Rate this book
Annie Ainsley’s grit and determination are a constant, just like her red power heels.

She has her sights set high on becoming the Chief Content Officer at the thriving media company that she has worked for since its inception. The only obstacle standing in her way is her nuisance of a coworker, Will Greenfield.

Will Greenfield has had one hell of a year.

With the demons of his past constantly nipping at his heels, he can’t bear to face Christmas with his family alone. Enter his work nemesis, Annie Ainsley, who finds herself in a similar predicament. Suddenly, the woman that he has teased mercilessly since the day they met might just be his golden ticket.

When Annie and Will agree to fake dating over Christmas, they see using each other as a means to avoid their own problems. Nothing more than a mutually beneficial business deal between coworkers. But when unexpected chemistry sparks, the heat between them an uncontrollable blaze, they suddenly can’t seem to stay away from each other. They quickly realize that their first impressions might have been a false start, one they need to reset the clock for.

As workplace issues collide with Will’s past to throw every hurdle imaginable in their path, Annie and Will are left to decide if everything they’ve fumbled through in the past is worth the fight.

I don’t know how Allie did it but I went from hating Will to loving him in just a few hundred pages. He won me over from being a cute dad and his ✨dirty talk✨Annie was a fun little spitfire who didn’t take shit from anyone, and I loved that. The two of them together created literal fireworks, and honestly once they worked out their issues, they were relationship goals.

The entire book was excellent, and it has quickly become one of my favorite rom-coms!

And yes I cried like a baby towards the end. These two have my heart, and everything was just so sweet.

This book was like The Hating Game mixed with The Spanish Love Deception, and I’m just obsessed. Congrats on your book, Allie!! So happy to be a part of this journey with you as an ARC reader. I can’t wait to read more of your work!! 💞

Thanks to the author for the ARC!
This was so sweet! I loved Annie’s spunkiness, and how she was not afraid at all to stand up for what she believed in. & WILL 😍 I’d like to marry him asap please thank you 😭😍

I wanted to hug him and his girls and just wrap that little family up in my arms. I’ll read any other beachside novels that come out 👏🏻

This book was just okay. It had a promising premise, but fell short. I found the shifts in narrative to be distracting. Will treated Annie really poorly time and time again, but got away with subpar apologies. It picked up about 3/4 in, but ultimately tried to do too much at the end.

Coworkers Annie Ainsley and Will Greenfield both need a partner to take home for Christmas this year, and even though their relationship to this point has been made up of practical jokes and hating each other at the office, they find out that there is a lot to learn about each other's lives over the long holiday weekend. When a visit to Chicago and Maine to visit their respective families reveal that there is a ton of chemistry between them, it's hard to balance family, exes, and being co-producers in a new office together.

If you like enemies to lovers and fake dating, you'll like this. It's a super fun read!! It runs into the same problem that The Hating Game did for me where there is a lot of focus on how tiny and small Annie is compared to Will. I liked the pacing of this and read it all in a single sitting. Some of the side characters are some of my favorites and I want a whole separate book on Lucas and Rachel just to find out what happened between them!

I am lucky to have received this ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review

My heart! I can’t with all these feelings. Will and Annie are perfect and this has to be my favorite book by Allie. I’m so in love with this couple, their vulnerability and the love they found in each other.

I would’ve devoured this book in one sit if I could’ve! The writing was so fun and beautiful, the plot kept me engaged with so many emotions and the romance was the sweetest and sexiest thing in the world. This story does have it all and more.

First, Will. I fell in love with him so quickly. He was a giant teddy bear in a tough facade. I loved how much he cared, how deeply he loved his family and how sacrificial he was regarding his daughters. He had the biggest heart and the biggest desire to make everyone happy but himself. The way he quickly realized how beautiful Annie was inside and out made my heart flutter, seeing him interacting with Annie’s family, learning the different sides of her that he didn’t know about her and falling in love with her strength and honest heart… aaaahhh my heart! I felt so angry for him several times, he deserved to be happy and I loved how beautifully he got to have his happy ending after so much heartache.

“I’m falling in love with you, Will. All of you. The man who picked me up when I was a broken mess on the ground, the man who was shattered himself, and the one that I see trying to make himself better each and every day.”

Annie was such a lioness. Protective, determined, a take-no-bullshit kind of heroine with a golden heart. I loved her so hard. She was the sweetest, most supportive person ever. The way she took care of Will and his brokenness had me squealing hard many times during the story. She was so patient with him, so giving ans generous, even with a broken heart herself she wanted to give it all. She made me swoon hard every time she would remind him of his worth and the man he was and whenever she would interact with Will’s daughters. I rooted for her from start to finish and felt so happy to see her exactly where she needed to be.

”I want to lay with you in the quiet, when the darkness starts to close in, and be reminded of the little bit of light there is left in this life. Because you were the only one to remind me, Annie. I can’t let that slip away again.”

I have to say I loved how smoothly things shifted between them. From annoyance and bickering to the most intense sexual tension all the way to a beautiful relationship built with trust, vulnerability and acceptance. Their chemistry and their bond was perfection, it was so well mixed with the work-related subplot. I loved the fact that even when they weren’t in the best terms, they were still able to stand up for each other and root for each other, strengthening the feelings and the love they were forming. The growth they both had during the story and everything they had to go through gave me exactly what I needed to get the biggest book hangover ever!

Needless to say, this book made me so happy. It gave me everything I was expecting and more. It was funny, sexy, sweet and the epilogue was the most beautiful thing in the world. The cherry on the top!

Can’t wait to get this paperback in my shelf!

A huge thanks to Allie Marie for gifting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review

“This sounds like a Hallmark movie. Do you live in an R-rated Hallmark movie?” “I’m starting to think it might be more of a Lifetime movie. Because I’m going to kill him.”

FALSE START begins as a gleeful romp through some of your favorite rom com tropes and evolves into a charming and thoughtful story of two people trying to build something together even as their professional goals, family obligations and past mistakes threaten to pull them apart.

Will and Annie are vicious work rivals who, unbeknownst to each other, are both trying to recover from traumatic relationship failures that have set their lives adrift. Faced with spending Christmas fending off worried family members, they strike a deal to be each other’s fake significant others for the holidays and discover new and very lovable sides to their long-time enemy… not to mention an undeniable and scorching hot chemistry between them.

(mild spoilers below)

This marriage of enemies to lovers and fake dating could’ve been stretched out into a pleasant enough tale on its own, especially with Allie Marie’s trademark humor and ear for dialogue. Instead, FALSE START digs into what really happens where the credits on the Hallmark movie would usually roll.

Back in their regular lives, Will and Annie are left with a new intimacy and affection, but without much of a foundation of trust and good communication. On top of their tempestuous history with each other, the wounds left by Will’s punishing ex-wife have healed wrong, and the damage done threatens to tear them apart despite themselves. The real “false start,” it turns out, isn’t their fake beginning – it’s the choices they made at the outset of their adult lives. And while it’s great to find the right person for a second chance, it turns out that’s not the same as accepting you deserve one. False Start is ultimately a sweet journey of two damaged people helping each other heal and making each other stronger, in addition to not being able to keep their hands off each other.

Was lucky to receive an advanced review copy of this one, and would strongly recommend any lover of romance novels add it to their shelf.

Annie & Will ❤️‍🔥

Annie and Will are co-workers for a blog that produces fun and heartwarming content. Annie has been working towards a leadership position for years and feels like Will doesn’t take her, or her goals, seriously. ⁣

When they’re both in need of support for the holidays, they decide to put their angry chemistry to work and fake date for show to their families. What starts out with avoidance turns into small glances, deep conversations, and the realization that sometimes the person who lives rent free in your mind is there because you love them, not because you hate them. ⁣

The true heart of this story is in the tender moments. The quiet times when there’s no production value or audience. It’s when Annie & Will actually see each other and break through the fog. They make kind gestures, they care about each others’ families, they have meaningful conversations, and stand up for one another. ⁣

They give each other space when it’s painful but show up when it’s necessary. They realize that being a team is so much better than being opponents. They have a genuine and lasting kind of love. ⁣

The best part of this story is that they don’t change as people, but really grow as a couple. They face adversity & deal with it. They navigate difficult situations & come out on the other side together.

Not only are Annie & Will great characters, but so other the side characters. They bring so much life to this story & are part of their relationship. The book is rich with real life & beauty.

I hope you read this book and enjoy it as much as I did. Keep doing what you’re doing, Allie - I’ll be here to keep reading!

Unlikely Workplace Romance

This was a really cute rom-com that wasn’t entirely a comedy, in fact it brought out a lot of serious problems modern couples deal with like exes.

Will Greenfield drove Annie Ainsley crazy at work, in fact it was mostly mutual as far as their anti relationship went. They were both good at their jobs, they just did them in completely different ways, and they ended up, both intentionally and unintentionally driving each other to distraction. That was until Christmas came around and Annie discovered her boyfriend cheating on her and her family expected her to bring someone home with her. Will didn’t really want to go to his family’s alone either, so they made a pact to share the holiday and go with each other to their families Christmas gathering.

Funny things happen when you pretend to like each other, you discover things about the other person that you would never have guessed, like that Will had an ex-wife jerking him around over his daughters.

This was a good story that was about real life, and I thought the people were very real. I even thought the ex wife was playing a very real kind of game that I have seen in real life. This was sad in places, but it showed that you can pick yourself up and make life what you want it to be. Very well done Allie Marie.

Annie & Will
*
Gentle giant & tiny powerhouse
*
Annie is a short boss woman. Always wearing her signature red lipstick, nails and heels. She is a force to be reckoned with. Her plans for the future are big and she goes and gets them.
Will always messes with her and makes short jokes. They constantly bicker. After his character growth he stands up for himself and finally does not let his ex trample him. The thanks should go to Annie since she pushes him to see what is happening even if at first it seems like she’s attacking and judging him.
Both were cheated on in the past and need help from each other. Little do they know how one little fake relationship will change everything. She becomes his rock and source of calm. He becomes her family.
I loved the book from the first page to the end. A beautiful love story with so many realistic events that happen on a daily basis to every mortal out there. Having this big dude to be so gentle and loving towards everyone is so fulfilling. The fact that Annie is such a boss and strong is a great way to portray how strong and powerful women can be.
*I received an ARC of this book and gave my honest opinion.

This book is the perfect combination of comedy + Romance + spice. I won’t lie but it took me some time to actually grip into it. It’s a workplace romance, enemies to lovers, single dad, fake dating. Annie and Will, actually made for each other but too many issues does not let them stay in peace. I hate Jess from the core of my heart and I loved it so much when Will finally stood up for his and his kids 😭🫶🏻 I was internally screaming
The way Annie’s character was built, her career her field her talents, I love me a strong FMC, and she was definitely one.
The spice in this book was just 😮‍💨
I bookmarked so many pages!!
This was my first book with a single dad trope, and let me tell you it did not disappoint!! And the epilogue 🥺🥺🥺🤍🤍🤍🤍 it was so cuteee😭😭

A great story!!!

An office romance that was founded on hate and a favor. Fake date over Christmas.

“This sounds like a Hallmark movie. Do you live in an R-rated Hallmark movie? Although I’m starting to think it might be more of a Lifetime movie.”

Annie and Wills story is a whole lot of different emotions. Their relationship consists of short jokes and snarky remarks to each other.
When they go see eachothers families for the holidays they realize maybe the other person isn't so bad and not what they thought.
ANNIE😍 I love how she loves and cares for Will and his girls. So much passion and honest love.
WILL🥾.. Mr Dad, who just wants to do right.
The locket🥹....so sweet and sentimental.
He's an amazing father
A dirty talker
I'm here for it all!

@readingwith_kels on OG! I was so kindly gifted an ARC of this book! I’m giving this book a 3/5 stars because while I think the plot line is cute and definitely the type of book I gravitate toward, I felt like some parts needed more tweaking. I love enemies to lovers, workplace romance, and fake dating. I would’ve loved to see more depth to the two MC’s before they began their fake dating. In the beginning I felt like there was a little too much emphasis on the MC’s height difference and not enough about who they were as a person. I loved that while this comes across as a cutesy romance novel, there are some spicy scenes throughout! I do think this could’ve been closer to 300 pages.

I really disliked this book.. I felt half of the book was about the mmc's ex-wife and how much of a bitch she is. And talking about his ex-wife (who was a stay at home mom), this is what he said - "But she wanted more. She said she couldn't handle being 'cooped up' all day. I fucking resented that. But she needed her space, and we had the ability so I let her". He resented his ex-wife wanted to go out and work?? And he let her?? WTF? She is her own person. A woman shouldn't need permission from her husband to go out and work. I can not read this author again.

it wasnt like the hating game or spanish love deception so thats a plus. but his children and him with them was like a sticker to cover his shitty attitude and bullying.
also im assuming that they are working for a youtube channel to create content or something like that so why would they have different offices all across usa when all they do is publish someone else's funny moments? it didn't make sense. like buzzfeed chicago, buzzfeed nyc etc
also his employment was provided by his college friend lmao she threw that in his face and they didn't adress this ever again

is a captivating blend of mystery and historical fiction. Set in a small, quaint town, the story follows an amateur sleuth uncovering dark secrets hidden for decades. The characters are well-developed, making readers care deeply about their fates. Marie's writing style is engaging and descriptive, pulling you into the world she has created. The plot twists keep you guessing until the very end. It's a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat while also offering moments of heartfelt emotion. A great read for fans of mystery and history."

Isn't this cover adorable?? In the beginning of the book,
I thought the characters were acting a bit juvenile, but that changed quickly during their pretend relationship proving that there's a fine line between love and hate once again.
I wasn't expecting one of the more serious aspects of the plotline in this romance, but it added some needed depth to this steamy story. Love wins again!

Ok I really hate not having loved this because I love the author but I genuinely found some of Will’s behaviour to simply be stuff I wouldn’t come back from.

He was cruel unnecessarily and never really owned that. Jess was an absolutely terrible ex/mother but she had too much power. There wasn’t enough redemption to make me like Will though

I received this arc in exchange for an honest review:

genre: contemporary romance
trope: fake dating, enemies to lovers, workplace romance

💭: what i liked
- this book is narrated from a shift between Annie & Will’s life but in 3rd person. i love an enemy to lovers book and this is it, but as any romance book —it is pretty predictable
- i loved the FMC who can hold her own but can also melt for the right person however, my favorite characters in this book are Violet + Amelia, they are the cutest characters ever (i can’t tell you who they are without spoiling!)

💭: what i disliked
- some parts of this book was honestly very long and dragged out and the drama in the book was almost repetitive

💭:
- you would like this book if you like the unhoneymooners

✨overall rating: 3.5/5 ✍️
🌶 spicy rating: 5/5✨
