Old gods threaten to awaken, called forth by secrets that were thought to have been long since buried.
Nessa might have survived her encounter with the king, the malevolent ruler of the Twelve Kingdoms, that doesn’t mean she’s out of harm’s way. The line between being the king’s prisoner and being his guest is perilously thin, and one misstep could spell her downfall and her death.
Trapped in the king’s court, friendship is an illusion and allies are hard to find. Gossip is as deadly as a blade, and Dragon Riders are as cruel as they are beautiful. With her powers stirring, Nessa battles for survival, and along the way, she begins to uncover the truth of her lineage, and realises that the king isn’t the only one who desires to spill her blood.
Prophecies are in play and destiny cannot be denied, but will Nessa survive long enough to become who she was born to be?
Kimberley J. Ward, aka The Creator of Curiosities, is a dyslexic introvert who grew up in rural Dorset. She loves a good ale and a decent night’s sleep. When she isn’t looking after her ever-growing menagerie of animals and avoiding social interaction as much as politely possible, she is either writing or making something arty or jewellery related, or having a nap.
3.5 stars. The last book ended in an unexpected way, and I had no idea what direction it was going. I like that this book humanized the Dragon Riders a bit and got Nessa interacting with a completely different class of people. There are still a lot of unanswered questions stemming from the first book, but I look forward to the next installment and seeing what answers it brings.
