So so so good! If I had one critique and it’s ridiculous to be sure, Barnaby is not a name that inspires heroic tendencies. Personal opinion to be sure. But a good love story with a mystery is a gem.
Shirley Busbee's "Rapture Becomes Her" is an involving historical adventure featuring a lovely and passionate romance. Emily Townsend, a squire's daughter raised to be a lady, dresses as a man in order to lead a band of smugglers to provide much needed income for her family estate in Sussex. After her father's death, her cousin Jeffrey had assumed the role of squire and promptly squandered the family fortune. Having grown up with vivid tales of bold smugglers plying their trade in her local coastal village, Emily forms her own band of privateers, including some of her own servants. On one of the smuggling runs, Emily's boat captain, Jeb, rescues a nearly-drowned stranger from the sea. Barnaby, Viscount Joslyn, is newly arrived from America to view his inherited properties when an attempt is made on his life. Finding himself rescued by those on the wrong side of the law is just the beginning of Barnaby's adventures. When he realizes that Emily is the bold leader of the enterprising band of entrepreneurs, his attraction to her intelligence and spirit steadily increases. Emily has never met a man like Barnaby, a large, commanding figure who is also thoughtful and down-to-earth. Their mutual admiration takes them both unawares, and their developing relationship is a pleasure to follow. The action and mystery of the story line is first-rate. I particularly enjoyed the stellar cast of supporting characters who added the salt and pepper to the delightful dish of "Rapture Becomes Her".
Meine absolute Leseempfehlung!
The story of Emily Townsend and Barnaby Joslyn was a fun read for me. You have two story lines in this romance novel. The Viscount of Joslyn is coming to London to see his newly inherited home, land and also the the family yacht. When someone tries to kill him. You will also read about a band of smugglers who are lead by Emily. Not only will Barnaby and Emily paths cross on one faithful night. What do they have in common that someone is willing to commit murder for? There are some great secondary Characters to add to this fun read. You will think you have solved this murder/ mystery until you get to the end. There is one thing that bugged me. What does the title, Rapture Becomes Her. Has to do with the story?
The title of this book is terrible and belittles a really interesting story about the relationship of an independent English woman who is responsible for the well-being of nearly an entire village and a part-Indian American who has unexpectedly inherited an English title. Watching these two outsiders navigate the strictures of English society is really entertaining. If you like historical fiction and can get past the silly title, I suspect you might enjoy this book.
I liked how Emily had a strong personality and provided for others despite women's expectations for the time period set in the book, which if I remember correctly was the late 18th century. Barnaby, the love interest, was funny, didn't deal with BS, had a good read on people, and was described to be handsome in a more brutish way. This book had me hooked for a while, I loved how the characters gossiped and treated each other like family, and how there was a mystery in the middle of it.
I liked how Emily and Barnaby were enraptured by each other, despite how different their lives were. They're wholeheartedly attracted to each other and that leads to some scenes that had the air feeling thick with tension.
Here's where I spoil a little bit of the plot because it just irked me so much.
I got to the plot point where Ainsworth and Jeffery were plotting to force Anne into a marriage with Ainsworth because Ainsworth needed to marry if he wanted to be given good fortune and that's when I stopped liking the book as much. However, as I suspected how it was in the 18th century, unfortunately, forcing a woman into a marriage included raping her. Horrible to think about and naturally got nervous for Anne. However, what really pushed me away from this book, was getting multiple pages of Ainsworth's thoughts and plans on the matter, including disgusting descriptions of what he wanted to do to Anne and how much he'd enjoy it. I've never had a book make me physically ill until then. I don't know if all that was there for readers to understand how twisted of a man Ainsworth was or what, but it was pretty clear from the get-go he was a shit guy when he planned to rape Anne.
I thought all would be well again when Anne got taken away just for them to target Emily instead which led to a truly disgusting scene where Emily is immobilized and Ainsworth hurts her.
In my opinion that scene was only there to have a damsel in distress situation and that upset me so damn much that the rest of the book looked like word vomit to me. Ainsworth's attempt to rape Emily was never mentioned again, with seemingly no trauma left behind because of it, or anything. It was just washed over as if it was just another day. It's because of that I give it three stars because the plot was interesting to read, and the mystery and motivations were too, but the whole rape plot I feel like didn't need to be included. I especially don't think we needed details about Ainsworth's dark fantasies.
If you don't care about that whole rape plot point and want a good mystery romance, read this, but if you're easily queasy when it comes to sexual assault, avoid this at all costs.

I requested to review this title because I had previously read one of Ms. Busbee’s novels and thoroughly enjoyed it. Not to say that I didn’t enjoy this book as well, but I struggled a bit. Upon discovering that this book is the 5th in the series, I did a bit of research to find out whom the previous books were about. I was astonished to find that I did not recognize a single name in the 4 previous books. If any other characters mentioned in the blurbs were any part of this book, it was so fleeting that I never picked up on it. This puzzles me and now I am not much inclined to read the previous books. I am thinking that the Becomes Her series is more of a theme than of intertwined characters revisited however briefly.
That said, I found this book enjoyable. Ms. Busbee has a talent for writing larger-than-average books and never stopping to slow down one bit. From start to finish, something is always happening. Her characters are enjoyable and most possess a likeable amount of wit. Each has their strength and, opposingly, their weakness. But the characters together form a rather vivacious group that can’t help but be liked. Ms.Busbee has a knack for bringing together a little bit of everything within her characters and their interactions, which adds a great amount of depth to her characters.

Maybe it is just me, but I am still sitting here thinking “What the hell just happened?” I can’t figure it out. Maybe someone else knows and can lift this crap feeling I have at not having any idea why a book would be ended in such a way. Rest assured, I will be looking to see if any of these characters return, but at this time, hope seems futile. Maybe I just pay too much attention. In any case, this book is still enjoyable and packed full of action. As far as sexual tension, it is well written and what I would consider tame. Not a bad thing at all. I only wish the characters I enjoyed so much at first hadn’t become lost by the end and that more loose ends had been tied up. If not for my slight feeling of betrayal at the rushed ending and missing characters, I would have easily been able to rate this novel a 5. But my sense of loss will not allow it.

Rapture Becomes Her by Shirlee Busbee Historical Romance – June 28th, 2011 4 stars
Emily Townsend leads a secret life. After her father’s death, the family’s fortune and Squire-ship was inherited by her wastrel cousin who proceeded to spend all the money away on gambling and other vices. Left with no choice, Emily had to take drastic measures to protect her Great-Aunt and her stepmother. She heads a small smuggling gang to keep her family and friends afloat. On one stormy night, she rescues the new Viscount Barnaby Joslyn , her neighbor who has a habit of suffering from one deadly accident after another...
Barnaby is an American who somehow inherited his title. Upon his arrival in England, Barnaby keeps getting into accidents that he suspects are murder attempts. When he arrives at Sussex, Barnaby does not realize that he has somehow stumbled into a series of events that might be a bit much for him. In between courting the Amazonian Emily, protecting her and her brood from her villainous cousin. Plus dealing with his evil friend, and getting rid of unscrupulous smugglers who would do anything to stop him, Barnaby has his hands full...
A lively and brisk paced book, Rapture Becomes Her are packed full of interesting characters from Great-Aunt Cornelia, who is a gentle tyrant, to Lamb, Barnaby’s illegitimate and black half-brother who is also his servant. Thankfully, Busbee is a skilled writer who deftly handles the large cast without confusing the reader. For me, the best part were the villains: they are so nasty that you cheered for Barnaby when he beats them. They truly served their purpose by making me dislike them so much. The only problem I had with this book is that there are simply not enough scenes between Emily and Barnaby. As much as I like the large cast, I wish there’s fewer characters around because I want more interactions between these two lovebirds!
Entertaining and exciting, this is a solid historical romance with lots of action and likeable supporting characters.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I found it in the library and passed it over at first because the cover was just so cheesy looking to me. Once again I am reminded to not always judge a book by its cover.
There was a pretty good mystery, a nice love scene, a strong heroin and a handsome hero with overall pretty decent writing.
A lovely bit of escapism for a wintry Sunday afternoon. A very satisfying blend of passion, drama and intrigue with smugglers causing havoc on the Sussex coast. For fans of historical romance everywhere.
Found this at the library and i have read some of her older novels. Maybe at another time I would have finished it, but I just found myself speed reading, and I found it boring.
