I thought my newfound freedom would allow me to shake off the stink of New York City and start a new life somewhere else, a place where nobody knows me as Death Bringer or Britt the Bloody. A place where I’m not associated with ridiculous prophecies.
Looks like fate has other plans.
When the city is attacked, I find myself on the wrong side of the border. The only option is to take up arms alongside my vampire overlords and fight my way out. It doesn’t help that Alaric is by my side, reminding me of exactly what I’d be leaving behind.
My instinct is to fight for myself—for survival—but at some point I realize I just might be fighting for a hell of a lot more.
Red Rook is the second book in the Midnight Empire: The Restoration trilogy. If you missed the initial series, be sure to start with Wild Knight, Midnight Empire: The Tower, book 1.
Annabel Chase is the author of urban fantasy and cozy mystery novels. She would love to live in a magical town where she can shop at Ready-to-Were for the the perfect outfit, flirt with hot angels and vampires, and cook gourmet meals without exerting any effort. Visit her on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Annabel-Chas... or on her website at www.annabelchase.com.
I am on the fence with this one. Britt is kick ass. She and the secondary characters are what saves the series for me. The storyline is good and has some little twists here and there. The issue for me is the supposed MC, Alaric. He is weak as hell. He does not fight by Britt's side. He stays safely tucked away. She is constantly saving the House of August while he just lays around and barks orders. Not a fan of this guy.
Red Rook is the second book in the Midnight Empire: The Restoration series. It is a post-apocalyptic urban fantasy world where vampires now rule the world. A place where everyone else is food unless you have magical powers.
This book is a continuation from the original series, and I think following the same timeline, but I am not sure. I find myself trying to settle into the story with new characters.
Our FMC is a kick ar$e character and is always the first into the action. She finds herself facing off against unusual paranormal creatures trying to stop her from finding the objects that could kill them all if they got into the wrong hands.
It is full of action and adventure where the Knights fight the monsters in the world, causing chaos. I love it when stories are told in dual POV.
Red Rook is the second book in the Midnight Empire: The Restoration trilogy.
I love this urban fantasy series so much. Britt is such a fierce protagonist. Her plans of starting over are sidelined when NYC is attacked, and she has to fight to get back to the right side of the border.
Britt is back fighting alongside the Vampires, and the battle is one of EPIC proportions.
The world building in this series is absolutely FANTASTIC.
Alaric is back whether Britt likes it or not. There are some surprise guests that I was SO happy to see again.
The action is so well written , I just love this series. The author does a phenomenal job.
If you missed the initial series, be sure to start with Wild Knight, Midnight Empire: The Tower, book 1.
This is the second book in an awesome urban fantasy trilogy. Great cast of characters and a unique storyline. This is the second book in this trilogy which happens to be the second trilogy in a series. Many years down the road when all the super volcanoes on earth irrupt interview so much ash and debris into the atmosphere that it blocks out the sun permanently. Vampires come out of the shadows and begin to rule the world. Not only that but out of the super volcanoes irruption‘s, many other mystical creatures from the past that were thought to only be myth and legend. This trilogy is based in the New York con clave of August House of empires. Where are main character fights to protect the people as well as the king but it’s always battling darkness and evil to save the day. There are fanatics out there that believe she is part of a prophecy and believe if she does not join them that she is an enemy to them. Read on and follow the adventure and see what happens and where the story goes.
WARNING! Cliffhanger! This one is a 4/5 on my trauma scale, but fortunately the next book in this series is already out- just line it up ready to read next!
Britt is all set to head out of New York, when several odd incidents cause her to rethink her plan. Now she and her friends are busy trying to figure out what caused the incidents, and why…
This book actually features London and some of her friends from the Tower series, which you should have already read before this book; if you haven’t done so you’ll want to do it before reading this book. There’s a lot of action in the book, as well as some adventures, and a hint of romance. It makes for an enjoyable read, with an interesting cast and an intriguing world in which it is set.
An engrossing read for the urban fantasy enthusiast.
Super clean as in no curse words sexy times are fade to black…nun approved….so lots of things made this a 2 star…first MMC Alaric the serial cheater…has a secret relationship with Britt, but still whores around with others….and they break up when Britt witnesses him in action working on his next piece of ass…now few years later he is trying to get back in her pants and she lets him…if it’s that vampires and other species don’t mix, pray tell how the Midwest king has so many bastards with the help and portal witch??? Hell if that was ok there why didn’t Landon’s mother take her to there obviously they have no problems with dhampirs, she would not have to live in fear. Britt as a character did not have any depth, nor did she have any self-respect..
I definitely liked this book better than the first one. Brit has decided that her and her Phoenix are going to leave town and that the relationship between her and the vampire king is not going to work out. Instead, she ends up getting pulled into fining the missing witches. The King‘s right hand man according to Britt is plotting against him to bring back the sun. She’s having a very hard time deciding whether she wants to trust him or not. They’re running up against some odd monsters when they found some strange armor. Now they have to figure out what the armor is and what to do with it. I’m excited to read the next book in the series.
Another great piece of fantasy fiction by this author the storyline is always fast moving and there is never a dull moment. Britt the main character always seems to be in the midst of trouble there are always monsters to fight and wrongs to right. Will she ever properly get together with Alaric who is really the love of her life and will the world ever regain its sunlight and will the Vampire masters once again be despatched to the darkness? We are left with a cliff hanger can't wait for the next book to continue the story.
What an epic adventure, the action, enemies, mystery and life threatening monsters made for an amazing read. Britt is such a kick butt witch, but in this book I’d have to say Liam shone bright - loved his little one liners. The writing is so detailed that you can easily picture the monsters during battle. Overall a fantastic book, can’t wait to see what happens next after that shocking cliffhanger ending
This author never disappoints me and always leaves me wanting more with her stories. This book was very exciting. Britt, despite insisting she wants to leave town, is still invested in her and Alaric's well being. This time she must figure out how to ward off a great evil lurking in the darkness, tearing apart the wards, only there is something else lurking behind that debacle. The ending has been heart-stopping and ready to go on and find out if Britt and Alaric have a future.
Britt is now free of indenture to House August and now wants to leave NYC to be on her own. But circumstances keep getting in the way. First, Alaric wants her stay ‘one’ more day, then strange monsters start showing up in the city.
Lots of great action. There’s a connection with the previous ‘The Tower’ series toward the end and a cliff hanger at the end.
Fave scenes: helping the homeless man, getting to the Archive Room, traveling the Holland Tunnel and the sunflower picture.
Oh the angst! I have thoroughly enjoyed the series so far, one of my favourites so far by Annabel Chase, I adore George, he's such a character, and I have to say, I think Liam is hilarious. I am enjoying this trilogy as much if not more, as I have enjoyed everything written by Annabel Chase and I recommend reading anything written by her.
This is certainly not Starry Hollow! Again, Ms Chase has given us a strong female character, this time in Britt Miller. Just when she's about to leave NYC, something happens that causes her to stay and see things through. The surprise a few chapters from the end is probably my favourite part. I can't wait for the next installment.
The pieces are coming together nicely with this book, London and Britt are brought together and you can get a glimpse of where New Dawn’s three book will commingle with The Tower’s and The Restoration’s before the prophecy comes to pass.
Amazing writing, very creative and with fantastic characters that stick with you. I can see this series as a TV series. Let’s Hope.
Wow! Didn’t see that coming! What a wild ride this is, with Alaric and Britt and with the adventures along the way! Good to read about the knights again and glad to see them able to help Britt. September seems like a long way off for the finale, hoping it’s early!
Yet again, Annabel brings us into a land badly damaged creating a seemingly eternal night where our heroine fights monsters that shouldn't exist, helped by characters from another series. Excellent as always.
Awesome read. Lots of action. Some mystery, magic, werewolves, vampires, monsters, mayhem and prophecies. And a love story that might or might not come to pass. Highly recommend reading this if you like this genre. A real gem.
The book was exciting and full of action. I love the characters. It was good to see characters from an another series in this story. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
I can’t wait for book three after reading this. We continue with the adventures of Britt but also get a quick reunion with London and her knights! Can’t wait to see where the cliffhanger goes.
This is a really good book by a very talented writer. The storyline kept me on my toes. I can't wait for the next book by this author. She is a very good and original storyteller! You won't be disappointed at all.
I'm so glad Britt decided to stay until this new crisis is over. I'm really routing for her and Alaric to stay together. Me be meeting London and the Knights will help her make the right decision
Really good story in the new series The author always delivers great characters and the storylines are always good I look forward to the next book in the series.
I liked how the book picked up where the fist left off. So many others have a gap leaving you thinking about what happened. Kept me interested the entire time.
I enjoyed the characters more this time around. The story was interesting, though it seems to meander around the overall plot instead of fleshing it out. It mostly seems pointless so it will be interesting to see if the third book provides connections.
OHMYGOSH!! It was even better than the first one!!! Lots more action, there's a bit of mythology!! LOVED it!! Dragons, OH AND the hilarious digs she and her werewolf bff throw at each other!!! HILARIOUS
