It's 1986 in Sabula, Iowa, the "Island City," and it's senior year for JoAnn Sullivan and her best friend Shena. Comfortable with their place in the middle of the social hierarchy, below the likes of Garrett Malone and his Barbie doll girlfriend Andraya, they plan to be themselves and have the best year ever partying with their friends, cruising Dump Road, and working at their jobs at the Lakeside cafe and the Hop N' Shop. But a back to school party at the Y, and a run-in with Garrett Malone changes everything for Jo. Garrett has it all and seems to be untouchable until he crosses the line and makes one too many enemies.
This was a nice short read. I am local to the area and have been to Sabula many times and I thought the author did a great job describing the town and it’s geography. I did enjoy the twist at the end and I kept changing my mind on who I thought was the culprit throughout the story. I wish that the book would’ve been longer and maybe would’ve even gone more into an investigation before wrapping up.
It's interesting to read about a town I've driven through multiple times as well as my city being mentioned multiple times. The story was good and now I'm curious to drive up to Sabula and find all the landmarks mentioned here.
It’s the year 1980 something and all the seniors are gearing up for the ultimate year of partying, dances, and few bad choices. Especially best friends for life JoAnne and Shena! They are happy living the life of girls who are not too popular but not over looked either, and they are set on having the perfect last year of high school. Until a party goes awfully wrong and leaves the popular Garret Malone dead on Dump Road.
This was a super interesting read right from the start! It gives you total nostalgia of a time when technology was practically non existent and times were simple! I loved hearing what the girls were wearing with their stirrup leggings, rock band mini skirts, big hoop earrings and even bigger hair 👏 also this book takes place in the authors small town of Sabula, Iowa not too far from myself! That made me want to pick it up immediately!
Besides the 1980 something nostalgia I also really enjoyed the twists this mystery had! The writing really pulled out the thoughts of how small towns can hold big secrets! Usually I can figure where things are going but this one kept me guessing until the end!
Overall I gave this book 4.5 stars!
I suggest that anyone looking for a quick read, filled with thrilling secrets, and a mystery that will keep you guessing until the end definitely grab this book!! You can find it on Amazon or Kindle Unlimited!! 😍
Every high school class has a bell curve of students. The slow, the geeks and nerds on one end. The wealthy, the good looking, the athletic stars at the other end. And the biggest group is the average students. This is the story of a particularly mean bully from the wealthy group and the effect he has on the rest of the students. I am very familiar with the location of this story, so it was fun to visualize where everything was taking place. This is a good read for anyone who attended high school.
I enjoyed this local read. Excellent writing, good intriguing story. I thought I knew who did it several times only to be quite shocked in the end how the little island town kept some secrets.
The book is excellent. The book can be uncomfortable to read at certain points. The writer did any excellent job creating the characters. The reader will feel like they are real people. Plot is a little cliche; but the storyline made the book hard to out down. Rachel Carlson is an author to look for.
