*3.5* I found it odd that none of my post-apocalypse reading friends have read or reviewed this book. I kept trying to figure out what the “progression military suspense” in the title actually meant. (I still don’t know)

This book reads like the author is pushing an agenda, but it doesn’t feel overly preachy. It’s kind of like spending a few hours with some of my prepper relatives.

Here’s the synopsis:

A Navy SEAL and his bride on their wedding night.
A middle-aged survivalist protects what is his.
Three brilliant teenagers who make a terrible mistake.
Coming together in one parallel reality.

This is called a parallel reality but it also is infused with current conspiracy theories (unsubstantiated facts?) to create drama in the story. The entire idea around the collapse of society is focused on our addiction to smart phones, government misdirection/smokescreens, billionaire globalist agenda, and ultimately the “jab.”

Everyone in this alternate reality is hooked on wearable technology called The Pulse. The government has just announced an update to the pulse (the jab). Some groups of people see this update as nefarious.

Once the nanotech infiltrates your biological system, you’re essentially hackable.

They believe it could be used by the government to kill off a huge percentage of the population with the flip of a switch…and they are not wrong. Those that had concerns and didn’t get the update, are the only survivors left in the US.

Here is an example of some current facts, flipped for this alternate world.

And the government had been poised to take our land. Just like that freak, Bill Hates, from a decade prior buying up nearly three hundred thousand acres of farmland—specifically located by aquifers.

It didn’t go as far into blaming a specific group for the downfall, but certainly mentions how a small minority of billionaires are manipulating and pushing an agenda.

This isn’t a light read, it has violence on page (rape and lots of death). There is one mildly graphic love scene, and loads of talk about women being ‘breeders’ which was disturbing. I guess in the context of needing to rebuild the human race, we would need some viable eggs/women. The book doesn’t explain why there are so many more men who survived than women, or why groups of marauding men feel the need to rape and kill women.

The flow of the story, and the way the author set up these chapters made it confusing and clunky to read. Each chapter flips back-and-forth between a different character and different points in time, so you have to read the chapter headings very carefully. It’s not quite as confusing as reading GoT, but you get the idea.

Recommended for fans of post-apocalyptic fiction. This isn’t a romance centered story, but there are a few couples featured.

First off this isn’t the type of story that I usually read but I love all the authors previous works and thought I’d check it out.

It had everything I’ve come to expect from Tamara Rose Blodgett, Alpha males whose banter brings that delicious wit and humour lighting the darkness of the overall story and fantastic world building.

Overall another great story from one of my favourite authors. With a well rounded epilogue.

Where there's a will, there's a way. 3.5 stars

I have a solid intuition that something bad is coming our way. Things aren’t the same. Not even close. Right now, it’s surviving and grabbing happiness in this new world. This is quite a different style of story to read for me, very different from my normal paranormal romances, but WOW! With her typical all-encompassing storytelling, Tamara/Marata had me glued to the book from beginning to end, even through all of the gore & awfulness. I did find it a bit disorienting to flip between the Now and Then parts, but it fits the theme and does help break up the surreal horrors that are happening. With characters that I became attached to, situations that seem so out-there but yet eerily not so farfetched, I couldn't have put the book down if I tried! I HAD to know what was going to happen next, were they going to make it, HOW would they make it, and what shape would they and the country/world be in by then? If you like these intense pre- & post-apocalyptic stories that truly seem real, with multifaceted characters that have you praying they survive, all encompassed in a truly well written novel, then you need to read this one! Tamara Rose Blodgett & Marata Eros do not disappoint!!)

This is such a phenomenal story about the true reactions of people that might happen post-apocalypse. It begins with high school kids, moves to military personnel, and includes several adults who are trying to survive after an apocalypse shuts down the communication grid. And it ends in a way that made me want to shed some tears and want to cheer at the same time.

Honestly, this explanation is too simplified because the relationships between these people are much more complicated. I was amazed by how layered the characters were and how vivid the scenes became as more of the story opened up. There was no need for zombies or monsters because it showed the reader just how much humans can become monsters in a crisis. It was just so well written that I wasn't ready for the end. I hope the author writes more like this one.

Absolutely fantastic read. The end of the world as these people knew it. Lives taken. Billions dead. Pulse technology. Scavenging for food. Starving. Most animals slaughtered. Homes overtaken. Women taken. Families torn apart. OMG, how scary to think of a future like this. Cannot wait for the next one.

Three bored teenagers hack into the power grid to see if they could. Little did they know there would be more dire consequences than no electricity.
The ending makes up a lot for what everyone went through. Have a tissue handy.
Although the story ends at a good point, there are situations that could be continued. I hope there is a second book for this story!

I liked this more than I expected.
Early on I thought same dreary, violent post-apocalyptic story, preppers against the scavengers.
Turns out this story has a really good cast of characters.
Looking forward to the next book in the series.
