At an age of twenty-five, I was finally ready to explore the world.
I was free. Out of my mother’s grip. Out of Cherrywood.
I never expected my new world would revolve around a grumpy forty-year old single-dad.
I was supposed to be a short term tenant in Keith’s loft. I wasn’t supposed to roam in his house, asking him to make me cinnamon latte, and become friends with his daughter. And most of all, I wasn’t supposed to fall in love with Keith Adams.
But if there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s break the rules.
Keith wants nothing to do with me. He’s still mourning the wife he lost years ago, and the ice around his heart is thick. He claims he doesn’t want love, and definitely not from a girl fifteen years younger than him. He says I need to figure out my life on my own.
But I’m gonna show him I can be what he needs. Even if he doesn’t know yet.

Second True Love by Vikki Jay is the First book in The Hawthorne Family Series. This book was absolutely adorable, but it was also extremely emotional.
Clementine's family is rich, the suffocating kind of rich. All she wishes is to live the life she wants. She finds a job and rents a loft space from Keith.
Keith lives with his daughter, Merida. Merida immediately falls in love with Clem. After her mother's passing years ago, she craves female company.
Clementine is quirky, a bit clumsy, and she wears her heart on her sleeve. Keith's the opposite; calm, calculated and no fun. He's still mourning.
Before he knows it, Clementine steals his heart. He wants her, but feels guilty just by thinking about it.
Second True Love is a charming and emotional romance with heart in all the right places. There's also a little bit of suspence roaming the pages.
This was a story about a young naive and former rich girl, Clementine, trying to find her way with a new fashion job and no money. Clem is 25 and she ends up as a roomie for 40 year old Keith and his 14 year old daughter, Mere.
I knew Clementine from the previous two part book the author wrote and so I was excited to read it. But it was so different that at times I was confused.
First, Vannessa Hilbert is the woman that Clem ends up getting a job with. If you read Loving Rose then you know her from that book and she is awful in that book. She is not an easy character in this story but she is not as bad as in that book. In this book Zach is mentioned but in Loving Rose he has no wife and in this book he is married to a woman named Hope who runs a bakery and she is seen many times in this book. I was very confused about the timeline of things because of Zach and Hope.
Keith's story was a bit strange to me too. He is 40, a widower since his daughter was 3 years old. So its been 11 years. But he acts like his wife is alive. When he kisses Clem he feels like he cheated on her. He has a photo next to his bed with his dead wifes image. He still has her things and he dusts it so it looks like just how she left things. Even his daughter is ready for him to move on and its a source of friction and in fact she comments on how they live with a ghost.
And then there is a big plot twist in relation to Clem and the wife, its a spoiler so I can't say much about it, but it got a bit much for me. The whole thing was a bit too much for me.
So what did I love about this book. Well I loved how Vanessa gave Clem a shot even though she had NO experience at all. I also loved that Clem was a fighter and she fought for her chance to do something with her life, even if she had no clue how normal life worked. I also loved how Keith helps her out from teaching her to cook to doing laundry. And if she needs help, he is there for her.
But my favorite part of this story was Clem and Mere's friendship and love for each other, even as Keith tries to keep them apart. I also loved when Clem saves Mere and how they end up finding her.
There is a suspenseful part to this story and I absolutely adored Clem and how strong she ends up being. Mere and her have this awesome friendship and relationship and its why I kept reading the story because I adored these two together.
I received a complimentary early release copy of this e-book from the author prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Clementine Hawthorne comes from a very wealthy very well known family with expectations on every aspect of her life already predetermined, so when she wants to venture off the beaten path and do things on her own her horrific mother does not agree. For years Clementine has tried to fight for every ounce of independence and while she is very naive about some things she is a strong willed person wanting to what she can for herself. My heart hurt for her because no one in her family would really stick up for her, none of them truly believed in her dreams, and they all were waiting for her to fail so they could coddle her and tell her I told you so. I was proud when she went out on her own moved into a new area, started a new job, and tried so hard at everything she did. When she moves in with the Adams’ she doesn’t expect grumpy Keith and his wonderful daughter Merida. She instantly befriends the daughter but Keith is still chasing ghosts of his past so he comes off hateful towards her. Keith also broke my heart because he carried so much pain with him. He was still mourning the loss of his wife ten years later and he couldn’t see that not only was it eating away at his soul, but it was taking away from his relationship with his daughter. When things happen and the tension rises between Clementine and Keith will Keith let his guard down to pursue it or will his pain be too much to bare? Can Clementine prove to herself and her family that she is fully capable of living her own life on her own terms or will they all still wait for her to fail? This story was a beautiful one about learning to carve your own paths in life and learning to live with the past never forgetting but living again. The characters were wonderful except I still despised her mother she deserves so much horrible things because she acts as if everyone, including Clementine, is beneath her. I also had issues with Oscar which I loved before, but in this book he was unsupportive when Clementine truly needed it, never took her side when it counted, and was one of the ones waiting for her to come home with her tail between her legs which was all disappointing because he seems like a great guy. In the end Clementine proved herself more than able to succeed in life and love. She was the light to Keith’s darkness and the happiness in his grief.
ARC review - SecondTrue Love by @vikkijayauthor provided by @greyspromo - Clementine wants out from underneath her mother’s suffocating expectations and to make it on her own, the only problem is she has no practical life experience so her brother asks a friend to rent her his attic. When Clem arrives at Keith’s home she finds a hot, older, grumpy man with a lovely teenage daughter. Keith has been grieving the death of his wife for 10 years and doesn’t know how to stop. This has made his life with his daughter Mere pretty lonely for them both. I must admit his grief made me feel a bit guilty, when my husband died I waited 4 years to date! and he felt guilty when he started having feelings for Clem. When she moved in with them she brought light & laughter back in to their lives. He feels guilty, like he’s betraying his wife, that Clem is so much younger than him and that her brother trusted him to look after her. At first Clem doesn’t really know what she’s doing but her professional life starts to go well and she starts to feel at home with Keith & Mere and realises that she wants Keith to be more than her Landlord, but he takes some persuading. I felt heartbroken along with Keith, but wanted to give him a shake and tell him that he was still alive, so start living! I was so glad for him & Mere that Clem (& a little other help) made him see this. I liked the element of danger caused by his work, but wasn’t a fan of the unexpected connection later in the book. I need Lukas’s story!
Oh My Angsty loving/ hating heart where are the tissues?
Vikki Jay you slayed my heart with this second chance at love / age gap / single-parent / grumpy and sunshine romance story. Sooooo full disclosure I'm not naturally a lover of deceased partner stories because.... Can you really have that one true love twice in one lifetime? Well.... Jay has proven in 'Second True Love' you most definitely can. 10 years on and Keith is still struggling with the loss of his wife / daughters mother. Will he ever open up his heart to love again? Enter the beautiful Clementine (aka Clem).
"She is like this sunshine while I live in perpetual darkness."
Clem and Keith took me on a heart-aching journey about loss, grief, anger, healing, letting go, and learning that every love is different but no less special. So if you are lucky enough to find it a second time around, take the risk and fight for it.
Having come from wealth Clem is a little innocent and naive when it comes to the real world (cue the awkward and hilarious life lessons), and Keith, you could feel his pain and anguish. I adored both of them and loved seeing the personal growth / transformation they went through.
Another truly beautiful story from Vikki Jay which had me laughing, swooning, crying and a little on edge during the suspenseful moments.
This is the first book I have read by Vikki Jay but it certainly won’t be the last. If you love second chance romance mixed with small town and single parents this is the book for you. This is the first book in The Hawthorne Family Series and this is Keith and Clementine’s emotional journey. Clementine has finally escaped her overbearing mother and found herself a dream job, she doesn’t need to work, she comes from money but we all know money doesn’t always bring happiness. Keith is still not over losing his wife 10 years ago and his life is all about around his 13 year daughter Merida who happens to be strong and determined and she talks her father in renting their loft to Clem. As soon as Clem moves in she brings sunshine to the grumpy single dad but these happy feeling are first since his wife’s passing and that leads to guilt. So what happens when Clem decides she want ps more from her landlord and more importantly will Keith allow himself some love and happiness…… Second True Love is a very emotional journey and at times my heart broke for this couple, I adored the quirky, clumsy Clem, my heart broke for Keith but it was Merida that took this book to another level. This book has something for everyone, it’s emotional, it’s romantic and once you add in a little bit of suspense you get the perfect read. Looking forward to reading more by this very talented author.
This is such a sweet story about moving on and being your true self. Coming from a rich family, Clementine has lived a sheltered life by no fault of her own. Even though their intentions were in the right place, her family held her back from becoming who she truly wanted to be. She had no real world experience but had dreams of becoming a fashion designer. Keith, who is a single father after losing his wife, cannot seem to move on from his loss. Not only that, he struggles with the idea that his daughter is growing up and not the little girl she once was. The attraction between Clementine sand Keith is not an instant burning love type of thing but it’s subtle undertones start becoming more and more prevalent. Second True Love is a story of personal growth and how that one special person can make all the difference. Another positive point is the relationship between Clementine and Keith’s teenage daughter Mere. She is a positive female role model that she needs. I really enjoyed reading this story. Looking forward to reading future books in the series. I received an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine and were not influenced by the author or her promotional team.

Clementine is finally getting the chance to experience life outside the overbearing nature of her mother and start her dream job. Keith and his daughter Merida are just existing and not really living since the death of his wife a decade earlier until Clem walks into their lives and turns it upside down. Is Clem’s presence in their lives for the best or is it too much for them?
Clem is the definition of carefree sunshine and Keith is the gloomy cloud on a rainy day. Keith grounds Clem and Clem breathes new life into Keith making their relationship complimentary and solid. This is a slow burn and hesitant relationship but once they are both all in it moves with ease and familiarity. Plus, Merida is probably one of the best supporting characters I’ve read in a while; she had so much individual growth as well as being a nudging push to Clem and Keith.
This is my third book by @vikkijayauthor and I’m really enjoying the world and cast of characters she’s created and can’t wait to catch up more with the Teager family in the next book out in June!
Thank you @vikkijayauthor and @greyspromo for this eARC in exchange for my honest feedback.
Second True Love by Vikki Jay is the First book in The Hawthorne Family Series. This is the story of Clementine and Keith. This is a story about two different people and who are also at very different points in their lives that slowly start to come together that find their pieces fit. Keith lost his wife about 10 years ago but hasn't really moved past their relationship. But he has a 13 year old daughter Merida , who is really is a strong little girl. Keith is talked into renting his loft at his house to Clementine. Clementine is a young women of about 25 who has a rich background and in addition has very protective family of her. So in fact she has been very sheltered working to learn how to be on her own. This move forward with her live was spun from getting a dream job as a Fashion/dress designer. Clementine is working to learn to be on her own and has some hits and misses. Keith is a first realizing that he made a mistake renting the loft to her but they slowly start to building their feelings toward what they both need. This was a really great story and I do plan to read more from this author.
Wow!! I haven’t read many by this author by I am already mesmerized!! There were so many different elements to this book that just pulled me in from the beginning!!
I had very low hopes Clementine and that had nothing to do with the author but the way I expected her to be and wow! The growth this character has is crazy and made me fall in love with her independence. She want to be on her own and do it on her own; some parts screamed naive but I held on and kept reading.
I think what saved my heart was the connection between Clem and Merida (Mere)! I was pretty intoxicated by their connection and the feeling of parent/daughter connection! I NEVER saw that last couple of chapters happening!! I really disliked Keith at the beginning too and his reaction to everything but I sort of understood where he was coming from.
Loss is something that stays with you forever and I felt everything during this book! I felt the missing pieces and the craziness of having to move on. I LOVE this authors words and ability to take something that I wasn’t expecting to become magical! I LOVED IT!! I can’t wait to read about all the group!! I NEED all of the group’s stories.
Second True Love by Vikki Jay was a fun, easy read. The story centered around Clementine Hawthorne's chance to make a name for herself rather than live on the coattails of her family.
Her family, while they all mean well (even her tough as nails Mom), they have kept her sheltered and away from real-world living. She is ready to showcase her design talent and prove that she can make it on her own. She seems woefully underprepared for the world as she sets out as a live-in tenant for Keith Adams. Adams works for a local security firm that deals with some cross-over characters from Jay's initial book debut books.
This story was a sweet coming-of-age story for Clementine and a sweet, somewhat sad, return to reality for Keith. Keith was getting along day by day having never really gotten over the loss of his first love. Merida is Keith's sweet, attention-starved daughter that helps Keith and Clem navigate their new connection.
Drama, family time, and a touch of steam set this story up for success. Looking forward to seeing where this series goes. @theoriginialmrsp

I can be his second true love.
Loved Keith & Clementine's story! Beautifully written and heartfelt. I was immediately hooked from the first few pages. As different as they are, they totally work!
Oh clementine 🥰. Her family have clipped her wings and wrapped her in bubble wrap her whole life. She leaves her family name behind to earn a job by herself and her dream job at that. She does this with little support.
Moving in with her brothers friends loft, she really finds herself but it’s not without a struggle.
Keith comes across as a grade a ass at first but he’s been chasing the ghost of his dead wife for ten years and slowly growing away from his daughter. Enter the ray of innocent sunshine that is clementine… she brings life back to Keith and Merida but not without a fight from Keith. I did shed a few tears during this book but I also laughed (a lot) Seeing them both fall for each other made me warm and fuzzy inside. I loved all the side characters and really wish Merida will have her own book (especially after that bonus epilogue)
I’ve been lucky enough to arc read for Vikki since her debut book, her writing just gets better and better. I can’t wait to see what she releases next
Having read Ms.Jay's The Teager Family books i couldn't wait for more from her! As soon as this one was announced it caught my eye right away! I picked it up as soon as i could and got into the Hawthorne Family world! I so enjoyed this story!
When i found out that Clementine was getting her own book i was so happy!
Clementine and Keith's journey pulled me in! These two are brought into each other's lives when Clementine moves into Keith's loft. Keith is still dealing with grief and Clementine is tackling things in her life. I couldn't wait to see how things would play out. I really liked getting to dig deeper with these two.
I loved how i felt so many emotions throughout with both Clementine and Keith! The realness shown throughout by these two was great. I adored Merida and what she brought to the story as well!
With Second True Love, Ms.Jay has created such a good read with feels! I can't wait for more from her!
*I volunteered to read and review a copy of this book from Grey's Promotions / the author*
I really wanted to like this book: with the age gap, roommates to lovers, single dad tropes it should have been my catnip.. but so much about this book bugged me. There were inconsistencies everywhere, and I felt that Clementine was a placeholder versus what his wife was to Keith. Its been over a decade and he's still so very depressed-- which I felt for the guy, truly.. but he let his relationship with his daughter crumble because of it. That poor girl was essentially an orphan, but hey, one therapy session and he was a brand new man. * sarcasm* I just didn't buy it.
And Clem really annoyed me with how naive and sheltered she was. The girl had no common sense or life skills-- heck, Keith's daughter took better care of herself at 13 than Clem was able to do in her 20s. It just all annoyed me.
This author clearly has talent, and I'm in no way trying to be mean.. this couple just didn't do it for me.
**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions **
I received this free eARC novel from the author and Grey's Promotions. This is my honest review.
I was very intrigued with Clemrntine's story when we met her as Rose's roommate, so I was very excited her story was next! I love her drive, her passion to live her life. Even though she was not quite ready to be out on her own, that did not stop her from diving head first into her new adventure and determined to succeed at her dreams.
I'm so glad she had Merida and Keith to help her along the way. And Clem helped the both of them to work the struggles they were going through. It was honestly meant to be, especially with that jaw dropping revelation at the end!
While Rose will always have a special place in my heart and probably always be my favorite, I definitely have a lot of room for all of Vikki Jay's wonderful characters! I am so glad I discovered this awesome author from the beginning and I cannot wait for the next storyline!
Keith will break your heart with his heartbreak. He and his beautiful daughter have been through a terrible loss and he's just trying to do his best to raise her. They were trying to survive and Merida his daughter is becoming more closed off than he would like. When a friend asks for a favor he knows it's a bad idea but it is only temporary. Clementine Hawthorn is just wanting out she is nothing like anyone in her family. She wants to do things on her own and become a designer. When an offer to stay in the loft of Keith and Merida's home she is grateful. However, Keith is kind of a jerk and has rules that she must abide by. When Clementine and Merida become close will Keith be able to stop it? What happens when Clementine's dream comes true but not the one she realizes she really wants? Clementine and Keith will grow close, but sometimes the ghost of the past has other ideas. Fall in love with all three of these beautiful people.
Second True Love by Vikki Jay is a delightful tale of two people trying to find their own way in the world, who wind up finding that way to and with each other. I love the variation on the grumpy one is soft for the sunshiny one, coupled with an age gap romance that brings Clem and Keith’s tale to life. Clem is a truly lovely heroine, whimsical and quirky, who really is so much more than she initially appears to be- to the reader and the other characters in the novel. Keith is the quintessential grump, lost in a maze of emotions created by a devastating loss. But this romance is driven by multiple forces beyond what Clem and Keith bring to the table. Jay throws in a bit of suspense, some family drama, and a twist at the end that brought serious chills and left me reaching for the box of tissues. I’m definitely excited to see where The Hawthorne, Teager, and Kings Security families take us next.
When something is meant to be there is no stopping it. Keith is a single father of a fiercely independent daughter who won my heart in this book pretty quickly. Clementine is a dress designer who is young and hasn’t done much of anything on her own. Clem wants to get away from her overbearing mother and make a life for herself on her own. When she gets her first job she rents a loft space from Keith and gets under his skin almost immediately. As these two get to know each other Keith has second thoughts about falling in love again. Between the danger that lurks around each corner, Clems family drama, teenager angst and starting a new job this book was very entertaining. I enjoyed the connection they shared and the talks they had about him moving on. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
I have been curious about Clementine's story since she became Rose's roommate. And I really loved and enjoyed it. Clem, Keith, and Merida's story is really heartfelt, sweet, and heartbreaking at times. My heart ached for Merida and Keith and I'm so happy that they've got Clem now. Even when she was only their tenant. She really is the light in their lives and what Keith needed to truly move on.
Clem and Keith pulled me in right from the start and I couldn't put their book down. Though I was kind of apprehensive of Clem's character at first. I didn't really like that she kind of come off as meek. I mean, she's bubbly and fun but she didn't really stand up for herself. But she's amazing with Merida and eventually Keith once he warmed up to his feelings for her.
I enjoyed their story. They're not Rose and Zander's level of story, but I still liked it. I can't wait for Zach and Hope's story though!
I really do enjoy me some cute and lovely book. This book has my favourite tropes: SINGLE DAD, FORCED PROXIMITY, AGE GAP!! This is extremely cute, and short. To be honest, i didn't find anything bad about it. The only thing that I hate it, which is why I didn't give a 5star,was that at points i felt that it needed a little bit more of a structure. But besides that, i feel like this is a great book for a weekend, a palate cleanser. There's drama, but not the kind where your heart start beating a thousand miles per hour.
I would honestly recommend this book , as it had it all. Great characters, their development, their relationships and hey! who doesn't want a 40yo man taking good care of you in every single way possible. And if you give me more of them, I won’t be mad at all 7 really love how good they are
Clementine comes from an affluent family who have protected her from a lot of the realities of life. She is determined to forge her own path which means pursuing a career in fashion and not only has she found a job, but she has become roommates with Keith and his teenage daughter Merida.
Although his wife passed away a decade earlier Keith hasn’t been able to move forward with his life. Clementine is everything he thinks he doesn’t want but her outgoing personality soon has her breaking through the walls that he has built around himself but are he and Merida ready to embrace a future with Clementine?
This is an emotional story about love, family and healing with just enough intrigue to keep things interesting.
Any book I’ve read by Vikki Jay had tugged at my heart. This book focuses on Clem and her wanting independent from the family name as she wants to make a name for herself, where Keith lost his wife and is raising his daughter Merida all by himself and is constantly worrying that she will get abducted and gives her a tracking device.
You can tell from the beginning that Keith does want to fall for Clem but you can’t help who you fall in love with (yes, he falls in love with his friend Oscar’s sister) and I took it as a sign from his decease wife that he can move on and love again!
I love that we got to see more of the other characters from the Teager family series. Love this book Vikki!!
••• I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review•••
4.5 Stars I've been waiting for this one after getting to know Clem in Rose's book. I was even more excited when I learned it was a grumpy/sunshine single dad romance. Keith broke my heart with his past. You could feel the hurt and loss rolling off him. He so needs a healing touch and happiness. He's been going through the motions of life until Clem comes into his life. I love Clem and her sunny personality. She's just what Keith and his daughter need. She brings the light back into their home. It's not an easy road. There were some hold onto the edge of my seat gasping moments in this one. Keith won me over big time with the scenes with Snowy. A man and a kitten will win me over every time. You need to read this one. Another winner by Vikki Jay!
Second True Love is another beautiful read from Vikki Jay and is the first book in The Hawthorne Family Series. This book was well written, enthralling, heartbreaking and humorous, all while having a sweet love story.
This is Clementine and Keith's story. She is a tenant in a unit above Keith's home, moving away from her controlling family to start her first-ever job. He is a broody widower, raising a 13-year-old daughter on his own. Two people who couldn't be more different, but along the way they catch feelings.
Wow I was so excited we were getting Clementine story. And wow this book is amazing. Her story is about growth. When she meets Keith and he is intrigued and confused about his attraction to her. This story is a standalone and so amazing. I cant wait for more from this group of characters.
There's beauty in the broken. Hope in the heartache. Love in the risk. Jay makes Keith and Clem a risk worth taking. From soulful emotion to heartaching romance, Second True Love turns the heart inside out while taking the senses on a magical carpet ride of love.
Wow a lot of emotions throughout, anxiety, grief, anger, lust and happiness. Plus the suspense from a few twist, holding my breathe eagerly reading trying to find out what happened
Absolutely adorable single dad second chance at love romance. This book broke my heart in places and then made my heart soar. Vikki Jay deals with the raw emotion of bereavement and losing a partner. Keith is 10 years down the line from losing his wife but seems caught up in a complex grief in which he is trapped and cannot move on from. He is emotionally closed and cut off from his daughter, Merida, while also desperately wanting to be bonded to her.
In comes the fabulously unique Clementine, who we've met as a side character in Rose's story. She wins Mere's heart and in the process captures Keith's too. Clem has her own identity struggles having been sheltered and protected by her family. She is finding her way forward on her own and overcoming her own issues on the way.
This is a heartachingly warm love story showing how complex grief can be and how there is no time limit to loss. But healing and new relationships can be possible. And your heart can be all the greater for having another huge love.
