Emily thought she could survive the apocalypse and save her sister from hordes of undead. She was wrong. By the time she found her sister, it was too late. All hope was shattered. Heartbroken and disillusioned, Emily returns home. There's just one her haven is no longer empty. Someone has moved in.
Neil was a leader long enough to know when to cut his losses. Surviving in the city was one major loss. He gathered his friends and hoofed it to the forest. He knew there would be abandoned farmhouses and plenty of land. The fewer inhabitants before the apocalypse struck, the fewer zombies to deal with after.
The house they find is incredible. It's isolated, well stocked with food, and Neil even finds a few loaded guns. Soon it becomes obvious that the home isn't as empty as they originally thought, however. When the owner returns, she demands that Neil and his friends move out. She seems to have no problem with the idea of tossing them out on their asses, but there's a major problem.
A storm is coming, and it carries with it a greater threat than just zombies.
L.C. Mortimer was raised on a small farm in Kansas, which sparked her interest in going off the grid. Learning how to can, garden, and become self-reliant were all important parts of her upbringing. After pursuing her degree in English Literature, Mortimer traveled the country with her husband, living in Hawaii, Maryland, and everywhere in between. When she's not busy dreaming up her next story, Mortimer can be found stocking up on canned goods for the zombie apocalypse.
Having read the book –Just Another Day in the Zombie Apocalypse, I was eager to read another book in this genre by this author. One of the main characters is a woman called Emily who had left her cabin in the wilds to search for her sister in the nearby city, after the start of the zombie apocalypse. She managed to get to her, but attempting to leave the city was not a success and she lost her sister and another woman who was with her. She had to make a hard decision when they both got infected and while she doesn’t really want to survive after this, she can’t let herself fall apart.
She needs to get back to her cabin and hope no other survivors or zombies have found it, whilst she has been away. But survivors from a nearby air force base have made it to her cabin before her. Their leader is a man called Neil and he is accompanied by others from the base, who escaped by the skin of their teeth, after people started to fall down and then get up to attack others, trying to eat them alive. Some have lost their children and partners and have vowed never to become one of these creatures. Emily wants them out of her home, but a storm is coming and her cabin is no longer the safest place to be. They need to find somewhere with a basement if they are to survive the night!
Neil had led his small group out of the city, knowing there would be deserted places in the countryside where they could hopefully make a new start. There would still be zombies, but hopefully not in the numbers that they would have to fight in the city. They manage to find a house for the night and then go back to the cabin to find it has been completely destroyed in the tornado that struck. They now have to search for a new home to keep them safe and they find a beauty. They leave the house only when it is essential, to do supply runs and also leave some at the house to keep it safe.
Events occur which will destroy the moral of the small group. They will have to fight other armed groups and lots of zombies, as well as make difficult choices for their own survival. Decisions that will affect their friends and themselves deeply. Life will never be the same, but there is still a small glimmer of hope and that is what they need to rely on. A great additional read in this genre by the author and anyone who loves this type of book, should read this book asap. I loved the characters and the relationships they grow into, but also the hard decisions they have to make. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
My biggest issue with this book is how it ends. Without spoiling it, you're charging through, and it abruptly ends. It's as if you were halfway through a book, and someone just blacked out the last half. I couldn't figure out if this were a cliffhanger leading into a second book. But I only went as far as looking on Amazon and Goodreads. Because I realized I didn't care to read a second one.
Skipping the editing issues, the story moved at a choppy pace. Most of the time, I kept waiting for it to get better because I'm into the trope of 'virus to zombiepocolypse' (this is the whole reason this book is getting two ⭐️).
I should have stopped and added this to DNF when Emily and Neil first met. Emily is hiding outside her house, trying to figure out who the intruders are. Neil sneaks up behind her, holding a gun to her as they talk. When she finally turns around, he kisses her. Maybe it's just me, but if I just had to put a loved one down, I come home to a bunch of assholes (end of the world or not, squatters are squatters), and someone is holding a gun to my back and tries to lip lock me when I turn around I will have a knee-jerk reaction.
Seriously, my first thought is not going to be about putting out to some rando guy.
I know this isn't meant to be a romance novel (at least I hope it isn't), but I added the insta-love tag because of the reaction between Emily and Neil. I think it was meant to be that way, maybe. Not to mention the random few comments and interactions. None of it was steamy.
I kept thinking this story was going to get better. Especially when the zombie cows showed up. Again, the story was choppy. .
It doesn't get better.
I might try one of her other books because she has so many positive reviews. But I'm going down an apocalypse rabbit hole, so it'll be a while.

This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.

Zombies! Need I say more? This is a standalone novel that gives you a bit of everything. There are so many emotions that are part of this journey, and everyone has their own story with their own demons to fight. This story brought a rag tag group of travelers together and they almost made it work. You know that saying “When it rains, it pours”? Well, just when this group seems to catch a break, the sh!! hits the fan. The characters are very relatable. They are regular people like you and me who were trying to figure life out. Then, BAM! They are forced to survive. Each character’s back story will humble you. It’ll really make you wonder what would really happen and how would you handle it. Each had their vices and crazy as it may seem, they even had some happy times during the Z apocalypse. This story will make you laugh, will give you the warm and fuzzies, and some of it can be a bit gory. Best of all, you will NOT see what is coming and are definitely not ready for the end. I swear that when I finished this book, I had one of these moments that just made me sit there, like wow, that happened. I had a book hangover! I am still going over this in my head going, how could that have happened? Seriously, you need to read this! I received this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The author has done a wonderful job not only describing the scene but also the people who become part of the undead and those who survive it. The dialogue and the emotions of the survivors are superbly described. I enjoyed reading this book, but I am not a fan of the ending of the book as it leaves questions unanswered.

I only gave this two stars because this book is a good zombie book but felt like it left out a lot of what happened before this group of survivors met. Is there a before book that explains the characters beginning? You get the jest of what’s happening but would have really liked the backgrounds of these people. All in all it was a good read but just felt like there could have been a couple more books to help us to understand the characters.
Enjoyed the storyline of Emily meeting the Group of Airmen at her house. She had been alone and now found a group of people to survive the apocalypse with. The book is full of zombie action, even zombie cattle. I am hoping there will be a second book since the ending was sad and left the reader wondering what will happen next. Definitely recommend this book.
It was kind of good. The writing style was smooth but the story was kind of pointless. It was time spent reading but I kept waiting for it to get better. Then it ended.
Definitely looking forward to the next story this was so good I gave you a whole different outlook of the zombie world if you made it to my review just get the book you won’t be disappointed onto the next book for me..
WHAT? I mean, SERIOUSLY, what was that? It seemed like it was going to end up being fairly good. Then, WHAT? It's not a book one. Nothing is mentioned about a sequel. Why would you do that?
Good stand alone book. Quick and easy read with a very surprising ending. I had to reread the last chapter thinking I missed something. It was an abrupt ending, but it works.
Chapter 7 it calls a character a spook. What for? Why the blatant racism in a zombie book? Before I got to this point I was struggling for it to get interesting and then we got to that point and I stopped reading immediately.
I liked this one but the ending is kinda' confusing; does the heroine die or did she shoot someone else with the second bullet or is there a second book coming 🤔?!? Tags: dystopian-post-apocalyptic, read, small-town, zombie-scifi-survival
I am Into books on zombies. Easy read and looking forward to part 2. Book 1 ended with a little excitement. Ever heard of zombie cows? Will end review right there.
Loved how they all band together with trauma slowly coming to the surface. The cows were a favorite part, along with the knowledge of the general area being so simple, wish more places did that. Although the loss throughout made me sad, even though it is common in an apocalypse. Cannot wait to read the next book!
