This is the 10th novel in the Utterly Crime Series featuring old friends Chrissie, Nick and Matt. It can be read as a standalone.
A body is found in the Poachers Basket - Wattisham’s disused village pub. But what seems like simple misadventure becomes a murder inquiry and DI Clive Merry’s investigation soon turns into a nightmare.
Can Nick’s preoccupation with an old musical box shed any light on the history of the pub? The past may hold clues, but the present-day investigation stokes increasing danger.
Pauline Manders’ signature quirky plot plays out with village thatching and cowboy boots under the long shadow of Wattisham’s wartime airmen. Bodies mount up and tensions erupt with dire consequences. The action moves between Wattisham and Woolpit, Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket, Needham Market and Shottisham Creek
Pauline Manders was born in London where she went on to train as an ENT surgeon. She moved to East Anglia with her husband and two children, where she worked for over 30 years before retiring from the NHS. She lives in rural Suffolk in a converted barn and gains inspiration for her crime novels by walking in the countryside with her Weimaraner, Otto. Since retirement, she has had time to write, pursue her shared interest with her husband in classic cars, and also attend a local carpentry group. She is still working on carving three diving ducks as legs for a small table - some projects are more of a challenge than others!

Readers’ Comments “Whoever thought Suffolk could be so dangerous! Enjoyed this story with it’s Midsummer Murders feel to it. A relaxing read; a sort of cosy mystery most readers will enjoy.” Male reader, aged 51 “Book number ten! Wow, that’ impressive. It’s so fun to find an author who develops her characters over a large number of novels. This is a fun story, dark in parts – but never too dark. Lots of twists and turns with strong character development.” Female reader, aged 39 “I read the first book a few years ago entitled Utterly Explosive. If I remember correctly, many of the characters in that book are in this. I must say, the three of them have developed a long way! I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys a well-plotted murder/mystery.” Female reader, aged 50 “Unpredictable, which is always important in this genre. Enjoyed it.” Female reader. Aged 40
To Sum It Up: ‘A thrilling murder/mystery set in deepest, darkest Suffolk! A FINALIST and highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
