Miko’s new classmonster is very interested in her, but looks like a classmate to everybody else. That obsession is the least of her problems, however, when a near miss via a Truck-kun appearance lands her in hospital. And there definitely aren’t lots of spirits in a place like that…

Sometimes a volume of Mieruko-chan is great at just bringing a stellar creepy atmosphere and wildly inventive drawings, which is basically all it needs. That the story has some solid narrative threads is a welcome bonus.

This ongoing plot concerning Michiru is an interesting one because it looks obvious on face value, but we are given hints (via a welcome return for one character, who also gets the best jokes this volume) that the obvious might not be quite the truth it seems.

And Michiru excels at being creepy. She adeptly straddles the line of being too much, but in a friendly way. Miko’s ability also leads to a classic trope involving her “friend” becoming both funny and really disturbing towards the stopping point for this volume.

And I do like the way this twists yet again at the very end, implying that not all the monsters in this world are the obvious ones. There’s a hint that behind the smile of the character who shows up here is something just as unpleasant as what Miko sees from the other characters world.

But the real meat of this volume is poor Miko being stuck in hospital, through no fault of her own, and absolutely tormented by the things she’s seeing. Again, the visual imagination on the page here is something else - it’s worth reading simply to see what’s coming next.

If there’s one low point to this story, it’s definitely the comrade-in-arms that Miko meets while she’s recuperating. Not because I dislike where it goes - the visual at the end of that story is both funny and wild at the same time - but because it’s surprisingly predictable for the series (especially after the first volume).

Still, this is vintage Mieruko-chan through and through. Horrific visuals and a poor protagonist doing her best to cope with it. I definitely don’t love the Michiru storyline as much as the shrine one, but it’s still pretty good.

4 stars - it’s more of the same, but in the good way that you want something to be more of the same. Spooky and satisfying.

Before she can find out why the new transfer student at her school has tentacles, Mieruko-chan ends up in the hospital with a head injury from an accident. Besides being full of monsters and genuinely terrifying, the hospital provides one of the heartwarming little side stories the series likes to offer up as a special treat once in a while as Mieruko-chan comes across another girl who can see the monsters also.

This is a solid series that consistently entertains me and regularly surprises me.

3.5 Stars. Way too short...
Most of this Volume deals with Miko continuing to try to figure out Chiruru. In an effort to escape the tentacles of the monster on Chiruru's head, Miko accidently steps out in front of a car and hits her head as she is rescued by the monster. Ending up in a hospital for observation, she must not only deal with monsters she sees, but also spirits of humans who haven't moved on yet. Once out of the hospital, and seeing the reaction of the monster, is Chiruru's problem actually her older sister?

I'm still enjoying this manga, but wish we went back to training again. Or maybe a "world ending" event?
Recommend.

A very strong volume for the series.

Our poor Mieruko slams her head and has to go to the hospital. Well, seeing the dead is already scary. Seeing the dead walk around in a hospital? Horrifying. Some nasty ass ghost in this one really showcase the art. I also thought there's a very touching story that harkens back to the amazing ending of volume 1. Some great stuff was on display here. I also really enjoyed the ending, as it's building up this new character to be a mysterious and maybe a threat.

A whole new meaning to being visually impaired

It's absolutely wild how hard it is for Miko to see things because she sees things. The new transfer student while being creepy and concerning, seems to actually be okay? But there's a scene in the donut shop where this character comes in and due to Miko's sight she can't really see this person properly. There's a thing with a donut that happens, being vague to avoid too much spoiler, that just cracked me up and had me laughing until I cried. It was just too funny, and it almost had an innocence and sweetness to it that just made me forget for a moment that this is a horror series. It just was too funny, and tickled me!

Overall the series continues to be completely binge-worthy.

Some exploration of storylines from earlier volumes here (including Michiru somehow being even creepier than she already was), but this volume is mainly a self-contained “side story” about Miko being stuck in a spooky hospital for a few days and the horrors she encounters there. As a well-told story and a fun diversion, it fits very well in the ongoing storyline - but I’m still looking forward to learning more about what’s going on in the current main story arc (in the next volume, presumably).

The next volume and not just are we getting Cthulhu-chan (sorry, I am calling her that) doing all her creepy things like stalking and breaking and entering and the likes, we also get a couple of days at the hospital as Miko has hit her head when she tried to flee from Cthulhu-chan. And what happens in the hospital was FREAKING scary, but at same time sad as well. I am glad that Miko was able to meet with Romm and ask for some help! I do hope that we get some more clarity on yandere Cthulhu-chan because I am so curious if she really has a monster on her or if she is a monster. Given her behaviour... I am questioning things.

OML I mean the first scene?! Interesting

I LOVED the hospital scenes especial the conclusion of it with the little girl. This manga is just so interesting and really keeps you in. One volume there are 3 new plot points added and the next theres 6, and it feels like a lot, but also not. Very comprehendable and fun though there is a lot going on, it is not too much. I love the balance and (once again) the art.

The development of the model-student-monster character (i forget her name) Is so...odd, I honestly don't know what to think, ESPECIALLY after this ep.

The eighth volume of Mieruko-chan focuses on Michiru and her… otherworldly obsession with Miko. The hospital section didn’t really lend too much to the story other than Michiru possibly stalking (well, not possibly, she IS stalking) Miko. The Rom interaction was interesting but didn’t really seem to lead anywhere either. Hopefully, we’ll get some more on Michiru in the next volume but for now, let’s sit back and enjoy a donut tower platter.

Miko's ability to see spirits has officially landed her in the hospital (where tons of spirits exist) so this one feels more like the setting of a haunted house. But I'm liking the nuance that gets added into this one, because Rom puts up a very good point that Miko's sight is so strong, she can't see past spirits. Meaning that she might be misinterpreting her view of Michiru... or is she?

Oh man, oh man. This was the one! I loved this from beginning to end. The creepy vibes were there during Miko’s hospital stay. I cried and cried during the halfway point of this over the plot twist that happens in the hospital. And that ending left me wanting to know more about this new girl. It was a great time all around. My favorite volume so far.

Mieruko almost gets hit by a truck and ends up in the hospital where many creepy ghosts are walking the halls.

This is a nice little stand-alone story that shows that just because something looks bad, it doesn't mean it is (and vice versa). While Mieruko does a good job of not showing ghosts she can see them, I would have been screaming several times if I saw these creations in real life.

Every “horror-ish” series has all sorts of different monsters. AoT has Titans, Chainsaw Man has Devils and so on.

But what I really needed was a refreshing take on ghosts, they’re the best.

Also I’m so sorry Miko, but I ship it.
