The law is about how you represent the truth. Love is no different.
Hilary Whyte believes that he has left his teenage troubles—and the person who embodied them—in the past. He has spent a decade building his career as a defense solicitor, believing that despite his troubled past, even the worst human beings deserve justice.
Now he has a promotion on the horizon as well as a fairytale wedding to his film star fiancé. On paper, life couldn’t be better.
But now he is being made to represent Dom Gosford, the boy who made his adolescence a living hell, on a double murder charge, and Hilary can’t be sure he is innocent. As the trial approaches, the two men are forced to travel a road of discovery, only to find that the truth of their connection goes much deeper than the question of who killed Lizzie and Dean Wood.
Reader advisory: This book contains a graphic description of murder and references to suicide, pedophilia, blackmail, pre-marital infidelity, and child pornography.
The Devil You Know is as much a courtroom drama & murder mystery as it is a romance -- this is not a complaint! Hilary is a solicitor hired to prepare the defense of his old school bully, Dominic, on a charge of double murder, and since Dominic insists that Hilary serve as his barrister too, Hilary represents him at trial: hence the courtroom drama. I can't form an expert judgment but I loved watching Hilary in action. Competence is sexy, right?
I worked out the villain's identity by around halfway through, but honestly I didn't care about that; I was bothered by the way Hilary repeatedly failed to press Dom on the question of his missing night (you'll see), and the problem that keeps Dom in the closet seems a little far-fetched in the present-day UK. As for the bully-redemption arc: it takes Hilary much longer to forgive Dom than is often the case with this trope. I really, really liked that.
I also really liked something else that may put many readers off: neither Dom nor Hilary is a cinnamon roll. Hilary has a fiance, Jasper, at the book's opening, and even marries him. You can connect the dots there. Dom's inclination to violence reasserts itself after Hilary initiates the romance-obligatory breakup with him. For me, their characterization made them more credible as emotionally troubled adults, and I ate it with a spoon.
I was torn between four and five stars; the missing-night question and the Dom-in-the-closet issue inclined me to ding one. Also, though I wouldn't call the sex scenes formulaic, they're not the freshest, either, and maaaaybe the resolution of everyone's problems came a wee bit too easily after all the preceding woe. But finally I came down to how I just. could not. stop. reading. It's long, and I was busy, and I still finished in two days.
I'm voluntarily reviewing an ARC that I got for free.
I loved everything about this book except the romance . I liked the writing, the case/mystery, the courtroom scenes , the tone and the atmosphere of the book .. everything was very enjoyable and very well done. The romance? That was bad.. When will the authors understand that writing a book with a bully redemption trope is a bit more complicated than having an ex bully with sad puppy eyes saying “I’m sorry” ? It’s hard to redeem a bully in the reader’s eyes , he has to deserve it, to work for it . Here we have Hilary, a lawyer, who in the beginning of the book we see him as this badass, confident successful guy. He has long hair , silver studs in his ears and a “fuck you” attitude.I liked him on the spot! And then he is reunited with the other MC, his client and ex bully , Dom. Well, Dom is still a bit of an entitled asshole and yet he manages to enchant his former victim and engaged to be married lawyer . And just like that Hilary becomes a spineless tool -a very very horny one. I don’t understand, it’s not the first book I read where the victim feels attracted to his former torturer without reason or thought and it’s just not realistic. Hilary forgets about his fiancé and sleeps with his ex bully and client (and presumably a murderer)probably in the first 30% of the book. And after he sleeps with him for weeks he goes and marries his fiancé just like that, as if nothing had happened. And of course, the fiancé was to blame for everything… And all it took for him to cheat on his bf was for Dom to ask nicely. Huh..
Great premise; disappointing execution. The premise: A lawyer is assigned a client (charged with murder!) who bullied him when he was younger but now seems changed. As a lawyer and MM romance fan--hard to resist. I am not familiar with the British court system but thought that the trial scenes (if you ignore the obvious ethical issues) were quite exciting and well done.
My main issue is that both MCs are almost completely unlikeable. The lawyer, Hilary, is putty in the defendant's hands--giving in to his client's come-ons every time when he knows he shouldn't. In addition, Hilary cheats on his movie star fiance who seems a decent sort (okay, he drinks too much--but then everyone does in this book). The other MC, Dom--more on that later) is a manipulator. Their relationship is based solely on sexual attraction--they speak relatively little--and when they do, it's mostly about the lawyer giving in or Dom being withholding. After he's been sleeping with his now former client, Hilary actually has the nerve to ask his fiance if their marriage is what he really wants! I was actually hoping at the end that the lawyer would go back to the movie star and they would work things out.
My other issue with the MCs is that once again this is an MF romance in MM clothing. Hilary has a traditional girl's name (this is even alluded to in the book); has long hair, wears earrings (hoops) and is always passive in bed and is of course usually described as "beautiful." Dom (what's in a name?) is dark and brooding with anger issues and is big and tall, muscular and hairy--right off the cover of any MF romance. Hilary, despite being a brilliant attorney, apparently has no muscles, in addition to having no backbone.
I really thought the two most sympathetic characters in the book were Jasper, the movie star, and Dean, the poor dead former lover of Dom--oh, also Hilary's brother and sister.
Good writing, lots of angst; lots of sex, good courtroom scenes; really unlikeable MCs.
3.5/5. Thrilling for most of the book from the personal drama to the courtroom battles, but the ending doesn't quite land and the smut scenes aren't great (there are 5 instances of the word "quivering" in the book, all in sexual contexts). CW for repeated cheating (Lawyer MC on his fiance).
Provocative and bold, this book tackles difficult topics in a sensible way. My first court-room drama murder mystery and I loved it.
I've always steered clear of books with infidelity but that blurb was what made me decide to take a chance on this one and I'm really glad that I did cos it was blatantly obvious early on that Hilary and his fiancé were never going to work. While that, in no way condones cheating, that is also one of the reasons why I enjoyed this book - neither one of the MC's were portrayed as perfect - but they definitely felt real. And I liked that it fit within the context of this story.
Hilary, in court, was hot and it made me enjoy every bit of the court case. His and Dom's long, difficult and continuing journey towards forgiveness and healing comes through nicely and they were most definitely hot together....🔥🔥
I found the supporting characters to be equally well-written and while you do figure out who the murderer actually is before it's revealed, what keeps you absorbed is that unwavering need to see how it all plays out.
I liked that this is a complex book, cos it means it’s one that doesn’t run away from controversial jabs or unpopular opinions.
This book made me realize, that taking a chance and stepping out of my comfort zone a little more, may prove to be a good thing ... 😘
*I received this novel for free in exchange for an honest review*
I love a good legal thriller and a legal thriller plus romance, yes please! This is what immediately drew me to The Devil You Know. It’s also not just about solicitor falling for the man he is defending in court, it goes deeper than that. Both characters have a history and not a happy one. To be together they need to work through this, and Hilary has to forgive Dom.
Hilary’s character is interesting as he has two distinct sides to him. On one hand he is a confident solicitor who is passionate and extremely good at his job. The other side is much more insecure. He is in a relationship and engaged to someone else, but deep down he knows that it isn’t what he wants but he still goes along with it due to outside pressures.
Dom’s character is more difficult to read. There are two sides to him also. He can be very impulsive and often reacts to issues with violence, which inevitably gets him into trouble. On the other hand, beneath this surface there is a sensitive individual who cares a lot for Hilary and deeply regrets his past actions.
The two of them click instantly (much to both characters’ initial frustration!), and as the trial looms they find themselves becoming increasingly drawn to each other. What I enjoyed the most is that it was not an instant romance. There were issues to resolves that were handled in a very realistic way and were not hurried. As a reader you are kept guessing until the last whether Dom is guilty or not and also if they will end up together.
The Devil You Know is a great legal thriller with plenty of mystery, suspense and romance!
I guess it was my fault cause i didn’t read the warning abt infidelity. And there is infidelity where u r remorseful about it later and try to fix the mistake. But no such thing happened. He cheated and never admitted or said sorry abt it.
Almost Dnf at 50% but i skimmed thru the reat just so i can write the review. I hate cheaters. And esp ones that try to blame the one they are cheating on. He was always trying to get jasper to admit he did want the marriage in the first place. Hilary is such a hypocrite. I hate both MC. And the name hillary for a guy was soo distracting i kept forgetting he was a guy.

This is the first book I have ever read by SJ Coles, but it will definitely not be the last. I was a little wary at first, thinking it was going to be a formulaic courtroom drama, but I was so wrong. The courtroom drama was far from formulaic, the twists and turns just kept coming, with secrets unfolding with every witness who took the stand. The budding romance between Dom and Hilary was wonderful, too, especially dealing with their past. And Jasper . . . . He seriously grated on my nerves, as I know he was supposed to. This would really make a great movie.
I really enjoy romantic suspense but haven’t had the opportunity to read many m/m legal dramas. Considering I’ve liked this author’s other books, I was pretty excited about The Devil You Know. Overall, this ended up being a bit of a mixed bag for me. The legal elements and suspense are done well, despite the surprise revelations not being all that surprising. I also found the idea of the bullied kid representing his tormentor. Unfortunately, the romance wasn’t quite a win in my eyes.
Hilary and Dom are interesting, dynamic characters. I liked their backgrounds and how they both struggled with their own insecurities. I also thought their shared history made for an intriguing conflict to drive the plotline. Despite liking elements of both men, I failed to completely connect with either man.
I think the lack of investment made the romance all the more difficult for me to accept, and with two major romantic conflicts to overcome—cheating and a history of bullying—I found myself repeatedly questioning this couple’s stability. Although I wouldn’t say cheating in a romance is a hard no for me, there are times it distances me from the couple, and that was the case in The Devil You Know. On top of that, I never felt that full reconciliation cemented between Hilary and Dom over their shared past. Sure there was an explanation, and I felt Dom’s character demonstrated growth and understanding, Hilary’s quick acquiescence felt too easy and convenient. I guess considering all the drama and conflict in this story, I would have preferred it be hammered out a bit more so I could really root for this couple. As it stood, I simply never fell for this couple or had a strong desire to see them reach their happily ever after. All that said, I will say that especially toward the end of the book, I could see how Hilary and Dom made sense as a couple, so I’m certain other readers may enjoy these two more than I did.
The Devil You Know is a solid legal drama that I think plenty of readers who don’t mind some angst, conflict, and blurred lines in their romances will like.

SJ Coles has a way with suspense that makes their writing stand out completely, and this book is no different.
This book centers around a murder investigation where Hillary is the lawyer for Dom. Dom is accused of murdering a former employee and insists that he didn't do it. Hillary isn't quite sure he believes him, especially at first, but its his job to at least sow enough reasonable doubt that Dom doesn't go to prison for the rest of his life.
And the court case is the central plot. Make no mistakes about that. A good portion of the story is in trial, is in the meetings between Dom and Hillary, is in gathering information about the case. And it makes for a really great story, because there are a lot of questions about what happened to the murdered victims and why Dom won't just say what he was doing on the night in question.
The characters themselves are very grey. Hillary is engaged - in a very public engagement and planning a very public wedding. Dom is married, though he and his wife have an arrangement. There is infidelity. There is also a history between Dom and Hillary from high school that makes Hillary's inability to trust the other man make a lot of sense.
This book balances out the romance and lust with the court case and suspense. I had a pretty decent idea of how things went down, but I was still shocked a little by how it all played out in the end.
This book is a single POV (told from Hillary's POV) standalone full of suspense and I highly recommend.
** DISCLAIMER: I recieved an ARC of this book for fair and honest review. **
Hilary Whyte has moved forward from the past, he thought, building a successful career as a defense attorney and settling into what seems like a good life with his partner. He does not anticipate meeting up again with Dom Gosford, someone he went to school with and one of his bullies from that period, as a client in need of a skillful solicitor when he is accused of murder. Neither expects that meeting under these intense circumstances will change both of their lives, and not just because of the case that they are both involved in. Being around and and then with Dom makes Hilary take a good look at what he thought was a satisfying relationship. Dom is wealthy and his wealth has protected him over time and he does not at first seem like a character I would like or root for. But as we get to know him over the course of the book he seems more flawed than evil and in need of a change which his reunion with Hilary offers a chance for him to live differently and better for him if he can get out of his present trouble. I really enjoyed this peek inside the English legal system as well as the evolution of these two characters. Neither was living a fulfilling life for him but each has a complex journey to make to get to someplace that will give them a chance to do just that. I received an ARC from GRR for an honest review.
Okay.... first of all - S.J. Coles is one of my fave authors in this genre. Their books are an automatic purchase for me. This one I particularly liked!
The action picks up quickly in this story and I was hooked within a very short number of pages. There's a sort of suspense to it that really worked for me.
Main character Dom has been charged with murder. He's a rich playboy with a bad reputation that leads many to assume he's guilty. He engages the law firm at which Hilary works... Hilary who was bullied mercilessly by Dom when they were both in school.
Reluctant and yet...willing to prove he's moved on with his career as a lawyer and his actor fiancé, Hilary takes the case.
Oh but things get juicy at this point! There are things that Dom won't talk about ... where was he the night of the murder? Why won't he talk about it? Why is it so important to him that Hilary believe he's innocent?
Their past may be complicated, but the present becomes equally complicated for these two men very quickly.
I absolutely enjoyed this one! I was even late for work because I couldn't put the book down. It's super engaging, has a great plot, the perfect chemistry and I loved it!
Sometimes the past can come back and knock you on your butt. Hilary Whyte is an up and coming defense solicitor at his firm and his life seems to be going great. He has a famous fiancé and their wedding is on the horizon. So what if his fiancé seems to be becoming more of his social media persona than the guy he fell in love with. Hilary is sure that things will get back to normal after the wedding. However, Hilary's past comes back to haunt him when his firm picks him to represent Dominic Hart-Godsford who is accused of murdering a brother and sister. Dominic made teenage Hilary's life hell until Dominic was kicked out of school. Dominic still gets into trouble but his wealth always seems to get him off with a slap on the wrist until now. Dominic seems to have it all: wealth, good looks and a beautiful wife. But as the trial progresses, secrets come to light, and Hilary is drawn more and more to Dominic. This is a great procedural book in regards to the English justice system and a good mystery and romance. I'm looking forwards to reading more books by this author.
This story completely held my attention. There are so many issues to this book that is beyond the mystery of who did the killing. Two kids in school. One a bully. The Other different. Move years later and the different kid gets to represent the bully being accused of murder. All the situations and reasons behind both of the behaviors of Hilary and Dom are in question. Why was the bully the way he was? Did the different kid, Hilary, hold a grudge and want revenge? As adults is there cheating that no one seems to feel too guilty about? I didn’t feel too attracted to either of the main characters. I didn’t hate them but they sure didn’t bring out my support nor sympathy. The author has the talent to take these two and make me want to know them. The daily lives are so real and the guys are so real that I had to see them as flawed humans with a great story. I really enjoyed the way the mystery was revealed. I am surprised at the ending and where these two futures end up. This is the reason this author is on my watch list.
This author loves to give you what you want but not in the way you want. The MCs always end up together at the end but only after much emotional turmoil. That's why I would classify this as a HFN. But I really liked this story and finished it in one night. Dom kept me guessing and Hilary had me really wondering if we would get that HFN. I think what really had me hooked was the underlying mystery.
If you're a fan of other works by this author then I think you'll love this story because its pretty long and gave the author more time to reveal their style. That style is mostly to have mostly gray characters that you end up rooting for.
I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it but there is a major plot element that would really turn people off. So if you're completely against cheating in any form then this isn't the story for you.
Dom bullied Hilary in school. Now Hilary is defending Dom in a murder trial. Though Hilary shows nothing but contempt and disapproval of Dom, he comes to believe in his innocence and finds he's attracted to Dom who returns his feelings. S.J, writes a gripping legal case and murder trial. It was fascinating and kept your attention glued to the the book. I couldn't stop reading. You felt such compassion for both Dom and Hilary even though both were tied to others and Dom's passion for Hilary was so hot, he couldn't help but reciprocate. This is a compelling story and very well written. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will read more by S.J. Coles. I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion.
WOW !!! This book has totally blown me away ! I don’t normally do court drama’s etc but I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It had the drama and suspense, with characters that you either love or hate, or just love to hate and it just hooks you right in !! There's also the back story between the 2 MC’s (school enemies) ... which just adds another depth to the storytelling. It's told from 1 POV (Hilary) and we him trying maintain a balance of his work and personal life …along with everything else. It’s a strong, passionate and romantic story – very real life - ontop of a court drama/suspense. Brilliant novel !!
Well, an intense roller coaster. Hilary is the lawyer representing his high school bully. There are multiple secrets held by Dominic, his marriage family are controlling, his 'redemption' seems trite and he is not really a lovable character. Hilary is strong and weak at the same time - he yields quite quickly to advances from Dominic. Yes, Jazz is a bit flaky but whilst I didn't warm to him, he didn't do anything he wasn't. The who and why of the murders is interesting and we get to see the clues as they appear in court. It was a consuming read, you do keep waiting for the sword to drop.
The truth is not always the way it seems, you make truth out of something that may be a lie, it depends how you show it. He has built his career and he is looking forward to getting married to his groom. Now he is about to go to court with an old bully and he is not sure he can do it. They are charged with double murder and he is not so sure they are innocent. How will he deal with this case? Are they innocent? Follow him as he tries this case in court
Hillary has been tasked with one of the most difficult cases of his perfect record career Defend a wealthy suspected murderer known for his violent outbursts, drunk shenanigans, and at times total lack of civility But that is just the tip of the problem Dom the man he is defending? Made his youth a living nightmare And is not cooperating in the slightest Can he prove Dom's innocence even if he doesn't believe it? Can he set aside their past?
I am torn between loving this and well...
The characters were so vivid I easily found myself loving/loathing them right away Which might have been part of my problem First impressions and all that
The story flowed so easily and kept me literally on the edge (I was guilty of the vocal gasps, cries of "No" and an occasional case of those pesky leaky eyes) The mystery The suspense The drama Their pasts The little clues dropped here and there I couldn't put it down
However and this was where I walked the fence The interpersonal relationships between the characters had me wanting to scream on occasion I don't want to spoil anything but certain things red-flagged for me and had me wondering how they could not see the issues It is a me thing for sure - I am that arrogant to believe the characters should see what we here in the "real" plane commonly miss Still...
Solid storyline Spectacular writing Intense drama Ohh and the twists Yeah - so worth the angst
There are plenty of twists and turns in this narrative– lots and lots of shades of grey, moral ambiguities, and decisions that are, if not overtly selfish, at the very least intensely self-motivated, as well as a few that are noble, if mostly for all the wrong reasons. It makes for a compelling read: it’s hard to look away from the utter chaos that is the murder trial and the even more profound chaos that is the connection between Dom and Hilary. They have the worst possible history, intense chemistry, and…did I mention the moral ambiguity? There are so many threads running through this story: the power of love, the relative worth of loyalty, fidelity, truth, etc. and the privileges and perils of class and appearances, to name just a few. At times in this story, only a few supporting characters are really likable (let’s hear it for Hilary’s siblings and his best friend/colleague), but Hilary and Dominic always feel relatable, even at their worst. If the blurb appeals to you, definitely give this book a try.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I get so excited when I find a new author that excites me so much. This book had me gripped from the word go. A new to me author and one I would like to read more from, especially if her books follow the style, vibe, mystery and romance as this one. My passion has always been reading romance and to a slightly lesser degree, watching crime shows and movies on TV. Always trying to play detective through to the trial to sentencing. S.J. played me like a fiddle, throwing in the steam and love confusion keeping me turning pages to catch the guilty. The troubled relationship between Hilary and Jasper when all the time I was shouting it was a mistake, to the sparks between Dom and Hilary originating from school days. This is what kept me on a second string as I just had to know how this would pan out. As for the other characters? They all played their role brilliantly. In fact this book is ideal to be brought to life on the screen.
A very riveting book with lots of unexpected twists and turns, interesting characters and a very convincing court case. The only grating thing for me is Hilary - for such a supposedly strong and intelligent character it's strange that he is so overcome by lust that he seems to lose his mind altogether. He cheats on his partner with his childhood bully when the bullying issues hadn't even been resolved yet. I can see the MCs fitting together in a relationship eventually, but not like this. There's no feeling of a romance here. Still really interesting reading.
Dominic and Hilary have a history that culminates in meeting again when Dominic is charged with a double murder. A romance mixed with murder, mystery and secrets. I enjoyed this book even though, it was a little too long. I found the murder mystery and romance blooming between Hilary and Dominic very interesting. This is my first time reading this author and I was disappointed.
Oh my goodness this was an amazing read! Mystery, intrigue, and steam!! Hilary is a solicitor hired to defend his school bully in a murder trial! Dominic accused of murder is living a double life. A story of Who done it and love all in one!! New to me author; fabulous writing that just hooks you! I received this book from GRR and these are my honest opinions!
Don't start this one until you have the time to finish it as you'll be immediately hooked and unable to put it down. Just like Hilary you'll cringe when Dom shows back up, wonder about how reliable a narrator Dom is and try to figure out how in the world the author is going to tie things up at the end. A tour de force of mystery, Englisg courtroom drama, suspense and steam.
I like a good story and the author has done it again creating this riveting court-room drama, murder mystery and MM romance. It's a fast paced intriguing angsty tale of Dominic on trial for murder, his lawyer Hillary, and their past not so great history as teens in boarding school. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I received this book as an Advanced Reader's Copy.
This was my first time reading this author and I was not disappointed. A gripping and engaging story. Filled with powerful emotions and drama. It was so interesting to watch each character navigate their way through all they had to. I read this in one go and would definitely read it again. I hope we see more from them.
This story seriously engaged me and didn’t let me go very easily. Dominic hires Hilary to be his solicitor/barrister on a charge of double murder. Dom and Hilary have a past. Dom was so deep and complex. This story overall is one that was hard to put down. I had to keep reading to see what would happen next. I absolutely loved the story!
