Rancher Jake Winters is comfortable with his quiet, predictable life. He’s not interested in love, especially if it comes at the expense of his ranch. His life is turned upside down, however, after he rescues a beautiful woman from a car crash.
Fingerprints identify the lone survivor of the wreck and the victim of an abduction as Emily Anderson. The doctor says her memory loss is caused by psychological trauma. She’ll remember when she’s able to accept what happened. If that’s the case, Emily isn’t sure she wants to remember.
Certain Emily’s life is still in danger, Jake is determined to keep her safe. But can he do so while fighting his attraction for her? When Emily’s memory returns, she realizes falling for a man like Jake is a mistake. One she has made before.
Jill Burrell is an author of sweet, small-town romances full of faith, hope, and family.
She has always been an avid reader, and romance has always been her favorite genre. If she’s not writing or folding laundry her head is usually in a book.
When her father told her, “I’ve got a story I want you to write,” she didn’t think she’d ever actually do it. But after twenty years of being a stay-at-home mom with seven children, the idea of writing and publishing a book sounded less terrifying than entering the workforce again. Boy, was she wrong!
Refuge, was a total disappointment to me. This author seems to think she should make these books have as much drama as possible and it's absolutely too freaking much. The heroine has freaking amnesia....lazy lazy writing.
I love romantic suspense novels and this one grabbed my interest on the first page. I was immediately drawn into the mystery of what happened to this girl and how did she end up here. While I figured out who the culprit was early in the story, I still enjoyed watching them come to the same conclusion. I loved the small town and the cast of characters. There is only one problem, I now have to read the rest of the books in the series and my TBR is already too long. 😊
After hearing the crash just outside the front gate of his ranch, Jack found the driver barely alive. On the floor in the back seat, a young woman was crumpled on floor, a gash on her head that was bleeding, while she looked to have a couple broken bones. And oh yes, her hands were tightly bound with duck tape. Her only words to him as he pulled open the back door was, “Don’t let them kill me…stay with me” before she passed out. He told himself , it was her plea for his help that drove to stay with her through the ride in the ambulance to hospital and impatiently walk the waiting area until he could learn if she would make it. The driver didn’t. She had broken ribs, her left arm and leg were broken, a badly beaten face, as well as a concussion but, she would make; it would just take time. As she came to the only person she appeared to recognize was Jake, she couldn’t remember anything else including her own name. Jake put on a good show of how he felt responsible for the woman for several reasons, the accident had happened in front of his ranch, he had been first on the scene, she had begged him for help and he had given his word to help her. Who was he trying to convince that it had nothing to do with the fact that in spite of her injuries she was beautiful? After all he could hardly admit, even to himself, that the minute he saw he felt a connection. Just because the man who had abducted the young woman was dead, didn’t make her safe. Robert, the country sherif and Jake’s brother, would now be launching an investigation. Jake convinces Dr. Young the attending physician, and his uncle, to allow him the take the young woman back to his ranch until they learned her identity, find her family or until she was both out of danger and well on the road to recuperating. Jake and Robert’s mother, Faith had been a nurse and would stay at the ranch as well to her take care of the young woman. It won’t be an easy road back for Emily Anderson even after they identify her. The time she stays at the ranch will strengthen the bond between Jake and Emily, but she is in such an emotional state, she can’t be certain if her feelings for the hard working, compassionate, good looking rancher are real or simply needing someone to lean on. There is murder, mystery, secrets, heartache and hopefully heeling in this romantic suspense. This is the second stand alone tale of a close knit family in a small Washington town, whose ending will bring pain, grief, love and healing. The tale is a clean romantic suspense, mystery that many can enjoy.

It's Jake's turn at a chance of love and oh how it grates him to start to have feelings for Emily and everyone knowing what's going on but not wanting to admit it himself, cause you know he is a ranch owner and has no time for love and all that jazz (insert eye roll). Emily however is justified with her frustrations of not only being injured and fairly immobile while being looked after strangers and not know who she is as well as why she was kidnapped, however once things start slowly coming back you just want to wrap her up in a big hug and make it all go away. Fortunately there are still things to make you smile like Emily getting to know Ben, Amy and their girls along with Jake's Mum Faith along with Lottie and others and then there is Widow Wheeler who's running out of options for husband number three (insert hysterical laugh). So will Jake and Emily make it, well they need to admit their feelings and be honest at what they re going through and alas both are fairly stubborn!

Rancher Jake Winters is comfortable with his quiet, predictable life, although he believes paperwork for keeping the ranch running will be the death of him. There is no time for love since he is so busy. But rescuing a woman from a car crash was not something he could ignore.
They were able to identify the woman through her fingerprints as Emily Anderson, who was also the victim of an abduction. The doctor believes her memory loss is temporary and is caused by the psychological trauma. But Jake is convinced that Emily’s life may still be in danger. Can he keep her safe? Is he falling for her? And will her abductors come at her again?
Grab your copy of this exciting story to see if Emily survives. And as her memories begin to come back, what will she become aware of?
This story, I feel, was even better than the first one. I hope that’s a trend because I want to keep reading the series. (The book is a stand-alone novel, but I can’t wait to check out Robert’s story.) Emily was interesting. I found it both heartbreaking and nerve-racking how she worked her way through grief. Jake was a great hero, too. He behaved like I’d hope a hero would. I also felt like the faith element was handled really well in this story. Overall, I would recommend the book to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance that’s clean, inspirational, and has a healthy dose of suspense.
I could not put this book down. It starts out fast when a vehicle slams into the gate of Jake Winters ranch property. The driver is killed and the only other occupant is a woman who is bound and pleading for her life. When Emily awakes in the hospital she has multiple fractures and amnesia. Jakes family takes her in while his brother investigates her abduction and tries to determine who she is and where she came from. The story has is full of mystery and danger. Will Jake be able to protect Emily from the killers?
Jake hears a car accident and finds the wreckage. Surprise, one of the car accident victims has amnesia. After Emily regains her memory, the way she treats Jake is a bit ridiculous. Basically she believes that Jake only wants her because she was emotionally needy. Parts of the story go to be too religious for my liking.
So much mystery and unknown as this book starts out. I love seeing familiar characters and getting to know them better. Our mind does so much to try and protect us as we see with amnesia coming into play. This book really pulled me in and kept my attention. I read this book and immediately wanted to read the next one.
I really enjoyed the depth of the issues adressed in this book in an easy and readable manner. The characters, as before, are well constructed and presented, so you feel like they are real and you are privy to what they are going through. I like how it ended up after all the heart-ache and trauma. A good series so far.
I loved this book!! The storyline was fascinating! It grabbed my attention from the first page. My heart broke for Emily and all the pain she had to go through. I was so happy to see her realize how much she was loved and how so many people she had taking care of her. I can't wait to read the final book!

I loved the book, no denying. It started super strong, with a hooking storyline. I guess the only thing is it became a bit repetitive but still engaging. I enjoyed it!
I love the story about Jake and Emily, and all they had overcome and their Love Story was so wonderful and beautiful. Very poignant very heartwarming and a great story.
I really enjoyed Jake and Emily's story. Love his compassion, his heart, not to mention his mom's loving caring heart. Emily's strength and resilience shone through in the story. I recommend this book and author
Life has a lot of hard knocks. Unfortunately, I can relate to this poor girl. But, the message of the story comes through loud and clear. It's a message we all need to remember every day.
Caught up in a tangle of the death of her father and brother Emily fights amnesia to learn the truth about all that has dragged her into a web of pain. Can she resolve it with love for a good man?
When they found Emily she was badly injured and had amnesia but knew someone wanted her dead. Could Jake keep het safe until everything became clear and they knew what they were up against?
I just loved this book. It was so well-written that it captured my mind, and I was dragged along for the ride. Once I started reading, I could not put it down until I read the last page.
Brilliant read, couldn't put it down. Love the story line between the characters. Plus a like how it brings the other characters into the story as well.
