This book was breathtakingly beautiful, and also incredibly dark and very intense. I absolutely loved it, and the best way I can describe it is “Young Adult Transgressive Fiction,” which I’m not even sure is an official genre, but is the perfect categorization for this novel. I was spellbound from page one as I followed the main character, Vi, as he navigated the treacherous waters of his dysfunctional family life. Both of Vi’s parents are narcissists and the characterization of the utter insanity that is narcissism—and how it plays out in families—was so spot on it was actually chilling.
I think what impressed me the most about this novel (which is really saying something since the whole book impressed me in so many different ways) was that complete almost eerie accuracy the author had in portraying the deeply sociopathic nature of a true narcissist. If you’ve never experienced this yourself and you’ve only heard about it, it would be easy to think that the person telling you the details might be exaggerating. Because once you really start telling someone else about the behavior of a narcissist in your life, it is seriously almost too absurd to even sound true. But I’ve had real life experiences with narcissists, and the way they were characterized in this novel is exactly the way they are in real life. I was really astounded at the author’s level of skill in bringing this off.
What I also really enjoyed was the pure beauty of the writing style. The author’s voice is fresh and raw, and honest. The characters felt so real, and the chemistry between the main character and his love interest was off the charts. That was also surprising, because this is a very dark book, but it also contains one of the best love stories I’ve ever come across.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves dark fiction, transgressive fiction, books about narcissists, and anything experimental or literary fringe. It’s phenomenal.
