Marin finds herself with a recent weight problem as she lately has been eating like a foodie. She does get back in her happy mood when she surprises Wakana with their brand new hi-tech camera. When she meets up with familiar faces, he meets up with a professional cosplayer he met through social media and it’s a surprising meeting. The duo do see their next project involving a group cosplay on a nun horror series, and we even see someone we haven’t seen in a long while at the end. A (100%/Outstanding)

Not my favorite one so far. I understand Marin is a model and so she's going to worry about her weight, but I don't need to see a skinny girl being called fat (AND OTHERS AGREEING THAT SHE NEEDS TO LOSE WEIGHT) in this day and age. I liked that Gojo said he would just adjust her cosplays... but then he also kind of judged what she was eating? IDK.

Marin has a surprise in store for Gojo, but she’s in for a shock of her own when it turns out her lifestyle as a young girl might not be compatible with her life as a model. Then another cosplay event is on the go and Marin’s on the other side of the camera while Gojo isn’t good with names.

If you were following this for burgeoning romance, this will not be your volume. If you were after it for ample fanservice, same. But if you love the utterly wonderful friendship between Marin and Gojo just as it is, welcome to heaven.

Of course, we know these two are crazy for one another - the volume starts off with Marin gushing over Gojo so hard I honestly thought I missed the volume where they became a couple. Marin remains such a stand-out character in this series. Her attitude is like pure sunshine.

Then we get the dreaded weight gain storyline, but it’s mostly played for laughs after the initial shock and, to be fair, it’s coming from her modelling management so if anybody is going to give somebody stick over weight, it’s probably them.

I don’t blame anybody who’s over and done with these storylines, but I do like how it’s handled. Marin shames herself by, essentially, cleverly allowing the mangaka to stuff in some additional fanservice where she tries on her costumes to see what fits.

What really works is that none of her friends notice, or care, and when she thinks Gojo is going to be upset that nothing fits her again… he offers to let the old costumes out. There’s just no shame besides her professional obligations, so that’s as good as that can be done, I think.

One of the best chapters comes when Marin decides to get new socks (even I have to admit I love that style, dang it), along with a new camera. Naturally Gojo takes a turn with it and the way the story is framed as her talking over a series of photographs he’s taking is the perfect bit of low-key stunning. It’s a lovely bit of creativity.

The cosplay convention has Gojo moving on to making swords and props, which lets another aspect of cosplay get explained, and he meets up with Akira, who thinks he’s a girl. And who he thinks is a guy. It’s not the most exciting set-up, plus you can tell exactly where it’s going early on.

But, you know, it does get interesting. Akira clearly has some odd beef with Marin we’ve yet to explore and the after party promises a big old group cosplay shoot next time and brings back some old favourites for another round. There are a lot of really awesome characters in this series and having them come back is never a bad thing. I cannot wait to learn more about that murder mystery game…

Between the characters and the stellar artwork you’d already be near perfect, but throw in the way it cleverly adds in just enough technical detail as it goes (a rare talent) and its general theme of acceptance and you have a winner in every respect. And you even learn the hilarious truth behind why Gojo has no parents…

5 stars - I mean, knock it down a bit if you’re not here for the weight stuff, or want this to be more romantic. This is absolutely high grade comfort food and I think it nails the characters especially well and makes even spending time with them goofing around a pleasant proposition worthy of praise.

I continue to really appreciate this story, very cute and light. At the same time, all types of topics are addressed: from cross-dressing to issues related to one's own bodies, it is very interesting to discover what the author has to say. The only sore point for me is always Gojo hahaha I can't stand him anymore. At the beginning he was there as a character but when we reach volume 9 I need him to wake up! Marin on the other hand is wonderful, I love every aspect of her!

I was a little unsure about the weight gain story arc but I think it was actually handled pretty well. Marin is still super adorable here but honestly for some reason Wakana has lost a little of his charm. I’m looking forward to the next volume and the murder mystery game cosplay though! Sounds interesting.

This volume is transitioning us into a new arc which means new faces and returning old faces. I will say however that it overall felt a bit slow and lacking all things considered compared to some of the earlier volumes. Hopefully, things pick up in the next one.

I usually really like this series, but this volume decided to introduce a random “omg Marin is so fat now!! she has to go on a diet!!” subplot and I am Not A Fan for many reasons. I hope it blows over soon.

Marin got fat.

Well, not really. But in the context of a thin but busty high-school girl who models frequently for spare cash, packing on a few extra pounds during the winter months often means those high-definition photo shoots are showing a little too much detail. Western readers can probably approximate any analogous scenario to the problem Marin faces, being stared-down by fashion editors ahead of seasonal catalogue releases, but MY DRESS-UP DARLING v9 uses Marin's crossroads to address a modern cosplay query: What happens when one's body type, and the cosplay character's body type, don't match?

Smart and devoted enthusiasts of any medium know the answer, but for newbies like Marin and Wakana, the challenge poses no obvious or immediate answers. Married to this issue is the prevailing flirtation with imposter syndrome (or, similarly, context validation), wherein an individual's skill and success never quite aligns with interior/exterior perceptions.

MY DRESS-UP DARLING v9 is a generally light-hearted pondering of the mental adaptations one makes when one's capacity to cosplay shifts slightly beyond one's grasp. For example, Marin snags a new, mirrorless camera (and Wakana's sort of afraid to use it), and Wakana connects with a cosplay prop-maker (a young woman whose reticent nature outstrips even the typically quiet doll-maker).

The manga's introduction of Akira, the prop-maker, is a clever and intriguing addition to the cast. Akira is the attractive, dark, and brooding type, but she's also unsure of her skill. Questions about whether she's "good enough" or "original enough" constantly fog her brain. As such, it's no surprise she shuts down when invited out for drinks and snacks. In an increasingly vibrant social scene, the character literally disappears, manifesting in only two panels in the book's final 17 pages. Akira is an interesting character, and her deliberate marginalization tells an even more interesting story about the nature of public performance fandom and the in-group dynamics they typically engender.

MY DRESS-UP DARLING v9 has hit a nice stride, insofar as its characters' camaraderie and goals are concerned. Should the creative team have reached this mark several volumes ago? Probably. However long the journey, the destination, one hopes, will always be worth it.

Konnichiwa a todas, lectoras🌸

The love story of Wakana and Marin continues to bloom!
Highlights:
- In the first part of this story I haven't liked, we get a few issues where some of the modelling industry pulls a "you have put on weight" to Marin. While I understand that the industry is like that, putting body shaming in such a wholesome manga came off rough. (Though she was eating 12k calories per day... )
- Marin buys a DSLR Camera and takes pics with Wakana. She is always so adorably gorgeous!
- Marin attends a cosplay event as a photographer and learns more skills about pic taking.
- Wakana plans to meet up with Akira, a cosplayer who uses materials to make amazing props. When meeting, they both thought they were the opposite gender, which is a little funny about our preconceived notions.
- After the con, they all go the after party and Marin gets asked to be part of a group cosplay for Coffin, a horror game. They are all going to buy costumes off the rack instead of Wakana making one for her. They need more people, so Marin calls JuJu...

Overall, a not too exciting Volume, but a great set up for what I am guessing will be Wakana's first time cosplaying. Just have a feeling (no spoilers for me!)
Recommend.

Another super cute, super fun volume of My Dress-Up Darling. This installment really hits its stride by focusing on the duo's mutual growth and deepening connection, while also introducing some fresh, interesting plot developments.

I loved all the stuff with Marin focusing on losing some weight. As a model, this is super important, so while it might feel mean, it makes a lot of sense. The comedic highlight of this thread is the food moment with Gojo realizing where his leftovers were going the same night, which was hysterical.

I also enjoyed the cosplaying photoshoots this time since it wasn't just Marin. It's great to see a wider cast involved in the creative process and the final results.

The new character introduced here, the designer girl, seems okay, but I really hope this doesn't become a love interest for Gojo, as the series' central relationship is what makes it so special.

Overall, this is another solid volume that delivers on all fronts: comedy, romance, and creative passion. A 4 out of 5.

There is a major problem with these: I read them too fast.

Marin puts on weight (gasp!). She also has competition in the form of the somewhat mysterious Akira who Wakana meets up with to discuss cosplay modelling (that's prop making). There's something up with Akira which isn't revealed in this volume. Could be interesting.

As usual, there's humour and a lot of detail on cosplay. And cameras.

As a side note, there's always a little comic at the end in which Fukuda gives some little comment on what's going on with the life of a mangaka. This one corresponded with the production of the anime, and the comic is about reviewing the first storyboards. And having exactly the same reaction as I think I'd have if one of my books ever got turned into animation or live action. 'Wow, they're alive!' It's nice to know that people who are this successful are as human as the rest of us. (smile emoji!)

5/5⭐️

What a cute volume!! This one has some gorgeous panels, I absolutely loved the bit where Gojo was trying out the camera😭 Marin is sooo gorgeous. But honestly, nothing crazy happened, it was a really chill volume. Marin has to start a diet because she’s been eating extra (thanks to Gojo’s cooking). Marin also gets her DALR which is great!! I hope they both get into talking photos more in the next volumes (I cannot get over those panels, I want more lollll)

Also the side characters are amazing, so loveable and cute! I hope they stick around and join the friend group!

This new character Akira…. stunning and mysterious!! Left off on a bit of a cliffhanger with her, what’s her deal?

I cannot wait to see the group cosplay, it’s gonna be so fun!!

Marin has gained a little weight since she's been eating so well with the Gojos. So now she's on a diet, and none of her cosplay outfits fit her. But, her part-time jobs have allowed her to finally pick up that camera she has been wanting so much, and now her pics are going to be even better.

Wakana and Marin take the new camera to a cosplay event, and Wakana agrees to meet up with a person who does modeling for cosplay, and he and the person he is meeting is surprised when they meet and neither of them is anything like what they were expecting.

They both make some new friends at the event, and they all end up meeting up after. But something strange is going on with Wakana's new modeling friend.

This was SO CUUUUTE. <3
I need to know more about her.
JUJU AL FINAL!?!? THAT'S THE CONTENT THAT I WANT TO SEE.

Bien.

This one was probably the slowest so far but that doesn't mean it was boring.
The interaction between Wakana and the prop maker was just as interesting, if a little short, as Marin with the cosplayer she and Wakana had met together previously and the photographer she intended to meet up with.

Marin also contending with her weight is likely a common trend with cosplayers wanting to stay true to the characters they portray and modelling in general, which we'd found out she previously does as one of her many side hustles.

More of a 3.5 star rating;
Marin gets to the shocking revelation that she’s gained a bit of weight, while also shocking Gojo by showing him that she actually bought the really expensive and fancy camera. It was cute seeing Marin reunite with cross-play friend: Amane, along with potentially making some new friends and being invited into a group cosplay. It was also amusing to see Gojo meet someone he admires that makes cosplay props and I’m hopeful this new character ends up as his friend.

Much of the same as the previous novel. Nothing is really moving along. We do meet new characters and one that seems to not like Marin. Marin is struggling a bit because she’s dieting and Gojo seems to be taking a bigger interest in cosplay. I’m really hoping for more in the next volume. The first five or six volumes had enough charm that it’s kept me and I want to see the end game but it’s starting to drag. 😩
