This was an age-gap book close proximity insta. This was so funny and so sad all at the same time. I think the reason is the two main characters, Cordelia and Beckham along with Cedar, they are so endearing. You add in the Southern charm and sayings, and dang, it just all worked, including the total dysfunctional friends that are chosen family as the perfect extras. I loved Beckham’s mom because I believe she knew that Cordelia had grown up far too early. So her life experiences put her and Beckham at the same age, and she was spunky enough not to take Beckham’s BS at face value. She had lived through abuse where she had to hold her tongue and keep the peace, but not anymore.
When she reaches Beckham’s household, I feel it is just in time. He had been dumped about a year prior. His ex had signed off on his girls, giving him full custody, and run off with one of their group's best friends. This poor guy was so far out of his depth that he didn't know he was drowning. When she arrived at the house, it was in utter chaos. Toys were everywhere, Cedar was working with finger paints. She answered the door with her paint-laden hands, after repeatedly being told not to open the door.
She proceeds to hug the person at the door. That person is Cordelia, who jumps right in cleaning Cedar's hands, and getting her bathed. As well as, having her clean up all her toy mess. She then tackles the issue of Livie still only, being formula and not yet being introduced to baby food. (A scene you don't want to miss reading. Too funny!) However, not everyone approves of the possible pending relationship in the works and voices their discord rather loudly through their actions by sneaking out Christmas morning.
Using a hurtful way to get back at them, to get their message across. Both Beckham and Cordelia try to fight, the chemistry that rolls right off of them that everyone sees from across the room. Even Cedar notices that her household has changed and never wants Delia to leave because her daddy is happier, just like she and Livie. Cordelia Angel Sterling had just been dumped by her abusive good-for-nothing cheating fiance. Now granted she may have been a little excessive with the littering of the lookout posting paper she peppered the campus with.
So, I was glad she was able to get reinstated back at the college. However, so disappointed that her employment was discontinued because of the word of her abuser. For an activity done during off-hours that was not unlawful and with no charges issued. However, she was able to, after talking with her father, get a place to stay and work. She would be caring for two children ten months and four years old, who turns out to be one of her former students from Tiny Tots. Why would they take the word of the abuser over the word of a long-time employee?
I believe you will enjoy their organically charged talked-about sexual escapades to be had in the future but that eventually happens. Be aware: They do talk about her abuse and her communal disease from her abusive ex.
