Adventures of a Country Vet #4

Never Say Die : New Adventures from the Country Vet

Rate this book
As he and his father wrangle over construction methods and almost everything else, Dave puts in overtime to deal with the medical concerns of his endearing patients. He meets some of the most improbable clients and frustrating cases of his career. His small animal practice thrives as snakes with indigestion, traumatized rabbits, and alcoholic dogs are deposited on his exam table. His large animal patients include horses with mysterious ailments, hogs that beep, heifers from hell, and goats that definitely have his number. They all provide the good doctor with challenge and excitement—enough to keep him from being bored in the backwoods of the Kootenays. His friend and assistant, Doris, figures prominently in keeping the anxious vet on the straight and narrow. As usual, his loving German shepherd, Lug, makes himself useful in desperate times. As reviewers say, "Dr. Perrin tells a good story." His first two books, Don't Turn Your Back in the Barn and Dr. Dave's Stallside Manner, have been international bestsellers. And here in Never Say Die he presents all-new adventures to tickle the reader's funnybone and leave us asking for more.

In some respects this book is very much like the first 'Adventures' I read so my remarks are still consistent with what I said about it, which was that it really is a great read. Author Dave Perrin has that rare facility to be able to write naturally and easily about himself and what goes on in his life with honesty and without ego getting in the way. At times the blood and guts descriptions of the procedures could induce fainting in the ultra-sensitive, but frankly I found it very interesting particularly when Dave hit a dead-end in the diagnosis and had to go back to his lecture notes, fellow vets and other sources.

Five stars because I'll read all of his books

I love Dr perrins writing, loving attitude toward people, pets, and farm animals. I read a lot of vet books and he's a favorite because I love that his animal stories are amazing and he equally describes the hearts of the owners. Excellent character development

I read Dr Perrin's first 2 book shortly after they were published and had forgotten how much I enjoyed them. This one too was highly entertaining, emotionally rich and at the same time, educational. The anecdotes about his interactions with his clients and their animals were so well written I could see them happen. It was easy to to understand and feel his mixed emotions when it came discussing his relationship with his father. I really enjoyed this book a lot.
