The Reluctant Companion

Rate this book
Sebastian might have the power to summon animals, but winning Jack over? Far more difficult.

As first encounters go, Jack and Sebastian’s isn’t ideal, leaving Jack nursing a grudge he’s not about to let go of in a hurry. Yet, if Jack is to find his missing sister, and Sebastian is to rescue his captured prince, they’ll need to set their differences aside and work as a team.

Jack is stubborn and somewhat volatile. Sebastian is vain and clearly in love with himself. But as the unlikely companions face all manner of dangers together, they grow closer. Rescuing the prince should be easy. Rescuing him from an impenetrable tower guarded by dragon-shifting knights? Okay, that part is harder.

But once the adventure is over, letting Sebastian go might be the hardest thing Jack has ever had to do.

The Reluctant Companion is an 85k MM enemies to lover’s story featuring murderous orcs, deadly creatures, and marauding bandits. Opposites attract in this light-hearted fantasy romance which mixes humor with action and adventure. Meet a whole cast of colorful characters in the first book of the 13 kingdoms series.

I took a bit to warm up to this book, partly because the first impression of Sebastian was truly appalling. But that is part of what makes it one of those rare unicorns I call "enemies to lovers done right". Jack cannot get along with Sebastian, and rightly so. But he cannot allow him to leave. Until he gets to know him (amidst shenanigans) and feelings flourish.
The conflict! The feels! The unexpected comedy!
I like the worldbuilding too, it is one of those where magic kind of is "a thing" as common as snow on the north or humidity in the tropics. If you don't live there, it's bound to be a novelty when you see it, but you know it's there. Same with other species. It was interestingly blasé about it. I like that approach.
I liked this book a lot more than I expected, and I'm down with keeping an eye on HL for news on the next book!

I've given this a B+ at AAR, so 4.5 stars

The first book in a new series by H.L. Day, The Reluctant Companion is a light-hearted fantasy adventure featuring an opposites-attract romance between a snarky farm boy and a handsome charmer who team up – reluctantly, as the title suggests – to undertake a quest, and fall for each other along the way. It’s a lot of fun with plenty of action and adventure, a nicely evoked faux-medieval setting and two engaging leads; it’s a great start to the series and I really enjoyed it.

Jack Straw is twenty-six and has lived pretty much his entire life in his small village on his family farm. But when we meet him, he’s sitting somewhat forlornly in a tavern miles from home wondering whether to continue the search for his missing sister, Annabelle, or if his dwindling resources mean he will have to return home without finding any news of her. His musings are interrupted when a small monkey drops onto the table and starts chittering angrily at him before jumping down and disappearing out the door. It’s only then that Jack notices his purse has also disappeared.

Dashing out into the street, Jack is in time to see the monkey making its way along the street at roof-level and follows, his eyes fixed on the animal until he bumps into a large, shirtless man whose good looks (and very tight trousers) are so utterly mesmerising that it’s a second or two before Jack notices the monkey sitting on his shoulder. Angry now, Jack demands the return of his money – only for the monkey to vanish in a shower of golden sparks. It figures. Not only is this guy gorgeous – and thoroughly aware of it – he’s been blessed with magic, too.

Sebastian – Bast to his friends – is rather delighted by the sharp-tongued and furious young man in front of him – being berated is such a refreshing change from being fawned over! He listens to Jack’s torrent of insults with good humour and then proposes a compromise. He needs the money to use as a stake in a gaming tournament the next day, and when he wins, he’ll be able to pay Jack way more money than was in the purse. Jack begrudgingly agrees, and the next day sees them heading off towards the town of Clearwater and the tournament – on what will turn out to be the first of many adventures.

Jack and Sebastian are a wonderful odd-couple. Jack may be sheltered and a bit naïve, but he’s courageous and doesn’t take any crap, and where Sebastian seems like a bit of a self-centred himbo, he is gradually revealed to be far more shrewd and far more generous of spirit than he at first appears.

I’m a sucker for well-written snark, and H.L. Day’s brand of it definitely works for me. The banter and quips flow quickly between these two, Sebastian capably fielding Jack’s sarcastic comments and giving as good as he gets. Attraction sparks between them from their first meeting, but Jack makes it very clear he’s not going to be just another notch on Sebastian’s bedpost; men like him are too accustomed to getting what they want and Jack recognises the potential for heartbreak. But as he gets to know Sebastian and to realise that there’s more to him than sex appeal and arrogance, Jack begins to wonder if having a bit of fun before they go their separate ways would be such a bad thing.

Jack and Sebastian have great chemistry and I enjoyed their slow burn romance, even though I’d have liked to feel a bit more of an emotional connection between them. That said, the book ends on a very firm HFN, and as it’s the first in a series, there’s clearly more to come. I’m intrigued by the hints at a mystery surrounding Sebastian – he’s clearly hiding something – and am eager to know more. The book is fast-paced, as Jack and Sebastian rush from one dangerous situation to another, and it’s nicely done, always on the move without being chaotic or too busy. On the negative side, I was a bit surprised at the ease with which Jack gives up the search for his sister – I’m guessing that perhaps that storyline will be picked up in a future instalment, so I’m not dinging the book for it – and something happens towards the end (after Jack has returned home) that didn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Overall though, I’m happy to recommend The Reluctant Companion to anyone looking for a light-hearted, magical adventure romp with plenty of action, a lot of laughs and a well-drawn central couple who express affection through snark.

″I don’t know. I’ve never abducted a prince. It always seemed like too much trouble. And what would I do with one? Stick him in the middle of a field and use him as a scarecrow?”

This was a generally entertaining, fun, easy read.

The world this is set in is pretty interesting - there’s some lore, smoothly added, just enough to build the setting without overwhelming. It also holds my attention, and left me wanting more (in a good way). I loved the maps - I am such a sucker for pretty colorful maps in fantasy books. It was further developed through the characters themselves, which is always neat when an author can do that so skillfully.

The romance was a little unbalanced for me. It was built in fits and starts, and at one point, a big part of their bonding was skipped over. I had a little trouble buying into their connection, though not too much. I’d have liked a little more depth and connection over the constant banter/sniping. Which i also wanted to address anyway.

The banter/sniping took up a large part of their interactions and book, and at times it felt a little too much for me. Sometimes I just wanted them to shut up and get a move on. In general, it was amusing to read otherwise, and worked well with their antagonistic relationship.

Overall, this was a pleasant read, with fun world building and a satisfying ending without cliffhanger but still a hook for their next book.

I received this ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review. All the opinions are my own.

DNF @ 25%. No rating.

I got excited when I read the premise, which made it sound like the characters were dealing with some serious issues. It also claimed to be enemies-to-lovers, which I adore. But I missed seeing the 'light-hearted' description, which makes this my bad. This is a fantasy rom-com, so it wasn't my thing at all. As a result, my complaints don't really matter because they're staples of the rom-com subgenre, but since I suffered through 25% of this, I earned the right to list my grievances.

Both MCs are incredibly annoying and unlikeable. Sebastian walks around without a shirt on, has Fabio-like flowing hair, everybody is obsessed with him and he starts the story by robbing, gaslighting and manipulating Jack into a forced proximity situation. All of this was supposed to be funny, but it's not my kind of humor.

Jack was a useless idiot. The guy is supposedly worried about his missing sister, yet he spends most of his time drinking in taverns and moaning about wanting to go home ASAP. Once Sebastian suggests Jack should go adventuring around the kingdom to expand his horizons, Jack's suddenly motivated to keep going. So...it wasn't his missing sister that motivates him to roam around the kingdom, but his desire for adventure. Great. If I ever go missing, do me a favor and don't send Jack to look for me. You might as well not send anybody because the result will be the same.

In addition, our dear farm boy is dumber than a pile of rocks or spoiled or both. He's incredibly worried about his lack of funds, yet he spends every day eating and drinking at taverns and he spends every night sleeping at an inn, because sleeping rough is a no-no for him. In addition, when he and Sebastian are sharing a room and Jack sleeps on the floor, he literally sleeps just on the floor so he ends up being very sore the next day. This dumb-dumb doesn't even consider using his pack as a pillow and despite him apparently having a blanket and spare clothes (because they're used later), he doesn't use them to create soft padding on the floor.

Everything about this was OTT and ridiculous. Sebastian's quest involves rescuing a prince, whose captivity involves the dumbest series of events I've ever heard of. The guy was kidnapped ages ago and everybody knows exactly where he's being kept. But nobody has tried to rescue him because the nearest town floods twice a year...??? (What the hell does that have to do with anything?!?) And there are scary monsters guarding the prince, but magic is a known thing in the kingdom and the author explains the royal family are well known magic users so...what's been preventing them from rescuing the guy a long time ago? Plus - Sebastian thinks he'll able to defeat the monsters using magic and he's just one guy and he's probably not the most experienced or knowledgeable wizard around. So why the hell haven't the King and Queen put together a rescue party ages ago, complete with fighters and magic users and rescued the prince? It makes no sense.

The fantasy elements were also completely unoriginal and it was clear that the story is meant to be a farce (basically, a gay version of The Princess Bride) where the author focused on the rom-com elements much more than the fantasy ones. The story includes every typical fantasy race (orcs, elves, dwarves etc) with zero effort to add some originality to any of them. The characters names include examples like Jack, Dan, Susan and Steve. I mean...seriously? Either the atmosphere-breaking names were another attempt at being funny or the author just didn't care.

In any case, this wasn't my cup of tea at all but because I'm pretty sure everything was done intentionally and the author wanted this to be a ridiculous, OTT rom-com farce, I won't rate it.

This was a lighthearted silly story that follows the main characters Jack (the reluctant companion, as it were) and Sebastian (who can summon animals with his magic) on a million adventures through the kingdoms. Like, really, they went on a ton of different adventures in one relatively short book. A card game tournament, larceny, traipsing through the woods, traipsing through the seas, traipsing through more woods, climbing towers to rescue princes, wandering around looking for Jack's sister, rescue missions, etc. None of the adventures really concluded or mattered long term to the story but they made for a quick read as you jumped from one to the next.

As for the romantic arc, Jack and Sebastian sure love to argue and are very bad at using their words and making decisions. The romance was as lighthearted and silly as the rest of the book. The next book in the series follows the same couple so hopefully we will get a more firm happily ever after as they continue adventuring around. Some answers about Jack's sister would be nice too.

In short, this is a fun and light read. Don't expect anything too deep or dramatic from it. And don't expect any lion shifters because so far there are none.

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Sooo. This book is difficult to judge. There wasn't much explanation about the world-building, yet I still liked it and didn't mind that it was only revealed step-by-step. The characters were not bad, neither of the two MCs really annoyed me - and there are tons of characters in other books that annoy me. But then neither did I really love them. Sebastian only showed his true (better) colours later in the book and Jack was a bit bland at times.
Some parts of the plot did not really make sense and there is many parts of the plot that I don't understand like why does Sebastian not reveal his intentions towards Montgomery sooner? Most of the questions circle around Sebastian and I suspect that some of them might be revealed in the next book in the series. But for me the romance missed something. It concentrated too much on looks and I didn't really feel the supposed love.
Yet on the other side there were a couple of funny moments that made me grin and I was never tempted to put the book aside or dnf it .

Just like Jack, I very much doubted that I'd end up liking Sebastian after his first impression. Thankfully he won me over and I had a very good time with this book. It had a nice balance between lighthearted and emotional moments, and their communication issues felt believable and understandable rather than frustrating.

Just look at that b e a u t i f u l cover.

A good fantasy book with a real sense of place of an alt-reality

Jack snipes and Sebastian baits and that makes for engaging dialogue.

Nice MCs, Sebastian is good natured, Jack can get riled up. It gives the book a genuine enemies to lovers vibe.

Plenty of adventure and a building of a romance at the same time helps keep you well and truly interested throughout.

Also good is that while this is series book #1, there is NO cliffhanger at the ending. It has a nice conclusion but also lets you know there will be a new adventure that I'm sure will overlap with a theme or 2 from this book.

The Reluctant Companion is happy reading from start to finish.

This was a fun read with a premise I love in fantasy romance: two reluctant allies that embark on a quest together. I also love this kind of pairing: the small, stubborn and uptight MC with the flirty MC with no boundaries. The light-hearted writing style and the fast-paced plot make this a very easy and entertaining read. The world HL Day created for this story is interesting, and we discover it at the same time as Jack, a farm boy who hasn’t seen much outside of his village. There are some nice maps included in the book, which was pretty cool. The magic system was also fun, and no, this is not about a lion-shifter, as the cover would suggest at first glance: Sebastian can summons animals, and I liked all the possibilities that come with that!

I came in not expecting a deeply emotional book, which is fine, but I still wish there was a little more to Sebastian and Jack’s connection and relationship dynamics. I wish I felt a little more chemistry between these two. This is not truly an enemies-to-lovers romance, but there’s definitely some animosity there from the first meeting. That makes for some fun banter early in the books, but the constant bickering throughout annoyed me a little by moments. Like, we get it, he stole all of your money and left you stranded in an unknown village miles away from home, god, get over it, you know what I mean? There’s so much action and adventure in this book, and the characters are always going from place to place on their quest, but I wished it slowed down a bit to allow those two to connect more. The rare moments when it does (on the ship, for example) show that HL Day can write softer, romantic moments very well.

There is no cliffhanger in this, but the story of Sebastian and Jack will continue in the next book.

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a fun and fast-paced fantasy book, especially if you like reluctant allies and Only One Bed!

I received a free copy of this book and am providing my honest review voluntarily.

Just what I needed at this moment, a lighthearted, entertaining, humorous fantasy story with a stubborn grumpy farm boy (don’t call him that!) who doesn’t shy away from insulting his companion, a vain smug sunshine who can summon animals.

One is on his way to rescue Prince Montgomery from the kingdom of Quatasta and get married, one is looking for his missing sister.

On this quest, they have to face many obstacles. (I can spoil it’s all quite harmless, on forehand you’ll understand it will be all right). They have to make sure to stay alive by saving eachother. The enemies to lovers part is as slow as their progress to resolve their goals, and that is all in contrast to the pace of this journey because that was fast. We roll from one adventure into the other.

The silliness is contagious, I snorted and giggled often. They argue and fight over everything, yes everything! Sebastian excels poking Jack. Jack is furious about everything that’s Sebastian. Until he grows on him, and his stubborn heart is more committed, but by then it’s maybe a bit too late.

It’s a good-humored fantasy read, silly even, emotions going around, all entertainingly and smoothly written.
It ends with a hfn, a new adventure will wait for them in the next installment.

3.5/4 ⭐️Fantasy but light hearted and fun. Farm boy and unrepentant flirter go on a quest to rescue Prince. Shenanigans happen on the way.

Jack is a farmers boy that has never been far from his village but decides to leave to try to find out what happened to his sister. One night he meets Sebastian, a magician with not many scruples and after a couple of misunderstandings they team up.

I really liked the dynamic. Jack while naive about the outside world is not sure of himself, doesn’t fall for Sebastians charm and gives it as good as he gets.
They bicker all the way to rescuing the Prince and it’s really fun to see their relationship evolve. Jack is not as good as he thinks he is, and Sebastian has more heart than previously thought.

Looking forward to reading the next adventure!

DNF! After 1st chapter.

There is no way Sebastian can become someone i sympathize with. You stole and you pretend nothing happens and your victim just go sit with you at the table.

I loved every moment of this enemies to lovers, opposites attract romance. Sebastian and Jack are so much fun, for characters that truly are so opposite they really do throw some witty banter at each other. Circumstances bring them together and what a meeting it turns out to be. It leads them on an epic quest filled with action and adventure and a delightful romance to keep things interesting. Jack really makes Sebastian work long and hard to gain first his begrudging friendship and then his heart.
There’s no denying their attraction to each other but this is a slow burn romance so it does take some time for the heat to turn up as Jack can be very stubborn!

This is a lighthearted fun and engaging read with a wonderful cast of main and secondary characters, minimal angst and a promise of more epic adventures for Sebastian and Jack. I’m looking forward to more in the series.

An entertaining and fun read.

I definitely enjoyed the adventures that Jack and Sebastian got up to on their journey. This was light-hearted, angst-free and exactly what I was looking for at the time. I liked the fantasy world that this author has built and enjoyed watching Jack take the chances he wouldn't usually dare to.

I loved the constant banter between the two and I cannot wait to learn more about Sebastian cos I know there's more to him than he's letting on.

I'm definitely going to follow these two into the next book in the series.

I liked the cover...the story was only an ok read.
The banter and humor was good and I'm always here for some good slow burn but I felt the 'quest' made zero sense and how they pulled it off was just too easy. I felt robbed.
Don't think I'll continue this.

I was laughing so hard you could have rolled me, belly up, like a kitty waiting for a tummy rub! I’ve wanted to read H.L. Day for a while and am grateful to be initiated with “The Reluctant Companion.”

Ms. Day pairs the very proper Jack (who is on his first trip away from his farming community) with Sebastian, a gorgeous traveling cad, whose looks ease his way. Jack is searching for his older sister who vanished from home without sign of a struggle. Sebastian, who has the power to see through the eyes of animals he magically conjures, is on a quest to rescue a ransomed prince. His prize would be the royal’s hand in marriage. Sebastian entraps Jack to escort him by stealing Jack’s money, then promising to double it in a tournament, which Sebastian wins (cheats!) using his animals to see his opponent’s cards.

This enemies-to-lovers, opposites-attract duo set out upon an odyssey which will test their true values, and, of course, make Jack swallow his declaration to Sebastian. “’I would think that I might have turned my sexual interests to farmyard animals rather than you.’” But if they successfully rescue the prince, will Sebastian’s fascination with attention and gold lure him to the prince, and away from Jack?

Both men must face themselves to reach their objective. For example, Jack ridicules Sebastian’s desire to win a prince, only to recognize his own romantic fantasy in his desire to mate a “considerate man” (i.e. perfect man.) As with all odysseys, both men must find courage. “’Being scared isn’t a bad thing. Letting fear rule your heart to the point where it stops you from getting what you want is, though,’” one of Sebastian’s friends notes.

I loved the action, never too violent, never boring and always consistent with this relatable Middle-Ages fantasy world. Ms. Day writes simply, crisply, vibrantly, choosing actions which convey more complicated motivations. Her clear images, awakened my senses and kept me completely engaged.

More importantly, Jack and Sebastian’s witty banter, which ran throughout the story, was a non-stop delight.

“’Let me guess. You just stand there, take your shirt off, let your hair blow about in the breeze and admirers flock to you,’” Jack challenges.
“’I would say that’s fairly accurate, yes,’” Sebastian admits.
“’Have you ever considered being humbler?’”
“There was a slight pause while Sebastian thought about it. ‘No, I can’t say I have.’”

Color me surprised when I find a light read that earns 5 hearts! If you’re seek adventure without leaving home comforts, enjoy loud guffaws and the whisper of romance, H.L Day’s “The Reluctant Companion” is cotton candy addictive. While it’s an HEA standalone, there are sufficient unanswered questions to tempt us to the next installment, which promises to be equally engulfing!

The good
+ Jack's constant frustration with Sebastian. The things he said were pure gold, and I loved that he had no filter
+ Sebastian's spirit. Jack was not an easy companion, but Sebastian never let that drag him down
+ Jack's pettiness. He was awful at communication, but what he said and did just really vibed with me
+ Sebastian's magic. Animals make everything better
+ Their inside jokes
+
+

The neutral
o I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. My review remains honest and unbiased
o This book is ridiculous, both the story and the characters. There are many weird people in this world. That's not a criticism, but you should realize that before you start reading
o

The bad
- I think Jack's conversation with Leofric was just awkward. I didn't feel like Jack actually liked Sebastian back then, so it was just Leofric looking for things that weren't there
- The feelings they supposedly had for each other didn't really jump off the page for me. I didn't find them very believable at all, especially because Sebastian was into Jack rather early on already, yet never really acted like it. Sure, they were very bad at communicating with each other, but as the reader we spent time in their heads and they still didn't convey those thoughts and feelings to me
- Jack kind of forgot all about his family back at home. Obviously, this was for the convenience of the story, but his mom was already so worried and now she had another child to worry about
- Jack spent a lot of his energy slut-shaming Sebastian. Not only uncool, but also hypocritical since he admitted to also enjoying casual sex when someone was available. Not cool, Jack!

While this book didn't wow me, it was a very entertaining read regardless. I just really felt Jack and his (justified!) asshole behavior. I would recommend this book to those looking for a light-hearted and slightly ridiculous fantasy story with a very vain magician who hardly ever wears a shirt and the grumpy farmer that's immune to his charms and also kind of hates him. Nothing too special, but still enjoyable.

I loved this! It was funny, witty and charming. Jack does not fall for Sebastian’s charms right away and that was so great to see because usually enemies to lovers has the characters giving in to attraction way too early. I just fell in love with both of these characters, Sebastian was definitely different than he first presented himself and Jack has that smart mouth the entire book.

The romance was a very slow build and that worked perfectly. The humor was spot on and the story flowed nicely. This author is really one that I need to read more of. This isn’t my first book of theirs so I wasn’t surprised that I liked it so much. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

If I had any niggles it would be that they got out of some situations too easy but then again that often left them in another precarious situation so I can’t really fault it. Plus if the situations they found themselves in were longer the book probably wouldn’t have flowed so well.

A definite favorite read his year!!!! This left me smiling every time I was reading!

I feel like this had a lot of potential but just didn’t quite live up to expectations. So much of the conflict could have been resolved with the MCs just talking to each other. And I never quite bought into Jack’s extreme animosity towards Sebastian.

I was also very confused about the many, many loose ends in the plot until I realized it would be a series following the same couple.

Overall it was a fun read, if the tropes appeal I would recommend, just keep expectations tempered.

So, this book had a major disadvantage as I read it directly after The Prince's Poisoned Vow, which advanced already to one of my favourites. So this one had a hard start

That was not made easier by the fact that Sebastians behaviour at the beginning was horrible, entitled, arrogant and did not endear him to me.
But that changed considerably over the course of the book and for most of it, he now is my favourite MC.

Jack's character is not an easy one to like as he is not very nice sometimes .... nevertheless I think he is a perfect counterpart to Sebastian.

The story is quite well written and fun to read for most of it. The Keaton part is a bit ridiculous 🙄 but all in all it is a fun read.

So, in the end due to my difficulties at the beginning 3,5 stars rounded up to 4 stars as I read it in one sitting and had a blast for most of the time.
Looking forward to the next book, which definitely will read.

Sebastian took a lot of getting used to. He was a lot. His magic was cool though, in particular the monkey. Without Leofric the relationship would've gone nowhere, so yay for friend interference. Couldn't stand the prince, so him being shoved around was entertaining. Curious where these two are going to end up next, also wondering what's up with the sister.

While I enjoyed the first bit, it eventually got tiresome. It never felt like it got off the ground. There isn’t a whole lot of plot, a lot of stuff is glossed over, what I thought would be a slow burn did a complete 180 about 2/3 in. It went from “no way, no how” to “get in me” in a second… literally.

I’m surprised that Sebastian didn’t … but I guess that will pop up sometime later in the series… for which I will not be sticking around.

Snark calories

A lovely snarky romance, which made me smile so much. Sebastian is dreadful, so conceited, but he definitely met uhis match in Jack. A great adventure, I love how Jack totally turns his nose up at Sebastian. Sebastian just can't conceive how anyone won't just fall to their knees for him. It totally made me feel happy as I was reading it. Thank you Ms Day, loved it. Well written, must read, if you need cheering up 😊

A Joyfully Jay review.

The Reluctant Companion is the first book in H.L. Day’s 13 Kingdoms series. The story is an enemies to lovers, road trip saga with a healthy dose of lighthearted humor. Jack and Sebastian are at odds right from the start, as Sebastian steals all Jack’s money. Jack is infuriated by Sebastian’s bold thievery, but perhaps even more outraged because he can’t help but lust after the gorgeous, cocky man. So even as the pair are at odds, it is quite clear that Jack is into Sebastian despite himself (and Sebastian makes no secret of his desire for Jack). So there is a lot of banter and insults and Jack trying to convince himself he really doesn’t want to see Sebastian bathing and it makes for a fun dynamic. And, of course, eventually Jack comes to realize that there is a lot more to Sebastian than the shirtless man whore with seemingly no morals. The two have a fun dynamic and, even as they argue, there is a sweetness between them that shines through. I would have a liked a little more character development here, and there seems to be pretty clearly something going on with Sebastian that gets hinted at but is never resolved or even really addressed in this book.

DNF at 30%. I think I had my quota of silly books for this months and it’s only the beginning. Honestly, I don’t enjoy fantasy that much but I gave it a try because I really like this author’s writing and I adored their other books but this one here is silly and I’m just not in the mood for banter and childish characters or nonsensical plot.
