Kindhearted Connie has been possessed by the ghost of notorious villainess Scarlett Castiel and forced to aid in her revenge. On top of searching for the truth about Scarlett’s execution, Connie is busy navigating her fake engagement to the intimidating Earl Randolph Ulster, petty noble spats, and last but not least—a secret plot that could undermine the whole kingdom! As more clues surface, the danger grows, and even Connie herself becomes a target. Who is really responsible for Scarlett’s death? And what exactly is the Holy Grail of Eris…?
They couldn’t come up with ANY other way to stop the group trying to start a war than to FRAME and EXECUTE Scarlett?!?
SERIOUSLY?!?!
And they have had TEN years to figure out a better way to stop the group and save their country and they are STILL bumbling around with NO idea on how to stop them?!?!
WHAT?!?!
They DESERVE to be taken over, 🤦♀️
Other than that, I LOVE all of the characters, but my heart BREAKS for Scarlett and Lily and I HATE Amelia and Krishna and Cecilia and despite the age gap, I SOOOOO want Connie and Randolph to do well.
So despite the incredible stupidity of the leaders of the country they are living in, I’m in it for the next book.
3.5 stars, rounded up because I’m in it for my ship, stars.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
We go back to the world of a cute blond girl haunted by a buxom woman executed under mysterious circumstances a decade prior to the events of the book.
This second volume features more of everything. More betrayals, more characters, more intrigue. I really enjoyed the pacing, which is not reflective of how long it takes me to get through. The chapters delve into backstories of characters we’ve heard of before, like Lily Orlamunde, and new players in the political games. There’s also a focus on the struggles of the working class, showing that the chaos has further reach than just petty rich people problems.
While there are villains in the sense of Scarlet’s antagonists, but there are much darker forces afoot. The crime syndicate of Daeg Gallus is a force to be reckoned with, being involved in threats and actual deaths of other nobles. It’s fascinating to see everything unfold, and the daggers and walls close in around on Connie, whose only crime coming into this story is being haunted by Scarlet.
It would introduce so many spoilers to talk more specifically about the title, but we finally figure out what the title refers to, and the conspiracy only thickens.
This was a good second volume for this Fantasy Victorian Noir series. Unlike the first volume, which felt somewhat episodic and disjointed, the various threads started to come together here and we finally learned the truth behind Scarlet's execution and what happened ten years ago.
On the other hand, I thought the two "Reminiscence" chapters dragged a bit and were not really bringing anything new to the story, and the "Rudy gets framed for murder" arc was not as well written as the previous ones and got wrapped up surprisingly quickly in the end, so the second part of the volume felt weaker as a result.
Now that the protagonists know the truth, I guess the story will switch to foiling the plans of the Sun Tattoo gang and preventing the war with Faris. This is moving faster than I expected, so I think the story may actually get wrapped up in the next few volumes for a change instead of dragging on forever as is usual for light novels.
OK I couldn’t put this book down it had me gripped I was into it from beginning to finish since I read book one I cannot wait for volume to three to come out I am so hooked I am going to buy the manga of this book I love the political aspect I love the intrigue I love the down dirty how they be doing people up in this book is so interesting the drama the character development the backgrounds of each character IM giving this a five out of five stars and I rarely give five out of five stars I love the series and I can’t wait to read more
I will say this, the second volume reveals what the Holy Grail of Eris is, but that isn't the end of anything. It's a beginning and the plot just becomes more intense from here out.
