Hell. A place where bad people are punished. Or the unredeemed. Or just a place we all go when we die. It's a word with so many meanings, definitions, and possibilities. Hell is the woman who encourages her stalker to go even bloodier just for her. Hell is the dog you hit when you're drunk and meet the owner in your own living room. Hell is the ringing of a cowbell after you kill your wife. Hell is your sick husband begging you to set him free of his pain. Hell is a place. Hell is a person. Hell is a feeling. Welcome to the eighteen different levels of Hell. Each one a little different than the last. Each one just as painful in a place where no one escapes unscathed. Come and look at All the Pretty Hells You See.
“Hell. It's almost a taboo topic. Some people believe in it, some people don't. Those who do tend to vary. Is it the nine circles of Hell like in Dante's Divine Comedy? How about the eighteen that some Chinese lore believes? Is it all fire and brimstone? Lakes of fire? Is it a place filled with darkness, silence, and dust? Are you burning alive by fires hotter than anyone has ever seen? Or is everything so cold, it burns to the touch? Is it in the center of the Earth? Somewhere else? Is it here? Are we already in Hell?”
All The Pretty Hells You See by Christy Aldridge is a pretty mad and sinister short story anthology. The writer’s imagination unleashed with this one. I won’t write about all of the stories but they stem from a demonic talking fridge (which had me giggling at the end) to a self-aware Wi-Fi connection. If you have a thing for horror, short stories, insanity, the occult, the supernatural, check this out. 💜
Thank you to Ms Aldridge for the eARC copy of the book!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a fantastic book of horror shorts. There are stories about love that somehow winds up tragically, there are stories about people in their 80s and people in their 20s, there are stories that will make you fearful and even a couple that might make you cry!
There's also some absolutely wonderfully absurd concepts that I loved! Talking pimple anyone? How about being terrified by a bell around a cow's neck? Or a spider that whispers in your ear and gives you a "great" (ie horrific) idea?
These and more are included in this book. You can tell the author has unleashed herself here and let her writing go wherever her mind wanted. And we are better off for it. I loved this anthology and highly recommend it.
I'm a fan of Christy's book covers, and it turns out I'm also a fan of her writing. This was a great collection of short stories. All dealing with different interpretations of Hell. My favorite stories were: 1) The Stalking Of Jane 2)Twisted 3) Cold Cuts The story notes were a fun added bonus. Can't wait to read more of this author.
I love a good Anthology. And this is defa good one.
This book is about Hell. Your version of hell, or someone else’s version. Everything can be hell depending on the person.
My favorite story was the one with the cow lol Another favorite for me is Black and Tara.
Hell can be losing your shit because of a cow, or because of a zit. Maybe 🤔 just maybe it’s because you want someone for yourself but can’t. Then what? Or maybe vines are your personally hell. This anthology has something for everyone.
Of all the pretty novels you see this horror collection stand out from the crowd.
The storytelling reaches all levels of hell with sparks of humor, madness & razorsharp personality. Aldridge is at her best when wrapping words around relationships and her lust for life (hell?) is like a steamy dark love letter to a former lover.
Fancy some milk? Don't ever look in the fridge and be damn sure to avoid cows at all costs.
A beautiful collection of short stories written in a vulnerable and raw manner that only heightened the experience. Really enjoyed, and that last night left a lump in my throat knowing it all too well and I think the right way to end the collection.
In August of 2018 I finished a novel, Six Months, by this young new author Christy Aldridge. With a gripping storyline and memorable characters, Christy became one of my favorite authors from the get-go. After three other novels and two anthologies , she still reigns as the "Southern Belle of Horror". Stephen King once wrote "Reading a good long novel is in many ways like having a long and satisfying affair...a short story is like a quick kiss in the dark from a stranger." With this latest anthology All the Pretty Hells You See, these short stories are more like going a round with Iron Mike Tyson. Every sentence is a body blow, and her ending to each tale is definitely a knockout. Few authors can master the novel and short story, but Christy Aldridge has become one of the new masters of the genre.
