Takema spends her days with her desert friends. Her best friend is Fennec Fox. His large ears make him a great listener, and all his friends like to come and talk to him. But then danger comes, and only Fennec Fox knows about it. Can Takema help her friend learn to share his voice?
Teach a special child the importance of listening, and speaking out, with this amazing story by Angela Castillo and world famous illustrator, Cher Jiang.
I loved this story which talks about the importance of using our voice when we have something important to say. Fennec Fox was shy and withdrawn, but one day when danger was impending he got the courage to speak up and warn his friends.
The illustrations and colours in this story are lovely, and lots of animal detail at the end too. I loved how the sandgrouse carries water to its chicks.
First, why the high rating? I could expand the beautiful pictures to fit my screen, something many picture books cannot do. This is terribly important to me, if I am buying a picture book on kindle. Otherwise, what’s the advantage of the cheaper kindle price? Second, the characters were unique and rather unknown quantities to me, but there are some very informative, short picture bios of each animal included in the back. Thirdly, the story flowed very smoothly and logically, and little fennec fox(underdog) learned what he has to say can be important enough to step outside his comfort zone. I will definitely want to share this book with my grandchildren as they get old enough. I have no problem with this not being a Christian book, except it was presented in a Christian book group. Therefore, slightly not what I expected. All in all, great book and highly recommended!
Lovely illustrations but uneven flow to the story…
I’ve been a fan of author, Angela Castillo’s, historical fiction for many years. “Takema and the Fennec Fox” is an young reader/picture book and quite a different experience for this reader!
Even if there were no words at all, the illustrations can and do tell stories by themselves; they’re spectacular. If you begin with the last few pages, you can introduce yourself and your young readers to the 8 animal friends that learn to listen to Fennec and be heard along the way. These short introductions will give many points for discussion.
For me, the weakest part of this book is the actual story telling. Takema and Fennec communicate fairly well between themselves but when adding other characters into circle, it’s disjointed and progress is VERY slow. The subtitle of this book is: “A Tale of Listening and Being Heard” and the book is only 20 pages long - I needed and wanted progress to happen more quickly so as to celebrate with Takema, Fennec and their friends; instead I was frustrated.
3.5 stars rounded up for the excellent artwork and concept📚
Fennec Fox hears his friends but has a hard time sharing his own experiences. Takema encourages him to find his voice. Castillo presents a delightful story. Jiang has brought excellent art and color to the story to help it come alive.
