Light Unto Another World, Volume 1

Rate this book
As a soldier, Uriel Makkis was prepared for many things. Being pulled through a portal into another world was not one of them.

He soon learns that he was brought to this world for a reason, as the heralded Sword of Light. However, something is amiss, as he first appeared in the middle of nowhere, rather than the capital as intended.

While he is meant to travel there straightaway to learn more, Uriel has no intention of doing as he’s told, not when there are people he can help right where he is.

Back home, he was just an average soldier; here, he can truly make a difference, and Uriel will not let the opportunity pass by.

But it won’t be easy. Uriel will have to rely on his faith, his newfound friends, and the skills and knowledge he brings from back home, as he throws himself headlong into a new conflict, becoming a beacon of light on this new world!

In this new isekai adventure, you can’t just leave the old world behind.

This isekai has some interesting elements. Uriel is a soldier in the Israeli army and is pulled into a fantasy world. He is an orthodox Jew and that's going to present some difficulties in a world where he's likely the only one of his faith. I very much enjoyed his engagement with the world, leveraging his knowledge of popular culture to roll with the changes and yet still holding onto his faith at the same time was an interesting conflict.

Unfortunately, the pace of the story is otherwise very plodding. Uriel's faith makes for a bit of a disconnect from the world he finds himself in. And his training makes him a bit over-competent for the challenges he faces. So the wonder and mystery of a new world are sucked into competence and a need to fit specific patterns informed by his heritage.

I dunno, I don't want to over-emphasize the faith thing because I feel like the plodding would have happened anyway. By the time he started making a plan to deal with the goblin problem with local officials I was all "I wonder if all military briefings are this boring". And frankly, I suspect that they are. Which is why military briefings don't happen a lot in our fiction, even when military dudes are the protagonists. Hang on, that's not true. Top Gun: Maverick managed some very interesting briefings. Which only serves to contrast poorly here, I suppose. Maybe that's the exception that proves the rule? Hmmm.

Okay, fine. All I have to go on is that I got bored. And I'm not even sure why. All of this should have been extremely engaging. I'm a fan of religious faith and applying those precepts to new and unexpected happenings. I like martial competence and the fight for order and community over the chaos and brutality represented by the goblin bad-guys in this story. And the undercurrent of prejudice and overcoming racism should have pulled me in as well. But it totally didn't. So I'm going to give this a second star for feeling like this should have worked and that it didn't for reasons local/personal to me...

Unbalanced story vs religion

Although the story itself is good and has a lot of potential it is simply way too heavy on the religious side for my liking as to me as religion is like an image refracted off the multiple facets of a diamond meaning there is no one right faith only people who push their views of it on to others when ever they talk about it and those who do not sadly the MC is of the former a lot of the time

I don't think it was the story..

It was just a little odd with all the Jewish religious adds for me. I didn't like it... I was constantly broke from the immersion of the story.. that said going any lower or higher than 3 stars would be wrong. It wasn't bad just odd ..

A mixed start in what I think could evolve into a good series. Overall I liked the premise, soldier thrown into a fantasy world, it’s a pretty basic start to your typical isekai. What sets it apart is that it’s not just an average Mary Sue protagonist that expects the world to change around him.
