Endless, Nameless

Rate this book
Vincenzo Lupo is growing up in a strange country, facing down an abusive family, and a culture he can't comprehend. His only goal is silent survival. But when his new friend Veronica confides that she's facing the same issues, they decide to do what any pair of hyper-intelligent, profoundly depressed, formerly hopeless teens do... they fight back.

"The squad car door creaks open. One of the grand defenders of the Boro descends. It’s that fish-lipped F-head that’s my mother’s “friend.” She’s two-streets over, unaware, I’d assume (though it’s not at all outside of the realm of possibility that she’s in on this blitzkrieg as well) of the freak show unfolding one-floor below.

Fish-F says something. The father nods, pointing up to my window.

I hit the deck like the Iranians are raining down dirty bombs from the heavens. Crouching and crawling to the closet, dumping out the box that once housed a basketball rim that has long laid in the local landfill.

Seven-Hustlers, two-Penthouses, three VHS cassettes, a stack of burned CDs and DVDs - copyright be damned - four half-filled boxes of Mars bars, a pocket knife, assorted household goods, five silent bottles of rainbow mystery pills, a satchel of green hybrid, an unopened box of thirty-six ChapSticks, three jumbo jars of creatine, and a manilla folder full’a the other green.

Too much to hide with no notice. Won't make it to the attic. Candy and Chapstick have the least value. Easily explained. Ditch em. Open the box, give them the scatter treatment. Magazines are expensive. Nine times six-bucks plus three, forty-dollar cassettes, DVDs will fetch a solid twenty-bucks a piece, creatine’ll go for at least a hundred’a’tub, plus a few hundy a piece for the rainbow selection… Eff-it, math makes my head hurt."

This book was breathtakingly beautiful, and also incredibly dark and very intense. I absolutely loved it, and the best way I can describe it is “Young Adult Transgressive Fiction,” which I’m not even sure is an official genre, but is the perfect categorization for this novel. I was spellbound from page one as I followed the main character, Vi, as he navigated the treacherous waters of his dysfunctional family life. Both of Vi’s parents are narcissists and the characterization of the utter insanity that is narcissism—and how it plays out in families—was so spot on it was actually chilling.

I think what impressed me the most about this novel (which is really saying something since the whole book impressed me in so many different ways) was that complete almost eerie accuracy the author had in portraying the deeply sociopathic nature of a true narcissist. If you’ve never experienced this yourself and you’ve only heard about it, it would be easy to think that the person telling you the details might be exaggerating. Because once you really start telling someone else about the behavior of a narcissist in your life, it is seriously almost too absurd to even sound true. But I’ve had real life experiences with narcissists, and the way they were characterized in this novel is exactly the way they are in real life. I was really astounded at the author’s level of skill in bringing this off.

What I also really enjoyed was the pure beauty of the writing style. The author’s voice is fresh and raw, and honest. The characters felt so real, and the chemistry between the main character and his love interest was off the charts. That was also surprising, because this is a very dark book, but it also contains one of the best love stories I’ve ever come across.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves dark fiction, transgressive fiction, books about narcissists, and anything experimental or literary fringe. It’s phenomenal.

I'm loathe to review my own book, but to balance out the two dullards who got the book for free, despite it NOT being in their normal genre, then leaving bad reviews, I feel compelled to bring balance to the Force.

This book is not going to be for everyone. It is dark and depressing and funny with pitch-black humor.

It is not for the You Before Me crowd. Nothing wrong with those books, but, please, don't chisel an author for a free book if their writing is the polar opposite of what you normally like, then leave poorly-written, childish reviews.

Want to read a dark, funny book that is unlike anything you've ever read? Get the book.

I got this as part of a giveaway, and I was not familiar with the author. However, from page 1, I was hooked.

There's something strange about his writing style... it draws you in, even during the repulsive parts of the book. It keeps you wanting to know more. The style is funny as hell, too.

It was not what I expected, at all. Really, the book's entire trajectory was different than what I expected. Really pleasantly surprised. New style, new voice. Love it.

Very strange book

It starts out in a stream-of-consciousness style of writing. Then it switches to normal writing thankfully. However, the storyline is boring and violent. Two kids whose parents suck become friends. They decide to become more than friends and try to help each other out of their home life situation. Not interesting.

Got this as an early X mas gift. Couldn't put it down.

The depth of detail about having narcissistic mother (and family) was just crazy

The plot moves fast even though we see a lot of introspection from the lead character. Made me laugh out loud several times and left me downright depressed in many others

Definitely a must read

I am in love with this book. Having grown up in a very similar house, with one narc parent and the other who is a sociopath, this hit home

The sad parts had me crying. The humor had me laughing, a lot!

I loved the relationship between Vi and Veronica. It was sweet, yet profound. Loved it.

Loved it even if it was brutally depressing in some spots. Made me laugh like hell too.

Never seen such a vivid and accurate portrait of living with narc parents

Powerful, stunning, haunting, and often hilarious. Dark and sick and funny. Weird, I know. But, this book is incredible.

Breathtaking from page 1. Got darker and darker, but I found myself laughing like crazy, too. Gripping, satisfying. 100% worth a read
