This was an engaging read and a fun take on the LitRPG genre. While there is a lot of focus on the game strategy and the minutia of menus and tech trees, there is a strong focus on character growth, interpersonal friendship and morality, and the meta morality of a game system. This is a long book and it could have been broken up into a few volumes; it can be a bit of a slog in the mid-game narrative. But the story was fun and engaging enough to keep my interest and I liked the twists on the genre norms and the presence of a sympathetic, moral necromancer.

**Thanks to the author and NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Amazing book! I love the characters, action and thrilling battle scenes, the weak to strong plot for Sean/King Carlos. Overall, a satisfying read. I like how Sean's knowledge doesn't come from nowhere. Aside from being the strongest warrior in an mmorpg, he's also played other games like Civilization, which explains how he builds up his kingdom.

A beautiful book

I was surprised by this story and found it to be very compelling to read.I enjoyed the charters and the system. I found the culture to be very entertaining, I am sorry that the story did not go over some of the kingdom's. But i will be rereading this book because it is fun and exciting. I highly recommend this book to read.thank you for your great work.

excellent Litrpg

I’ve read a lot of litrpg books, and this is one of the best I have read. Cheers to Oisin for crafting a fully satisfying single volume novel. So many others stretch the story out, but this was well crafted storytelling from beginning to end.

Absolutely amazing

This is one of the best books I have read in some time. The pacing is great, world building fantastic, character development done right, and time skips that make sense.

Everything is developed at a great pace with no real slow down. The story doesn’t hang up on any particular point and the character is just the right touch of OP. Read this story you should enjoy it.

enjoyed it immensely

Loved the story. It is a great read and worth the time. Characters were great and their continued growth throughout the book was perfect.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though it was a monster of a read. It was very diverse in range of characters and the main character was likeable. I also enjoyed his interactions with his ally, who I will not mention to avoid spoilers, but all in all, a well plotted book with a satisfying ending. Nice moments of humour throughout also. Some typos, but it is to be expected as it is 330,000 words at least. I would recommend this book to all isekai readers and LitRPG fans.

Firstly, this was LONG. Having said that, despite the time it cost me to read it, read it I did, as I found it moved pretty well. A lot of menu stuff, but it's easy to skim if you're not into that. It is a key element of the story though, so no avoiding all of it.

I was, however, confused when I started reading it, as I was certain I'd read it before, but couldn't remember what happened. Evidently I read a bit of it on RR earlier, explaining why I had no recollection of the end nor a record in my goodreads.

This would have been at least three, possibly 5 or more books in the hands of some other authors, so one big volume suits me fine. The character development was very good, and the MC refreshingly sensible overall. I don't recall if there will be a sequel, but if so I'll read it.

A good read

An all in one book complete story from beginning to end. Character has ups and downs fights back and always pushes forward. Plenty of characters who are well thought out. Story rolls along well and keeps you looking forward to the next page. Highly recommend this book!!!!!!!!

Great story

This story was a very enjoyable read. I loved the tenacity of the protagonist, and the convoluted plot. The action scenes had the right amount of detail, without being overwhelming. A great example of the LitRPG genre.

Completed Awesome Story

This story of a guy summoned to a gods game world was absolutely fantastic. He is now in a body of a super obese king, and is a year behind the other champions. Great Reading

Surprisingly really good.

I started reading this book expecting a typical RPG style story, yet the interesting world and character development kept me turning the digital pages as much as I could. Overall worth the read, thanks to the author.

awesome

This is a great adventure. It is full of fresh ideas that completely surprise given that the setup (hero wakes up in fantasy game world) is so standard.

Summoned to another world

Oisin Muldowney has good writing skills to transfer a difficult concept, as most isekai or another world books go. He has taken the concept of games like Age of empires style games and made this awesome read with engaging character and the challenges of Sean who summoned most definitely in to a body not his. With some of the characters who have summoned driven by hidden agenda, although summoned in to a kings body. Sean has to wonder if he is a king or a puppet. I find these kind of games like age of empires to okay at first but tiresome but the quality and conjuring of this author conjures another world where the end must be seen. Where the author has taken this project and other that I would like to read. Like Sean I would like to see a change from the gaming gods in their style of creation where another world anime or literature offer another option instead of being reduced to a fashion of something less enjoyable and more like work. Ty Oisin for a marvellous read.

DNF.
I just couldn't stomach the fact that despite being kidnapped and force to shoulder the heavy responsibility of leading a weak and troubled nation without any concent and being imprisoned in a very fat body whose previous occupant was a disgusting person and being subjugated to be regarded as such, he's still not only trying his best to rectify the current situation of these people and even endangering his own life, but still endure the rude and disrespectful behaviours of others especially that wizard without any objection at all!
They regard him as their tool and he just rolls with it!
Except this issue the story itself is extemly boring and everything is too simplified.

Overall this is a fun idea with good characters.

The only issue is in the execution. It is very dry in its descriptions, and leans heavily on its stats. So for as interesting as it is, it gets a bit boring in several places.

All and all a pretty good story. I think it might have actually benefitted from being broken into 2 or 3 books given how long it is.

This start of book is suprisingly good but the story becomes more and more flawed.

The protagonist is supposed to be just an outstanding MMORPG tank but acts more like a "hearts of iron" player fumbling with min/max. Despite claiming to be a great strategist he acts rather impulsive, outstangly naive whenever it matters which made me face palm several times.

The fighting is mostly a "how not to do it" a la Hollywood. The protagonist loves his lance, permanently using it at close quarters, indoors and killing people by swinging it. He even takes it with him inside a coach. The author clearly seems not to know exactly what a lance is and how it is supposed to be used as it used like a sword. Same goes with the realism about the use of short bows as they are rather useless against foes with some protection. There is a reason why the Greeks and Romans hardly used them.. The scenes where the protagonist uses his heavily armored horse to ride
somehow inside a castle and even up stairwells is just hillarious.

The protagonist´s personality is rather bizarre. He takes a city just to not occupy it (even if that would have ended a war) but then only some DAYS later attacks it again to occupy it. He never acts decisively against single threats out of misunderstood "goodness" but has no moral dilemma when he burns down an entire city and its inhabitants...

Building: despite the protagonist claims about his own brilliance his building, employment and research priorities are rather BIZARRE
Ressources: it seems that the author sometimes forgets that the ressources have to be sent home before they can be used.
Worldbuilding: according to the plot the world is flat and seemingly looks like a chessboard but it is supposed to have magnetism and a MOON? The maps are a nice touch but sadly even lacking one of the earliest enemies. Furthermore, the author seems to get the directions and neighbours wrong several times.
Story development: i liked an early unexpected twist but found it sad that apart from the early story discovery and adventure was sorely lacking. The protagonist´s great strategy of "let´s see if i will turn out the world´s biggest moron later" was - mildly put - not to my liking.

In the end i just did not care enough to read the last pages and decided to change to a more rewarding book.

I'm really thrilled to have something that dates to the COVID pandemic, frankly addresses some of its consequences, and immortalizes some of the restrictions that society suffered under. That's the reason this book is going to stay on my shelves. I haven't read another book that so clearly dates to this present period.

As for the rest of the book, it's massively long and my copy has no page numbers. There are some really good descriptions at points, but they're buried in a vast mire. Without page numbers, I can't possibly hope to return to them. As I write this, I realize I could have marked my favorite moments by sticking a flag in the book at each one, but I didn't think of doing so at the time. I'm not sure I'm ever likely to go back to it.

Well, I am a sucker for base-building.

The Good

I loved the story. The stakes were really interesting, especially in the beginning and the end. The main intrigue of the story was well distilled. Characterisation was mostly very well done. Satisfying depth in most protagonists.

The Less Good

As is often the case, antagonists were not that well realised. Many of them just fell back to "evil" for its sake. I wanted more complexity there. It was most problematic at the denouement. The resolution of the final conflict was really underwhelming in its expedience, considering the lengthy buildup to a really thorny situation. But then again, it's Gamelit. .
The base-building wasn't very satisfying either. Maybe because the MC was hardly ever interacting with the base, but just moving stuff around in his UI, mostly at a distance. That was a let-down.
Narration was rather dry, which didn't help much.

The Bad

The author has a tendency to tell instead of show. So many scenes are explanations of important things that happened off-screen; it was frustrating, especially when those event held potential for conflict.
The time jump in the first third was really jarring. The MC jumps from wimp to badass in one chapter. He has a lot of Deus Ex Machina moments where things that work on others don't work on him, and it's never explained why.

The Conclusion

I had a lot of fun with this audiobook. I enjoyed so much I shunned my family for it. It's not perfect but I heartily recommend it anyway.

3 1/2 stars.
I have read a lot of LitRPG books recently. This is a little bit different than many because the main character is not an adventurer. Instead, he has been summoned to a medieval world where a kingdom on the edge of ruin needs him to replace the king to bring the country to victory. There are quests, battles and campaigns but the focus is on building the country and characters up. There is also friendship, betrayal, challenges, triumphs and tragedies.

I like how the character develops. Things do not go from one triumph to another; there are set backs and losses. This book has all the typical elements of an RPG story with levels and plenty of tables to see how the country and people progress. It is very long though, over a thousand pages. Parts do drag a little. Overall, I did enjoy this book.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC in return for an honest opinion.

I'm not really enjoying this much. It's based on the "4X" type of genre (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate), and I'm not really a fan of that.

You can't really use some ability to get ahead of everyone else, you have to wait for the countdown to complete to finish a task.
I'm not a strategy buff, and slow novels that try to show how much the protagonist isn't all powerful I dislike more.

From what I read so far, the protag hasn't once tried to break the world to his will. This was a by the numbers slog. The protag doesn't break anything, or find a way to exploit their way of life.

This tome of a book seems to be a one and done affair. I don't think I will read anything else by the author because he doesn't seem to find ways to exploit things, just goes along with it (yes, he does exploit it by the end, but he should have done that from the beginning).

This is an absolute BEAST of a book. Longest novel I've ever finished.

⚔️ LitRPG
⚔️ Civ+Skyrim-esque type of game (for me personally from my own gaming experience)
⚔️ In-depth world building
⚔️ Step-by-step gameplay with stats! (1 iron, 150 population, 200 XP gain, etc)
⚔️ Likeable MC and supporting characters
⚔️ MC transformation
⚔️ Likeable/hateable villains
⚔️ Certain epic battles*

~

💀 Repetitive
💀 *So-many-battles (at the halfway point, I can't even tell you how many battles there have been. I can't even tell them apart at this point. I even went back to check the synopsis to see if the story was meant to be about world domination, but it isn't?)

I would have LOVED to have seen more of Greyland and her people. Other than the MC's inner circle, we get almost nothing. Would have loved more of that and less of the same battles.

Summoned to an RPG world is another of those rare breeds, a one-book complete story. This one takes place on a world with competing factions, where multiple gods scheme to make their champion (and thus their faction) the strongest, so that they can rule the world for a thousand years beffore everything is reset and they play the game again. Apparently, this is the 7th go round, only this time, some of the champions aren't having it, and they go off script, producing a rather interesting and entertaining story that is a pretty good tale, and one I think most LitRPG fans will like having on their read shelf.

Stand Alone Book

Mistakes: For the length of this book the number of mistakes wasn’t to bad. I found seventeen and posted them on Goodreads.

Plot: This is a summoned to another world book where the Gods play a game with the mortals below.
My biggest problem with this book was that I found it overly simple. I’m not saying that it is bad, just that I found it overly simple and the system to be in the mc’s favor.

Characters: The Mc was never concerned or surprised by the new world that he finds himself in. This bothered me for the entire book. He just seemed to take everything in stride.
He had emotions, during combat and with people, but he just took the strange and unusual in stride.

I got 2/3 of the way through before I couldn’t go on. Stop reeling off great lists of meaningless numbers, you great bland oaf. Just going slowly from place to place, reeling off giant lists of numbers with no connection to anything. And what kind of army goes, “Send me 14 archers, 3 infantrymen, and 7 and 1/2 horses”, etc.?
