The plot bored me and I found the characters unremarkable, hence nothing could keep my interest despite how much I read. The story was also told in 3rd person which contributed to my dnfing it @ 55%.
I’m always in the mood for a Cinderella story, and an overworked, underappreciated veterinarian is definitely someone who deserves a happy ending. Eve Pendle’s Her Fake Date Until Midnight , the first in her Secrets of Wildbrook series covers a few popular tropes in a sexy and enjoyable romance that had me rooting for the heroine from the very start.
Clara Rowe works in a rural veterinary clinic in Wildbrook in North Devon. She used to date the owner’s son, Dan, but they’ve broken up and Dan is getting married to someone else. In fact, she’s been invited to the wedding, but she knows it’s more a pity invite than anything else and Dan certainly isn’t expecting her to bring anyone. She’s thought about moving away but her mother relies on her, especially as her father is suffering from dementia and still lives at home. Top that with the painful facial acne she takes great pains to cover with makeup, and the thought of dating anyone, or even meeting anyone new, is off the table.
Hedley Decker, CEO of his family corporation, is on an enforced month-long vacation at Oakham House, a property he owns but has never visited. The appearance of a sick dog on the doorstep prompts him to take it to the local vet, where he happens to overhear Dan pushing Clara to attend his wedding and snidely commenting that he’s looking forward to meeting her date “if you have one”. Clara examines the dog – a bitch – and realizes she’s pregnant and dehydrated, and Hedley explains that it isn’t his dog but that he’s willing to keep her until the owner is found. It dawns on Hedley that perhaps they can come to each other’s aid. Having never taken care of an animal, Hedley needs help with the dog. And Clara needs a date for the wedding; a fake date, he makes clear (though he is attracted to her). When he proposes such an arrangement Clara is flabbergasted at first. But the idea of showing up with a handsome, wealthy stranger who can save her from the humiliation of showing up solo at her ex’s wedding definitely has some appeal. And it turns out to be exactly what she needs. Hedley is attentive, charming and supportive, and at the end of the evening, when he asks permission to kiss her, things get hot and heated quickly, and one ‘fake’ date soon leads to several real ones. But with Hedley’s time in Wildbrook limited to a few weeks, will Clara get to keep her Prince Charming?
I liked several things about this book, starting with Hedley helping Clara by showing up as her date to her ex’s wedding. Everyone who has ever been in a similar situation will know how much it helps to have a supportive figure at their side. (Of course, a wealthy, handsome one is the dream scenario!). But Hedley also appreciates Clara for who she is and isn’t at all put off by her acne problem – in fact, he understands her need to have her makeup with her to feel comfortable and is also able to recommend a dermatologist to help her (only if she’s comfortable with it, though). He makes her feel beautiful and attractive. In dealing with Clara’s father and his dementia, Hedley is patient and kind and since he didn’t know him before he started to lose his memory, the stories her father tells are all new to him. Hedley can see the strain on Clara and her mother and is able to find a part-time caregiver for them and makes it seem as if they are doing him a favour by keeping her on. All in all, he makes for a wonderful partner. And I’d be remiss not to mention how attentive he is as a lover, too. The sex is steamy and fun and Hedley’s attention to Clara’s wants, desires and needs is a first for her and makes her realize what she’s been missing.
I liked seeing Clara gain control of her self-confidence and start to think about a future that isn’t under the thumb of her ex-boyfriend’s father and his clinic. And when Hedley’s business starts to intrude on the idyllic time they’ve spent together on his vacation, she’s able to stand up for herself and show him that she’ll not be satisfied with just half his time – it’s got to be a full-time relationship or nothing at all. Fortunately, Hedley makes the right choice (after some angst and soul searching).
There are some interesting conflicts to be resolved, including Clara’s complicated history with dogs and Hedley’s actual job (he’s a wealthy businessman with a secret). Plus, there is a happy ending to the mystery that brings them together in the first place. Clara has a great local friendship group that is a good sounding board for her relationship with Hedley. I’m looking forward to reading their stories in this series! All in all, Her Fake Date Until Midnight is an enjoyable, sexy romance with a well deserved happy ending for Clara and Hedley.
A stray dog leads to a billionaire and a veterinarian fake dating in exchange for help finding the dog’s owner. Her Fake Date Until Midnight was an entertaining and enjoyable romance low on angst and with plenty of heat.
On holiday mandated by his sister and the CFO of his company Hedley Decker finds a dog on his doorstep one that looks close to death. On the advice of the builder who has been working on his house, he takes the dog to the vet where he meets Clara Rowe and realizes after spending just a bit of time in her presence and seeing how awful her ex-boyfriend and co-worker treats her suggests he be her date to the ex’s wedding and while he doesn’t mind doing that, there’s something about her that makes him want to spend time with her. Hedley was a workaholic and his priorities were a bit screwed up, but it was easy to see that underneath that was a kind and compassionate man he just didn’t let that side out very often.
It was easy to like Clara, but at times she drove me nuts because she let people in her life both professional and personal run all over her. She had a good heart and she always jumped into help others yet she didn’t always take the best care of herself. I liked that Hedley showed her how to have fun and enjoy life and also helped her realize her self worth.
Though these two characters were very different, I felt they complemented one another well. There was no doubt Hedley’s world was nothing like Clara’s world, but he never made her feel less than and he was generous with his time and when he saw a need he worked to find a way to help.
This was my first book by author Eve Pendle, but it won’t be my last. Her Fake Date Until Midnight was a fantastic romance and I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.
Eve Pendle is probably one of my favourite histrom writers so, obviously, I was always going to be very interested in her first foray into contemporary romance. Books about billionaires are, admittedly, not ones I go out of my way to read, but neither do I actively not read them. And, besides, billionaires or not, the synopsis is definitely one that caught my attention.
So, here are some reasons you should pick this book up.
— The chemistry between Hedley and Clara. I think this is my favourite aspect of all of Pendle’s books I’ve read, because for each and every couple, you can feel the attraction leap off the page. You can’t help but root for them together.
— Hedley is a man who likes going down on women and, for that reason alone, you should read this book. I mean, this, surely, is the only valid sort of straight male love interest.
— Who doesn’t love a romance with a side of fraught relationships with parents? I always think that romance novels should be about more than just the romance (although, obviously, the clue’s in the genre name as to which should take precedence), and this one does it so well. Clara’s relationship with her parents, and actually, with the village as a whole, is a fundamental part of this book.
— In general, it’s just a very enjoyable book to read. It’s fun! What more can you possibly want from a book, when you boil it down. I had a lot of fun reading this one and it’s one I’d highly recommend.
I liked several things about this, like the small town setting, interesting secondary characters, and decent romance. My main issue is that this has a FMC whose negativity and low self esteem made it difficult to enjoy her journey. I appreciated seeing a FMC with acne, and having dealt with it myself I know how it can mess with your view of yourself, but her inability to stand up for herself for the majority of the book wasn’t a fave. But I’m curious to read more in this series.

Not my normal genre but I love the author’s historical romances so tried this book & I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I really liked Hedley & I did liked Clara but wish she'd have stood up for herself more. A well written delightful read which I was drawn into from the start & read it in a couple of sittings & look forward to he next in the series My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This book was fine. It wasn’t the best romance I’ve read. The spice was nice, but I didn’t feel the chemistry between the characters. There was no build up. I guess I like a little more angst. 🌶️🌶️🌶️
4.5⭐️ Hedley Decker, grumpy billionaire & workaholic finds a dog on the doorstep of his holiday home in the country. The dog seems ill so he takes her to the village vet practice & meets Clara Sweeting. A sweet country vet, born & bred in the village. The dog turns out to be pregnant. Clara is the polar opposite of his usual dates so he is shocked himself when he offers to be her fake date at her ex’s wedding. The ex who she works with, whose fathers owns the practice & who dumped her 6 months ago. Sparks fly & Hedley hopes for a one night stand, he’s only there for a month & then back to London. Except he unexpectedly catches feelings but their worlds & lives don’t mesh & Clara is offended at the offer Hadley makes her. I loved this book, it was quick & easy to read with all the feel good factors.
Highlights 📝 • ‘“So,” he said as they approached Clara’s house. “It’s nearly midnight. Have you got your shoes, Cinderella?” “Yeah.” She pointed her toes for a few steps. He glanced down at her feet in silver strappy things. “They hurt like hell. Can’t wait to take them off, and not just so you can locate me again.” “I find phone numbers more effective, generally.”’ 😂 • ‘“What are you doing here? You said the weekend.” Her eyes searched his face. “It’s Friday night. I’m taking you home.”’ 🥰 • ‘“Clara? I need to tell you something.” No response. Just the slow in and out of her chest against his. She was fully asleep. He allowed his eyes to close. “I love you.”’ ❤️ • ‘Clara Rowe: WHAT Hedley Decker: Your mum. I believe you know her. Lives next door to you with your dad? I think she likes me.’ 😂 • ‘Suddenly, Clara saw Dan for what he was: a pretty boy so used to having his own way, he’d become a bully. If he were a dog, she’d recommend castration.’ 🥲 • ‘“I’d need to hire you to be my date to a wedding.” He huffed with laughter. “Another fake date? Whose wedding is it this time?” “Yours. And Ill also need a ring.”’ 💍

Review ✍🏼 Okay this really wasn't t best book. It was like a Cinderella retelling but with very obvious hints of it. The story really contains little narration. Everything remains very superficial. If you were to ask me now who all featured in the book, I already can't answer it. You don't really get to know anyone. Not even the main characters. She is insecure, he is rich. Their fake date ends, they fall in love, he leaves due to work, he misses her, comes back, they marry, happy ending. The whole story regarding her being a vet, him finding a dog and them meeting that way AND saving more dogs in the end is quite cute, though. But apart from that, there were some really sort of embarrassing parts. A bit of smut is okay, but this was missing a lot of story. A bit of a shame, but it was an easy read! Great for in between more difficult books and the middle part of the book was quite okay.

This was a sweet Rom-Com with an adorable meet cute involving a pregnant stray dog who happens to turn up at the Vet office Clara works at.
Clara meets Hedley just when she is in desperate need for a date to her Exs wedding. She works for Dan ( her ex) father and is afraid with cut balls dhell be losing her vet job soon.
He serves as her date but wants more from Clara then one date. Spicy and has some funny scenarios
This was adorable. From the adorable dog, to the grumpy billionaire, to the cute awkward vet.
I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to move onto the next one…which I’m moving onto right now. There were some British words or some expressions that I was like, wait what? But thank you google and I was good to go.
I had to stop reading this halfway through! I hate DNF books, but I just couldn't bring myself to continue. I loved the premise, and I even enjoyed the MMC, but I'm not sure if it's the writing style or that some of the words used made me internally cringe 😬 I don't want to give this book less that 3 stars because I know someone out there will enjoy it
love it. He started out as a fake date, but it got real before the night was over, it's a great story. If you love romance read this book, you will enjoy it as much as I did.
This book is a typical love story centered around two sports players. The romance works because their schedules are similar. The heroin is a strong, sassy, and confident woman. Innuendos fly amongst all the characters Tree
3⭐️ I found it hard to get into and the plot was boring me. It was incredibly slow, and it’s in the 3rd person which also made it hard for me to get into. I hate DNFing a book but I stopped 40% through.
This is a book where I appreciate what the author is doing more than I actually enjoy the book. His Fake Date Until Midnight felt like Pendle took the category romances from the late 1970s – 80s and then gave it all an update.
Clara is insecure and a bit of a doormat. She’s also an enormously competent vet and not insecure when it comes to doing her job. The job itself is insecure because her jerk boss is the father of her jerk ex, and he’s announced that he’ll be letting one vet go. Clara desperately needs the job because her mother needs help taking care of her father. She’s insecure about her appearance because she has adult acne.
Hedley is a billionaire with a twist – he knows his labor didn’t create the wealth (he inherited it) and he using the financial company he inherited to quietly take down bad companies.
Hedley and Clara meet when Hedley finds a dog on the doorstep of his vacation home and takes her to the vet. While there, he overhears Clara’s ex, also a vet in the practice, making sure Clara will be at his wedding. Hedley offers to be her fake date if she will help him locate the owner of the dog – who is pregnant.
I really appreciated the twist on the shy woman who attracts the attention of the billionaire. In this case, while he is physically attracted and makes no bones about it, he notices her because when she taking care of an animal she is competent and strong willed. I loved the friend groups that Clara and Hedley have. And, of course, I loved the politics.
I felt like some of the more emotional issues were solved a little to easily and neatly. Clara had a lot going on, maybe too much, especially for so much of it to be solved, or well on its way to be solved in a fairly short book.
I ended up not loving this book, but I enjoy Pendle’s writing enough that I definitely want to read the next book in the series when it comes out.
I received this as an advance reader copy from the author. My opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed this book, cute dogs, awkward vet and billionaire what a combination. Finding a stray pregnant dog on his doorstep ment a trip to the vets. Making a deal to care for the dog with him he would be her fake date to her ex’s wedding. The connection was real tho and I enjoyed that connection keep growing and growing with a humour that just made it more realistic.
DNF at chapter 21. Starting was promising despite the insta lust. I was hoping it’d turn out better, but alas by chapter 21, I still couldn’t feel the emotional connection between the hero and heroine. It still felt as if they were in lust with each other.
I disliked the main H and h. Hero refused to share much about himself and heroine was such a doormat. She was not happy with the hero for a while but took him back so quickly when he returned from London. I’m done with this.
I was beginning to think I wad in a book slump because I just couldn't get into this book, the storyline, or the characters. I really wanted go like it, but I had to end @70%. It saddens me because I really was hoping this would be a good series.
He's hot. Rich. Domineering. And grumpy. Hedley Decker is used to people obeying his every command, but the unconscious stray dog on his doorstep isn't impressed, and nor is the pretty veterinarian who saves it. Overhearing that she needs a date for her ex boyfriend's wedding, he proposes a deal: she'll help him find the real owner before the puppies arrive, he'll be her fake date. But one evening isn’t enough. She’s a temptation he can’t resist.
She's kind, trapped, and soon to be broke. Her dad's illness means Clara Rowe desperately needs to keep her job at the only veterinary clinic, owned by her ex's father. If that means overtime and going to the wedding solo, so be it. Then gorgeous and arrogant Hedley Decker storms into her life with an offer of one night of pretense and pleasure that’s too good to be true.

A scorching hot fake dating, opposites attract, small-town Cinderella British romance with heart, humor and banter.

Will they let their past design their future …
I must say if I did not read the author for her historical romances, I am unable to say if I would have chosen this book. And I am glad I decided to give it a go. Hedley appears as ruthless in life as he is in his office. So while on a forced holidays, he is determined to seduced the pretty sweet vet who took care of the stray dog that took up residence of his doorstep. And while he can be the naughty talker to get what he wants, he does not push when it is not wanted. Behind his domineering facade, he is a kind man, a man who fight in his own way to right the wrong done to weakest people. Upon his first encounter with Clara, he sees the woman hiding under a lot of makeup, he accepts her with her flaws and is entranced by her empathy and gentleness. Clara, I struggle more to like her, maybe it was her little town’s doormat persona which did not rub well with me. She used all kind of excuses to never stand up for herself, it is her friends and now Hedley who do the job. Shyness and insecurities do not mean she must let everyone walk on her, when she is perfectly able to stand up against Hedley’s strong character. Sure she has a lot on her plate, but by always bending she allows everyone to see her as an easy target. Even with her parents who are just a bit overbearing, she still acts the guilty teenager for a decade and a half mistake, like she was still paying back for it. If they were still so angry, there would not care so much about her well-being.
Hedley is the man who helps her understand she has the right to decide for herself, to follow her heart, even if it means it will make things more difficult between them, while he must decide what is the most important at this turn of his life, if he chooses to see things differently. I loved this dirty talker with a teddy bear heart, Clara needed more work to appreciate her but from the moment she finally stands for herself, she became the right woman for him. 4.5 stars
Now I am curious about the next story.
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 hot hot hot
I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
Trigger Warnings include: on page descriptions and discussions of a parent with onset dementia, on page description about the loss of a pet, experiencing offhanded comments and judgement about adult acne, dangerous living situation for dogs
This ticked off all the Cinderella retelling expectations. Opposites attract, “he can’t possibly love me, he’s rich”, home by midnight. After a dog appears on Hedley’s doorstep, he has the perfect proposition for the vet he takes it to: he’ll be her fake date to her ex’s wedding if she helps him find the dog’s owner. Makes sense. Plus, it’s the perfect excuse to keep Clara in his life. He’s just meant to be there for a breather, but he doesn’t know how to turn off. And he definitely doesn’t want to be away from her. Unfortunately for me…my enjoyment stopped there. There was such a heavy focus on negative things. Most of the book is spent with Clara treating herself terribly. Her “friends” are definitely not truly her friends and it doesn’t even make sense that she’s in that friend group? Her ex-boyfriend and his dad (who is her boss) are literal bullies. And poor Hedley resorted to calling her a doormat (multiple times), because no other explanation was hitting her hard enough. I understand her feelings about needing to take care of her parents, and the guilt about wanting to live her own life. But to get mad at him because she wouldn’t live her own life, and he wouldn’t quit HIS company to live her life with her…that’s when I stopped trying to like her.
My Favorite Quotes: • “Anytime you want to be given multiple orgasms by a man, I’m here.” • “I can’t think of anything I want more than you.”

Hedley is the CEO of Decker Corporation and taking a month-long vacation from London in the small town of Wildbrook. When a stray dog shows up on his doorstep, he takes it to the local veterinarian practice, where he meets Clara. She’s one of the vets, and she cares deeply about the animals she treats, but is treated callously herself by her boss and his son – who happens to be her ex. When Hedley overhears that Clara needs a date to her ex’s wedding, he’s happy to step in to help, as long as she helps HIM with finding the stray dog’s owner.
But the fake date isn’t all fake – the two of them have an instant attraction to each other that morphs into a real relationship. However, each of them have secrets that stand in the way of taking their relationship to the next level. Can they eventually find a way to trust each other and find happiness together?
I was looking for a romantic read in the lead-up to Valentine’s Day, and this book hit the spot. It has the usual back-and-forth will they/won’t they in the intro, some great chemistry written between the characters, several explicit sex scenes and, of course, the HEA (happy ever after). Good pacing and character growth too. I’d definitely recommend this book to romance readers, and I look forward to reading more of Ms. Pendle’s writing.
I *loved* this book. It's so funny, I had so much fun reading it. Eve Pendle is so good at making you laugh in different ways, from cringe-worthy situations like the entire wedding speech that have you laughing at the characters, to hilarious comedic moments that never drift into slapstick. (Nothing against slapstick, but it's not my thing in rom-coms, and it's very prevalent. You won't find that in Her Fake Date Until Midnight.) The real humor is in the banter. So many zingers, which are balanced by the heartwarming characters. The friendships feel real, and so do Clara's challenges.
And can we talk about the steamy scenes? 🥵
Actually, I don't think I can. I'm still blushing, a week after reading this. Phew.
Hedley is a grumpy delight, with perfect, classic British deadpan humor (I'm American, so I eat this stuff up.) Clara is a modern wallflower/Cinderella heroine who can't quite believe this guy is for real, so he has to actually prove himself for once in his life instead of just getting the girl with no effort. It's a delicious setup & great execution. Loved it. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

Hedley Decker, CEO of Decker Corporation is forced to take a vacation by his sister. He ends up going to Wildbrook for a month. When a sickly stray dog shows up on his doorstep, Hedley decides to take her to a vet. Enter miss Clara Rowe, the veterinarian who helps the stray dog. While I’m the office, Hedley overhears a conversation between Clara and a coworker and realizes Clara needs a date to an upcoming wedding. Hedley decides to proposition her and offer her a fake date to the wedding in exchange for her help with the stray dog.
Her Fake Date Until Midnight is as hilarious as it is steamy. 🥵 Hedley is a serious dirty talker *fans myself* and a man who knows his way around the bedroom. Clara is one lucky lady. 10/10 must read book!
This is book one in The Secret's Of Wildbrook Series and it is Hedley and Clara's story and what a great start to a new series. Hedley and Clara are the total opposite in every single way but they just seem to gel together so perfectly and there chemistry is so strong and intense that you can feel it sizzling off the pages and I loved how Hedley stepped in to help Clara by being her fake date to her ex's wedding and the night that they spent together is so unforgettable for both of them and you find yourself hoping that there take relationship between them can turn in to something real and show everyone what they are made of and get the happy ending that they both deserve. I really enjoyed reading this book as it was so well written and had great characters and a storyline that pulled you in and kept your attention throughout. This is the first book that I have read by Eve Pendle and I look forward to reading more in the future.
With her self-image in tatters, Clara is reluctant to accept a client's offer of a fake date for her ex's wedding, but the alternative is unthinkable. Hedley is used to people falling into line to obey his commands, everyone that is, other than his sister, who demands that he takes time off for a much-needed vacation. The plot is romantic with some suspense, although there is a fair amount of angst as Clara battles with her looks and her rude employer. I was, however, uncomfortable with the frequent references to the race of the various characters, none of which seemed to enhance the storyline, other than to add a jarring note. Clara is a likable character, one with a common problem, but Hedley was autocratic and did not particularly worry about whether his opinion was valid or not. The book does, however, come to a successful conclusion. I received a copy of this novel as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
This wasn't awful, but personally I wouldn't say it was....good. Wasn't a fan of the writing of this one and the cha acters really didn't do it for me either.
The MMC was deeply unlikeable to me. He'd call her a doormat and say that she lets people pressure her into stuff then in the next breath pressure her into sex and when she says shes not comfortable with stuff he'd say something along the lines of "oh you'll like it when I do it"
The FMC had her moments I liked her a lot more than him, I understand her a lot more and a large part of her story is her insecurities and it was nice to see someone not IMMEDIATELY get over their insecurities i will say that.
The best part of this for me was the dogs, would loved to have seen more of the dogs!
All in all not a particularly bad book, just not a particularly good one either. Characters aren't particularly likeable and there's not much of a plot.
This was an entertaining read although one of the main characters, Clara Rower did annoy me in the way she let everyone just walk over her. I just wanted her to stick up for herself. Clara was completely unaware of her own self worth, she let physical problems define her. Hedley Decker had no problems there, he was very self assured, although he did have problems relating back to his childhood. Clara had an interesting group of friends who did their best to encourage her to live her life to the full. What I did like about Hedley was the way he made Clara feel good about herself. There a number of things happening including a stray dog and the mystery as to where she came from, a romance that may just be short term and some people getting their comeuppance. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I don;t normally read contemporary, but this caught my eye and I was thrilled to have found it! It was interesting watching Clara grow a backbone and reminded me a bit of me, so cheering her on was very satisfying. Still not really sure what Hedley’s business was, but it was interesting to see how in his attempts to not be his father, he almost became him. I loved Michonne and felt for Clara’s mom as I watched a parent slide into dementia- those details were very spot on. Pleasantly surprised there were only a few f-bombs- thank you author for that! Nothing ruins a story more than that being thrown around like candy on Halloween.
I really like this series even though I'm not 100% sure about the British lingo. There was couple of times that I was like what but then a few paragraphs later I figured it out. I understand how Clare feels about herself because I have that feeling as well. Hedley is so good for her because he stands up for her but also sees her for her. He doesn't care about her imperfection because to him she is perfect just the way she is with or without make up. Clare is great for Hedley because she showed him what love can be and how it should be as well. I can't wait to read the next book.
