He needs to find his father.

Dr. Nate Hunter simply wants to be left alone in his lab, but the disappearance of his father in the Alaskan bush makes that an impossibility. When Nate finds coordinates tucked away in his dad's papers, he has to take the investigation into his own hands to protect his family.

She needs to find a killer.

State trooper Freya Ashby already has a lot on her plate when she and her avalanche rescue K9, Xena, are assigned to Dr. William Hunter's disappearance. His son, Nate, is her last one-night-stand and a complication she doesn’t need … especially after she finds him standing over a dead man.

They are racing against the clock.

Battling the dangerous geography and an attraction that could derail them both, Nate and Freya must find Dr. Hunter before the trail goes as cold as the terrain. But as the clues pile up and point towards soft-spoken and insanely sexy Dr. Nathaniel Hunter, Freya has to decide if he is the killer…or the killer's next target?

Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Trope: ONS, forced proximity
Angst: 😱😱😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥

Northern Deception is the second book in the Northern Rescue series - one that follows three brothers in their search for their missing father. Dr. Nathanial Hunter is looking for his dad, but there's a serial killer loose and the number of bodies popping up around him has the police believing it can't be circumstantial. Freya Ashby, a local cop, knows despite their recent one night stand, Nate needs to be looked at, but feels certain that something is being missed.

What a great romantic suspense! Northern Deception has tons of action and twists and turns that will keep your attention to the end. Both Freya and Nate are characters with tons going on - both familial and personal issues that make dealing with their problems that much harder. It's awesome how they forge a path by supporting each other through their difficulties. Love that both books in the series have dogs in them that steal the show. Great read and can't wait to read the series conclusion!

Wow, I struggled writing this book. For a while, with my life falling apart around me, I stopped believing in myself and in happily ever afters.

Nate & Freya helped me to believe again.

I really hope you guys enjoy their story.

I feel sorry that Tonya Burrows had a hard time with this particular book because of her trying circumstances, but because it helped her believe in HEAs again...then it's even more understandable (and really noteworthy) why 'Northern Deception' was an absolute achievement given the context.

I’ve followed Burrows’s writing for ages, which makes ‘Northern Deception’ a very hard review to write as well. First, not just because I’ve gotten an ARC from an author whose writing/stories I generally like, but what then, do you do when every book in this series just hasn’t appealed (and probably wouldn’t, judging from the characters and the circumstances they find themselves in)?

Stories set in the extreme wilderness do tend to be a different beast and Burrows’s focus on the dogs and surviving the punishing Alaskan landscape is what for me, helps buoy the entire narrative.

But if I was lukewarm about Ellis/Brielle’s story in the first one, I outrightly disliked Nate/Freya because they turned out to be characters that I just didn’t feel anything for. In fact, Burrows does quite bravely write about the social problems mirrored in these rather dislikable characters—all the Hunter brother in this series just do not feel like credible ‘heroes’ as they search for a deadbeat dad whose cagey disappearance and a trail of dead bodies turning up help build a mystery that has yet to be fully solved. And this stubborn, utter loyalty to a family that has been dysfunctional for so long was unfortunately something I actually found quite repulsive and clearly not a sentiment throughout the books that I could deeply root for.

We see in Nate and Freya as victims of different kinds of abuse and neglect; it's both a given that they act out in different ways to Ellis/Brielle, though their tiresome issues seem like rinse and repeat, not unlike the many flawed protagonists in romantic suspense that I know many readers do yearn for and get.

Clearly this is a personal ‘rubbed-the-wrong-way’ kind of vibe that I got from the series that far; I’d hoped the second book could have had a different take on these characters but it clearly didn’t, which had me, quite sadly, not finishing it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and then this one came along and blew that one out of the water. I absolutely adored Nate and Freya, and their past traumas & current struggles made such touching characters. Now I can’t wait to start the third!

Wow, this series gets better and better. But why isn’t the cover of the book a redhead? And I thought Freya was a blonde?

My title says it all…WORTH THE WAIT…on the next book in the Northern Rescue series which starts off on a bang…literally…explosions…avalanches…bodies…murders….injuries….ice caves….survival and in the centre of all of it Nate and Freya. Nate is a veterinarian pathologist and has returned to Anchorage when his father goes missing. There is no love lost between these two, but he is still his dad and working on a clue found in his dad’s office, he goes for a trek in the mountains. Freya is a State Trooper in Anchorage and the two shared a night together, an anonymous night, so when she sees Nate again, he ends up in the centre of her investigation into his missing dad. These two were something that night and even months later, neither of them can shake the memory. Freya is a stickler for the rules and ends up following Nate into the mountains, thinking he knows something about his dad but instead they find themselves fighting to survive among the treacherous landscape and mysterious men who intend to end them.
Worthy of the wait!!! From the first page it is non stop, flipping till the end to see who did it, what’s with the men, the dead bodies, Freya and Nate’s aversion to love, how they navigate the sticky situation, the secrets, past history, what is Damien up to, what is with all the dead bodies, betrayals, who is framing Nate and why and their survival after being trapped and injured, the dogs, steamy encounters, emotional scenes….OH BOY
Strap in tight and hang on for a roller coaster of a ride that I didn’t want to get off of.

Loved the first book in this series but this one was just missing something. I guess I just didn't get the relationship between the two MCs. They are both damaged people in their own ways and use casual sex as a coping mechanism, swearing off any sort of relationship yet....they fall for each other. I think there was a missing opportunity when they were stranded in the wilderness for there to be some emotional depth there and a kindling of feelings but it felt a bit like they went from 0 to 60 in no time flat. From one night stand partners who didn't even do repeats to being in love. The author did do a good job with taking on very difficult social subjects

I also didn't love that Tage blew off Freya's "story" about there being - why would her own partner just completely disbelieve her?

And I thought it was unnecessary and felt a little over the top to also throw in a

That said, I was between 2 (it was ok) and 3 (liked it) stars and I rounded up to 3 - mostly out of remaining positive vibes from the first book and the interest in the mystery that spans the series.

I inhaled this book! It was so worth the wait. This is the second book of Burrows trilogy about the missing elderly Alaskan Veterinarian and his three sons searching for him. It was intense, action packed, heart stopping and delicious. I couldn't put it down.

Dr. Nathaniel Hunter is a forensic veterinarian who just wants to be left alone in his lab. He has mixed feelings about his missing Dad. Deep in his heart he loves him but Dad was such an alcoholic gambler, missing for much of his three sons lives that it's hard to care. He comes to support his older brother Ellis and figure out what the heck his little brother Damian is up to. When he stumbles across some GPS coordinates on the back of an envelope in his Dad's office, he goes out to see where they lead. Following behind him is his one night stand and State Trouper Freya Ashby. When he gets to the coordinates he finds a body, not his Dad.

Freya Ashby is looking into the disappearance of Dr. William Hunter. His sons are hiding evidence and hold too many secrets they won't share. She follows the frustrating Nate out into the wilderness to see what he's up to. She's fighting her strong attraction to the infuriating man. She finds him standing over a body and promptly cuffs him. All of a sudden there's a loud boom and they're caught in an avalanche. This begins a sequence of events that have to be read to be believed.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is one of the first series I've listened to where family is not trusting of each other, loving or loyal. They are so dysfunctionally damaged that none of them have faith for each other or others. It's very different with a never-ending litany of crippling baggage. I thought Tonya had started to write herself into a corner as there was too much mental anguish, I just had to listen on.
Tage is a jacknut. The storyline he follows is so typical for the black and white attitude of the police force, and I struggled to like him.
As for the h , I struggled to like, empathise, and admire her. She was too wishy, washy for me. Hop scotching from one side to the other, and then I did a 180, and I felt devastated by her story.
I was beginning to get frustrated with the plot, I needed to find out.
Tonya has done a great job of creating characters that evoked different emotions from me.
I just loved the dogs in each book. Especially peanut. But in this book, Xena is brilliant.
The H was a suprise character. In book 1, he came across as a quiet, somewhat damaged, pensive man. But nope, my eyes bugged. however, he became a pretty lovestruck alpha at the end
And then the ugly mystery reared up and slapped me. The twist was brilliant. My anxiety ramped up as it ended. But it still left a loose end.
I so enjoyed the way book 3 was introduced. I think Damien is going to have bigger twists than book 1 and larger turns than book 2.
Stephen Borne outdid himself as he added another characters voice to the series.
I'm looking forward to book 3.

Another great story for the series! Plenty of thrills and horrible things happening to the lovable characters. I really liked how Nate was a type of gentle giant, despite the dysfunction of growing up with his brothers. And I liked Freya's backstory as well, from how she became a SAR agent and how she deals with relationships. The story flowed differently for this one than the last because it felt like the first half was glacier adventures and the second half was murders with only the smallest of tie-ends at the end. I still like the story, but reflecting on it, the two separate halves of the story just don't fit perfectly together. I'll still finish the series because I'm invested in this dysfunctional family and their adorable dogs.
This story has swearing, steam, and some violence, with a bit of gore. And this one, no dogs are harmed on page, plus puppies!
This is the second book in the series, and technically has a self-contained story, but the overall plot of the series will be missed if the first book isn't enjoyed before this one.

I liked the narrator! He does a good job with the characters, giving them personalities and differentiating between the voices. I believe he narrated the previous story in the series as well, and I do like when the narrators are consistent within a series.

My Thoughts:

Just as with the first book, I couldn’t put this book down. Following Nate along the path to finding out what happened with his father was thoroughly engrossing. I loved the chemistry between Freya and Nate, so sexy and you can’t help but root for them. I am never disappointed by Tonya’s books. This is a fantastic series and I am very excited for the next book!

Absolutely LOVED Nate and Freya's story--this one had me on the edge of my seat, on the verge of tears, gasping out loud; good grief, I was all over the place on this one! And then a dog showed up on the page, and it was warm fuzzies all around...

I suppose it would be possible to read this one as a standalone, but I really wouldn't recommend it. The dynamic between the brothers is beyond complicated, and the mystery of what is going on with their father is still ongoing. Plus, you need more time with Peanut than just what is in this one (although you *do* get quality Peanut time here too, it's never enough). I waited waaaaaay too long to read this after the first one, but at least I could already jump right into book three, because OMG does it leave us in a I HAVE to find out what the heck is going on! place...

Will Fear Win Over Love

I was so excited to read Freya (my favorite Viking Goddess) & Nate’s story after how they were introduced during Bree & Ellis’ story. Nate is this strong protective man that is sweet and kind with a big heart although he’s closed himself off for years. Freya is the no nonsense state trooper that always obeys the laws and upholds them. Fate brought them together in a bar when they were both looking for just fun, but after that night they couldn’t stop thinking of each other. While looking for Nate’s dad bodies start showing up and the police, the FBI and even Freya’s partner Tage believe it can only be one person Nate Hunter. Is Nate truly capable of murder? Will fear keep these two apart? This story had even more nail biting moments than the first book in the series. I can only imagine what’s in store for me when I read the final book in this series, I can’t wait!!

With questions still surrounding his father’s disappearance, Dr. Nate Hunter follows a clue to coordinates and finds a dead body. Seconds later, state trooper Freya Ashby and Xena, her K9 partner, enter and demand he surrender for arrest. Before either can say or do anything, the snow-covered mountaintop explodes and they’re separated.

Freya searches for Nate and finds another dead body while Nate follows a familiar figure that may have set the explosion. Spying Nate, Freya follows him to a burning plane and explosives, before anything is said, they’re shot at by heavily armed and accented thugs.

Escaping, Freya and Nate are hurt plus lost, trapped and afraid relying on each other too much will fan leftover nascent feelings from a one-night stand. Freya and Nate make a discovery as SAR and FBI search for them. Meanwhile, each discovery picks at the scars of the brothers caustically dysfunctional relationship and hurt-filled formative years.

Tonya Burrows has written a fabulous romantic suspense masterpiece with Northern Deception. I was glued to the book from the beginning. I could not put it down. This is the second book in this series, and Nate is continuing the search for his father. State Trooper Freya is investigating the case. Nate looks suspicious, but she can’t completely believe that he is guilty. She continues to be drawn to him after their one night stand. This story is full of twists and turns, and it kept me in the edge of my seat. I loved it. Tonya Burrows writes excellent characters, and you can’t help but root for them. Nate and Freya’s chemistry is off the charts, and their love story has a sweetness to it. I can’t wait to see how the plot works it with the final brother’s story. I’ll be counting down the days until the next book!

The growl came again, followed by a woman's voice: "Nathaniel Hunter, don't move. State police. I have a gun on you and my dog will attack if I give her the signal. Put your hands on your head and back away from the body."

Nate did as he was told but risked a glance over his shoulder at the woman. He woman recognized that voice. "Freya?"

Freya, the cop he had a one night stand with and couldn't forget. And he did NOT know she was a cop at the time!

Nate's dad has been missing, murders are happening and his brother Damian is behaving completely out of the norm. So much is going on and it is not getting any easier. Or clearer.

Nate is a suspect, but Freya believes differently. She just hopes her personal feelings aren't clouding her professional judgement.

I loved this book. And I love this series. I can't wait for the next!

Northern Deception was a great mix of action and character development. The characters had more flaws than the typical romantic suspense. It could be read as a stand alone, but it does seem that this book builds upon the events of the first book and it sets up the next book with a preview epilogue. I'd give the story 4.5 stars. I'm not sure how I feel about the third brother (another flawed character), but I would be interested in listening to his book.

I listened to the audio version narrated by Stephen Borne. He was easy to listen to and did well voicing the male and female parts. The story is written in third person so a single narrator works well even though the points of view change throughout the story.

I received a copy of the audiobook at my request, and the opinions here are my own.

Was he being studied or the scientist doing the studying?

I love Nate, he is so very damaged by the horrific upbringing the Hunter boys had, yet he is still stuck in the middle attempting to keep the peace and make everything right. He has a quiet nature, until he gets to know people, but people judge and see him as cold and weird for working with the dead, it devastates me that a psychopath takes advantage of this and only Freya can see past this.
They both have twisted childhood's that overshadow their adult lives but the two of them together just work, they have a unique understanding of what the other needs, feels and hopes for that is beautiful to see. I both love this series, but hate the trauma they suffered as children, it is chilling to read but amazingly manages to be heartwarming too as they fight their demons and find a future together.
I read this on Kindle Unlimited.

NORTHERN DECEPTION Book 2 in Northern Rescue 3 book series. Each of the books are about a different brother. This is brother Dr. Nathaniel Hunter's story. He had a supposedly one-night stand with a beautiful woman he picked up at a bar. It was a surprise for him to find out that she was State Trooper Freya Ashley. She is the cop in charge of finding his missing father. Nate was not happy about this new development. Fate seems to play a big part in them becoming part of a team. This takes place in Alaska, and action-packed with lots of suspense. There is not a dull moment. I had already read the first book: Northern Escape, and now am looking forward to reading book 3: Northern Salvation next.

This second book of the Northern Rescue series is just as good as the first! Nathan Hunter is searching for his father. Freya is the local cop he had a one-night stand with thinking they'd never see each other again. But as the fates would have it, Freya is assigned the job of finding Nate's father. When bodies start turning up and the realization there's a serial killer in their midst, Freya knows she must look at everyone. Lots of action, lots of ups and downs for our H/h, and lovely romance! I can't wait for the final book!

This book is definitely best read after Northern Escape, the first book of the series.

Northern Deception by Tonya Burrows

This is book two in the authors Northern Rescue series and I highly recommend reading (Or re-reading in my case) the first book as it picks up where the last one left off.

Alaska State Trooper Freya Ashby is on the hunt for the person who is killing and then stashing bodies in the snow as is her K-9 partner Freya. With all signs pointing to Ellis Hunter who is searching for his father William. Who can she believe and how does Ellis's brother fit into the puzzle? The parts with Xena and Peanut a mini Chinese Crested dog with more sweater outfits than a human were very cute.

But when a avalanche and trying to navigate a ice cave to find a exit there's a lot of twists and turns to the story. But when the eventual killer is revealed you'll have to do a "Wow I didn't see that coming!"

This is a great second book in the series it continues the story of the Hunter brothers trying to find out what happened with their father. Only one of them seems to be working against the other two. When Nate is accused of being a serial killer Freya has to prove his innocence especially when he was trapped under a mountain in a cave trying to find their way out when the last killing happened. Now they need to find the real killer and make sure it's not Damian Nate, little brother. I look forward to reading the last book in the series and look forward to more from this author.
I received a free book from the author for a fair and honest review.

Nate has found coordinates in some of his father's papers and follows them leading to a dead body. Freya who is the lead investigator in the case of Nates missing father, decides to follow and its twists and turns, danger, a avalanche, Russians, diamond mine and two people struggling with their attraction to each other. And everything Freya has going on with her mother. Lots of action and suspense. And we got to see the dogs again especially Moonbeam. Can't wait for Northern Salvation to come out so we see what happens to Dr. Will and Damian.

A great thrill of a read with plenty of action and suspense. 2 main characters with sad back stories which made them hard to trust. They had plenty of heat and I could see they made a perfect couple. The mystery of the disappearance of Will Hunter continued and makes me want to read more! Great to see Ellis and Brielle along with my favourite, Peanut! The dogs are so integral to the stories and Tonya has described them perfectly. Overall a great book with everything I want to read in a romantic mystery suspense book. Roll on book 3 and the mysterious Damien.

Book 2. I have not read Book 1 or 3. Not sure if it matters.
I was gifted an Audible version of this book from the author through Story Origin. I am a little surprised the narrator is male when I feel the main character is actually female. Freya, the police detective. But he did a great job of presenting this thrilling romantic suspense. Lots of danger. An avalanche. An ice cave. Lots of mutilated bodies. Also lots of steam. Cute and smart dogs. And complicated family dynamics.
4 stars for the story. 4 stars for the narrator.

This is the second book in the Northern Rescue Trilogy, a Romantic Suspense. This Series has an ongoing plot, and we follow the three brothers in their quest to find what happened to their Dad. Nate and Freya's story is suspenseful, filled with danger, action, and twists and turns. Frey is smart, and storng. Nate is very handsome, and protective. The supporting characters are interesting. I loved the dogs! Stephen Borne did a great job with the narration. Now, I am looking forward to listen to Northern Salvation, Damien's story, the next book in the series.

Freya and Nate are fated but they are the only ones who are determined they’ll always be single. Nate is searching for his father and trying to protect his family. Freya is trying to solve all the things going on in the community but also figure out what Nate is hiding. This one is full of suspense and intrigue. I couldn’t stop listening to this one and I can’t wait to start the last book in the series to finally get all the questions answered. I loved the strong characters who don’t let life hold them down and the dogs always make me happy!

Alaskan Action, Adventure and Romance!!

I did not read/listen to the first book in the series, but easily caught on to the family dynamics, regional aspects and the beloved K9s. Veterinarian Dr. Nate Hunter is searching for his father. State Trooper Freya Ashby and her K9 Zena are also. As bodies pile up, both realize more is at stake here.

Avalanches, snowstorms, who to trust, impossible attraction, twists, turns and sizzle. Fast-paced and completely engrossing.
