Hope Bonnet did not experience a single moment of human kindness during her upbringing in 19th century Northburry. Being deemed repulsive by her mother at birth set the tone for her treatment by the entire Bonnet household. Abuse and ostracization filled Hope’s every waking breath until a chain of gruesome events and a shadowy savior offered her the opportunity to be freed from her tormented life.
Her despair turns to optimism as she takes solace in the guidance and ‘sound advice’ provided by her newfound savior, ‘Father.’ Will Hope do his bidding and reign terror on those deemed the cause of society’s ruination?
Is Father a figment of her imagination, or is she possessed by a dark beast that feeds on her unanswered prayers? Sound familiar?
Brigitte, "Gitte," Tamar was born in a small rural Oregon town. Growing up, she was enthralled by scary tales featuring poetic tones and consistently gravitated towards writing darkened narratives. In the different storylines, Brigitte explores the harsh realities of social issues faced by today's generations. This includes the dark outcomes brought on by peer pressure, addiction, homelessness, mental illness, childhood trauma, and abuse. She feels it is essential to share narratives that refrain from sugarcoating the topics society tends to shy away from.
4.5* After reading A Shadow by this author i had to read more. This is the 2nd instalment in the shadows short stories and i very much enjoyed this. I need to read the first. I knew from reading the kids story A Shadow that this author has huge potential to get to the guts of a spook factor in her writting. This is no exception.(see my review for A Shadow to see what i mean)
This story follows a womans haunting from a shadow figure whos bidding she chooses or has to do. What im impressed with is the authors way of enlightening us on the red flag warnings of poisonous relationships. The writting style has a gripping, gothic style horror. I love it. The scenes she sets and the detail makes for some fascinating reading. Through mental illness from ill treament this main character takes us on a journey to either justify or explain her reasons. There is method in her madness. I knew i would like this authors work from the start and i will be happy to read more. This story is goary and grim from start to finish and i would highly reccomend this if thats your thing.
Many thanks to the Author Gitte Tamar and Booksirens for an ARC. I lt was a pleasure to read and leave my honest review
Hope was shounded and disparaged ever since she was born. The people that were supposed to show her love instead showed her hate and disdain. Did this cause hopes mental illness or does she really have a dark shadow as a friend and mentor? Hopes deadpan commentary distortion of reality and the demure façade make for an awesome book. I can’t say anything negative about this read. A story like this takes real talent and I think this book started strong and ended stronger. The narrative was witty and clever and the plot so original. It was a real pleasure to read such a great story and one I hadn’t heard anywhere else. This author in the story is such a breath of fresh air and I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves historical horror and or stories of the mentally ill Bing let loose on society. Either way if you love real talent read this book it was so very good! This book was given to me by Brooke Sirens and I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review but all opinions are definitely my own. #BookSirens, #TheShadowsThatTempt
I enjoyed reading this suspenseful story. This is a new author for me which I enjoyed their writing style. This is a well written story where the characters brought the story to life. A story where what is happening is in question. Is it imagination or are you possessed. The problem is there is a beast that is feeding on unanswered prayers. What happens next you don't want to miss. This is a fast paced story that is full of spirits, action and great characters. This is an engaging story that was hard to put down. The characters pull you into their story with ease and keep you turning pages fast. I really enjoyed this story and I highly recommend it.
It appears that Hope never made Daniel's final dinner party in reality, but was plagued by it in her dreams each night.
Like Daniel, The Shadow leads Hope to murder those who it deems too depraved to continue with their lives. Hope is quite content to do The Shadow's bidding until the unthinkable happens. Hope realizes she wants 'out' when she meets someone who is not only handsome and well-to-do, but also seems to possess a good soul.
The twist when it came shocked me as it was the last thing I expected.
I received a free Advance Reader Copy of Shadows That Tempt through BookSirens and have chosen to leave a review.
I really enjoyed the first one, but this felt a little lacklustre. It was an interesting concept to follow on from Daniel's story, but I found this disappointing, especially the twist and the ending.
This novel explores the life of the only one left of the Bonnet clan, Hope. The ending was rather ironic in and of itself. The story seemed to drag a bit in the middle until the mysterious David appeared toward the ending which is the reason for the 3 star rating.
