Ex-SEAL, then mercenary, Drake Morgan, is tired of war. He’s ready to make a life for himself building rather than killing. Hired as a carpenter by an old Navy buddy, he’s focused on rebuilding the Lucky Lady Lodge in Montana. When he discovers bones in one of the walls, his work site becomes a crime scene.

When the call comes to investigate a potential murder at a local lodge, she is determined to solve the case, no matter how old.
Drake teams with Cassie to find the killer. In their search, they discover clues leading to the answers and an attraction for each other neither anticipated. As they close in on the truth, the danger escalates. They must find the killer before he strikes again. Especially if the next targets are them.

Drake is by Ella James. It is a Brotherhood Protectors book. Drake has come to Eagle Rock, Montana to work at the Lucky Lady Lodge. Hank Patterson had given the former Navy SEAL a construction job when Drake refused to join the Brotherhood Protectors. However, Hank hasn’t given up yet. The Lucky Lady Lodge had definitely seen better days; but the owners were renovating the old lodge and when possible, were using veterans to do the work. So, luckily, Drake knew several of the men already. They were in the demolition process and Drake went right to work. In the process of clearing out the assigned room, he ran across a concealed room with a skeleton in it. What happened here and who were this woman? Deputy Cassie Douglas was called and she headed to the Lodge. She thought of the man she had pulled over that morning and wondered if she would see him again. She also wondered if the body was that of her friend, Penny, who had disappeared 13 months ago. However, as soon as she saw the remains, she knew it wasn’t Penny? How will Drake end up helping Cassie? Is this old case somehow tied to Penny’s case?
Drake is trying to adjust to life after serving his country and although he is uncertain about what he wants in his future he knows what he doesn’t want which is becoming part of the Brotherhood Protectors team. He accepts a job renovating a lodge only to find an unwelcome surprise in the walls which brings Cassie into his life.
Cassie is the police officer who is tasked with investigating Drake’s discovery. After their previous altercation they began as adversaries but as they find themselves looking for answers they prove that they make the perfect team in all aspects of their lives.
Intrigue, action and some surprising twists as Drake and Cassie find the truth and so much more.
Drake is another action packed, suspense, romance story by Elle James. I really like the two wonderful main characters. Drake is an ex SEAL and is tired of war, and has been bouncing around his home state of Texas with low paying no-brainer jobs, until Hank Patterson tracks him down and offers him a choice of two jobs, both working with former teammates. One helping reconstruct the Lucky Lady Lodge and the other as part of his Brotherhood Protectors. He prefers manual labor. Coming into town he meets deputy Cassie Douglas, who stops him for speeding, but he is fast enough to invite her for coffee. A mystery soon shows itself, while Drake is demoing a room and finds the skeleton of a woman who had been sealed up inside a hidden room behind it. Soon the two of them are working together on finding out the identity of the woman and exploring the chemistry between them.
I read an ARC that I received as part of the author's review crew. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.
OMG, you need this book! Drake is a fabulous romantic suspense by Elle James. Ms. James once more captures your attention and holds it hostage until the end. Drake left the SEALs and the Navy and is looking for the place he belongs. He meets Cassie when she pulls him over for speeding. Cassie and Drake's story is packed with cover to cover drama, humor, sizzle, action and suspense. Drake is book 6 of the Iron Horse Legacy Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliffhanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from Bookfunnel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Drake is book 6 in the Iron Horse Legacy series by Elle James and glad to be back in Eagle Rock.
Former Navy Seal and mercenary Drake Morgan is recruited for the Brotherhood Protectors but he turns him down so Hank offers him a job using his carpenter skills to help restore the Lucky Lady. On the way he is stopped for speeding by Deputy Cassie Douglas and what happens next will keep you up way past your bedtime..lol.
Suspense, danger, action, mystery and so much more…can’t wait for the next book in this series!!
This story belongs to former Navy SEAL, and later mercenary, Drake Morgan. A man that after 14 years in the military, integrating himself back to civilian life has been very hard. Since he wants to stay away from violence, he has no desire to take up the offer of becoming a member of Hank Patterson’s Brotherhood Protectors. But when Hank offers him a chance to use his carpentry skills, he packs his few possessions and drives to Montana. He never expected that police officer Cassie Douglas, the woman that stops him for speeding, would become important in his life. Drake also never expected to find a dead body behind a wall in the lodge he’s helping to restore. The danger to those finding the body and those who knew people back then , intensifies. So does the attraction between Cassie and Drake. The story was engaging, and as usual, the main characters, as well as the secondary ones, were well developed and likable. I especially liked Drake. On an aside, the story was a bit different from the previous ones in the series since Drake has no desire to be part of the Brotherhood Protectors. Lastly, if you are new to the series, it’s a stand alone. That said, I highly recommend reading the previous books. They are all engaging and worth your time. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Drake Morgan, ex Navy Seal, is tired of working in Texas for very little pay. He’s not exactly sure what he wants to do, but KNOWS he does want to be a hired gun. When a job opportunity in construction presents itself, he quits his job, packs up his apartment and heads to Montana. Drake, along with other ex military men, are helping to restore the Lady Luck Lodge. When demolition begins, Drake discovers a dead body hidden within the walls…
Cassie Douglas quit law school a semester shy of graduating, to return to Montana. Cassie works as a sheriff’s deputy. When she’s not working, she scouring the area for her missing friend Penny. While we never find out where Penny is, Cassie and newly “deputized” Drake work together to solve the mystery of the lady behind the wall. The closer they get to the truth, the more they have to watch their backs as they are now targets of the killer.
Drake and Cassie’s story is a great addition to the Iron Horse Legacy series! It had just enough suspense to keep you at the edge of your seat and flipping the pages. I also enjoyed that even though Hank Patterson of Brotherhood Protectors offered Drake and the other ex military men jobs, they ALL initially rejected the offers. I truly enjoyed this novel and would recommend it to anyone looking for a romantic suspense story! I read a gifted copy and all opinions stated are my own.
While this book is actually part of the Iron Horse Legacy series and has Molly in it it also stars Hank Patterson and the Brotherhood Protectors. It is another action packed romantic suspense that has you thoroughly engaged from almost the first page.
Drake Morgan has left the special forces but is having trouble settling into civilian life he tried working as a mercenary but couldn't settle to that either Now he has been offered a job by Hank who actually wants him in the Brotherhood but Drake wants no part of it. Luckily Molly wants to renovate the Lucky Lady Lodge and Drake is handy with a hammer Soon he reconnects with guys he has served with before all in the same position as him Even more importantly he meets Deputy Sheriff Cassie Douglass and he is instantly attracted When he finds a mummified body hidden behind a wall in the Lucky Lady he is soon helping Cassie get to the bottom of who killed her but someone wants to keeps their secrets and it has placed them both of them in danger. Will he finally find the future he has been looking for in Montana You will have to read to see
Hank Patterson, founder of the Brotherhood Protectors, has been busy recruiting former special forces guys. But this time he is recruiting workers to help Molly McKinnon and her fiance Parker Bailey do demolition and rehabbing of their property, the Lucky Lady Lodge. Of course, Hank is hoping that after their work is done on Lucky Lady Lodge that this crew will consider working for him. One of Hank's recruits is ex-SEAL and former mercenary Drake Morgan. It's Drake who finds the long-deceased body of a woman in an up-until-now hidden room in the lodge. Drake joins forces with Sheriff Deputy Cassie Douglas to determine the deceased woman's identity and find her killer.
I liked this different scenario for the ex-special forces guys. They had all met previously and worked well together as a team.I love Cassie and Drake as a couple. This book was a page-turner with lots of action and danger for Cassie and Drake. This is a must-read for Elle James' Brotherhood Protector fans!
I absolutely loved this book. Elle James has once again knocked it out of the park. Drake is a larger than life character. Alpha protector through and through. Leaving special forces he agrees to meet Hank Patterson to discuss a job. What is lovely about Elle’s books are the inclusion of Hank and the Brotherhood Protectors. What’s extra great is the men Drake is working alongside with brothers-in-arms who he feels a kinship with … hopefully the opening to more books!!!! Cassie is a strong kick ass character that has taken a turn in life that brought her home to work in less enforcement. The chemistry between Drake and Cassie is instant and all encompassing. Drake is a solid character, easy going and a strong moral compass. The perfect match for Cassie. Watching these two character work together to solve a murder is fascinating and so life like. Elle James pays infinite attention to the little details which just pushes this book to the top of the pile. Absolutely loved it. Way more than 5 stars given.
Keep your hands on the steering wheel and enjoy the ride in Drake, Book #6 in the Iron Horse Legacy Series by Elle James! Ex -SEAL slash retired merc Drake takes a slightly different path in Eagle Rock, Montana and decides to work on a restoration project instead of become an employee of Hank Patterson in his Brotherhood Protectors. (Don't worry, there are plenty of prior military, spec ops hotties involved:) And even before he gets to town, Drake "meets" small town cop, Deputy Cassie Douglass. Hee hee. So already we have a SEAL turned carpenter, a missing person, a mummified body and murder mystery, a possible killer on the loose, a landslide, a puzzling DNA test, and the cherry on top-a frustrating 1st date. What more could we want? It's a super fun (if a little predictable) whodunit mystery with a sprinkle of hot romance and a joyful family reunion thrown in. (There was a little loose thread as to the missing friend mystery, but that might be resolved in a future book???) Enjoyable read! I received an ARC of this book to review.
A very enjoyable read. I liked that Hank and Sadie made an appearance in this book.
Drake and Cassie were an interesting pair. I got the sense from their first meeting that their relationship was going to be somewhat of a struggle. Just goes to show me that first impressions are not always right. Their connection was swift and intense.
At a certain point in the story, the mystery fell into place for me. I had a very good idea who had done what and who was involved. Knowing that took nothing away from the story. Not to mention that the way all of the loose ends were tied up was totally unexpected.
The book also had an epilogue which always makes me happy. By reading this book I found action, danger, suspense, intrigue, romance, a nice amount of steam, and a good sense of family. I can always count on the Brotherhood Protectors for that sense of family, loyalty, and support.
I voluntarily read and reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
(4.5) Quick read that hits the high spots. I was not lost! It says book 6 and I felt right at home, score! Drake our ex military, SEAL, mercenary is trying to adjust to home life and having a hard time. Hank Patterson offers him a job, building, repairing The Lucky Lady Lodge. Cassie is our deputy and she is serious about her job. Cassie is also searching for her missing best friend in her spare time. It is mentioned that the Brotherhood could help, but it was turned down. I am thinking we will see this story in the future. I will say once Amy mentions what she set off for, I knew where it was going and I was right. This had steam and more steam but it also had suspense, humor, and reminders of what can happen to the elderly. Loved Ms Dottie, she kind of stole the show. Cassie and Drake were a good match and Drakes sensitivity made my heart beat faster. Thank you for the arc. I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.
Drake Morgan is headed to meet Hank Patterson in Montana for a fresh start. As an ex- Navy Seal, former mercenary he’s done fighting a war he can’t win. Rehabbing the Lucky Lady Lodge sounds like a dream job.
The first person he meets in town is a beautiful, feisty sheriff’s deputy Cassie Douglas, who pulls him over for Speeding. She definitely makes an impression. Drakes first day on the job and he makes a startling discovery. A body of a young woman. Cassie is the deputy sent to the scene. So the mystery begins. Who’s is the woman? How did she get there? Suspense, mystery, drama, a killer on the lose, so many twists and turns and lots of steam. I really love Drake and Cassie. They just fit together so well. Both strong and independent and passionate. “I voluntarily received this arc book for an honest review”

Everything is new to ex-SEAL Drake Morgan as he drove into his new hometown on his first day of a new career with the Brotherhood, though he’d be working carpentry until the cases come in. Despite the speeding ticket from Deputy Cassie Douglas, there’s a mutual attraction during their brief encounter. On his first day, doing demolition, Drake opens a wall with a body inside. Cassie’s notified and excited; she’s been looking for her best friend who disappeared four months ago.
Digging into the scene for evidence of the crime, identifying the body, upsets somebody as a new murder is committed and attempts are made on Drake and Cassie’s lives before the truth is all revealed. Rating: 4.25stars
This crew are one of my favourite series, great characters and location. Hank wants Drake as part of his Brotherhood Protectors but Drake and his friends are tired of war, politics, injuries and everything else that goes with the military. Instead they are refurbishing and old lodge. They found more than they expected while tearing down walls. A town's mystery to be solved. Murder and attempted murder prove they are getting close and someone is nervous. Deputy Cassie is on the hunt with Drake and their chemistry cannot be denied. There is more than mystery here and I really enjoyed how the story unfolded. Great series, I highly recommend it.
Drake moves to moves to Eagle Rock to help with renovations, and his first meet with a local is not what he had in mind. Cassie catches Drake speeding and issues him a warning, and later sees him again when he makes a discovery that has them teaming up to solve a mystery. As they get closer to finding out what happened, the two become closer but a killer has them in their sights. A good read with steam, a mystery, surprises and twists and turns and good characters. I enjoyed these two, no drama, no misunderstandings and open honesty between them. Some twists I didn’t see coming and a great ending. *I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*
Cassie is the Deputy who pulled over Drake for speeding coming into town. He’s officially out of the Navy and still looking to integrate back into civilian life. He’s in town to help with the reconstruction of a lodge and there are five other former special services friends. Things are going well until he finds a skeleton in a hidden room. Now they feel like it is their responsibility to put everything into finding out her identity. It’s a fast read because you have an intense need to finish it and find out who dun it. Lots of action and intrigue, I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book
Drake has left war and fighting behind to heading to Montana where Hank has asked him to help Molly and Parker rehab the Lucky Lady Lodge with the hope that when he's done, he'll work for him. On his way there he meets Cassie Douglas who's a deputy sheriff and stops him for speeding. While he's tearing down a wall, he finds a dead body of a woman. Cassie is on the job and Drake is helping her find the killer and who the woman is. Will they find the killer in time before more people die? There's action, suspense, drama, and romance.
This is a seriously suspenseful romantic suspense, and it starts with the MCs meeting over a traffic violation. Drake comes to Montana to once again be part of a family, invited by Hank Patterson of the Brotherhood Protectors. Cassie is the sheriff’s deputy that pulls him over – and they end up working together when Drake finds a dead body behind the drywalling he’s breaking down. There is suspense, there is drama, there is ancient history that causes unanticipated hurt, and it’s a fabulous read.
Drake was part of The Brotherhood crew to help restore Lucky Lady Lodge. Cassie is the deputy sheriff in Eagle Rock, Montana.
Cassie and Drake met when he was speeding, due to being late with his meeting with Hank Patterson and the owners of The Lucky Lady Lodge. Things were slowly developing between them.
In the meantime there were a lot of incidents ( a dead body, a shooting, an avalanche) . You will have to read the book to see what happens.
This book has suspense, romance, drama, twists, turns, an lots of emotions.
How many people were involved in writing this book?
I hate having to write such a poor review for Ms. Elle. She is one of my all-time favorite authors. This book is disjointed in the first 9 chapters that I am wondering if it was put together from a n English or writers class assignment. The development of the main characters timeline is so out of sync and conjugated it is ridiculous. The theme for this book is an occurrence that our society sadly suffers from. Thank all of the authors for writing about such subjects.
This is book 6 in the Iron Horse Legacy series and it features Drake and Cassie. She’s a county sheriff and he’s a former Navy SEAL who’s ready to listen to Hank Patterson’s pitch for joining Brotherhood Protectors. Trouble is brewing that throws these two together to solve an old but new mystery.
The events in this story line just kept piling up and had me shaking my head at the puzzle pieces that would click into place. This is a well thought out story line! I love spending time with the Brotherhood Protectors and I can’t wait for more!
I thought that this book was just terrific! Drake and Cassie's story offered up a very engaging blend of romance, suspense, emotion, action, drama, mystery and danger. Plenty of thrills, a few chills and some seductive feels pulled me in and kept me firmly turning those pages long after I should have packed it in and went to bed. Oh well, the tired eyes and sluggish brain were 100% worth it!! This is my freely posted, frank review.
I really enjoyed this new chapter in this Iron Horse Legacy Series. I loved the different type of construction jobs for these new characters. I loved the mystery, the story flowed really well, and the twists were quite unexpected, like the major event, I was totally not expecting that. Cassie and Blake are one great couple. and I do believe they will love either other til they are old and gray.
A great addition to the series. Interesting mystery with a satisfying ending. There's plenty of suspense, along with some heated romance between Drake and Cassie that will keep you immersed in this story. You may swoon over Drake, but you will also love Cassie's strength. Even though there are a few appearances from others in the Brotherhood Protectors series, this story can easily be read as a stand-alone. Enjoyable weekend read!
Drake and Cassie have explosive chemistry and are both determined to unravel the mystery of the 'unlucky lady', nothing will stop them, not even when the killer targets them. I love this cross over between the Brotherhood Protectors and the Iron Horse Legacy...all of your favourite characters in one book with the addition of a new Spec Ops team too! Loved it!
Thoroughly great read, could not put it down. It was full of delightful steamy romance with heaps of suspense that kept you biting nails as each clue revealed leading to someone’s death to keep a secret hidden. I consider this one of Elle James better books to be reading. Try it but make sure you have time to read it because you won’t want to stop until the end. Cassie and Drakes story is nail biting.
Drake was a fun but also drama intense story. Liked the way Drake met Cassie. Always good to read more about Hank Patterson, his wife Sadie and their children. Drake is starting a job with some other former special forces people who are doing construction work on an old building. Cassie and Drake end up with a mystery of finding the identity of a body. Plus a murderer to find who does not want to be caught.
Drake: WOW! Fantastic story! It had great suspense, surprises, the bond between the brothers and the hot romance. I liked that Drake was reconnected with his team's and mentors. Hank Patterson has a lot to offer his old team mates and the men and with of other branch's of military that he is aware of. I like how Drake met Cassie when he first came into town. He was intrigued by her. It was a great story.
