No matter how hot Phoenix got, Nick Hopper could not leave the Valley of the Sun—not while questions of his estranged father’s murder remained unanswered. The case stalled, he could have minded his business when the woman ran terrified from the giant of a man in the diner parking lot. But protecting people like her was his business. At least it was until he got himself hurt, stranded, and out of options.
Alicia Towers had not left her house alone in four years. Members of Life Song Community Church looked after her; accompanied her on errands, or visited to sing hymns, if only from the other side of her bedroom window. So what made her leave home in the middle of the night? And where did she go?
When Nick discovers a connection from Alicia to his father, secrets unfold that will challenge his understanding of who his father really was. And it will have deadly consequences.
This mystery was fresh and constantly kept me guessing. The characters were well rounded and helped move the story along. As someone who lives in the Valley it was cool to read about places in my backyard and could empathize with Nick sweating through his suit! The chapter titles were added and have very catchy names which helped organize the book. There were some noticeable errors in the book that messed with the flow, but did not hinder the understanding of the story. All in all, a fantastic story for mystery readers who need a new story!
I thoroughly enjoyed The Devil Made Me! Nick, the protagonist, grapples with solving a mystery originating from the church his father took charge of before his death. As Nick comes closer and closer to the answer, he finds a variety of surprises that will keep you guessing along the way!
