance. Their in-person interactions left a lot to be desired. Despite a lot of the book being about the MMC trying to convince the FMC she was "good enough" to be with him, I felt like the MMC deserved so much better than the FMC.
