Hirohiko Araki ( 荒木飛呂彦) is a Japanese manga artist. He left school before graduation from Miyagi University of Education.
He enjoys the baseball manga Kyojin No Hoshii (Star of the Giants); the video games Mario Kart and Bomberman; and likes Prince and other African-American singers, as well as jazz, rock, and rap.
The pillar men are definitely my favourite Jojo villains thus far (except for maybe Hol Horse, though he only gets introduced in Stardust Crusaders). I would say this is the best volume yet considering we got a unique training sequence with Lisa Lisa, Joseph's developing bromance with Caesar, and a few exciting fights against the pillar men. Hamon is explained much better than it was in part 1, which also makes following the story much easier. The scenes that didn't make it into the anime really cracked me up; Joseph is the comedy king when it comes to the Joestar bloodline!
Still not digging Joseph, and the attitudes towards Nazis and women in this book don't help. 80s manga is weird I guess. Putting those issues aside, this was actually a lot of fun in the back half. The battles are getting wild, with lots of bizarre twists making everything unique. The mythos behind the Pillar Men and masks is becoming more robust, equally matched by the deeper dive into Hamon. Still plenty of great illustrations and wonky anatomically impossible spreads, making this franchise unique and worth reading. Lisa Lisa is a solid, much needed female character, and Esidisi provided a fun challenge for JoJo that was actually pretty compelling to read.
I'm excited to read more, I can see how this series probably gets better. I'm just already over the casual misogyny, so less of that would be good.
Great material, follows the line of the first part of the series and is very worth it. Well finished and excellent internal quality. In this second part called Battle Tendency we accompany Joseph Joestar (JoJo) grandson of the protagonist of the first half. Jojo has just moved to New York City where he finds himself involved with bizarre beings related to his family's past.
The evolution this series has gone in just one arc has been striking. Sure, there was a time jump and there are new characters to reset the slate, but the way in which the overarcing mystery has been detailedly weaved into the setup signals that Hirohiko Araki had more than just a sketch or outline in mind with this series.
This generation's JoJo surely isn't to everyone's liking but with the introduction of Caesar Zeppeli, the bloodline of an ally from the previous arc, there is a "balancing" force to Joseph's chaotic energy - don't get me wrong, Caesar is just as chaotic if not more arrogant, but the mix of their energies really builds into something exciting to watch. These now-equals and the blossoming bromance is definitely what makes this Battle Tendency arc a notch up over Phantom Blood.
And despite the ridiculous OTT posing of Joestar that is now doubled with Zeppeli's presence, I must note how much more intelligent the action and strategies employed we are seeing here is. Definitely makes for some dynamic illustrations!
Nemůžu jinak než dát 5*. Battle Tendency je moje nejoblíbenější část a je moc fajn se vrátit k oblíbeným postavám a Caesarovi. A mimojiné... Aztéčtí bohové fitness jsou fabulous. A Lisa Lisa je badass.
Joesph is truly the most unserious main character, and the Pillar Men are cool villains. Continues to be utterly ridiculous and weird. But in a good way!
WHY didn't they include "The mustard serves no purpose" in the anime? Truly a devastating choice. Like, sure, I love the Pillar Men very much and the fights are cool, but Joseph being an obnoxious weirdo is the real selling point of Battle Tendency
Something that I don't think Jojo gets enough credit for is how it makes mundane or simple things so spectacular. Caesar can't just be a flirtatious prick. He has to slyly deflect Jojo's hamon spaghetti, have his girl attack Jojo with a hamon kiss, and leap into the air from a sitting position. Lisa Lisa can't just introduce herself. She has to walk on a floating oar, then infuse hamon into the water to use that oar as a high bar. Jojo is full of these creative moments that don't serve a greater end. They are just cool, flashy things done for the sake of having cool, flashy things in them. Which makes Jojo a cool, flash series.
And now, this ingenuity carries over into the battles. The more manga I read, the more I realize how it's the little things that separate a good series from a great series. The pillar man could have just beat down the nazis by punching them. Or he could have tapped them all on the head to drain their life. But instead, he phases all their hands together to make one long chain, then sucks the life out of the dude at one end, which goes down the line until they all shrivel up and die. The end result is the same. The pillar guy wakes up and curb stomps a bunch of mooks. It's a pretty typical trope. When you introduce a new big bad guy, he's gotta kills some weaklings to show how big of a deal he is. But it's that dedication to creative moments that turns a standard plot point into a moment I will never forget. We've got a note we want to hit, but how can we make the journey to that predicable point as wild and unpredictable as possible? From the restaurant scene, to Lisa Lisa's introduction, to ACDC's. It's like at every step of the way, Araki asked himself "how can I throw something in to make the predictable moments the most exciting?"
That said, I do have something I want to call out. Although Joesph's bargain with the pillar men was very well executed, I take issue with it. Having the pillar men strike up a deal with a human out of their warrior's pride is a mistake. These guys were 2 steps above humans on the food chain, gods among men. Giving them such a human motivation that can not only be understood, but manipulated feels like a mistake. It was a very well executed moment, but it's one that shouldn't have occurred. And as this part goes on, the pillar men become more and more like strong warrior boys and less like ancient gods.
As I've made it known, I'm not a fan of training sequences. Those were my least favorite parts of Hunter x Hunter. But the one in Battle Tendency was handled pretty well. We get one extended challenge with a very creative gimmick, then a brisk montage. Exactly how it should have been done.
Like the pillar men's shift in character, something else that seems to escalate with time is the believability of Joseph's gambits. At this point, you kind of just have to take his word that he was able to tie such a complicated knot in a way that ACDC couldn't notice. It's still a baller moment when it all comes together. But it does feel kind of contrived in retrospect. It's not a big deal, though. Also, I'm a bit disappointed Joesph's breathing mask didn't amount to anything. It would have been cool if he had a sort of "Rock Lee dropping the weights" moment.
Lastly, I really like the cliffhanger this volume ends on. It's got real horror vibe and is a moment where the pillar men really live up to that untouchable introduction they were given. 10/10 stuff.

So in this volume, the bromance between JoJo and Caesar comes to fruition and we got a strong female character. There are also lots of flashy poses, wedding rings of death, and more characters named after famous musicians/bands. Like “Esidisi”—that’s subtle.
We’re also gifted with Joseph’s fighting style, in which he defeats one person with a pigeon and another with mustard and makes threats like “Should I pinch your nose until you cry?”
Me and Caesar’s reaction to that was the same: What?
Nope, Joseph doesn’t lose his hero status in this volume. He’s a hero who wins by running away: brilliant.
At this point in the series Araki was just getting better with each page. It’s amazing how much this part specifically has grown on me. The storytelling is clear and chock full of energy. It’s great!
Oh BOY am I ever gonna look stupid for constantly ranking Battle Tendency so low out of the parts, since I think every single volume might get 5 stars. But how can I NOT give 5 stars to the pillar men themselves they're simply TOO iconic. They make for really awesome villains too, honestly, aside from all the meme content. They really do feel absolutely terrifying based on their introduction and Santviento was used perfectly to help set that up as well.
On top of that, Joseph hits PEAK shithead in this section of the part, we get LISA LISA and her introduction is badass, we get Joseph and Caesar's amazing enemies to lovers arc, AND it caps off with the Esidisi fight which frankly after a re-read feels almost sort of underrated. There's just too much good content in this volume to deny! The only potential weak spot was that it has the classic training arc trope, but the hell climb was fun and then it just fully time skips after that so honestly it takes up so little actual time that I wasn't even bothered.
Quote of the Volume:
"Ride these bubbles back to the BOONIES, Joestar!"

The moment Jojo and Cesar starter climbing a pillar drenched in extra virgin olive oil (how do I know the oil is extra virgin olive oil? That's Italy. It can ONLY be extra virgin olive oil) I knew this was going to be a 5 stars.
Also: Lisa Lisa? That HAS to be called Lisa Lisa all the time as sure as Sheldon Cooper has to knock three times on any bloody door?
This whole saga is too preposterous for me not to love it. I just have the largest (and dumbest) smile on my face while reading this at all times.
- the portrayal of nazi soldiers as lovable courageous honorable men is.... questionable? - zeppeli's grandson! - oh, love the connection between hamon techniques and the pillar men and stone masks - jojo is hopeless and i was hoping lisa lisa might knock some sense into him, as it seems like he was made to be just the polar opposite of jonathan and it's a bit much - an interesting way to intocude the training arc that any shounen adventure manga needs - i haven't seen a lot of action by lisa lisa which is disappointing. - i'm starting to see the differences between jonathan and joseph, other than their attitudes, which is something!
Araki shouldn't be allowed to be this funny. Caesar is a complete icon and him and Joseph are just... wow.. chef's kiss. I'm lowkey starting to get anxious knowing how this arc ends. Truly obsessed with this volume, though.
I really like part 2 man. It’s just a lot of fun. Joseph and Caesar’s rivalry is fun. Only reason it took me so long to finish this volume is because I got distracted with real life, but if not I could’ve knocked this out so quickly
