Have you ever had a truth bomb dropped on you—one so big, it blew up your life…in the best possible way? Yeah. Me, too.
Everything in my life has gone exactly as I’d planned it. I graduated college, moved back to my hometown, and opened my own business. The Sly Fox is a thriving hotspot in the small town of Rebel, Idaho. I’m close to my family, my best friend just moved back to town, and I’ve never been happier.
I am literally living the dream. It can’t possibly get any better than this.
At least, that’s what I thought until a certain midnight-haired beauty walked into my bar and asked for a job.
Mila Cabrera is even more gorgeous now than she was in high school, where I’d spent all four years secretly crushing on her. Now, she’s back in my life, and I’m having a hard time keeping things strictly professional.
I want her, but she gets strangely nervous around me. Quiet. Guarded. And the more I break through her tough outer shell to get to know her, the more I want to know. I like her. A lot.
But turns out, she has a secret. And when the truth is revealed, nothing will ever be the same.
Piper James lives in Idaho with her husband, two teenage sons, two cats, and a dog.
Her favorite things are romance novels, coffee, potato chips, and her Jeep Wrangler…and her family, of course. Seriously. She loves her family more than coffee and her jeep. *exaggerated wink*
When she’s not writing, she watches ghost shows and spends most of her time trying to convince her family their house is haunted. Because it is.
She wrote YA paranormal romance for 6 years under the name Wendi Wilson before giving into her desire to write spicy romcoms, and it was the best career decision she’s ever made…until she decides to write a book about the ghosts. Because they are definitely real.
DNF’d at 36%. I just couldn’t get around the fact that she knew he wasn’t sober and she still had sex with him. Consent while under the influence is NOT consent. And then she finds out she’s pregnant and she’s told he’s already in a relationship with someone else… even if he’s not, homegirl thinks that, so in this scenario, he’s a cheater. Still should have confronted him, at least for the supposed girlfriend in this scenario so she’d realize she’d been cheated on.
What got me to drop the book was when she basically said, quote and unquote, “Yes, he slept with me and got me pregnant while he was in a relationship with someone else, though he didn’t know about the pregnancy part. But we were both younger and dumber back then. We both made mistakes, as twenty-one year old college kids tend to do.” He “cheated”, regardless of whether he was drunk or not. He. “Cheated.” That is it. That wasn’t a mistake. That isn’t the same thing. Yeah, not my cup of tea.
(I put cheated in quotation marks because I know he wasn’t in a relationship, but the girl thinks he was)
As far as secret baby romance books go this is probably one of the shittiest I've read. Mind you the only reason i read this was bc it was a booktok rec. The only reason I didn't completely DNF it was bc I'm not a quitter lol
Ok that being said, so we know Fox the male lead was drugged the night he slept and impregnated the female lead Mila. If that wasn't problematic within itself the author makes it known that Mila knew he wasn't sober and yet she still slept with him. Like??? GIRL WHY??? At this point i would have preferred if they were both blacked out drunk, without neither of them having been drugged.
Another thing, Mila was so annoying. She was incredibly selfish. Like yeah I get it her parents we're the fucking worst and did a number on her but that doesn't excuse the fact she kept this man from his child and this sweet baby from her dad, grandparents, aunt etc. Like her excuse is that she went looking for him and was told he was out with his gf so she'd rather raise this baby on her own than confront this man bc how was she gonna ruin his life?? No, absolutely not. She claimed she was looking out for the supposed girlfriend and she didn't want to hurt her feelings by telling her her bf cheated. Ma'am that's not how girl code works. (there was no cheating, he was single) And after when she was hooking up with him she didn't tell him bc she was scared he was gonna leave her for lying so she was just gonna enjoy the time they had. Like i said only looking after her needs and wants.
I didn't mind Fox. He wasn't swoon worthy or you know very exciting. He was sorta bland if I'm honest. Both of them really. I didn't feel sparks. Their relationship was really more sexual than anything. There wasn't no wooing/courting. Heck there wasn't even a huge declaration of love, like a swoon worthy one (think Anthony Bridgetron)

I would not say this was a bad book, rather the book was not intended for someone like me, for many reasons. Firstly, in secret baby romance books i prefer when the father finds out in the first 20% of the book, not at 80% of the book, which was the case with this book. Secondly, I didn't relate to, or understand or even like the main characters. Thirdly, the romance between the leads felt less like "I'm falling in love with you" and more like " we have great sexual tension so let's hook-up" And finally the flashbacks in the first half of the book which were in the middle of the chapters, annoyed me, which ruined my experience with the book.
This is book 2 in the Rebel Rendezvous series and it follows Fox and Mila! Make sure you read the trigger warnings before reading! I really enjoyed reading Fox’s character in book 1 and I’m so happy he got his own book!
Fox crushed on Mila. Mila crushed on Fox. Unfortunately neither of them knew how the other felt in high school. After their paths crossed at a college party, one thing led to another and they both *danced* together that night.
Fast forward to 3 years later, Mila now works for Fox at his bar. He’s working up the courage to ask her out while she’s determined to keep him at arm’s length! When Fox finally wears her down and she stops fighting her growing attraction, things get really steamy!!
I loved the storyline of this book, it moved at a really nice fast pace without feeling rushed! Both of these characters are so considerate of each other’s feelings and expectations. I also enjoyed how they were comfortable voicing their desires without turning it into a mind-numbing “will they won’t they” situation!
If you enjoy a sweet romance that packs some heat, definitely grab this book!
This is the second book in the Rebel Rendezvous series. And I loved it. And i was hooked from the beginning. I just love all the characters that this author creates. They are all so likable, and real. Mila and Fox both are attracted to each other, but afraid to tell the other person. When she comes into his bar for a job, sparks fly, and you are left wondering how long they will be able to keep their hands to them selves. This book was funny, and heartwarming, and had all the spice. Definitely recommend it, and any book by this author.
Other amazing stories with romance and heart. Piper James each time I read your books you really blow me away. Their no words. The charters were amazing. Everything was written what happen in the pass to explain we’re the charted are now. Boy he had to work a little be back to her heart. I recommend this book and give a 5/5
This book actually gave me anxiety. The fact that as the reader, you know the secret the entire time and you're just waiting for it to come out, had my heart racing the entire time.
Other than that, I enjoyed this story. It was a very sweet small town fast paced romance with some spiciness.
Piper James has done it again! Another wonderful book added to the list! I cannot believe how great these books are with how fast she writes them ♡♡
Fox and Mila were absolutely adorable! As was Poppy (my screen namesake!) After all of their trials and hardships, they still managed to work everything out and find love in one another. And let's not forget how hot the spicy scenes are! Piper James has some mad skills!!
As always, I cannot wait for the next story because I know I will get lost in it as well. They are my comfort reads ♡♡
Another quick, sweet read dealing with a one night stand turned surprise pregnancy turned secret child in this series of standalones. This book does deal with more intense subjects than the previous, but the author included a warning for readers in the book blurb on Amazon, making the choice to read the book 100% up to readers’ discretion. Having said that, I understand the concerns other readers had with the moment of dubious consent in this book. After reading the book and getting the context of the moment, I understand why the author chose to include it and how it was used in the story, and appreciated the warning the author provided to give readers the ultimate decision to read or not.
While greater context is important, a spoiled summary of the entire moment from both perspectives is included at the end of this review for those curious. The beginning of the spoilers is marked as **SPOILERS**
Even if twenty four year old Mila’s life didn’t turn out how she thought it would, she wouldn’t change a thing. Her two year old daughter Poppy is her greatest joy, and wanting to give her the best life possible, Mila puts aside her pride and applies for a job at the place she’s avoided for the last three years—the bar owned and operated by none other than her longtime crush and the father of her child, Fox. Though twenty four year old Fox either can’t or won’t remember their night together, Mila can’t ignore the sparks that still fly between them, and when Fox attempts to get closer to not only Mila but her sweet daughter too, Mila is powerless to resist. As they get closer and Fox continues to show Mila how good they could be together, she knows she needs to tell him the truth about Poppy, but with their new relationship and the happiness of all three of them at risk, Mila isn’t sure if she’s brave enough to do it.
This book, as all by this author are, was well written and the pacing flowed nicely. The plot was full of tension, angst, and spice, and had me reading as fast as possible to get to the moment where everything would be revealed. The misconceptions and longing between the characters added even more angst to the plot, and made the happy ending even sweeter.
The MCs truly cared for the other and wanted to be together, but the secret between them held them back. Waiting for the moment all would be revealed and they could finally accept all the pieces of the other was nerve wracking, but the love between the characters made for a great distraction while waiting.
Though this book is a standalone, I loved getting a glimpse of familiar faces from the previous in the series and loved seeing the group all together and teasing each other again. If you’re wanting to read the whole standalone series, this book does spoil quite a lot of the previous couple’s story, so I would recommend reading them in order to avoid those.
Overall, this was a good, well written book. Not as lighthearted as the first in the series due to its content, but still a sweet story.
**SPOILERS** from this moment on!
I’m keeping this as neutral as possible to give all the facts to readers looking for a summarized version of the dubious consent in the story.
For context, keep in mind that during this moment together, Mila thinks Fox got drunk at the party they were at and consented to sleeping with him regardless. In Fox’s POV, we learn that while he was drunk, he also was slipped a drug without his knowledge, affecting his memory of the party and making him forget the time spent with Mila, even though in the moment he was fully conscious and consenting. Fox doesn’t remember sleeping with Mila due to the drug, so as far as he knows, they never could’ve had a child together, creating the main conflict in the book.
(Spoiler: Mila and Fox went to the same high school and while they didn’t talk, they knew of each other and both had a crush on the other. Now at the same college and at a frat party in their senior year, Mila spots Fox just as she’s getting her first drink, and when he sees her, he immediately goes to have a chat. As they talk more, she notices his eyes are glazed and he’s intoxicated but mentions the fact that it’s a college party where she, along with everyone else, is there to get drunk and let loose like Fox currently is. While they talk, it’s mentioned he doesn’t stumble or slur his words, and that while tipsy, he’s very much aware and in control of his actions. They move outside, where he eventually tells her he wants to kiss her and makes sure to ask her consent and wait for her to initiate it before they kiss. They agree to move to a more private space in a barn, and once they climb a ladder to the barn’s hayloft, they sleep together. As the moment comes to a close, Fox says something to Mila and the direct quote says, “His words were slurring, but in that moment, I didn’t give a shit how drunk he was.” The moment ends shortly after that, with Fox falling asleep in the hayloft. Mila tries to wake him up, but when he doesn’t stir, she leaves.
After she finds out she’s pregnant, she finds Fox’s frat house so she can tell him, but his old roommate answers the door and lies to her about Fox, causing her to keep the news to herself. She drops out of school shortly after that, never having told him or finding out the truth of that night. She works for Fox years later, thinking he’s either acting ignorant on purpose to remain professional, or that he truly forgot he ever slept with her since it was during the time when he was known as a player.
In Fox’s POV, after the party he finds out he was drugged by his roommate as a prank, and was told he slept with someone that night though he doesn’t remember it happening. Not knowing who she was and wanting to explain himself to her in case he did something he regrets, he asks his roommate who she was, but unknown to him, his roommate lies. Fox leaves the frat for good, and searches for the woman he was with, but with a false description from his old roommate, he fails. When no one comes forward to confirm being with him at the party, he mentions he isn’t sure if it actually happened or if his old roommate lied to him about that too. Eventually, he moves on without answers until Mila mentions the hayloft during the climax of the book, which is about 80% into the book.)
Book two of the Rebel Rendezvous series, brings us Fox and Mila’s story. Fox has been crushing on Mila since high school. When Mila comes into his bar looking for a job, Fox sees it as a great opportunity to get to know her. Mila, however, does not make this easy. She has a secret.. *** I LOVED Fox in book one of this series and was so excited to get my hands on this one. While my love of Fox only grew, Mila took a minute to grow on me. I liked her enough but needed time to understand why she was so skittish. She seemed traumatized. The author did well helping the reader understand the trauma she endured at the hand of people who should have given her nothing but love. As her relationship with Fox (and his family) progresses, she becomes the woman she was meant to be.
The author is also a master at creating community within her books. Fox and Mila are surrounded by people who will love and support them no matter the issues. Fox’s parents are definitely examples of this and the way they embrace Mila and Poppy is beautiful!
We also get to see what Winnie and Brooks are up to!
TW: H was drugged by a frat brother. h was emotionally and financially abused by her parents. HEA 🌶🌶
I loved this whole series from Piper James. This book follows Fox (brother of Winnie from book 1) and Mila. They had a crush on eachother in highschool but never acted on it until they meet again in college where they sleep together. When Mila falls pregnant and goes to tell Fox because of a misunderstanding she ends up not talking to him and leaving college. 3 years later with a daughter on toe and looking for a job she goes to work at Fox's bar trying not to fall more for him and wanting to keep her daughter out of this. Fox on the other hand has no idea he sleept with Mila all those years ago because he was druged by an asshole ''friend'' in the party. He doesn't know Mila was pregnant from him but when he meets Poppy (his daughter) he is sooo sweet and loving and caring and wishes he was her father. We see their relationship grow and how Fox reacts when his parents of all peaple point out that Poppy is his spiting image as a baby. Overall good read, fast paced and if you love secret baby for sure give it a try.
It was a night Fox will never remember, it was a night Mila will never forget! Fox Myers has been crushing on Mila Cabrera for forever, well...since the ninth grade. Perfect, intelligent Mila was always out of his league or so he thought. Now working for him at his bar, he finds the urge to get to know her, to want more from her nearly impossible to resist. Too bad Mila knows something that will change the course of their lives forever. Mila thought the night spent with Fox was a dream come true. Then consequences from that night arrived and she was alone. She made a choice and now she has to live with it as she fights the urge to let him back inside. He can't remember their night together and she will never forget it, how can these two work it out? Beautifully, of course. This is one of my favorites. Mila is a sassy single mother, Fox is endearingly clueless, Poppy is freaking adorable. Pick up your dose of Seratonin today!
Piper James does it again. I find it so comforting reading her books! I love the characters, so much so that even when I hate them or am frustrated by their asinine behavior, I still love them! Mila is such an interesting character. Flawed and vulnerable in so many ways but also immensely strong in others. She's single mom-ing it up all while holding down a full-time job, working for the guy who got her pregnant in college, but the doesn't know it. Fox is your typical guy. A good guy, but his heart was broken, and he's just trying to move on. And then comes Mila, the girl he's had a crush on since high school, but she won't give him the time of day. And he can't figure out why. If I say too much, it'll spoil the whole book. Suffice to say that you love everyone and you hate them all at the same time. And the SPICE... it's written perfectly.
Oh, I really like this latest book in Piper James’ Rebel Rendezvous series, which really isn’t a surprise since I tend to love everything she writes. But this one…it really pulls at the heartstrings.
I Wanted It to Be Me revolves around Mila and Fox and tells a story of how sometimes fate takes a winding path full of unexpected life-altering obstacles when bringing two people together—and that they don’t necessarily have to be bad. Sometimes those missed opportunities are what’s needed for people to grow and change into who they’re meant to become so when fate winds around again and brings them back together, it’s the right time. It becomes a story of hope instead of tragedy.
The beginning progressed very nicely, the introduction of Mila's daughter was very organic, not force fed to the reader. I really enjoyed the flashbacks in the beginning of the story. But after the scene at the river, it felt like the relationship went from 0 to 1000 way too quickly. They are adults, and technically had slept together before so I can see the quick decision to bang making sense, but then that was all the relationship felt like (at least to the reader). The smut was definitely good, a little repetitive but it can be in real life! The epilogue was predictable, but as always in HEA; marriage, another baby, forgiveness. I liked the first half of the book, the anxiety and turmoil Mila was feeling and how wonderfully Fox was in responding and his patience was a great read.

Piper James delivers another story with heart and tons of heat! Book 2 in the Rebel Rendezvous series can be read as a stand alone, but you get to meet Fox in the first book, and he’s just adorable.
Fox has known Mila since high school when he didn’t think he had a chance. He runs into her at a college party and again when she applies to work at his bar a couple of years later. It’s what happened between the party and now that can make or break this duo. Can they overcome the obstacles?
Piper James continuously gives us great characters, stories and steam. This is another home run!
This is Mila and Fox’s story, the 2nd book in the Rebel Rendezvous series. I loved the emotion in the book; from the untold childhood crushes, to the raw love and pain these two experience together from college through adulthood. The frustration I felt reading and yelling at the pages while trying to manipulate the characters into doing what I wanted was real 😅 It was a page turner, for sure. As always this ended with a really really REALLY good HEA. Highly recommend everything by Piper James!
This isbook 2 in the series. Fox and mila both have feeling for eachother since college. Now mila is working at Fox's Bar and is hiding a secrect that can change how Fox feels about her. I felt like i was there feeling everything Mila and Fox were feeling and i just wanted to hug them when they needed it. I love piper and her books one way or another i feel connected to the characters and i cant wait to see what she has instore for the next one. This book is 18+ please read full description for possible t ws.
Fox is swoon worthy. This man has been crushing on Mila for years and she has no idea. Then we see that she has been doing the same with him. Go forward to college and she finally talks to him but there are issues with that. Things happen between them and he doesn't remember talking to her or seeing here or anything else. But he does know something happened and it wasn't what he planned on. There was someone who set him up out of jealousy. There are also things that happen on Mila's side that have her family other than her sister showing their true colors. And it is not appealing.
Fox and Mila are adorable together! I really enjoyed this story, and do like how Piper put in the additional scenes of what happened between them in the past, to give some context to the story and why things are the way that they are now. There's a little bit of miscommunication between the pair at first, but once she starts to open up to him, to allow him to get back into her heart, things really start to heat up. This book was a good read for me and I can't wait to see what happens next in the series!!
I know this is a silly thing, but I love Fox as a character name. LOL Anyway, this is my favorite in this series so far. Fox and Mila have crushed on each other forever, but neither could tell the other one.
Then guess who ends up working at the “Sly Fox” (the bar that Fox owns)? Mila does! See why I love that name?Needless to say, their attraction to each never diminished so they have to navigate being so near each other while staying apart.
This is funny and steamy like other other book in the series, so it’s a fun read. Be sure to check the content warnings.
This was ish cute. I didn't like that she basically took advantage of him. I get that she wasn't aware that he was completely gone, but it doesn't excuse her. She thought he was only tipsy but mans was gone gone. The book was also really short, so there wasn't much development anywhere. Poppy was the light of the story lol. I mean I'm glad that Mila and Fox got their shit together and ended up together. I normally like the secret baby trope, but something about this didn't sit right with me. I just wasn't vibing as much.

I don’t usually like the pregnancy trope but this book made it work. I loved the chemistry between Meila and Fox. Fox is such a good character, definitely one of my new favorite boy boyfriends. Also Meila was amazing. I loved her attitude. Just the whole plot was spectacular, especially how it all came together at the end. All the flashbacks really added that little push the book needed. I definitely recommend. Also the spicy parts were short but you could just feel love they had for each other from the beginning.
1. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I wish there weren't that many sex scenes, but only because it kept the reveal from happening. like the author kept building up to "Oh, meeting the parents, they're gonna figure out what he hasn't bla bla bla" but just postponed it so much. 2. it should've been longer. or shorter. I think the author should've added either a different conflict for that breakup before the end, and made Fox aware of who Poppy was to him waaay earlier into the book since it was so dragged out, or just made this 50 pages shorter.
