The Revolutionary Legacy of Rosa Luxemburg

Rate this book
There have been many biographies of Rosa Luxemburg, but none have done justice to her as a revolutionary. In the present, much-needed work, the real Luxemburg is brought to the fore.
This great revolutionary has often been misrepresented. Sometimes she is presented as an opponent of the October Revolution and an advocate for a 'softer', 'anti-authoritarian' Marxism as against that of Lenin and the Bolsheviks. At other times, she is presented as 'bloody Rosa', the violent revolutionary.
Citing extensively from Luxemburg's own writings, this book reveals the true content of her political thought, and how it developed as the international class struggle unfolded. A class-conscious revolutionary and staunch defender of revolutionary Marxism, Luxemburg waged a battle against revisionism, opportunism, class-collaboration, national chauvinism and pacifism, always on the side of the socialist revolution.
In this book, Marie Frederiksen sets the record straight, examining Luxemburg's ideas on the basis of what she actually wrote and examining her actions in their real context. This book reclaims Luxemburg as the revolutionary she was.

This is an excellent book reclaiming the revolutionary legacy of Rosa Luxemburg. It is well laid out, argued clearly and carefully, and lacks any of that kind of academic waffle that often makes these kinds of books so uncomfortable to read. There is a fair bit of historical context given which might already be familiar to some, but is indispensable for those new to the topic. This context and the long quotes give the reader ample opportunity to make up their own mind.

Frederiksen manages to capition the life and ideas of the great revolutionary Luxemburg in a compelling and easy to understand way. She proves Luxemburgs revolutionary outlook was motivated her throughout her entire life and dispels any and all misrepresentations of Luxemburg as a "softer" more democratic Communist than Lenin and the Bolsheviks were, for they based themselves on the same principles of genuine marxism and workers democracy.

A well-written, accessible and informative look at the life and ideas of the great revolutionary hero Rosa Luxemburg. I really enjoyed how this book places her ideas in their historical context, providing an excellent history of the SPD in Germany as it does so. This book has a very balanced approach to looking at Rosa Luxemburg's ideas and is not afraid to discuss where she did differ in her views to Lenin or other Bolsheviks. I felt that I learned so much from reading the polemics which are included and I have gained a new understanding of the key issues and questions which gripped the international at the time. This book is clearly very well-researched and easily refutes the lies and distortions of Rosa Luxemburgs' work which have emerged from Stalinists on the one hand, and counter-revolutionary trends on the other. This book is essential reading for every Marxist.

Very in-depth analysis of Luxemburg’s critiques and insights on the Russian revolution, Marxism and communism in general. I wish I read this biography before I had read luxemburgs “reform or revolution” last year since I found that I was missing a lot of context to understand what she was arguing for and against but this book dives into and exposes the historical lore behind most if not all of her works. There’s a lot of lengthy quotes from various sources in this book which I appreciate as I didn’t have to rely on the author’s interpretation of other people’s works.

I loved reading it! It‘s both about politics and history, explaining wayyyy more than it has to (in a positive way!). It‘s really not just about Rosa, it‘s about the time she lived in, explaining in a unique way her life and writings.
It was one of my first political books and really got me the farthest!
It‘s sadly quite difficult to read, so I‘d recommend really really good English knowledge (I still tackled the challenge and learned lots of new words!)

Livre qui replace la théorie développée par Luxemburg dans son contexte historique pour mieux briser le cou aux récupérations et mensonges qui entourent son héritage politique et son combat pour la révolution socialiste.
