A Drop of Magic: Ashuan Greed 1

Rate this book
Magic, Demons & High School Drama

All Lucille ever wanted was a perfectly normal high school experience, but her town doesn’t do normal. Not when a few Latin words set her hand on fire, the entire town gets possessed by evil spirits, and the cute guy she’s got her eyes on brings a freaking sword to the battle.
Now Lucille has to make a decision: return to her cushy, and safe, life-style at the boarding school, or face the monsters that hunt her and the magic that lurks inside of her.

A Drop of Magic is the first of this action-packed YA fantasy series with the wit of Buffy, the magic of Charmed, and all the drama of the Vampire Diaries.

This is such a good first book in this action-packed YA fantasy series. It’s a well written, fast paced and fun read that has a great plot and exciting and likeable characters. Filled with magic, demons and high school drama to boot this drew me in and held on tight till the very end. It’s a great YA read with a few surprises thrown in and I very much enjoyed it!

The book opens with Lucille’s first day at a regular school, after several years of fancy boarding schools. She meets the mean girls clique, makes googly eyes at a couple of hot boys, and discovers she’s the latest in a long line of magic wielders.

Although the reader is thrown into the story without much setting up, the world is easy to get into and the action is fast paced. Each section contains a different problem the rag-tag pack of friends have to overcome and new manifestations of power, and we eventually find out what the series arc/underlying issue is. Each chapter is told from a different character’s point of view, which helps to flesh out each character a little more.

Once you reach the end, it’s much easier to see the foreshadowing that’s been going on throughout the book and also that ending? I was expecting something like that but it was also quite the shock when it happened!! I’ll definitely be reading Book 2.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I had an arc copy of this book and its taken me a little while to write the review, though I enjoyed the story of this book so much.

The main female character, I just could not relate to and I found her very unlikeable however the connection she had with the other characters was lovely to read. The way they formed their friendship group and became a supernatural fighting force was perfect.

I found my favourite characters in the group came into their own towards the latter half of of the book.

The book is very fast paced, which I think is unusual for the first book in a planned larger series, perhaps because either is urban fantasy and doesn't need to world build so much. It seems rushed at the beginning with things happening all at once but it makes sense towards the end and the once settled as I continued to read.

I can imagine it being a TV series with the way the chapters are written, and when the author likened it to the likes of Buffy, Charmed and Supernatural she was not wrong! This is definitely the vibe and I really enjoyed it!

I would have given more stars to this book if the editing had been better. I found some sentence structures short and snappy and quite a few words that were missing from sentences (such as 'it just hasn't happened to yet, which is missing the word 'her' to make the sentence make sense.) Unfortunatly this isn't a one off and is very apparant throughout the book so it was difficult to overlook it.

That's not to say the book was written badly because the character arcs, the story and the magic lore, were written well.

I even cried and frankly if a book makes me cry it means I've connected with it in some way.

Will I read the next installments of Ashuan? Yes because I'd like to know what happens with the characters that I am fond of now - but I'd like to see some heavy editing on the English wording and grammar.

A drop of magic was a really fun read that reminded me greatly of the Charmed tv show. The book revolves around 6 friends who come together to fight monsters when their magical little town comes under attack. They each start to discover their own powers/abilities (even when they don’t want them) and must work together in order to face the evil that confronts them.

The book is quite fast paced and the chapters are written in an episodic way that makes you feel like it could be 4-5 episodes of a tv show which I quite enjoyed. And as all good tv series do, it leaves you with a cliffhanger that ensures you’ll be hanging for the next book!

As someone who doesn’t generally read YA fantasy books, I quite enjoyed this one and look forward to seeing where the story goes.

A drop of Magic: Ashuan Greed Book 1 by Janna Ruth

It took me a while to write this review, and for that, I am sorry!

I was given this ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

I have given this YA Urban Fantasy book 4 stars.

A group of unlikely teenage friends come together for the fight of a lifetime. Ashuan Greed Book 1 is full of action, mystery, tense moments and has cast of memorable characters.

When I picked the book up, I really got involved and found myself desperate to read more. The characters really came to life for me but some were more developed than others. There could be a reason for that though. The book is generally well written but I felt like there could have been much more description; I didn’t really get the sense of being there with the characters until near the end of the book but I still felt the last scene could have been described a bit better as I was left a bit confused. I understand the author’s intention, but I just couldn’t see the place in my mind very well and I have a feeling it’s important to the story.

As to the action! There was plenty there, and everything was resolved nicely enough. The action scenes had the best of descriptions and it did leave me on the edge of my seat a few times - and racing ahead to read more! However, I feel like there was too much action and the cast of characters never seemed to get a rest; again, I understand the author’s intentions but perhaps there could’ve been another way of doing this?

The intensity in this book was great. I loved being on the edge of my seat, feeling scared for the characters, or wondering “what is going to happen now?!”, just as with the action, there was quite a bit, but it was actually enjoyable for me.

The love interests were cute and it really brought me back to my own teenage years. I liked the characters’ attitudes towards relationships and it was nice to see a character who is open about their sexuality. It wasn’t cringe, and the other characters were accepting of it - even if they didn’t agree. There was some tension there for a certain teenager, but it was nicely done.

Overall, I enjoyed the story telling and I thought, on the whole, everything flowed nicely. But I just felt that at some points it was difficult to get through.

A Drop of Magic: Ashuan Greed Book 1 by Janna Ruth is out now!

This was a LONG read. I usually can knock out books in a day or so depending on size, but as much as I never wanted to put this one down, life interceded along with an injury that caused a lot of necessary sleep to happen.

THAT said, OMG, this book is amazing, the beginning of a series, that it seems is based on a German version that is written like a TV series with episodes (how cool huh?). So it looks like we have ALOT of books to come and I for one, can't wait!

The characters are numerous and all are important in their own way. We'll have a base 6 crew that will be dealing with the magic in Ashuan (Earth like) together to fix and protect. Matt is hot, Lucille is rich and stubborn, Sam is smart and resourceful, Jan is our token wild boy, Fabian lives by the rules, and hopefully will learn rules are bendy, Rachel has felt and faced loss, but she is now learning to be her real self. Together, they are going to do amazing things, I know it.

Warning, a little cuve thrown at you in the last page, but I think you'll see it coming anyways. Must read, great YA read for sure, so get reading and check out A Drop of Magic!!

*I received an ARC from the author for my voluntary and honest review.

Lucille has come home to Greenvalley from Boarding school in an attempt to get closer to her Dad and feel less like a stranger in her own home. Her world is turned upside down when she realizes that magic is not only real but she is a real witch. Along with her are childhood friends and exes Samantha and Fabian, twins Nico and Rachel and another newcomer to Greenvalley, Matt. They soon find themselves the town's only defense against monsters and magic.

So as a child growing up in the 90’s and early 2000’s this definitely had Buffy vibes. And it is written in parts, which gives it a very episodic feel. Like a weekly CW teen drama lol. But I loved it. Although like any good CW series the series finale dropped some major info to draw us back for the next season. Each character was written really well and I think with each of them getting to tell the story from their perspective it added depth to the story. Despite it shifting through 7 people (eventually) the story still flows easily. By the end of the story I was left wanting more. There is still so much story left to tell and I can't wait to read more of it.

If you are looking for a well written, fun and fast paced urban fantasy, then open this book. Janna Ruth has given us an unlikely set of heroes that find themselves in the middle of a magical situation. These high school students find themselves battling unknown magical forces while discovering some unsettling truths about their lives, history, town and reality.
As an older reader I did not expect to enjoy this novel, as I have found it difficult to relate to the main characters the further I travel from my YA years. And yet I found myself devouring it.
It is hard to explain the joy this book brings into the genre. One could compare it to the fun of Scooby Do, the character connections of Sabrina the Teen Age Witch (1996), the independent assertiveness of Buffy and the charm & visuals of Zena. And yet it is completely new and kept me guessing.
So if you are looking for a new series, this is a good one to try.

Starting at the cover and moving slowly through a book is one of the best things in life, and let me tell you I loved this experience.

The cover pulled me in and the characters glued me to the book. I finished it in a couple of hours because I couldn't put it down. It feels real, like you are walking down the halls, like this is your life.

Great writing style, wonderfully developed characters and a plot line that will keep you glued to your seat!

I will definitely recommend to my neices, definitely something they and other young readers will enjoy.

Thank you for sending me on a fantastic journey, making new friends and having fun!

Reading is my passion and this book is definitely in my reread pile!

I did struggle a little at the beginning but it didn't take me to really get into the story. I found the plot really gripping and at points couldn't stop.

Really well written! Enjoyed the plot and pacing, but found it hard to connect with the characters through the Multi-POV I did struggle to get into it at first, but once I did, it was amazing and I'd highly recommend reading it to those who enjoy urban fantasy with well-rounded characters.

Full Disclosure, I'm 64, I almost remember my high school years! I actually went to a school that has year or grade 13. I don't normally read fantasy, even though I do read and enjoy YA books quite a lot. But something in this book called out to me. I Beta read it, and I still preordered it because this book is finding a spot on my keepers bookshelf. A rare occurrence.

You know a book is a good book when you can relate to and enjoy the characters.
You know its a Great Book when you can relate to the characters and your heart feels their heart , your body relates to their movements and most of all, your guts and stomach twist your emotions together and soar to thier heights , follow their days, and tears open with their lows, leaving you completely wrung out as you bring yourself together, you have to remember and remind yourself its fiction. This, " A Drop Of Magic" , is one of those books. It envelops you with it's magic into the story.

When you start this book, make sure you have a clear schedule of at least a couple hours because this book will cause the toast to burn, the soup to scorch and the kettle to run dry. It's pure magic that
grabs you and absorbs you into the story as you follow Lucille, Samantha, Matt, Jan, Rachel, Fabian and Nico on their exciting journey in discovering the fantastic magic that is their destiny.

" A Drop of Magic" is book.1 in a series, but it's definitely a story in itself and stands perfectly as a stand alone. Completely suitable for ages 14yrs to 110yrs. All genders will enjoy this book. "Janna Ruth" has managed to write a book that straddles the line between genders, so its doesn't fall into the "chick flick" category. Compares favorably with "Terry Goodkind's" , " Sword of Truth" series.

In the past I have been used to reading books that were either written in third person, or in first person. What makes A Drop of Magic different at first glance is that each chapter switches between the first person view of one of the main characters. This gives an advantage to the reader in that they are getting the internal dialogue of each of the characters, allowing you to better get to know each of their stories as a part of the whole arc.

Taking that into consideration, Janna is weaving multiple heroes journeys into the origin story for the group of characters and the trials they face when the new girl (Lucille) joins the school at her home town. She wants to have a normal high school experience, but as fate would have it an encounter with her new classmates awakens an ability for magic that comes at the perfect time to help defend her town when evil spirts start possessing the entire town.

This book had me from the introduction of Lucille in the first chapter, the weaving of the group, and then the shared journey. I can see elements of Charmed when it comes to the introduction of magic themes into this book. I can also see parallels with Buffy the Vampire Slayer where the new girl comes to a new school, makes a few friends and is thrust into saving the town with the help of those friends.

I have already got the next book in the series on my nightstand, ready to continue the journey.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Welcome to Greenvalley High.

Lucille has made the decision to transfer from her super fancy boarding school to the local highschool of Greenvalley. She's hoping to have the normal teenager experience, while also spending more time with her workaholic father.

The story starts from Lucille's POV and after she accidentally and unexpectedly conjures magic in her hand the story explodes in a fast paced multiple POV story in which each character discovers something new about themselves. This band of teenagers fights together against supernatural forces unleashed on their town. While some of them seem to be able to keep their head on straight, others seemingly end of getting carried away with their new found abilities. Will they be able to keep it up or will the consequences of their actions catch up with them?

The fast pace of the book is what made me keep reading when I ended up so frustrated by the indulgence of some of the characters without there being an understanding of the consequences of their actions. Had the book been a slow burn I may not have finished reading it and I would have missed out on all the action that followed after.

Definitely a book worth reading for the lovers of this genre and for those that enjoy multiple POV.

The structure of this book is a bit different -- it's more so several novellas/short stories put together. When looking at the originals in German, this does indeed seem to be the case. Even so, there's an overall story arch, and it flows well, each part just concentrates on different challenges our protagonist group of teens face.

The protagonist are well written and varying. I loved to get the different views into their cases, though I usually prefer single view books. Some of them annoyed me, but even so I enjoyed reading their bits.

I thought the start was already strong, but the writing gets better throughout the parts. Was very eager to continue to the second book!

A Drop Of Magic by Janna Ruth is Book 1 in the Ashuan Greed series. This is a well written, action packed, page turning adventure with wonderful and likeable characters. There are 6 teenagers (Matt, Sam, Jan, Fabian, Lucille & Rachel) who want to fix and protect Ashuan. The story is filled with demons and magic. Am looking forward to the next in series to see what Janna has in store for these six teenagers. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary review.

Great story - but needs editing

I'm giving this 5 stars because the story and the characters are really exceptional. However, this needs some pretty serious editing. Wrong word choices, incorrect verb tenses and odd sentences are scattered throughout the book, which really is a shame because, other than that, I really loved it!

A Drop of Magic: Ashuan Greed 1 by Janna Ruth is a great book and I recommend. In this book Lucille discovers she has magic after saying a few Latin words. Now she and her new friends, and are now hunting monsters. This is the first action packed book in the series.

written in a way that reminds you of a tv show format in this genre, where each episode is a mini-adventure and a season of overarching plot points + character development. definitely reminds me of buffy in this way, and i probably would be a big fan of this if it was a 90s/00s show.
