School of Charm #8

The Misplaced Miss Eloise

Rate this book
Everyone agrees Miss Eloise will make the perfect bride… until she runs away from her own wedding. And straight into the arms of an unsuspecting rake.

There was no plan involved. Eloise fled in a moment of sheer panic. If she'd given it any thought at all, her plan wouldn't have entailed breaking into the home of the infamous Viscount Wycliffe. And she certainly wouldn't have been caught. In her defense, the vexing viscount was supposed to be away. It wasn't as though she'd intended to involve him in her escape. Viscount Wycliffe might be her brother's friend, but he's no knight in shining armor. More like a rogue in tarnished steel. But he's a wealthy rogue, with the means to help her find freedom abroad. And he would, she decided. Whether he liked it or not.

But along her journey to freedom, she discovers he’s more than he lets on. He can be charming, for one. And surprisingly chivalrous. Though the viscount claims he’s no thief who absconds with runaway brides, she discovers he’s wrong. He is a thief, of sorts. And he might just steal her heart.

I’m so mad that I got tricked into reading this book.

While the characters are not in love at first sight they are within 24 hrs of meeting each other. The FMC’a emotions are regularly all over the map in the span of a 3 seconds and the MMC’s motivations are shallow at best. This book was duel pov and the MMC perspective added nothing to the story. The author just used it as a device to desperately try to rationalize the insta-love.

At times it felt like an anime show when the characters spill their entire life story and background trauma with little to no prompting and called it bonding over a vulnerable moment.

Facebook pushed me an ad for this book and it intrigues me enough to buy it, but the set up and dialogue that was advertised NEVER HAPPENED.

False advertising. Bad character development. I’m so mad I paid money for this.

There was no plan involved. Eloise fled in a moment of sheer panic when she realised she couldn’t marry her aging fiancé. If she'd given it any thought at all, her plan wouldn't have entailed breaking into the home of the infamous Alex, Viscount Conrad. And she certainly wouldn't have been caught. In her defence, the vexing viscount was supposed to be away. She then wouldn't have hidden in his trunk either.
The eighth book in the series & it’s easily read on its own even though Eloise is the sister of Charlotte from book 6. I loved both Eloise & Alex, she’d been brought up to be good & obedient but on the eve of her wedding panic sets in & she runs. Alex is also running from his past, the pair talk on their journey to the coast & the chemistry builds. However Eloise’s brother arrives & they part. I loved how they found their HEA, they had to face their demons & realise what they really wanted. A delightful & charming read, which I read in a sitting as I was routing for the pair to find themselves & each other
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

A clean romance between a young lady and her brother's best friend. After rejecting her groom, Ellie runs away and enlists Alex in her escape. He's leaving for the continent for an extended trip. Something is happening between them. Attraction and finding out what they want. It's not really complicated, but it's a matter of taking their time.

The ladies from the School of Charm certainly know how to make a splash. Eloise has been rigorously trained in the fine art of being the wife of a nobleman, but her gentle disposition becomes a hindrance in the face of her autocratic and domineering parents who seek connections in society at the expense of their daughter's needs or compatibility with her groom. The old man with bad breath is not who Eloise envisioned as her husband, hence the panic attack. When her worst nightmare becomes a reality, Eloise runs, right into the home of the man who is supposed to be absent from London. Alex has had a miserable childhood and his attendance at his despicable uncle's pre-wedding party is no joy either. When the impertinent Miss Eloise demands that he dance with her, he is irritated and lets her know, quite firmly, that he cannot stay as he is about to depart London. Finding her scrounging in his study in the middle of the night is his first surprise but when he discovers her in his carriage later the next day, he is quite dumbfounded. Of course, he does the right thing by sending for her brother, although after she has gone he doesn't feel quite so noble. Ultimately both Eloise and Alex have to face their past and determine what they envisage for the future, but it takes courage and determination. The story comes to a sweet and amusing conclusion as the unlikely pair falls into the hands of fate. I received an advance copy of this enjoyable romance as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

A runaway bride... oh yes from that terrible old man with bad breath she was to marry tomorrow.
If she hadn't pushed him down and ran, he would have had his way with her before the wedding!

Eloise had escaped but she was not sure where to go! Then she remembered her brother's friend and her bethroths nephew Alex Wycliffe who was leaving on a trip to the continent.

This series has been so delightful and this may have been one of my favorites. Oh yes, I say that about every story by this wonderful author don't I?

I adored Alex and how he tried to maintain his control and how he and Eloise bantered back and forth!
Not to be missed!!

I found this book in the series very amusing. A short & sweet fluffy Regency romance, with a little adventure and a female main character who finds her strength. It was a little like Georgette Heyer’s novels but a lot fluffier and faster paced. I recommend reading the previous books in the series, and if you like completeness I also recommend reading the Sweet Romance series that precedes this series.

My Review:

So this book was a bit mediocre. The setup of the story was pretty good and I really liked the beginning of it, but then it goes downhill after the first third of the story. I really was curious about this one because I had found some neat trailers on Instagram for this author's books but to be honest I kinda felt a bit burned by this author. When I noticed how short this book was and on Amazon for a novella its like $6, that is WAY too much for a novella in my opinion. (so if you buy the series buy it in bulk otherwise its robbery *shrugs* I did have high hopes for this story but I was going into it expecting a full length story and it just felt flat for me. I will probably try her again, knowing what to expect but mostly because I bought the books in bulk and don't want to waste the money on it. But if you want to read this author, check your library first!

Very light read, I flew through this one. The plot/concept was very simple, but delivered on exactly what it advertised. I enjoyed the dialogue, the banter was engaging, and the story wrapped up in a very satisfying way without feeling too rushed. I would read more from this author - I will likely pick up more from the series this novel comes from.

A short & sweet romance. Cute story!

This was an easy and fast read. I enjoyed the plot as well as the chemistry and banter between the main characters. It was a little predictable, but I was okay with it.

More like 2.5. I just struggle with the Disney romance of falling in love in one day trope. Sweet, easy read. But so cheesy.

Got tricked into reading this due to an ad on instagram. False advertising at best. The ad was more interesting than this "entire" book (which was also tiny, more like a -bad- novella)

Sooo dull. The insta-love was, well just that. No chemistry, no built up, just weird chain of events and 'can't live without you anymore'-"feelings" without any real reason.. wasn't the worst book I've ever read, but it was certainly NOT good

Riding in trunk was not very realistic. I did love how he first received her acquaintance. But her running in formal wear at night without over coat also seemed not real.
So take a flight of fancy here.

The Misplaced Miss Eloise is book 8 in the School of Charm series and I highly recommend reading these in series order as characters from the other books in the series do pop up frequently in other books.

And if you've read the previous books, you will know that Miss Eloise, Charlotte's sister, is engaged to marry Lord Pickington, a marriage arranged by her parents to make her a countess. Raised to be a proper lady and tasked to marry well, Eloise is set to do her duty and become the Earl's third wife but on the evening before her wedding day, her intended frightens her enough to where she shoves him away, then flees without looking back.

With nowhere to actually flee to and no money to flee with, she recalls a conversation from her dance with Lord Wycliffe - he's left this very night to travel because he sets sail for the continent in the morning. Surely she could seek refuge at his home since he won't be there, and buy herself time so she can figure out what to do next. The problem is, Alex Wycliffe hasn't left yet. Can he talk Eloise into returning home? Could someone actually have murdered Lord Pickington? Will Alex kidnap her to the continent?

This was a fun story and likely one of my favorites in the series. Lord Wycliffe is actually a cousin to Lord Pickington, but Eloise quickly learns that the two men are nothing alike. Even more, Alex and Eloise discover they have a lot more in common than they would have thought. When Eloise stows away in a large trunk strapped to the back of Alex's carriage bound for the ship, she suddenly reappears, leaving Alex little choice but to take her along. But a weather delay means a night at an inn before setting sail. Here Alex and Eloise talk, bond, confess, and ultimately Alex betrays her.

Instantly regretting his actions, Eloise returns home with her brother, and Alex goes to his parents home to come to terms with the ghosts from his past. But he can't forget about Eloise, nor she him. After making amends with her parents, and getting their agreement to set marriage for her aside for a time, Eloise accepts an invitation back home to attend an intimate gathering. With her Charm School friend Lydia in tow, they arrive just in time for Alex to make an grand entrance and attempt to claim the girl he loves.

This is a really sweet story that is almost 'the brother's best friend' trope except Alex and Eloise didn't harbor any feelings for each other before their little adventure. She's escaping an arranged marriage, and Alex doesn't really blame her. And the more they talk, the more brave he believes her to be, contrary to his initial impressions upon meeting her. I loved that Eloise will not admit that she swoons, even though she does. LOL. I really liked Alex in this story. He came off as just a really nice guy, not afraid to apologize, but also not too quick to judge. Now I'm looking forward to Lydia's story coming up next!

I give this one 4 stars. Chaste kisses and embraces only, as usual for this series.

Also at the end of this book (on Kindle), there is a link to Rodrick, Eloise's brother, and Fanny's story titled Charmed By Chance which is a series prequel to an upcoming School of Charm spinoff. I will return here to add my review when I have read it, as it is not listed yet on Goodreads.

For a quick easy regency romance, for a focus on character interaction with some independent growth, for dual POVs but mostly from the woman's perspective. Can totally read this as a standalone and not have read any of the other series book

Thoughts:
This is a really short book and you can see that in the story. It's very straightforward and really only has two parts: part one is her fleeing her engagement party, and part two is them traveling. Because of that it does move pretty quickly, which was fine by me as it kept a focus on their interactions and of course that's what I was here for anyway right?

This is mostly narrated from her perspective, but there seems to be one chapter every four or so that are from his. This gave it some variety, and of course made me smile when the front he shows to her reads very differently with his thoughts behind it.

Thankfully, this did not rely much on miscommunication or lying as the conflict for the story. If there was any, it was very brief and resolved almost immediately. I hate when the issue is just that people didn't say something or be honest. While the start of this is relying on insta love, the end of the story allows it to grow more so it feels more believable and mature. Even though they are both very young. xD

One question that didn't get answered until very far into the book that kept having me confused was why she was marrying the crappy old guy in the first place. They make it a point to say that she didn't fight it and she was along with the plan from the start, so I was very confused as to why when she was clearly not happy. It was hinted at a lot for the first half of the book and then we do eventually get more of an explanation from her but it wasn't a very good one honestly. Thankfully they resolved that, and I was able to just kind of look past it with a little bit of suspension of disbelief.

Since this is a short book, you can guess that there's not a ton of development or side plots. There was at least a little bit of time given to self-reflection and sorting out your own issues before trying to jump into a relationship. This feels like a very wise element to include since two people with issues of their own are often going to exacerbate if they try to solve each other's without solving their own first.

Overall I enjoyed this and it was very quick read at about two and a half hours on a sunny afternoon. Having a clean romance was refreshing, and it had several moments that made me smile.

This book opens up in the midst of Eloise in a physical and emotional struggle while standing next to her intended, on the eve of her wedding, holding herself up in the lifelong practiced stance of a smiling lady. Lord Pinkington is 3x's her age and proud to proclaim that finally his new bride (#3) is from good stock. Look pretty and bear children is all that he requires, and the title is all that her parents require. It was sad that they stole everything from her, she had no personality, no season out because she was spoken for already, and she was alone in this panicked state with not a single soul to hear, see or help her. When Lord Pinkington attempts to skip over the nuptials and take liberties somehow being roughly handled and being told he already owns her snaps her out of her shell and she finds strength to fight back and run. Which she fears might have caused his current state.
In her hasty exist she remembered Viscount Wycliffe saw he was leaving immediately for travel, so she went there to hide, think of a plan and hopefully find some coins to help finance her escape. She was only worried about scaring the help if the found her, but he found her. He was also a member of society that not only didn't care about her, didn't want to help her, was disappointed not because she ran but because she threw him into her problem putting his future at risk if they were found unchaperoned but also, she reminded him of his mother who was a shell of a proper lady that did nothing to protect them from his father.
Every time he thinks he can be rid of this dramatic situation he is pulled back in. While he softens and faces his past, she grows and faces her future. One night on the run reveals how much they have in common and how the connection is something neither wants to break. He has to betray her thwart her escape, but she does his as well. It was fascinating to see her so shaken and grasping to figure out who she is and what she wants in life.

Short (novella), so the character growth is very quick, the plot is very simple and shallow, and there wasn’t really time to get attached to the characters. It’s like a single tv episode instead of an entire movie. But they’re sweet and it’s an easy read if you want pick me up historical romance.

Miss Eloise has always done what her parents wanted. So she’s engaged to the terrible Lord Pickington, an elderly man who has already buried two wives. Her job is to marry him and produce an heir. But at a party on the eve of their wedding she meets her brother’s best friend, the grim but handsome Alex, and forces Alex to dance with her as she tries desperately to avoid her awful fiancé. Alex is the nephew of her fiancé, and she decides that although he’s handsome, being terrible must run in the Pickington family because Alex is clearly not happy at having to dance with her. Unfortunately, she can’t avoid her fiancé forever and ends up alone with him. He tries to kiss her and she’s so horrified she gives him a push and escapes. Out in the cold night she considers her options and decides that she can’t go back. She’s done being a dutiful and meek daughter. And, since she knows that Alex left the party and immediately set out on a lengthy trip his house will be the perfect place to hide while she formulates her future.

This is part of the School of Charm book series. It can easily be read as a stand-alone but if you’re reading the series it’s fun to revisit some of the other girls from the series who are in this book, too. This was a light, quick read as I took a break from reading another more serious book. There’s one more book in the series that’s coming out in the next few months and I’m looking forward to reading it, too.

The School of Charm series by Maggie Dallen is a sweet and satisfying collection of quick reads that are perfect for young readers starting to explore romance. Each story features lovable, relatable characters and follows a light, predictable arc—but in a way that feels cozy and comforting rather than stale.

What I appreciate most is how age-appropriate the content is. There's nothing more than kissing, and the relationships are respectful, kind, and rooted in good friendships. As a parent of tweens just beginning to show interest in romance books, this series has been a fantastic find. The stories provide just enough emotional depth and romantic spark without diving into territory they’re not quite ready for.

I’m giving the series 4 stars—not because anything was lacking, but simply because I usually reserve 5 stars for books I want to reread or that truly wow me. These are quick, sweet reads that I highly recommend—especially if, like me, you started with more intense romance novels at a young age (Flowers in the Attic, anyone?) and are looking for something gentler for your own kids.

Eloise has always been well behaved and sought to please her parents. She’s done well and secured a good marriage, and now all she has to do is follow through and bear him the desired heirs—unlike his other two deceased wives. Unfortunately, one the eve of her wedding night, things go terribly awry, and Eloise finds herself on the run with an unexpected companion.

** spoilers ahead **

This is a short, sweet, clean romance about a young woman who finds out she has more of her own thoughts and desires than she previously allowed. The setup was a bit silly, but the author (and the characters) seem to realize that—there is quite a bit of tongue in cheek teasing about what exactly Eloise is planning to do by running away. But given the situation, that is probably not unreasonable for the character.

It was interesting that they threw in a (maybe) murder as part of the romance. I personally am not convinced that Eloise didn’t contribute to her fiancé’s demise. But it was mostly his heart, so let’s not feel to guilty for the awful man.

I read this in maybe 2 hours. Recommended for those looking for a quick, light read.

The sweet, obedient Eloise discovers at the house party celebrating her wedding in the morning to the earl old enough to be her grandfather, that she is having symptoms of a panic attack and needs to excuse herself. But before she can escape, her fiancee is moving toward her. She loudly accepts an offer to dance (which he never offered) from Alex her brother's best friend and her fiance's nephew. When the waltz ends, he is off on his continental tour, and she is having a quiet moment in the library. When the earl comes in and begins forcing himself on her, she was able to push him back and when he hit the floor, she escapes out the back door. You won't believe where she walked to and began a grand adventure without a plan but with many misgivings. The Misplaced Miss Eloise is ruined!?! This was a great read: funny but with a few tears Miss Eloise cuts her marionette strings and becomes a 'Knight in Shining Armor.'

Charmingly quick escape

The story is sweet and quick, hitting all the cute feels of a historical romance. Give a read if you're looking for something quick and cute. The characters are well rounded, and you will root for Eloise, she is relatable and Alex is charming.

Why no 5 stars? There wasn't as much of a struggle for them to be together as I was hoping for. It felt like there really wasn't any obstacle for them at all. They meet, they see potential, they made a choice to accept it, and no obstacle. If just one circumstance kept them apart after he made the decision to see her again, I think it wouldn't have felt so unfulfilling for their adorable ending. Not knocking the story, the character grew and became stronger and faced the music so to speak. it just felt like it needed more for me. And it fast forwarded through their courtship, so it just felt abrupt to me.

Great writing, cute story, solid 4-star historical romance enjoyment.

I thought this book would be a lot better. I saw a reel on Instagram describing a scene in the book and thought it sounded so good. However, the advertisement was a lie- the scene and dialogue it portrayed didn’t even happen like that in the book!

It was a quick read and I read it within 3.5 hours, so because I was going through it so fast I didn’t bother to DNF it and just made it to the end.

The characters didn’t have much depth and in fact I felt that they were very back and forth with how they were feeling at any given moment. The first 75% of the book happens within about 24 hours, they’re indecisive about what they want, and within that very short time the characters realize they love each other but don’t want to say it because “its crazy.”

I’m just bummed that this wasn’t what I thought it would be and didn’t have the intensity and the swoon that I expected.

This was a book recommended by an ad on social media. Normally I don't click ads, but the ad hit me at the right time, I was looking for a regency romance, and the meet sounded fun. I know that this is book 8 in the series but Eloise's story was what made me click it so I figured I'd start there and I was not disappointed. A fun short read that I read in one sitting and it was much more enjoyable than what was on TV.

Typically I read longer stories with heavier plots, but sometimes light and sweet hits the spot. If I read this as an ARC I would've suggested adding a bit more in the middle because I would've been happy to read another 300 pages about her adventure! I understand that is probably not what the target audience is looking for but the buildup was great and I wanted to see them together, either on their own towards where her sister was staying or a bit more back at home. Great setup, I wanted a bit more, but that might be covered in other books in the series.

Eloise meets her brothers friend, Alex, Viscount Wycliffe, on the eve of her wedding to his uncle while experiencing a major case of wedding nerves or a panic attack. Eloise and Alex dislike each other based on what they each stereotype the other to be based on their own experiences. Both have learned to shut down their emotions from their childhood experiences with their parents. However, after Eloise becomes a Runaway Bride, Alex unexpectedly gets entwined with Eloise plans to visit her sister and aunt in Europe. I enjoyed reading this book as seeing Eloise in Charlotte and Mary's story with glimpses of who she might be beyond the obedient, pretty daughter engaged to a much older man. Reading this pairs story as they each end uncovering feelings from their past and towards the other made for a great read.

This is a quick clean regency romance that took me less than 2 hours to read. It was ok based on the length but still a bit ridiculous in how quickly they fall in love. Also, if she was so pretty and amenable why did her parents try to marry her off to an old man on his 3rd marriage? Usually if parents actually care for their daughter, they only arrange marriages like this if they are desperate for money or connections and don’t think their daughter could do better. It makes for a very unlikely scenario in my mind. I appreciate the attempt to show her growing a backbone and Alex wanting her to be her own person but again, it’s really quick and he clearly is moved by her beauty as well. It gets 3 star but only cause I figure since it’s so short it doesn’t give a lot of time for character development. Not sure I’ll read any of the others in the series.

"Yes, it was the start of a plan, at least. Albeit...not a very good one."

What a way to start a book, with a panic attack! Eloise was easy to relate to, and charming to boot. I do feel like the ads I read for this one, definitely painted Alex as much more of a rake than I believe is written in the book itself. His innate need to panic every time a woman cries around him is both endearing, and realistic. I adore Eloise's ability to problem solve for herself, and take the men around her completely by surprise every time. The teasing, inside jokes, and camaraderie were just the cherry on top to this swoony romance.

"You do not faint, you say?"
"No. I'm not prone to...to swooning."
"I'll be sure to tell the floor as much. I believe there's a dent there where you landed."

Felt like a really quick read. I loved the premise—it had a great hook. I think the relationship could have been drawn out a little bit more and the plot was lacking with it being such a short read. But I appreciated the character’s motivations, and it was the feel good read it was intended to be. I’m reading this series out of order, and while the main plot is written as a stand alone, there is definitely ample discussion about and references to what I assume are characters from the rest of the series.

DNF at 85%

It was a cute plot for the 1st half of the book, but the 2nd half seemed to drag on and on filled with secondary characters. That's probably my fault since I haven't read the other books in the series, but either way, I can't force myself to go on even this close to the end.
And to be honest, I didn't feel very much chemistry between the two main characters. The protective older brother was very sweet, though.

Sweet, short, easy Regency read. This was shorter than I’d expected it to be - just 166 pages. I usually like my books longer than this so the story has more time to develop, but short worked in this story. The characters were able to forge an emotional connection that felt genuine. I love dual POV and the author did a good job giving them different voices. Note this is clean and there’s not much sizzle.
