‘Black Ice’ takes you on a journey of twisted betrayal, icy revenge, enigmatic curves, and piping hot passion, and leaves you panting for more.
Tiana Laveen was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. She moved away, and now lives inside of her mind, but her heart is occupied with her husband, two children, and twisted imagination. She enjoys a fulfilling and enriching life that includes writing books, public speaking, drawing, painting, listening to music, cooking, and spending time with loved ones.
Tiana Laveen is a uniquely creative and innovative author whose romance fiction is geared towards those who not only want to temporarily escape from the daily routines of life, but also became pleasantly caught up in the twisted, well developed journeys of her unique characters. Tiana creates a painting with words as she guides her reader into the lives of each and every main character. Her dedication to detail and staying true to her characters is evident in each novel that she writes.
My first Tiana Laveen novel in a very long time and I have to say I really enjoyed this. While she's still queen of the metaphor and definitely loves a LOT of descriptions it works for her and honestly doesn't feel like just a bunch of wasted words. I especially loved how she captured the beauty and the brutality of the Alaskan wilderness. I could really feel the chill and smell the crisp, pine scented air.
I have to say Jack was a really nice surprise hero. He wasn't an alpha-hole (I HATE those). He was alpha in all the best ways possible without feeling the need to diminish the women around him or for that matter, any woman. I loved his dedication to finding the murderer of his son, his passion for the wild and his respect for the Indigenous Alaskans. His large frame just needed the right woman for his large heart.
Kim was that woman. She was no shrinking violet when it came to the wild mountain man. I appreciated that she met him on his own terms without losing her autonomy. She has her own secrets and burdens to bear, and the two of them were able to heal one another. Better still, there was no lack of communication between them, but neither wasted words when they needed to express their thoughts.
Big mountain man does pedicures. Book boyfriend material for sure!
Yes, the sex scenes were hot as expected, but the true telling is how well this story would have been had it been more fade to black. The smexy times were just extra whipped cream on the sundae.
I'm really happy that the subject of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women was a theme in the book. Black and Native women both share in the criminal lack of concern when it comes to our women and girls being taken and/or killed.
For a long time I shied away from the author's books due to rabid supporters flooding my Goodreads review with their annoying hot takes. That happened with Laveen's first book and that pretty much put me off reading anything else, which I admit wasn't fair to her. While I never blamed the author, I also just didn't want to deal with anymore insane fangirls who don't understand that reading IS subjective. Unfortunately for me, I've probably missed out on some great stories too. If they're of the same caliber as Black Ice, I'm looking forward to checking them out.
Black Ice is Outstanding, Intriguing and emotional!😍😍😍😍
Black Ice by Tina Laveen is a riveting tale of two people mourning for a loss of a love one. Two complete strangers are drawn together to help each deal with the loss. From first sight Jack and Kim felt that pull of attraction. And it was powerful! Jack is mourning the loss of his son, Chad and Kim is mourning loss of her dad and biological mom. Jack is a Park Ranger, Tracker and a hunter. He wants answers and nobody's talking. Not the police or residents. Jack and Kim are running into roadblocks and coverups. Jack made a promise to his son and deceased ex wife to find Chad's killer. There is also a wolf, named Diesel who is Jack's protector and vice versa.. The chemistry between Jack and Kim is explosive!! This story has supernatural elements involving, Diesel, and Chad's presence. There won't be peace for anyone, until the killer is found. I was on complete lockdown while I read this story. Thank Tiana Laveen.
Kimberly Milton was running from the facts surrounding her adoption by her parents. She had to start over where her mother could not find her. The situation had thoroughly messed up her Broadway career. Jack Currant would not rest until the murderer of his son was found. He was completely out of control and had alienated everyone in town, especially that inept police department. When the two met in the restaurant where Kim worked, it was an instant attraction. They became friends and talked about everything, no subject was off-limits once they figured out that they could trust each other.
Jack could feel the presence of his deceased son everywhere. The spirituality of it all was not what he was used to. It was not until his native friend Askuwheteau told him about the wolf that suddenly can into his life sent by his son to guide him. He believed that his son sent Kim into his life too so his father would not be alone.
As long as Kim and Jack were together, they could handle the black ice of life that was thrown at them. They were each other's healing balm. Kim finally got the courage to hash out her feelings with her mother and Jack can now go on with his life with justice served with his best friend, confident, and love of his life, Kim.
I loved this story. Tiana never fails at writing great stories. My only problem is that I wish she would have created a link to a Spotify playlist so we could enjoy the music setting the scenes.
FAVORITE QUOTE Jack whispering in Kim's ear at their wedding. “I love you, not just for who you are, but for who I’ve become because of you…”
Laveen, Tiana. Black Ice (p. 358). Tiana Laveen. Kindle Edition.
FAVORITE PASSAGE “Chad, this is the last cigarette. I’m saying goodbye to you. I hope you know I’ll always be your father. I’ll never say I have one child. I’ll always say I have two sons. I can finally move on. I got justice for you, boy, and I thank you for being in my life. I thank God for trusting me to bring you up, and help you become a man.” He wiped a tear away. “I know you were here, Chad, with me, every step of the way since the moment you passed away. You didn’t stay for you, you stayed for me. You couldn’t move on because I couldn’t move on. We worked together, didn’t we? A team. We got it done. I know you brought Diesel to help me and keep me company. In your own way, you brought Kim to me, too…

This is the second book I’m reading by this author and I love how music is part of her stories. I find myself playing the songs mentioned as I read the book
I look forward to reading Tiana's books but I just couldn't get into this one and a big part of that was because of Kim's character. She was very immature for a 38 year old, yes it's hard to hear the truth sometimes but that doesn't mean you have to shoot the messenger and be a brat. There were so many things about her that annoyed me from driving up to the mountains for the first time unprepared, wanting Jack to share more than what she wanted to give after getting stuck up there, the whole runaway situation with her mother..I just couldn't with her. If it wasn't for Jack and his story I would've gotten a refund..sorry 😔
If you like, romance, suspense, mystery, and paranormal this book is all that and more! I love all of Tiana's book but this is my favorite! The character's are amazing Jack and Kim are both survivors who have been through some very difficult things but are finding their way and against all odds have found their way to each other. The mystery will keep you turning the page and the ending will leave you with your mouth hanging open! All I can say is that Tiana did her thing with this one! Oh and the sex is 🔥. Don't sleep on this book!!
OMG! This is such a beautiful story about Jack and Kim that it touches your heart. It has love, growth, and mystery. I’m not able to adequately put together the right words to express just how Tiana captures the reader’s attention so that you have to continue reading til the end. I love the mystery and how the characters were refreshing so the you got everyone’s point of view . This story is so worth it. Take the chance you won’t regret it.
When I tell you I enjoyed this book to the fullest, that’s exactly what I mean. I told Mrs. Tiana she put her whole foot into this book. Not many books where I like the “h” and I enjoyed Kim from cover to cover. My heart broke for Jack and his son. Although he spoke of other family members, I still felt that he was lonely.
SN: Walt and his wife reminded me of my parents. Hit real close to home lol.
I finished this book in 24 hours. It was that good. Read this book!!!
Ms. Laveen never disappoints. The storyline and the characters immediately captivated me. The story pulled on both my heart strings and sense of mystery. Well written and executed. A good and entertaining read.
First of all, this review will contain only mild spoilers but I put it under a spoiler tag nevertheless. This is Kimberly’s (38) and Jack’s (44) story (kudos to Mrs Laveen for a couple in this age gap 👏🏽). Kim fled NYC after a family tragedy and following scandal which left her deeply wounded and her career as a Broadway performer in tatters. Jack is a born and bred Alaskan, a Park Ranger, who suffered an unimaginable loss after the murder of his only child, his 21 year old son Chad. A murder, who is still unsolved after a few years and a shameful half-hearted unprofessional investigation by the local police. He tried to investigate himself and by doing so shook up the status quo in his small community and made him the crazy volatile town grump/loner. They meet at the local diner and after him saving her from a heinous attack develop a connection which evolves to a deep love affair.
I am a long time fan of Tiana Laveen but I have to admit I was a bit sceptical at first. Romance mixed with crime and a hint of the paranormal is something I‘m hesitant about. Often the romance falls short or vice versa but in „Black Ice“ you’ll find a perfect mixture of both. I also loved how the author showed the emotional toll and baggage the H and h carried around and how their trauma affected their mental health and personal life afterwards. And a big shoutout to Mrs Laveen to shining a light on the disappearance and murder of indigenous women. You see she packed A LOT in this book but don’t worry, it’s all perfectly balanced and works out just fine. If I had to criticise anything it would be that the evolvement of their love affair was quite fast after both claimed not to be in the right headspace for love/ a relationship in the beginning (but secretly I loved it 😉).
Trigger warnings/safety: The book deals with heavy topics such as violent death of a child, loss of a parent, depression/PTSD, drug abuse, alcoholism, (attempted) rape, disappearance/murder of indigenous women, racism No OW/OM drama. Both are experienced in the bedroom, H was married which ended in an amicable divorce (ex-wife is deceased).
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book is awful! Poor grammar, wrong and questionable word usage, and a black female lead character that was out of touch and unbelievable. Kim's storyline is that she is upset that she was "illegally" adopted (her adoptive white parents paid her black birth mom for her outside of the adoption system). The birth mom was a drug addict and Kim was born addicted to 3 different drugs and wasn't expected to live. Kim's adoptive parents got the infant Kim needed medical care and later mental health and other support, a good education, exposure to social and cultural opportunities. Because of these parents Kim had access to resouces, was loved, and had a successful career with friends. Her parents truly loved their daughter. Yet, Kim was whining about how wrong of them to have adopted her as they did, how they shouldn't have kept this from her, and how they used their white privilege to take advantage of a poor black drug addict mom. Oh please give me a break!!! She referenced checking her investment and bank accounts a few times in the book so it is clear that she wasn't rushing to give back the advantages she had based on the life provided by her adoptive parents. This included the ability to run off to Alaska to get away from the public scrutiny of the facts surrounding her adoption. Kim is near 40 years old and is written as if she is much much younger, and very immature. Dare I say idiotic!?
Jack was by far the better and more interesting character. He was a father seeking justice for his murdered son in an Alaskan town that had turned against him because he was ruffling feathers. He is brash and outspoken, grounded, mature, and the complete opposite of Kim.
The pacing and telling of the story of Kim and Jack, her love interest, was so slow. Unnecessary and unhelpful details abound in this book. This book needed proofreading and editing. The insertion of music titles to help set he mood, though once fashionable in romance novels, is over done and annoying here. It screams, "Look at me, I know a lot about music" or just enough to throw around titles randomly.
I always enjoy the many feelings each character evokes while reading Ms. Laveen’s book. Jack and Kim are lovers who together melt the ice that had formed around their hearts❤️.
The tragedy Jack went through with his family is heartbreaking💔. It was infuriating and disappointing that the towns people and authorities saw him as a nuisance when all he wanted was justice for his son, something any parent would want😖. For Kim, I did feel bad, and I understood how the deception caused hurt however, she should have been more mature and had spoken to her mother instead of running away. The action she took was immature but, did redeemed herself when she got much needed help for Jack👍🏽. The chemistry between them were instantaneous from their first meeting and steadily heated up😘😍🔥. I really enjoyed all the spiritual knowledge Askuwheteau imparted on Jack in all aspects of this life with Kim, the loss of his family and his future and even Diesel🐺. I teared up so much at the end when I saw the words ALWAYS🥲🥰.
This was a touching story that had me feeling many emotions. I always learn something when I read her books and in this one it was of the horrific truth of missing indigenous women🙂. I truly enjoyed it and recommend it.
I must be the minority because I did not enjoy this book. I finished it only because I paid for it. I found the constant reference to contemporary music very annoying and unnecessary to setting a mood in the story.
There was too much going on in this story between the unresolved issue with Jack’s loss and the “trauma” (really) in Kim’s past. I found some of the discussions and interactions between the characters excessive when trying to explain their behavior and overall I began to lose interest. I didn’t sense a chemistry between Jack and Kim at all, just two people who came together.
The reveal of the killer was wrapped up quickly near the end and I still fail to see how all the clues lead to the result. The ending was equally trite but finally, the book was over. Thank goodness.
All books are not enjoyable for all readers and this one was not good for me.
This book was a gentle surprise when compared to the other books that I have read and enjoyed by Tiana. Jack and Kim were two people who were so far apart in life experiences that their meeting, while confrontational, couldn't have happened any other way. Jack had experienced great loss in his life, and some of it was current. He was angry with the world and kept everyone in fear of approaching him. Kim, after experiencing the death of her father, followed by her world crashing down around her when family secrets were exposed, along with her mother's betrayal. Jack gets lost in the natural wonder of Alaska, where Kim comes to hide from her past. In its cold environment, they each face betrayal and the need for revenge and find forgiveness and love. A great story very easy to read.
Black ice is 1 of those books that seems simplistic and it's Story but delivers a magnificent punch of brilliance by moving 2 characters and terminal 2 a place Rizzoli and isles and under standing. I've driven on black eyes and never saw it coming. That's the story of black ice. What is important about this book is that It is more than a love story. Just like horror stories are supposed to be a comment on a society, this romance is a comment on the way love is expected to happen and doesn't...because Good things happen To Correct The damage caused by evil. Take this ride , and you will enjoy it
I mean that in a good way. Two people broken from trauma find peace, love, and closure. Kim was running away from the trainwreck that had become her life after a tragic passing of a beloved parent. Deception is uncovered and puts Kim in the wind. Jack tries to get a resolution regarding the murder of his only child, Chad. He has been coming up empty, and those whom he has helped have either turned their backs on him and he been met with roadblocks at every turn.
I'm a Tiana Laveen fan so I love her books. I love that with each of her books, you can settle in and be taken on a journey where you feel everything. This one, I was waiting for and again I fell in love with the people and the story. Jack and Kim .... the pain, the feelings, the passion, just a must read. I don't like spoilers so will just say I laughed, cried, got hot and bothered during the loving scenes and I felt there journey of love. Read it and like me, you won't be disappointed!
I really enjoyed this book. I loved everything about it. It gave me all the feels. Sadness, anger, laughter, regret, rejection, pain, fear...it's in this story.
The book calls out injustices and makes you hopeful. I loved Jack and his tenacity, Kim her vulnerabilities, Diesel for his willingness to protect. The book kept me on the edge of my seat trying to find they murderer(s). Her mothers ex thus and was a great character I loved him after the wife got out the way. LOL
I can't say enough about how I enjoyed this story. This one I'll read again and again.
Tiana Laveen did a wonderful job, with this book. The characters of Jackson Currant and Kim Milton, chemistry was off the charts. They both suffered heartache, to find love in each other. Diesel was such a lovable sweetheart. I like that Tiana touched on issues, such as Trans adoption, missing Indigenous women and how the situation with Jack’s son was handled poorly. I truly enjoyed the book and is looking forward to her next one.
From the first chapter to the last I was hung up on every word. Ms. Laveen has such an incredible skill to bring unlikely characters and shape them into people you can relate to! She makes unlikely partners word perfect! I loved Kim’s heart and Jack’s dedication to his son. I enjoyed how they were so easy with one another! And the love happening so unexpectedly, was just beautiful!
I am a true fan of your books. However, the last 2 or 3 books you wrote I thought were good but they had a sameness to them. This story was really refreshing and heartfelt you included the national missing crisis of women of color the pain of death of a family member. You really are a wordsmith. You took the reader on a journey to a happy ever after with some twists and turns thrown in It really was a good read. Bravo!!!!!
I enjoyed this story with Jack and Kim. Although I didn't understand Kim's situation which was basically running from real life issues that she could have handled differently with her adoptive mother. On the other hand I could understand everything Jack was dealing with and not getting the help from the police department. Overall I thought this was a well written story and I enjoyed the characters. Look forward to reading other work by this author.
As always, another excellent TL novel. I loved the story of Jack and Kim. I loved how two hurt souls healed each other. Each was suffering in his or her own way and each one was ready for something but was unaware of what that "something" was or should be. I loved how this story was about learning to live, learning to love and learning to trust again. This was a really good read and I highly recommend it.
Wonderful story of grief, love, and endurance. Jack and Kim met while they were both going through rough patches in their lives. Jack was fighting for justice in the murder of his son, while Kim was running from the truth surrounding her adoption. The two fell hard for each other while navigating the turmoil life threw at them.
This story was exquisitely written. Poetic and heart-felt. A definite page-turner.
Kim has run away to Alaska for a new start and Jack is repeatedly reliving his worse nightmare, the death of his only child daily. These two form an alliance of sorts and start dating. Kim is holding on to a secret yet she expects trust and honesty from Jack at all times. Is there a future for these two? they make a most unlikely couple. With danger lurking in the shadows they both better watch out!
Wow!!! This was such a beautiful story of love after experiencing loss and grief!! I wasn't sure how the author was going to flush out all those strong elements while keeping the emotion believable but my expectations were far exceeded!!! The H is such a strong sexy alpha-male and creates a beautiful safe space to allow the h to rest in her feminity while trusting their love journey ❤️❤️. This is a WM BW interracial romance. I am Definitely looking forward to reading more of her books.
I really liked that the story was about older people, but at times the story was slow moving and I found myself skipping entire pages to get to the dialogue. Concept gets a thumbs up, but it was not executed well. Although i liked Jack's character, Kim was corny and annoying at times. All in all I give it 2.5 stars. Still love the author, this was just not my favorite of hers.
