This is a Clean Romance, and this is the 7th book in the K-9 Companions series. I have read and reviewed all the other books in this series but I think this book can be read as a standalone without any problems. The characters in this book were good, but I really wanted them to talk to each other more. I felt there was this weird dance the main characters were doing because they had judged each other without talking to each other. This is a cute story, but I just wanted more from it. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
In An Unlikely Alliance, Jalissa and Rider must work together even though they both carry grudges against each other. It was fairly clear to me early on that Rider mostly reacts to Jalissa’s mean comments to him, wondering what he ever did to her to make her hate him so much. He knows why he resents her, based on some things that happened in high school, yet he tries to rise above them and works to get along with her.
I felt sorry for Jalissa for much of the book, even as I cringed when she lashed out so often at Rider. She carried so much anger, bitterness, and fear that it weighed her down and was a big part of the reason she struggled with paralyzing anxiety issues.
This book dealt with some heavy topics including grief, panic attacks, forgiveness, and bullying to name a few. Yet the author was able to also fill the pages with wit and grace, while pointing toward the One who can help in both the big and little things of our lives.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is a Christian contemporary romance With a couple who had no intention to give love a chance They were enemies first, with snark and retorts, too But though they fought it love always shone through.
When funding is cut for causes they hold support The mayor challenges them to work together, so they ought, But can they collaborate successfully or is it too late With the animal rescue and teens be left to their fate?
A story where hurts from the past influence now Can they put the past away somehow? Jessica struggles to cope with stress but her K-9 Flo Is there to help and always seems to know.
A heartwarming story with God at the heart With forgiveness, acceptance and romance playing their part. Working together, bringing barriers down Will benefit them both - and the folk from the town!
For my complementary copy, I say thank you, As I share with you this, my honest review
Author Toni Shiloh offers another heartwarming story with all of the elements we love. An Unlikely Alliance has intriguing characters with realistic challenges, some adorable pets to sweeten the tale, and a lovely faith message woven into its plot. Yes, there is a promise of romance, but it doesn't come easy in this 'enemies to friends, friends to lovers' story. I often found myself frustrated with Jalissa because she's very candid with her disdain for Rider, but I kept reminding myself that she'd suffered a tremendous loss. Rider's attempts to get along and his unwavering faith are a joy to see, and I was truly taken with him! He's strong and loyal, and he isn't afraid to defend his beliefs when Jalissa questions God's presence in her own life. Will Rider's Christian witness be enough to influence Jalissa's journey to faith and acceptance?
An Unlikely Alliance is a delightful story and a perfect choice for fans of inspirational romance!
I received a copy of this book from the author. There was no obligation for a favorable review. These are my own thoughts.
Jalissa and Rider do not like each other, so when funding for the animal shelter and the SAFE program that Rider is involved in is threatened to be shut down, they are forced to come together for the sake of saving the programs.
They are as prickly as two porcupines with each other but as time passes, they get to know each other and understand each other's hurts, and inadvertently meet their families, all the while they are getting past the surface to get to know each other, and finding out they do have similarities.
I really enjoy this! This is my first book by Toni Shiloh, and I have another one coming up by her, so I am looking forward to that. Recommended.
Now I have to read book 1. Not because I felt lost, this was an excellent stand alone, but because I enjoyed this one so much. And I was so intrigued by the hints of Omar and Trinity's story. (The fact that they choose to be surprised about the baby's gender was awesome, since that's what we did!)
Two hurting people who treat each other like sandpaper while 'trying to be nice' to one another, and had me laughing more than a few times. But watching the become comfortable enough with each other to share their wounds and work through them was awesome!
Having main characters with such (STRONG) opposite views on whether something is too small to pray about vs praying about everything and having an ongoing conversation with God because he cares about everything that concerns us, was fascinating!
The subtle backdrop of unforgiveness leading to bitterness, and spilling out in unintended ways, and assumptions that whatever you're thinking/feeling/remembering should be obvious and everyone must remember it the same way really added depth to the story.
And don't even get me started on the dogs. There are some awesome dogs in this story, which, IMO, makes the story 5x better :)
I received a copy of the book from the author and chose to review it here. All thoughts are my own.
I’ll admit that dog stories aren’t my favorite, but author Toni Shiloh made this more than a dog story. A story of yes, an emotional support dog, but also of a woman learning to deal with past fears and to walk in forgiveness. Both Jalissa and Jeremy are well written characters who made me feel as if I were a part of the story, cheering them on from the sidelines.
Shiloh’s story shows us that first impressions aren’t always right. And by setting aside preconceived ideas you may be pleasantly surprised by the actual person. A great story of second chances and God’s forgiveness, I highly recommend it if you enjoy contemporary fiction. And please read the first book, An Unlikely Proposal. It will make An Unlikely Alliance an even better reading experience.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
From enemies to lovers, An Unlikely Alliance is about Jalissa and Jeremy, complete opposites. They are put in charge of the fundraising committee in their town to help raise funds to save not only their programs but several other programs. This story is one of hurt feelings, pain, fun moments, and forgiveness. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is book #7 in Love Inspired's K-9 Companions series. We first meet these two characters in Toni Shiloh's novel An Unlikely Proposal. They are the friends of the two main characters. I was glad to finally get to read Jalissa & Jeremy's love story. The mayor has just announced that funding for some of the town's projects will be cut because they don't have enough money in the budget. This includes the local animal shelter run by Jalissa Tucker & SAFE a mentorship program for teens where Jeremy Rider volunteers. The mayor picks Jalissa and Jeremy to head a fundraising event to help raise money. The only problem is that these two hate each other! She has him listed as Bane of my existence in her phone while he has her listed as Miss 'tude. Will they find a way to work together and raise the funds they need to keep their programs alive? Jalissa suffered a lot with panic attacks etc. Her emotional support dog really helped calm her down when her anxiety levels got too much. I gained a new understanding by seeing how Jalissa used her dog and other methods to calm herself down. Jalissa thinks Rider is arrogant and never takes anything serious. Always cracking a joke. The two just don't get along. If you like reading about enemies that find love. This book is for you! I also really enjoyed the faith found in this book. Jalissa learned a lot about faith from Jeremy. It's a beautiful novel of realizing first impressions aren't always what they seem, God cares about the small stuff, and that we are called to forgive! I hope you take the time to read about these two wonderful characters. It's a great story and even has a few dogs. What could be better than that? I was given a copy of this novel, but all opinions are my very own!
In her novel An Unlikely Alliance, author Toni Shiloh has written a lighthearted and sweet story that readers will adore. This story is about Jalissa and her emotional support dog. Readers will enjoy seeing the connection between Jalissa and her sweet dog. It’s also amazing to see Jalissa comes to know and falls in love with a firefighter, Jeremy, in spite of her initial reservations of him being a firefighter because of an accident her father was involved in. This is a sweet story about having faith, overcoming the past, forgiveness, and falling in love. Readers will want to be sure and read this story in the K-9 companions series.

When Jalissa and Rider discover that her pet shelter and the mentorship program he serves at are on the chopping block due to low city funding, they reluctantly join forces. With a lot of history between them, can they find a way to open their hearts to be able to give each other a chance to become friends…or something more? 🐾 This was a wonderful story of love, forgiveness, and family. I struggled initially with Jalissa’s character but the more we got to know her, the more I could understand her choices. This story handled the subjects of anxiety and grief well. Both Jalissa and Rider have experienced pain in their past and I thought the author handled these subjects well. My favorite parts about this story were the pets, Jalissa and Rider’s get togethers to help fundraise, the bachelor auction and when we get to see forgiveness being given. I loved getting to read this one, and would definitely recommend it! A book by Toni Shiloh is always a good idea! 🐾 I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
An Unlikely Alliance was such a great book! And such wonderful characters. Working together for a fundraiser for the community Jalissa and Jeremy will get past their own hurts to work together for their causes to raise money for the Animal shelter and Jeremy's Kids Safe place! This was such a page turner I picked it up and couldn't put it down! I would recommend this book! I was given a complimentary copy and this is my own honest opinion.
Can two people at odds with each other, work together to save the local animal shelter, and possibly give each other a second chance?
Jalissa and Jeremy find themselves in An Unlikely Alliance, working together to save the place that they are both so passionate about. I liked how Jeremy is strong in his faith, and his passion for helping children. Jalissa loves her job and doesn't want to see the shelter close, so if it means working with her nemesis she will do what it takes. It as fun to see how working together on the project of saving the shelter helped them to see the other person in a new light, as they shared their pasts, and discussed their faith.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read, with familiar faces from An Unlikely Alliance, as well as new ones in this stand alone companion novel. I loved how they both had good friends in their lives, as well as how they both work hard to make their community a better place. I liked learning more about emotional support animals and all the ways that Jalissa's dog helped her. A wonderful read for fans of enemies to lovers sweet romance!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Oh this story was absolutely wonderful. Author Toni Shiloh did a great job in this story. Doggies are the best second characters to have in it.
Meet Jalissa and Jeremy. Both with a hurting heart from the past. And both wanting to be far apart from each other yet their pains open up and their friendship blossoms. Their community is small, yet full of sweet family and doggies that melt your heart like Flo the golden retriever support dog. And Pongo who shows up later in the story.
As things start working out for them while doing some fundraisers to help the two dearest things to each heart, the animal shelter and the kids SAFE place. They try to work together and see past the pain of bullying and the sacrifices of losing someone in the line of being a firemen.
This story blends so beautiful with God's timing, his love and his forgiveness to us as well as toward others. You don't want to miss this story.
I received a complimentary ARC from the author. My comments here are my own and I was not required to leave one.
I liked this book by Toni Shiloh. I liked how Jalissa and Jeremy really don’t like each other at the beginning of the story because they don’t understand what the other person is going through. I like that as they got to know each other and trusted each other, their opinion of the other person changed. I liked that their was a lot of struggle as they learned to let God guide them and as they opened up their hearts to each other. I though this was a sweet story.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
Thank you to Harlequin Books and Toni Shiloh for the opportunity to read An Unlikely Alliance in exchange for an honest review.
I requested this book because I was seeking more...adult...flavored romance novels, and I read Harlequin novels as some of my earlier ones nearly half a life ago. Back when I first read Harlequin romance, I don't think there were quite so many subgenres. That being said, it is important to note that An Unlikely Alliance is of the Love Inspired line, books consisting of inspirational romance and uplifting stories of faith, forgiveness, and hope.
I am by no means one to pick up a Christian-based book (I am non-religious), but this one is certainly cute and, as indicated, inspiring. Definitely not the hot romance I was seeking to read, but an excellently written story about community and coming together with someone you might not really like, all to benefit the greater good.
Jalissa Tucker runs the animal shelter and Jeremy Rider works at an after school program called SAFE. Both, along with a few other businesses in the Bluebonnet community, are being threatened with defunding due to budget cuts. Jalissa and Jeremy are nominated as the fund-raising committee and must find a way to make at least ten thousand dollars to save the shelter and SAFE, and more--if they are able--to support the other businesses being cut.
Jalissa hates Jeremy and Jeremy hates Jalissa, and neither can pin each other as to why. For Jalissa, it involves the fact that her dad was a firefighter and died in an accident, and Jeremy happens to be a fire fighter. For Jeremy, he used to be bullied in high school, specifically by Jalissa's friend group, but she never stood up for him, only ever silently watched. These secrets hover between them as they try to work together.
Jalissa has her support dog, Flo, to help her through the anxieties of working with Jeremy. A firefighter-holding-pets calendar is their first fundraising idea, along with a planned bachelor/bachelorette gala to gain the funds they needs. They may need to look to faith and rely on God's plan to help them get through this pair-up.
Overall a thoroughly enjoyable and uplifting story about finding forgiveness and working together to save two important businesses in a community. An interesting insight into anxiety and how emotional support animals help (for those who are not aware), as well as the haunts of the past that follow us when it is so hard to let go. I have a few friends who would certainly love the tone and feel of this book. Recommended for animal-lovers, Christian readers, and inspiration-seekers!
Jalissa Tucker and Jeremy Rider have to put their convictions where their hearts are. And, they have to work together to help two very important programs in their town or lose them. Even though they absolutely can not stand one another. That makes this a fun read to see how they can pull of the fundraising to save a program for teens that is important to Jeremy and the shelter that helps animals where Jalissa works. There are some heavy issues each of the main characters are dealing with. They are believable and pertinent to contemporary life in a world with bullies and devastating losses. Anxiety and panic attacks are horrendous. It is hard to think straight when you feel like you are crawling out of your own skin and your heart will explode. I appreciate how author Toni Shiloh describes the scary experience. Fear of the possibility if things including disaster or loss is a powerful thing. It is something I have lived with along with the feelings from Jeremy's past and the mean character of fellow students in high school. She has done an excellent job. I liked this book and want to thank the publisher and NetGalley for the advanced reader's copy. This is my own personal opinion. It is heart touching. Plus, there are dogs! I love dogs. It is a blessing that there are support animals, medication, counselors and various ways to get help with panic or anxiety. You do not have to live with it on your own.
"Forgiveness isn't for the wrongdoer. It's for the wronged. To free them from the oppression of unforgiveness and ensure their heart stays in a state of humility with God."
Jalissa works at the local animal shelter. Besides being a firefighter, Rider also volunteers at SAFE - a place that helps at-risk teens. When they find out that both of their organizations' budgets are facing city cutbacks, they have to work together to raise funds. The only problem? They really do not get along.
Both Jalissa and Rider have experienced hard times. They both need to apply a heavy dose of forgiveness to their lives. Throughout the book, they both are transformed to be more like Jesus.
One thing I always appreciate about this author's books is the fact that she does not shy away from spiritual matters. Prayer is always a key component. This one also focuses on being able to let go of the past.
Those who enjoy pets will love this book. But those who could care less will still appreciate this title. Although it is considered a "K-9" book, I felt like the pets paid a proper role. In fact, one of them was a service companion.
Occasionally some of the details were overly repetitive. Jalissa is harboring bitterness for good reason. But she frequently dwells on the past. I know people can get stuck, but her issues were almost shared too often. That is the only issue that I had.
Overall, this was a beautiful book to read. Race relationships, bullying and anxiety are just a few of the topics tackled. The situations simply made sense. I really enjoyed reading this book which happens to be the sequel for "An Unlikely Proposal." (That is a previous title by Toni Shiloh. Although this is technically a part of a K-9 series in which the books are not really connected.) Both Jalissa and Rider were minor characters in that one, so I enjoyed watching them become main characters. Overall rating: 4.8 stars
I did receive a paperback copy of this book in advance. I wanted to read and review it. All opinions are my own.
I enjoyed reading An Unlikely Alliance because the characters were relatable and the dialogue was sharp and witty. Jalissa and Jeremy both had misconceptions about each other which led to conflict. Toni Shiloh did a great job of teasing out the relationship between these two showing the transition from enemies to friends and then lovers.
Readers will be reminded that God is concerned about every area of our lives...even the seemingly "little" things.
I received an advanced reader's copy from the author; a positive review was not required.
📚 Hello Book Friends! AN UNLIKELY ALLIANCE by Toni Shiloh is the 7th book in the K-9 Companions Series. Each book can be read as a stand-alone. I enjoyed this enemy to lover story. The mayor has just announced that funding for some of the town's projects will be cut because they don't have enough money in the budget. Jalissa & Jeremy have their differences, but they now must work together to raise funds to safe the charitable organisations they work with. This alliance will become more than just business. I enjoyed how they finally found a way to be together.
4.5 stars This was a great read! It took me a bit to read it, but once I really took the time to start it I really enjoyed it. An Unlikely Alliance is written by Toni Shiloh. This book is standalone but it does have some old characters from An Unlikely Proposal. I always love Toni Shiloh’s books so I was super excited to read this one! Jalissa was kind of hard for me to get at first. She was a bit abrupt and generally saw things only one way, but I grew to like her as I got to know her better. Jalissa was stubborn but she was also kind, she really cared for the animals at the shelter and she would do anything for them. I also liked learning about Jalissa’s anxiety and how it did not define her as a character, but how it did not shy away from it. Jalissa was rough around the edges because of her past, but she learned to trust God and what it meant to forgive. I thought that Rider was the sweetest! He worked hard to care for those around him and he had a heart for kids who had experienced bullying. Rider was kind and he worked hard, I liked how he tried to understand Jalissa and be open. His past made him wary of her but he was willing to put it aside to help the kids who had experienced bullying at SAFE. Jalissa and Rider had a rough start, they did not like each other at all. However they were willing to put aside their differences to save the animal shelter and SAFE. It was fun to read about them interacting and seeing them fall in love. They were enemies to lovers, and were drawn together by the same cause. The storyline was interesting and I was interested to see how Jalissa and Rider were going to be able to raise money in order to save the animal shelter and SAFE. An Unlikely Alliance was an enjoyable read! It was fun to see old characters too! I liked how Shiloh was able to weave faith and forgiveness so seamlessly into the book. I would definitely recommend this book! An Unlikely Alliance is a clean Christian contemporary romance.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.
An Unlikely Alliance K-9 Companions #7 By Toni Shiloh
Jalissa Tucker wants NOTHING to do with firefighters and when she is forced to work with Jeremy Rider she can't think of a worse fate. But to save the city programs that are about to lose their funding she'll make an effort.
Jeremy Rider uses humor to cope with situations, and as a kid who was bullied he needed to laugh off the pain he felt. Having to work with Jalissa isn't high on his list of things to do but to save the program that gave him a safe place as a teen he'll do it.
It is interesting to see how both Jalissa and Jeremy have misconceptions about the other and how this translates into their present day interactions. I think of the two Jalissa seems the least likely to make a change as the story progresses. But having to work together and getting to understand the importance of the programs that mean something to others allow each to see the other in a new light.
Can pains of the past be overcome by working together? And when a long-held secret comes to light, everything they have been working towards could be destroyed. The greatest lesson that they need to learn is that forgiveness is a two-way street, and without it everyone suffers.
Now this book is part of the K-9 Companions series and this time we meet Flo. Flo is a Golden Retriever who is Jalissa's emotional support dog. Following her father's death, Jalissa suffered from panic attacks, and having Flo allowed her to move out of her mother's home and live an independent life. This gave Jalissa a career in that she worked at the local animal shelter. Her appreciation of all Flo gave to her made her want to help other animals find homes in which they could help others too.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations, but that I provide my honest opinion ~ all thoughts expressed are my own.
He thinks she's too serious. She thinks he's not serious enough. But what will happen when they're both tasked with trying to save two different programs that each mean a lot to one of them? They can barely stand each other but the weight of a giant fundraising goal falls on their combined shoulders. All they can be is temporary coworkers and even that's shaky. Nothing more could possibly come from it.
I'm not going to lie, I almost rated this book 4 stars (which is still really good in my opinion haha) because enemies-to-more isn't really my favorite trope and Jalissa could be so mean at times, in my personal opinion. But holy smokes, the ultimate power of forgiveness and not only how it releases the other person but how it also releases you. When Jalissa experienced that moment, I literally almost cried along with the characters. It was so powerful. Jalissa did have so much trauma she was dealing with and it was great to see her learn to trust God with even the small things.
As someone who has multiple anxiety disorders, I did enjoy the representation of Jalissa having anxiety and an emotional support dog. I could definitely relate to the feelings she went through when a panic attack hit. So nice not to see seemingly "perfect" main characters. Because of course Rider had some things he needed to learn too. His past has him feeling like he's not someone people stick around for so really needs to trust that if someone seems to have staying power then they're not going to leave. I really suggest you read this book. It was very moving.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and I'm leaving an honest and voluntary review.
This is a story of two of the most unlikely people to get together that I have read in quite some time. Jalissa and Jeremy who are somewhat enemies, have been thrown together to work on a fundraiser to keep each of their charities that are close to their hearts going. Both charities are on the chopping block as their funding has been cut. But for the most part, Jeremy and Jalissa are willing to work together, even if they are gritting their teeth while doing it.
I found it humorous the nicknames these two gave one another in their phone contacts. Both could be very hardheaded, stubborn, and both were holding on to grudges that maybe should have been let go a long time ago. There is some real family drama that takes place as well that was of a serious nature, and I wondered if it could upend everything. The author showed how real healing could occur in just a situation.
So, as they work together, they begin to soften towards one another. And is it possible they could be becoming friends? Not only that but there are real feelings that begin to develop, but their road to happily ever after is certainly filled with chuck holes. These two really were fighting themselves most of the time. I enjoyed the snark they gave one another and was so glad for the lovely ending.
I received a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
I have always known of Author Toni Shiloh, but in all honestly, I have never read any of her solo books. I have read books that have her as a co-author, but I had never read one of her books. Well, I recently had the opportunity to read An Unlikely Alliance by Toni Shiloh and I was excited to read it.
Jalissa Tucker loves animals and especially loves her Emotional Support Dog. She has a connection to a local Animal Rescue center due to her love of animals and her Support Dog. Firefighter, Jeremy Rider, volunteers for a local agency that helps at-risk teens. Jalissa and Jeremy are not exactly on friendly terms, matter of fact they are enemies. They both learn that both the Animal Rescue and the agency Jeremy volunteers at will be losing the funding that is very needed to run the facilities. Jalissa and Jeremy decide to work together to raise funds for the agencies. Working together means putting the past behind and looking deep down at how the hurts from the past affected them. Jalissa finds herself actually falling for Jeremy as they spend time together. Will the pair be able to help their organizations? Will there be a Romantic Connection between Jalissa and Jeremy?
WOW, why have I not read any books by Toni Shiloh before?!?!?! I was captivated by the book from the very first chapter and did not put it down until I was finished. I really like how Jalissa and Jeremy began as Enemies but ended up working on a project together. I love how their passion for Non-Profit agencies and the pending loss of funding really bought them together. Healing took place and it made for a magical relationship. This book is Book 7 in the K9 Companions series, but I felt it was a GREAT Standalone. I have not read any other books in the series, YET, and the book flowed well. The book is about allowing God to heal hurts, helping others and so much more. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes Christian Romance. FANTASTIC BOOK!
Now I need to hunt down and Read many more books by Toni Shiloh!
Deep character journeys sprinkled with banter, chemistry, and adorable pets. The heroine's and hero's struggles were a little hard to read because my heart sincerely hurts for them and every real person who has walked a similar road. Characters are endearing and realistic. Love the small town charm and hope to return to this delightful story world soon!
As an owner of JustRead Publicity Tours, I received compensation from the publisher and/or author to coordinate a promotional tour for this title. I purchased a copy of the book and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.
Highly emotional goodness! With book seven in the K-9 Companions series Toni Shiloh brings an inspirational opposites attract to life in AN UNLIKELY ALLIANCE and I wholeheartedly enjoyed it! The characters were complex and emotions were high throughout the storyline.
Jalissa is one of those characters who almost makes it easy to dislike her with her stout venom against a guy like Jeremy, but uncovering the depth of her past trauma makes it easy to forgive and see where her emotions come from. I didn't like how she treated him for a good part of the book, but I understood it and enjoyed watching her overcome her judgements and truly heal her heart.
Jeremy is simply a sweetheart. He's good, he's wholesome, and he's forgiving. There wasn't a thing to dislike about this man.
I highly recommend this book as well as the entire series to anyone that enjoys an inspirational romance filled with love, laughter and healing.
This book was super sweet and enjoyable to read to kick off summer. Jalissa works at the animal shelter and has anxiety. Her dog is her loyal companion and helps her cope with the trauma she endured in the past. Jeremy Rider is a firefighter that works with a program that helps teens, the same program that once helped him. I really enjoyed these two and their chemistry. It’s an enemies to love story which is one of my favorite tropes! There was a twist at the end I was not expecting and I really enjoyed how these two came together in the end.
I stayed up wayyyy too late finishing this, but I just had to see how those tangles were going to work out! What really makes this book (and is just a hallmark for most Toni Shiloh books) is that it’s about more than just the relationship between the H/h. There are so many relationships to explore, each with their own layers. It brings such a feeling of authenticity to the world in the book.
