Kardea shares her multi-generational "passed down" recipes and innovative takes on Gullah classics with home cooks everywhere. "Gullah" and "GeeChee" refer to a distinct group of African Americans living in the coastal areas of South Carolina and Georgia who have preserved much of their West African language, culture, and cuisine. The Way Home is an unabashed love letter to her family's roots, packed with dishes that combine West African herbs, spices, and grains with traditional Southern cooking. "Gullah people laid the foundation for Southern cooking. Before farm-to-table was a fad, it was what Gullah people did," Kardea explains. "I want to show the world that soul food is not monolithic. It's so much more than fried chicken and vegetables cooked in pork. It's seasonal, fresh and delicious! "
Flavoring her recipes with cherished family anecdotes, memories, and helpful tips, The Way Home is a perfect blend of the modern and the traditional. Kardea honors her proud heritage and shows off her own signature class and sass. The result is a marvelous, big-hearted collection of recipes and stories that will nourish you, body and soul.
I have been waiting for this release before the book was even written and was soooo excited that "Hubby" suggested we take a 5.5 hour road trip to Greenville, SC to attend the book signing.
I stayed up most of that evening reading Miss Brown's story and being mesmerized by the receipes!! My husband's favorite recipe is the "Crab Rice"!!
As a descendant of the Lecounte's, from the Leconte Rice Plantation of Riceboro, Ga, I can say that I am an expert on all things rice...it is ingrained in me from my Ancestors who tilled the soil. Therefore, I feel a kinship to the Gullah/Geechee culture which is celebrated throughout this cookbook.
There are dishes with origins from the Sea Islands that I grew up with. I only wish my Sweet Mama was alive to witness this!!!
If you love southern, soulful cooking, purchase this cookbook immediately!! You will not regret it!!
Kudos Kardea...you showed up and showed out!! The Ancestors are proud!!!!
I’ve been awaiting Kardea Brown’s cookbook since first watching her show, and this exceeds all expectations. Seeped in tradition, her beautiful recipes pay homage to her Gullah ancestors as well as Ms. Brown’s personal experiences with modern twists. Looking forward to making many of her recipes.
Very Good! Ms. Brown is a former social worker turned television cook! This book is part memoir and part cookbook. It has recipes for traditional Southern cuisine and "New Gullah" nouveau dishes. She shares her Gullah-Geechee culture and cuisine for all to enjoy! A very good read!
🌷Book Quotes:
"I always enjoyed watching cooking shows in much the same way as some people like to watch soap operas."
"52% of the Africans who became Gullah came from Angola and the Congo."
"One consistent crowd-pleaser was Swamp Water, which was basically spiked sweet tea, lemonade, and ginger beer."
Let's be honest, my favorite college classes were always cultural anthropology--although not my major. I loved the look into this culture, and was even a tiny bit flattered when Brown called me cousin. I'm not going to cook any of her recipes, but the stories about them and the people were wonderful. IF you love seafood, you'll be very interested in her ideas.
Ms. Brown has been a staple on Food Network. She has an amazing show on Gullah/Deep South cooking, which is easy to follow and great recipes. This new cookbook is the first one written by Ms. Brown and I recommend everyone add this cookbook to their collection. The recipes are like her show--easy to follow and quite yummy!
Kardea has given us a set of recipes that really read like a collection of comfort food go-tos! She makes each sound so appealing, yet simple enough for anyone to make. I also love that she explains each category of recipes. She truly gives the reader a peek into the foundation of her love of cooking.
There are so many recipes I will make and so many I wouldn’t have thought to make but now I am thinking about it. Great flavor just jumps off the page. Nothing basic but also nothing so grand you don’t feel like it’s not doable
An absolutely lovely cookbook with so many delicious and on the easier side looking recipes. I will definitely be purchasing a copy of it for my own shelves.
Miss Brown shares her family's history, her personal journey, and many of the recipes that have appeared on her tv show, Delicious Miss Brown, in her first cookbook. If you've watched her show, you'll also recognize her voice in the written text. Most of the recipes are easy to prepare with commonly found ingredients. Plentiful photographs capture both the food and the sea islands of South Carolina.
This was fun, lots of good recipes. Many of the recipes don’t require a lot of the ingredients, some don’t require a lot of steps. Good southern food, with nice pictures.
