The curse with short stories is that the readers aren’t given enough time and complexity to completely fall for the plot and characters. So far I had not read one short story where this isn’t true and Elemental Angel was no exception sadly.

The premise was interesting as well as the Elemental aspect of the story. However because of how short it was the necessary details and information was missing. I for one never fully understood what an Elemental was or what Time and Earth were in part of that. Were they gods? Or some sort of higher power? Although if I’m not mistaken I believe this is a part of a series so perhaps it is better explained in said series. What really hurt the story for me however was the lacking characterization of both Ryan and Mindy, but also the barely there family members. While it is understandable that it is difficult to find that room in such a short story it is still not excusable to miss out on. The whole reason for a story is after all for it to be an enjoyable read and it won’t be if you can’t relate or find any interest in the main characters or what they are going through.

That’s absolutely not to say that the story wasn’t enjoyable. I liked it and I found it cute, if not a bit sad. It just didn’t speak to me much and I couldn’t really find anything in it to make me love it. However props for the originality of the plot and Elemental aspect as well for a very unpredictable ending. That was not the way I thought at all it was going to end. I have yet to decide if I liked how it ended or not, but I do appreciate the author for not following the stream.
