Every Rule Worth Breaking

Rate this book
Rules are made for a reason, but some rules are meant to be broken.

After dropping out of NYU, moving across the country, and spending the last two years as the co-owner of a successful activewear brand, Mackenzie Jean has decided it’s time to go back to school. Does she want to finish her degree? Absolutely. But enrolling at Michigan State University is about so much more. Somewhere along the way, she lost herself in the fog of her anxiety, and it’s time she rediscovers who she is.

Aiden Fuller is an MSU hockey standout set to embark on his senior season. He’s flying high, all of his dreams within reach, until a seemingly harmless dare from his teammates ends with Aiden staring down a ten-game suspension. Now, he’s terrified he’s on the verge of losing the one thing in his life that means the most to him.

When a chance encounter during Welcome Weekend pulls Kenzie and Aiden into each other’s orbits, suddenly all the rules they’ve carefully laid out for their lives seem to be hindering more than helping.

Can Aiden be a safe place for Kenzie, a place where her mind is at rest and she can simply be? And will Kenzie help Aiden realize he can have it all—the game and the girl?

Kenzie is 23 and the co-owner of a successful sportswear brand with her brother, the famous hockey player Brent Jean. After dropping out of New York University (NYU) several years earlier after struggling with anxiety, Kenzie is interested in having the full college experience and decides to attend Michigan State University (MSU). Here she meets Aiden, a star hockey player facing down a ten-game suspension after streaking through campus on a dare. Kenzie is reluctant to date a hockey player and Aiden is afraid of letting anyone get in the way of his commitment to his sport. Will the two be able to overcome their hesitations and find their HAE? Obviously, yes.

I liked this one but definitely didn't love it. As a Michigan native who attend The University of Michigan, I enjoyed all of the hyperlocal references, like Briarwood Mall and Ricks. If I hadn't attended a Michigan college, I might have found these references a little unnecessary. For example, the author referred, by name, to the dining hall stations in MSU's dining hall. I also couldn't stand that the main character's nickname in this book was "Bunny", in reference to puck bunny. The book also felt like it was missing some depth - their reasons for not dating weren't very hard to overcome and they didn't seem to really do any work to overcome them. I enjoyed reading this, and it would be a great autumn read, but I wouldn't go out of my way to read it again.

Thanks so much to Amanda Chaperon and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for this ARC. Every Rule Worth Breaking is available now and is free on KU!

Things that annoyed me about Every Rule Worth Breaking:
1. The over details. Oh my gosh. I don't need to know every single thing. It was too much and excessive and drove me up a wall. Not to mention the fact that details were constantly rebrought up in the over detailed descriptions.
2. It's cosmic fries, not crack fries. HopCat changed that a few years back.
3. I love East Lansing. I've now been in the East Lansing area for nine years, starting with my freshman year of college at MSU and then getting a job in a nearby town afterwards. I haven't always lived directly in East Lansing, but I do currently. This book was too much. If I didn't know MSU and East Lansing really well, I would be getting lost in all the details. Like, no one needs to know that they walked up MAC Avenue. Or that they were parking in the Breslin Center parking lot. It's fine. Some details can be skipped. I promise.
4. I don't think she can mention Izzo by name, which cracked me up, not gonna lie.
5. Aiden's over eagerness to seduce Kenzie. I don't love him. Like, I do, but not as a man. I don't like his thoughts.
6. Kenzie's personality jumps so much. It's weird. I don't like it.
7. WHY THE FLIP IS SHE MAD AT HIM FOR NOT SLEEPING WITH HER WHEN SHE WAS DRUNK??? He did the right thing by saying no. She couldn't consent and he was respecting what she'd told him literally the night before. What the frick???
8. The way Kenzie and Aiden ultimately got together felt so weird to me. It was so sudden. Like, Kenzie went from hating him to being so super lovey in like, three pages. And nothing happened besides a dare. It was weird and I wasn't a fan.
9. Kenzie's anxiety doesn't feel like it's portrayed well to me. It's not a consistent thing. And yes, anxiety is sometimes sporadic and unpredictable, but it also doesn't disappear for a month and then randomly come back in. Which is how this book felt. It was all or nothing. And anxiety is never nothing.
10. I can tell this was self published, just because of the typos alone.
11. I am uncomfortable by someone describing someone's entrance when pregnant as "entering their little powwow belly first."
12. Brent is a prick.
13. There is zero chance of Kenzie and Aiden lasting. I'm sorry, but it's true.

Amanda Chaperon kills it again with the third book in this interconnected hockey romance series. Each can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading them all to get the full impact!

I absolutely loved the anxiety representation in this one! It was so accurate - anyone with anxiety will easily relate to Kenzie. The conflict between Kenzie and Aiden was so raw and real, but you can tell they both continue to choose each other through the stress of college and looming professional careers.

If you haven’t picked up this series yet- you need to! There’s a trope for everyone in east book ♥️

TW: sexism, SA

Received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get through it, and here’s why:

- The MMC admits to seeing the FMC as a “challenge” which is objectifying and demeaning
- He tried to bribe her to go on a date with him by saying he’d physically let go of her
- I hate the “________ bunny” thing in any context. This book uses “puck bunny” but along the same lines as “buckle bunny”, “bat bunny”, etc and it’s derogatory to women. Just let women like things.
- They were forced to have their first kiss in a very public manner
- The last straw was the prison r*pe joke. It was not funny and in very poor taste

I tried to get through this book, but the behaviors in the first 40% were not tolerable for me. Maybe some of this gets resolved in the back half, but I won’t be sticking around to find out.

I really enjoyed reading this book and the characters were so enjoyable! ✨

This story starts with Mackenzie Jean. She started a sportswear brand with her famous brother Brent but wasn’t happy with her job anymore. Kenzie decided to go back to college and that’s when she met Aiden in a bar. His friends dared him to go on a date with her and he just couldn’t say no. When she needs his help, they start an agreement that benefits them both.. ✨

I loved the open conversation about anxiety and grief in this book.

Thank you to Netgalley, Amanda Chaperon and the publisher for providing me with this copy. All opinions are my own.

I really wanted to like this book but I struggled not to dnf all the time.
I have read a few sports romances and I usually love them but this one was a big miss for me.
Aiden was just a walking red flag especially in the beginning of the book.

I don’t want to be too negative because I’m sure some people will love this but a couple things that I disliked are:

- He keeps messaging and contacting her after they met for literally 5 minutes in a bar and she is obviously not interested, which he doesn’t accept and views it more like a challenge to 'wear her down'

- I‘m all for self love and confidence but how often do you really have to tell yourself in your head how hot you are or even out loud. It quickly turns into arrogance rather than seeming confident

- The whole dares thing in general is already a big no but then he was dared to ask her out which is problematic by itself already but she didn’t even care like, my anxiety could never

- Then he keeps calling her bunny even tho she said a million times she doesn‘t like it (and they‘re not even dating like why use a nickname?!) and then he also kind of forces her to reply by adding his contact into her phone and physically standing in the way until she agrees or something like that

After that he obviously changes more and more but still has his asshole moments like telling her she can‘t come to his games because he can‘t focus or he doesn‘t know how to fit her into his life after he started playing again.
Anyways, besides Aiden and his friends, Kenzie‘s brother was just as annoying.

I love a protective brother but he‘s such an overbearing asshole up to the point that she lied to him because she was scared to tell him she was unhappy at her job and then he also wants to dictate her life and who she can date and whatever like, no thank you.

Well, I was sadly a bit disappointed but thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an arc!

Thank you to Amanda Chaperon & NetGalley for gifting me an E-ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review.

A college hockey romance with some of the best anxiety rep I’ve ever read!

Don’t date hockey players. That is Mackenzie Jean’s ultimate rule. But when hockey captain and sunshine personified, Aiden Fuller pops into her life unexpectedly, can she keep the lines from blurring?

Everything about this has me SO excited, the setting, the characters, the plot its all done so incredibly, Amanda Chaperon has created a masterclass in presenting anxiety in such a real and authentic way.

I loved Mackenzie and Aiden, their banter was top notch. I also really loved the level of communication and understanding they shared with each other throughout everything. You can really tell that these two are soulmates and the chemistry is off the charts.

All of the side characters were fleshed out and felt very real too, you can tell Amanda has carefully crafted EVERYTHING down to the finest of details and I absolutely adore it.

ALSO…the cover??? Hello?? Absolutely STUNNING!

I might revisit this book however I often thought to myself...wtf am I reading??

The overuse of "puck bunny" especially when Mackenzie does not like that nickname and keeps asking Aiden not to call her that. The constant talk of how hot Aiden thinks he is.

Also her brother isn't even overprotective just super overbearing.

Tough read.

“You, Fuller, make every rule worth breaking.”

My absolute favorite book by Amanda Chaperon! And that’s saying a lot because she knocked it out of the park with her debut novel For the Boys. But this one was special. This one had Aiden. This one had Kenzie. (And Brent and Berk and Mitch and Lexie and Nate because apparently good things do happen to common mortals such as ourselves!)

Aiden is easily one of my favorites in sports/college romance books. He was so refreshing, so easy to love and yet so vulnerable and messed up. I was scared for a moment. I was afraid all that insecurity would lead him to f up. But that’s not who Aiden is. Aiden is perfect.

But let’s talk about Kenzie. Let’s talk about this talented, strong woman who is choosing herself for the first time in a while. Let’s talk about how she lives with sometimes debilitating anxiety and still shines brighter than the sun. Let’s talk about how despite all she held strong, knowing… understanding what he needed. Let’s talk about when she was at her worse she still put on a strong face because she would never hurt those she loves. That’s how big her heart is. Or maybe let’s not talk about all of that. Let’s read it instead 😁

What’s inside;
🖤sports romance — 🏒
🖤college romance
🖤fake dating
🖤anxiety rep
🖤no third act breakup

this book was so good 🥺 you know that I love a hockey romance and this one was just incredible. I loved the main characters, Mackenzie and Aiden, and all the other characters

this book might have the best anxiety rep I’ve ever read in a book and I think I loved this book even more because of that

I loved the way that Kenzie and Aiden communicate (no miscommunication trope, thank you so much) and how they were so understandable about each other

Every Rule Worth Breaking was fun, sweet, spicy & swoony. 100% I will be reading the previous books by the author because I need to know more about the other couples in the series.

and can’t wait for future books in this series 🫶🏻

A trip through AC’s backlist was the perfect excuse I needed to finally read this one and I’m actually so mad at myself for not reading this one sooner. My new fave by far!!

Aiden and Kenzie are so cute!! Love a book set in MI, love the hockey vibe, and love love a boy who is down bad.

I was sorta getting annoyed with the back and forth of Kenzie’s feelings but the way her anxiety was represented was so perfect I can’t fault her for it.

I loved all the other characters too. I am immediately starting book 2 because I’m not ready to say goodbye to this series yet.

- fake dating
- anxiety rep
- hate to love

Mackenzie Jean runs a successful business with her pro-hockey brother. She has been thinking about moving out on her own but first she wants to finish her college degree that she started while at NYU. She suffers from anxiety but has decided to go all in with her education at a new school while finding herself again.

Aiden Fuller is a MSU hockey player who gets suspended from the game for partaking in a dare from his teammates. While on suspension he meets Kenzie at a local bar during Welcome Weekend. He knows she is different when he first meets her - she could be “the one” for him. Unfortunately for him, she does not date hockey players and takes off once she realizes that he is one. Along comes a little fake dating, and the rest is history...with a few bumps along the way.

I absolutely LOVED this book! This is the first book that I have read by Amanda and it certainly won't be the last! It is part of a series but can be read as a stand-alone. I really enjoyed her writing style and how I felt like I was right there on the MSU campus. I was so excited to find out that this book takes place in my state/area. I loved knowing the places that were mentioned in here! My kids have several friends that go to MSU and so the author's note was a lovely tribute that really hit home for me.

It was refreshing to see a character with anxiety representation and how this strong FMC was a strong, successful college student. And oh Aiden…he is a hunk! I loved seeing his transformation in this book from a player to a good boyfriend. The chemistry between them was just sparking off the pages. I absolutely loved Kenzie’s sass!

All of the side characters were fun to meet - I can’t wait to go back and read some of their stories to get to know them better and I REALLY can’t wait to read the next of this series!

The only thing that I really didn’t care for was the over usage of the “bunny” nickname, especially after she said it bothered her on multiple occasions

This book has…
Fake Dating
Sports Romance
Found Family
Mental Health Awareness

Thank you to Grey’s Promotion & Amanda Chaperon for the ARC of this book for my honest review!

Let me tell you, this book resurrected me out of the coffin of a slump and I am ALIVE, BABY!

I love hockey romances. That isn’t a secret. That’s been my bread and butter of the romance genre. But, in all honesty, they can become repetitive. This one? WONDERFULLY REFRESHING.

Not only is Amanda Chaperon just ridiculously talented, the plot was interesting and unique and the characters were loveable and complex. The anxiety representation was absolutely wonderful and well written. The relationship issues were realistic and well paced. All of it was just… *chef’s kiss.*

I love Aiden, but I’m head over heels for Brent Jean. Give me more. Give me all of him. Give me 100 of him.

I also love a good gang of friends, which this book has. Asher is a lovely, little weirdo, and Jack is the loyal and wise bestie. It was a pleasure to sit at their lunch table for the duration of these pages.

Amanda Chaperon has solidified herself as an auto-buy author for me. Not to mention, she’s the nicest and most kind hearted person on planet earth.

Read this book and anything else she puts out!!! NOW!!!

Girl who doesn't want to live in the shadow of her big brother attends his alma mater, is mad everyone recognizes her, and uses threats her brother will beat people up who bother her. Aiden even says that Kenzie is unrecognizable from her brother at a distance. Eww.

This book is so toxic, egotistical, and childish. The anxiety representation was inconsistent, and the communication between the characters was abhorrent. Aiden becomes more determined to make Kenzie fall in love after every no. She acknowledges his toxicity and then ignores it because he's attractive. Her brain repeatedly tells her the situation is fucked, but she let's her nervous system tell her head to STFU.

Kenzie: "You can't just go around kissing people because you feel like it!"
Aiden: "And why the hell not?!"

Wtf. Consent is cool, kids.

Also, the overexplaining of everything was exhausting. I don't need to know all the street names, organization names, building history, college football rules, etc to enjoy the story.

I’m DNFing at 24%.

I just can’t keep going with this book for multiple reasons.

First, Aiden (MMC) is a walking red flag. If I wanted to read one of those I would’ve picked up a dark/taboo romance,

Things that are troubling about Aiden in the first 24%:
-He comments on kenzies drink when first meeting her and says she drinks that for the low calories or dumb health reasons and then says girls don’t get a body like that by not caring about what they eat.

-After she disappears on him at the bar, he spends the next few weeks texting her around 20 times, per his estimate, with no response from her.

-He stated that he’d wear her down, it was just a matter of time.

-He’s cocky to the extreme by his inner monologue going on about how he’s extremely attractive with an impressive physical presence and a hockey players stamina, no slouch in bed and women of MSU knew it. And then going right into “but he’s also a nice guy”

-He gets dared to get her to go on a date with kenzie and he intends to not fail. This reminded me of She’s all that, but instead of him being Freddie Prince, he’s Paul walker in that movie.

-He calls her “bunny” as in puck bunny, even though she repeatedly tells him not to.

-He asks Kenzie “what’s with the animosity” when she doesn’t want to talk to him, because she doesn’t know him and he won’t leave her alone.

-kenzie checks a message on her phone and laughs and then replies, aiden wants to know what’s so funny and she says nothing and then he just grabs her phone out of her hands and starts adding his number to her contacts so she won’t ignore him anymore.

-when she gets up and leaves, he follows her and grabs her arm and won’t let go and says if she agrees to go on a date with him he’ll let her go. She eventually yanks her arm from his grasp.

Yes, that was all from the first 24% and I honestly don’t care if he changes or whatever. Those things were not ok. Especially for someone he knew for all of 10 minutes.

Now onto other things that bothered me about this book. Yes, there’s more.

-Kenzies big hockey player brother Brent. He’s a complete overbearing asshole. Kenzie starts to have a panic attack just thinking about how he’ll react about her going back to school. He also gives off red flag vibes.

-I’ve listened to videos by black book reviewers who have stated that they’re tired of their skin being described as some kind of food in books and in this instance a stunning black woman is described as having “skin the color of a cup of coffee with a splash of cream in it”

-While this is the first in a series, there were 2 other books before this one that involved Kenzies brother Brent and his wife and another couple that’s introduced. I could tell by how much backstory they were getting that they must’ve had books before this, so I went and confirmed that. And while I’m sure this is still a standalone, there’s a lot of things I’m sure would be picked up easier and understanding the dynamics may have made reading this not as bad.

That’s all I can think of for now. I’m really disappointed by this book because as someone who has bad anxiety, I’m always looking for books with good anxiety rep. But unfortunately everything else about this book was a huge turn off for me

“Falling in love is their greatest defiance of all.”

➼ overall, i did enjoy this book. i did enjoy this story, even tho i started it bc i was bored in theme park lines but i do like this story and i intended on reading it anyways. i liked the plot and the characters and the mental health [specifically anxiety] representation. i liked how the author did not sugarcoat how bad anxiety gets without it becoming a show. i find the human to be the scariest place of all and with anxiety, sometimes it feels like im trapped, so i did see some of myself within kenzie. one thing i did not like was the third person pov, there's nothing wrong with it its just not my favorite. the writing was definitely easy to read and very romcom-ish, not super deep emotionally [like i like complex stories and characters] but it was still enjoyable and easy on the mind. overall on my scale, i would recommend it, its a little better than an average romcom to me.
“You make me feel safe, Fuller.”“I promise you, bunny,” he said against her neck. “I will always be a safe place for you.”

➼ ngl i liked watching kenzie and aiden's relationship develop and read their love story. there was no third act breakup so i was a fan of that [there's a moment in the end where they were miserable but not technically broken up]. kenzie leaving the company, going back to school to do something that was hers was admirable. i loved that she wanted to be separate from the company and her brothers both being figures to look up to. i also loved watching her fall for aiden with having anxiety and her mind feeling like she didn't deserve him, it was amazing seeing how she developed as a person. as for aiden's character, he was much different than i expected. he was described as a playboy but he def was a relationship man. he was such a gentlemen but also respectful of her individuality and also just how supportive her was. they both communicated well, and even in their hard times officering out their relationship, they were very mature about it and how they were figuring out their balances. i just wish we got to know more of the backstory or complexities of these characters, bc i just feel like its there.

Kenzie Jean is the sister of big name hockey star Brent Jean - because of that, she doesn’t date hockey players.

Aiden Fuller is a star hockey player. Who doesn’t “date” and doesn’t do relationships. And he wants Kenzie.

I wanted to like this book because the premise of Kenzie going back to college to find herself and figure out what she wants to do felt perfect. But the plot fell short after that and parts of the book just seemed to drag on longer than necessary.

I also felt a lot of Jekyll and Hyde with Aiden - his incessant texting her after she said no. He seemed very controlling at times. But then he seemed very sweet and caring. I felt so much whiplash from his demeanor for how quickly he changed.

I appreciated the mental health rep but I didn’t see or feel the presence of Kenzie’s anxiety. I felt a little let down about that.

Overall - 3 stars because it left me feeling meh but some parts had me feeling hopeful for a good book.

Rule 1: Don’t date hockey players.

Every Rule Worth Breaking is an addictive hockey romance following Kenzie and Aiden. It's fake dating at this finest--messy, complicated, and downright steamy.

I was totally obsessed reading this one; binging it well within a weekend. Another Chaperon book that slapped me in the face with hockey and Michigan State nostalgia.

i dropped literally everything i was reading when i received this arc because of how much i loved both for the boys and on the line. lemme just say this did NOT disappoint!!!!!

amanda just has a way of writing characters that genuinely feel real and that will stick with you for a long time after reading. and you can tell she is a fan of hockey by the way she writes the game and the players, its truly amazing.

i was so so excited to read about aiden and kenzie (especially since meeting kenzie in for the boys) and i absolutely love them. aiden is such a sweet boy and i love how much he cares about kenzie and kenzie is so relatable that i swear i was reading my own thoughts in writing.

i am soooooo excited to keep reading in this universe and see who the next book is about... im guessing jack and jess???? but with some sofia drama??? idk but im so excited

again thank you so so so much to amanda for giving me an arc. keep on doing what you do cus you have me HOOKED.

The communication in this book is TOP TIER. The messages and open conversations between Kenzie and Aiden were so freaking refreshing from the typical miscommunication trope used. I love that Kenzie is a strong FMC with anxiety representation and a successful business. I loved how patient and kind Aiden was with Kenzie.  He was such a big softie always caring for her. I absolutely loved how freaking real and relatable Kenzie's anxiety was. The friendships between Kenzie, Berkley, Jessica and Sophia as well as Aiden, Jack and the boys was so freaking cute too. I would definitely read more from this author and look forward to the next book.

I’ve seen books from Amanda floating around alot here on booksta and was excited to finally get to read one. This is a new book that lives in the same world as few of her previous books but it’s not in the same series.

I’m definitely in my hockey romance era and I’m all for it. Aiden does not disappoint and seeing as when you first meet him he is streaking across campus you know he’s going to be a good time. But he’s also a softie, under all the arrogance and ego at least.

I really liked seeing Kenzie’s anxiety on the page. Every time I read a book with representation for mental health and the importance of care in that area I want to just give it a hug! I don’t struggle with anxiety to the degree she does but I could relate in a lot of ways.

I really liked Aiden and Kenzie togehter too, though some of their interactions and communication issues were a little frustrating. It also took me a bit to get fully invested in the book, I don’t know if I was just too tired reading the beginning or if it was a little slow, but by the end I was definitely really into the story and it took me less than 24 hours to read the whole thing.

Thanks to @netgalley and @achaperonwrites for the advanced copy!

I just realized I never wrote my review for this one and I’m so mad at myself!!

Give me all the hockey romance please! I loved the two mcs in this one and how they came together. I think the FMC’s situation is unique and overall enjoyed her journey especially her journey with her brother. The therapy/mental health rep in this was fantastic and added a great element to the story. And again… hockey boys! Cannot wait for more!

Thank you Amanda for letting me read this super early and I’m so dang sorry I never reviewed it. I’m the worst!
