Mysterious Creatures: British Cryptids: From Werewolves & The Loch Ness Monster To The Beast Of Bodmin Moor & Everything In between

Rate this book
Usually, when we speak of mythical creatures, it is with a sense of fear and forced secrecy perhaps born out of years of seeing people around us do the same. Food, language, sports, music, dressing are all aspects of our culture that we inevitably learn about in our daily lives and this knowledge helps us to connect deeply with other people and to recognize ourselves better. We are taught the stories of our heroes and past leaders and all the feats they achieved in their lifetimes as a part of our history. Yet, for some reason we avoid speaking or learning about all the other stories, the supernatural bits that makes the universe whole.
Mysterious British Cryptids is a book that has sought to explore the culture and heritage of the British people from a perspective not usually explored. Paying sole attention to the legendary and mythical creatures of the people of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the book carries its readers from one location to the other following the trails of these creatures. From the Loch Ness Monster of Loch Ness, Scotland to the Cornish Pixies of Cornwall, there’s a devotion to each creature that can be sensed by the reader all through the book. There’s also enough information contained within the pages of this book about all the features that distinguish from creature from the other and what distinguishes the mysterious from the regular.
Presented in a conversational and friendly tone, the writing of the book has made blunt some of the sharp edges of mystery and horror that otherwise trail the creatures explored in this book. Employing humor where necessary, I have been able to carry the reader to the darkest edges of our existence and back without leaving them with a lump in their throats to carry around for the next couple of weeks.
This book is part of the fulfillment of a promise, one that I made to myself to commit to telling the stories of people who have experienced things they cannot otherwise explain to others and a promise that I made to myself to help keep alive, these creatures that humanity so desperately want to silence. I wish that this book can be one, a validation to those who need it, a reassurance that they are not alone, that they are not crazy and that there’s a lot going on in the universe outside of what we are familiar with. I also wish that it could be a window of some sorts, giving unto others an opening into a world outside of them.
Whether or not you are a believer in the supernatural, this book is a useful compendium of stories and descriptions and names that you should remember and protect as a part of the history of the universe. Consider this your peephole into mystery. And just as a warning, do not expect all your questions to be answered. In fact, within this book, you will find more questions than answers.

The first thing to consider is how many cryptids are common to both Britain and the United States and then to figure out just why some occur in one place but not the other. Unfortunately, the book doesn't do this.

The book also points out that the scientific community views cryptids with disdain.

Both countries seem to have werewolves. Both seem to have some kind of 'lake monster.' The Loch Ness monster is discussed along with its historical background, a history of sightings and the possibility of identification.

In Britain you also have alien big cats (escaped from zoo? Misidentified?) a demonic black dog, the Grindlow, mermaids, brownies, pixies and various others.

It's interesting to see how the two countries are cryptid similar and cryptid different.

Cryptid Across the Pond

This is a great overview of mysterious cryptids from Britain and Scotland. Several famous ones are noted, the Loch Ness monster and Beast of Bodmoor to name a few, as well as many others you may not have heard of. Werewolves, black dogs, fairies, trolls and more are included, along with some sighting information and a bit of history. A fun and entertaining read. Be sure to check out his other cryptid books as well.
