“I can’t tell if you’re about to kiss me or arrest me …”

Sheriff Nottingham should not be enjoying his pursuit of the witch Robin Hood. It’s supposed to be a job: catch the thief, bring her to justice, pursue the next criminal. But the longer their game of cat and mouse goes on, the more he never wants it to end.

Nottingham senses Robin is luring him into a political dispute between the king and an ambitious prince—a battle that threatens to destitute the poor in Sherwood. But the sheriff can’t risk getting involved. He’s already overwhelmed raising his little sister Marian and keeping the people of Sherwood safe, and Prince John isn’t an enemy he can afford to make.

Robin’s alluring use of illusion magic has Nottingham at his weakest. The closer he comes to capturing the witch outlaw, the closer she gets to stealing his trousers again … and his heart.

Sexy retelling of Robin Hood where RH is a smexy witch and the Sheriff of Nottingham is trying to work within the law to keep the inhabitants of Sherwood Forest from succumbing to the deprivations of poverty? Also they both use magic and fall in love with each other? Yes please! Turns out Noah Nottingham is the kind of by-the-book guy who can read between the letter of the law to find ways to support the downtrodden. Robin, though, has to go a little further. As the two circle each other, Noah tries to find a way to bring Robin to justice without causing her any damage. Robin, on the other hand, is trying to convince him to join her cause.

This is a short novel that we had a lot of fun reading! The focus on social injustice through the lens of the Robin Hood legend is a classic, and translated to a fantasy world is an enjoyable twist. Check Prater's comprehensive CWs - we always appreciate them!

This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.

OMG- How have I only just discovered S.L Prater?! The woman is a genius and I now HAVE to read ALL the books she's written so far.

I know a book is good when, halfway through the ebook, I look to buy a paperback. This is going to be published in paperback this summer with lots of art and I CAN'T WAIT.

PLOT:

When Red Sheriff gets a note about arresting a poacher, he doesn't think much of it. Imagine his surprise when he gets there to find the notorious woman decorating all the WANTED posters. Not only does he find himself fascinated by her beauty, he also finds out that she is a witch with intoxicating magic.

Robin Hood is on a mission; she wants to address the corruption in Stejin and give witches a safe, prosperous life- so what if she's stealing from the rich to do it? As soon as she spots Noah Nottingham, the infamous Red Sheriff, she knows she must have him.

As Robin leads Noah on a wild chase, sometimes allowing him to catch her for some hot, full of fire scenes, she always manages to escape him.

Can Noah put his morals and his job aside for the witch that has bewitched him?

My thoughts:

OH. MY. GOSH.

The smut is slow build but the tension is through the roof. I'll give you a hint: Red Sheriff is very very good with tying knots.

The story is short and at times feels very much like a novella (things develop very quickly) but despite it, I loved it.

I will definitely be going to read every other book because they are somewhat connected to this one and I'm not quite ready to leave this world.

3.5 stars. I think the writing was lovely but I found this romance to be so frustrating. For most of the book, they are at odds and it’s a bit of forbidden romance between an outlaw and a law man. And I can’t stand forbidden romances.

Add a dark world and confusing world building and I wasn’t sold on this.

Ahhh... I wanted to like this more. There were even cute illustrations inside!

It comes down to that I didn't connect with the couple. And they were back and forth and back and forth for 70% of this short novel... so... it just didn't work for me.

2.5 on the spice scale

Sheriff Noah Nottingham is a man of the law who always gets his man, and while Robin Hood is most definitely not a man, she's also not entirely opposed to being captured when it's Noah's tantalizing grip around her wrists.

What a delightful surprise this book was. The beginning was a smidge rickety since we really hit the ground running with both the plot and character interactions (like wow, they get acquainted real quick), but once the story solidifies, it's relatively smooth sailing from there. And my goodness, what a story!

It has everything you'd hope to find in a spicy fairy tale retelling - playful banter and magic galore, with the added bonus of sweet and tender moments accompanied with those more wicked and naughty. Plus, a surprising amount of darkness that I think was the perfect addition in giving the narrative a level of depth that I didn't expect but thoroughly enjoyed.

It's written from Noah's perspective in its entirety, which I love because it maintains Robin's air of mischief and mystery. Despite their ostensibly immediate familiarity, it's still the slowest of burns, especially leading to more of the *ahem* physical heat. The pull of their attraction and magic is written beautifully - it's butterflies in your stomach, heat between your legs, and tingles down your spine; intoxicating and swirly and lovely.

To be sure, Of Heists and Hexes is all about the thrill of the chase, but it's after our elusive Robin is caught when the real fun begins.

Thank you, BookSirens, for the ARC!

Here's what you need to know about Of Heists and Hexes:

It's a gender-bent Robin Hood romance between a female Robin (who is also a witch) and a surprisingly noble Sheriff of Nottingham, Noah.

The take on magic in this book is so clever and original, I've never encountered anything like it. The magic here not only gives off different colors (like an aura) depending on the person, but it also is imbued with the other senses - specifically scents and tactile feeling. I love the sensual way Prater describes magic in this book - especially when two magic-endowed beings interact. It's just so beautiful and delicious and you can almost feel it for yourself while reading.

Noah is into Shibari... and, turns out, Robin likes to be tied up. Did it just get hot in here, or is it just me?

Also - a rare unicorn occurrence: we get a ginger hero! And not only that, the moral compass on this man... I'm a lot like Robin where I find myself swooning in the face of his awesomeness. His job as Sheriff would gradually corrupt and destroy a lesser man, but Noah is such a wholesome guy, and his philosophy on forgiveness is timely and poignant.

Robin is a fantastic character. I love a strong FMC who goes after what she wants and sticks to her convictions. Her confidence, playfulness, and good nature are infectious, making her easy to love.

Also, Noah and Robin write each other notes, and the hopeless romantic in me ate that shit up.

Basically, this is a fantastic book and absolutely worth your time. The only reason why I wouldn't give it a solid 5 stars is because it is awfully short, and I'm a greedy bitch. I wanted more. But the banter, the thrill of the chase between our two mains, the air of mischief, the heat - it's all just so good.

Best Robin Hood retelling ever

Noah is the most lovable Sheriff of Nottingham you'll ever meet, and Robin makes every movie Robin dull as paint. Do yourself a favor and read this book.

(short conclusion at the end)

*spoiler free*

A Robin Hood retelling where Robin is a woman AND a witch, and the Sheriff of Nottingham is a good person? Where there are witches, thieves, a proper amount of smut, but also some dark themes? It's a must-read for me.

WARNING
This book mentions abuse, specifically child abuse. It wasn't shown, but it was told from the perspective of the child and it was so well written that it made me feel uncomfortable, angry, sad, and a bunch of other emotions. If that might be a trigger for you, I would recommend skipping those scenes because they do hurt, they hurt a lot. If you can stomach to read them, you have to! It's an amazing piece of writing!
Check the trigger warning before going into this book!

Everything about this book was enjoyable - the world-building, the magic system, the politics of the world, and the characters and their relationships (and smut). But it feels like it wasn't written to its full potential and that is why it's not a 5 star read (and I didn't really connect to any of the characters, but I have no idea why).

I was a tiny bit confused with the setting in some parts, specifically the city. The woods and the village were amazing, but I couldn't figure out the city. Apart from that, the world-building is simple enough to get you into the story right away but also detailed so that you are still thinking about it and figuring the world out.

The magic system is fascinating, and I adore the fact that there are two ways of looking at it - the witch perspective and the "human" (priest) perspective. Here is where I found the book slightly lacking. I WANT TO KNOW MORE!!! It's such an interesting concept, and I am left with far too many questions as to how the magic of this world works. Since this is book 1 there might be more details about magics in the future books and that might change my review a bit (ups hehe).

The politics and the law made me so angry most of the time, and that shows that it was well written. I always enjoy stories where someone goes against a tyrannical ruler or an unfair law situation, and here I got both! The development at the end happened a bit fast, but it was so enjoyable! When someone gets what they deserve, the best type of ending!

The characters were written in such a way that you can only love them or hate them, there is no in-between. But there is so much depth to them, the way the inner struggles were shown is just amazing! And the relationships as well, both romance and family, so good (friendships a bit less, but it is a romance book so the focus was ofc on the romance)! This book somehow managed to be both a slow-burn and insta-love (-ish, more like insta-attraction that developed into love really really fast) at the same time. I am generally not a fan of characters falling for each other that fast, but here it was both explained (kinda) and mentioned by characters that it was fast so I could get over it. Still, I personally just don't like fast-developing relationships.

The smut was really well written and paced. I was slowly going crazy waiting for it haha. And KINKS! Who doesn't love a good kink (I surely do hehe).

*spoilers*

I do want to talk a bit more about characters and what I loved about them because they really are amazing.

NOAH - I didn't really connect with him as a character, but everything about him made sense! The reason why he followed the law the way he did and why it was hard for him to even consider changing sides - it was so well written, just wow. And the scenes where he had to take the matter into his own hands, and then his emotions after - LOVE IT! My favorite were the scenes where he was with children, both the good and the bad scenes - amazing writing right there! I had a bit of a hard time getting with the magic intuition thing, but that might be simply because I need to know about the magic system itself.

ROBIN/JACQUELYN - she was a bit predictable, but a fun and strong character nonetheless. I am a bit sad we didn't get to see her heists, it seems like that would be a really fun read. I like her as a character a lot, but who wouldn't like a smart, strong, sexy thief.

MARIAN - I am currently the most interested as to where her character will go to. She is a kid, but so much trauma happened to her already that that has to have some kind of influence on her in the future. But also, she has an amazing family that is always there for her, so that can lead her in a different direction than trauma would. + she is a witch just starting to learn about her magic, I WANT TO READ ABOUT THAT!

MISS PAULY AND ANDRES - my favorite characters that I need to know more about. That's it. Nothing more to say. I love them!

PRINCE JOHN - a villain that is here to be hated. And I did hate him with all my heart. The happiness I felt when he died has no words!

THE WATCHMAN - I forgot his name (didn't even remember it to be fair), but the asshole one. I only put him here to say that I screamed with happiness when he died!

CONCLUSION

I absolutely recommend this book.
It is a fun, sexy read with interesting characters and magic. It has really dark and raw elements that are uncomfortable to read, so if that is not something you can read about, either don't read this book or skip those scenes (but if you can read them, the writing is amazing!).
I can't wait for book 2 to see how the world will develop further and what will happen!
(now that I think about it...will book 2 even be about the same characters, or will it be a retelling of another story? I guess I have to wait and see XD)

Of Heists and Hexes by S.L. Prater
A Witch’s Ever After #1

Robin Hood retold with magic, witches, a bit of steampunk, and a few more splendid twists – Could not put it down!

What I liked:
* Noah Nottingham: Sheriff of the Wilds and their forests, meets out justice, son of a thief, brother and caretaker of his younger sister, there for his grandmother, righter of wrongs, surrounded by magic, goes by the law, able to see more than just the law, attracted to a witch…a comely witch
* Robin Hood: thief, steals from the rich to give to the poor, magic user, free spirit, more than a pretty face, has her eye on Noah, holds her secrets close until they must be revealed, intelligent, knows what she wants and she wants Noah
* The play on Robin Hood…so well done
* Finding out who the main characters of this story were in relation to the Robin Hood myth told so many times before
* Seeing the elements of the original myth in this version but so very different
* The romance as it developed – the teasing, chasing, magics, steamy bits, and growth of the relationship
* The way magic presented itself and how it was used in the story
* How this fictitious world is believable in that it is similar in many ways to the one we live in
* That this takes place within the world of another book I have read previously by this author
* The way it all works out in the end
* Knowing that there will be another book to read in this series

What I didn’t like:
* Exactly what I was meant not to like
* Having to wait for the next book in the series

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

Thank you to the author and BookSirens for the ARC – This is my honest review

Oh no! The Sheriff has arrested a sexy witch and has taken her on his horse! 😏😎
Don't you love when you a book starts with a favourite trope?

📖 @ ARK (this is my honest review)

👶 ~ Adult. Read the triggers described by the author (the best place). And know that you are in very good hands.

🌶 ~ So freaking hot! There was rope bondage, primal kink... 🥵 but what I love in SL Prater's books is the freaking tension! And yes, he knows how to tie knots 🥵

⚔ ~ Wow! Just wow! It was so rewarding in so many levels! As a woman, as a person, as a citizen and as a mother... damn!
Noah, the sheriff, was requested to arrest a thief that steals from the rich to give to the poor...
Yeah! I know you've seen this before. What you haven't seen is a mysterious sexy witch as Robin 😏 and a renown sheriff that prefers to turn a blind eye 🥰
Now, don't get me wrong, this gets serious. Child SA is discussed on page, women are a commodity and the poor are getting poorer. So, who will bring justice? And how justice will be served? (this last was good!)

👑 ~ Noah, our sheriff 🥰 how he applies justice gives me so much closure! And how he forgives himself, the abuser and moves forward... 😥 it's a life lesson.
Robin... my Robin... I have a new crush. I love when a woman sees the worth of a man and takes her time to ... it's a secret😏

🌎 ~ Welcome to SL Prater's Victorian Gaslamp world! Where the patriarchy imposed by priests believe that free spirited witches and children are a commodity to be used and abused. But book by book, we see it crumble apart... so rewarding

📖 ~ How do you do it? How do you give me a trope I love, tension and two characters that I know I will love? All this in a few pages?

In the years, the retellings were been a part of my bookish life and I love how the authors express their feelings and the facts in their own way. The legend of Robin Hood is famous around the whole World: the known thief who steals from the wealth people to donate to poor people. But here we have a different details from the original story. Sheriff Nottingham is the main character of the novel, who tries to arrest our heroin "Robin Hood" for the heists accuses and magic hexes. We have a touch of fantasy in this storytelling - which I loved! - that it'll be very import during the events in the novel; Robin is not so easy to be caught and takes pleasure in torturing the Red Sheriff, slipping out from justice. The figure of Robin is crucial for freeing the Stejins from Prince John's greediness, pumping the population with duties, over duties, just for his self-pleasure; and this situation will bring Noah Nottingham to make a decision: arrest the outlaw and following the will of the law, or make an allience with the criminal network?
QOFT: What would you do in Noah's shoes? Would you follow your heart, or your ethic?

Hello Fellow Reader,

I haven't read too many Robin hood retellings, especially gender-bent ones, so I went into this pretty blind. The book is from Noah, The Sheriff of Nottingham, point of view which is interesting. I really liked Noah, he was gruff but also charming, kind and caring. I wish we had a couple of chapters in Robin's point of view as I would have liked have read more about Robin's band of witches, even still I was very happy with Noah and he may just become my new book boyfriend.

The Chemistry between Noah and Robin was hot and when you eventually get to the smutty goodness, you realize it was completely worth it. At first, I felt the story was moving a bit too slowly, but by the fourth chapter the true plot starting unraveling and the pacing picked up. The magic in Prater's world was interesting and wished she went into more detail about it. Also, the ending was very satisfying and the last chapter provided good closure.

Overall, a very interesting retelling and I can't wait for more in the series.

If you love fairy tale retellings, this one is a must!

What if the Sheriff of Nottingham was a good person, Robin Hood was a woman, and they fell in love? This book is the answer to the question you didn’t know you had. I absolutely loved this retelling of Robin Hood, it was so unique! I always love a good rival-to-lovers and this book delivers that and so much more.

The blend between magic and a steampunk inspired world is really gorgeously done and a lot of fun to read.
Although the story is mainly light-hearted, there are some darker elements, so do read the triggers at first!

It’s a medium burn, with the spicy stuff happening more towards the end of the book. Although there’s certainly a lot of tension throughout the whole story, which makes it so much better when they finally give in.

I loved this clever take on Robin Hood. Noah, the Sheriff of Nottingham, is searching for a thief and a poacher. Robin Hood turns out to be a beautiful witch who turns herself in just to find out more about him. As they verbally joust, their attraction grows to passion. I liked the surrounding characters and the world building based on the classic, Robin Hood. Their passion becomes steamy and the book has a satisfying conclusion ( not a cliffhanger as I feared). I enjoyed the book and the author's writing style. This book should appeal to anyone who likes witches, fantasy and strong women. I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary opinion.

Thank you to Book Sirens and publishers for this eARC - Of Heists and Hexes.

Of Heists and Hexes is a retelling of Robin Hood and the first book of the Witch's Ever After series.

What if Sheriff Nottingham isn't the bad guy after all?

This short novel follows Sheriff Nottingham and the witch Robin Hood as they battle lust and possibly love whilst being on the different sides of the law.

Their chemistry sizzles off the page and the world-building in this story pulls you in, making it an intriguing read.

The author definitely knows how to lure the reader and makes this short story come to life. I'll be keeping my eye out for the second book in the series.

Read this book in 2 sittings, it was a really good read. It’s not very long and the chapters are a great length. The characters were nicely explored and the plot was easy to follow. I do kind of wish we’d got to see the sketches the main characters were exchanging, I think a few illustrations being included would have added so much. The only reason I’m not giving it 5* is because I felt the ending was rushed.

This is a story I could not put down. I found myself wanting to dive back into the story even though I should have been cooking, tending to my family, or other chores. Robin and Noah drew me in and their attraction drove me to read more and more. I like that it followed Noah and fleshes him out. He is a complex man. The political intrigue kept me reading. If you like witches, humor, and romance this is the book for you. The settings are wonderfully fleshed out. My only complaint is that it ended. I am hopeful there will be a sequel.

Of Heists and Hexes by S. L. Prater starts off with a bang and keeps on rolling. Packed with action from beginning to end, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole way through. The storyline is fast-paced and very well written, filled with witches, magic, hometown justice, abuse, murder, politics, thievery, intrigue, subterfuge and romance. The characters are well developed and engaging. Robin is truly an inspiration, despite being on the wrong side of the law. The Red Sheriff is a wonderful counterpart to Robin. Overall, a very good read, filled with something for everyone.

The Sheriff of naughty-ham and Robin of the hood. When I started this it felt sort of silly using the tropes and names of folk lore for this book. However, the writing itself as well as the interaction between the lead characters drew me in. This is a good romance story with a wee bit of swashbuckling involved. It had the potential to be more. I do have a problem with the ending though. It was rushed when it could have led to more of a story. That part was my only disappointment. I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book by this author that I've read, but it definitely won't be the last! I grew up obsessed with the Robin Hood story and this book does it sexy justice. I love how the magic is written in this book, it's poetic and engaging and I hope that other books set in this world are written in a similar way. The couple in this romance are lovely, the Sheriff in particular stole my heart. And the steamy games they play really take their relationship to the next level.

Highly enjoyable read and can't wait to read more from this author!

This Robin Hood retelling is amazing! Rather than being the typical Robin Hood and Marian dynamic, it follows Sheriff Noah Nottingham and Robin Hood who is a stunning witch.

The way that magics is described is incredible, especially with the way that Noah experiences them. The smells give a life to the descriptions that most books never touch on. It made me want to burn a different candle with each scent.

The story was compelling and the tension between Noah and Robin was drool worthy! I loved this one and need more!

I enjoyed this romantic Robin Hood retelling! On the one hand, I do think the romance got started a little too quickly for me and that this wasn’t as easy to get into at the beginning as it could be. I also thought the resolution felt very rushed. On the other hand, I liked the characters and thought the romance was written well. It handles some difficult topics with grace, and I think this is a good book overall and definitely is a quick read. As always, I’m a sucker for enemies-to-lovers!

Terrific book. A fantasy with believable characters that you can’t help rooting for. I got so caught up in this book that I read it in one sitting. It’s a slow burn romance with steamy, fun sex. A Robin Hood story like you've never heard before. A sexy Sheriff? Oh very much so. I love the world building in this story, and the subtle way the classic Robin Hood characters are weaved into the story. It's sexy and fun but also deals with some serious issues the characters are facing in their land and time. I want the Netflix movie version please and thank you! Highly recommend.
