Amidst Secrets and Shadows

Rate this book
Survival. Secrets. Shadows.

Faery is more beautiful and otherworldly than Arawyn ever imagined, but there’s a growing darkness in this land of magic and monsters…

After years of suffering under the cruel reign of brutal usurpers, what’s left of this realm is dark and twisted. Arawyn’s people and her land are hurting, but everything in her tells her she can save them if only she can tame her wild magic.

Taking refuge in the ruins of her father’s Kingdom, she trains under the intense instruction of Dommik, her crazed ex-assassin. As her power blossoms, so do her feelings for the darkly psychotic man. Every time he looks at her, his eyes burn with heat, igniting an answering fire within her.

But when Rathe is summoned to face the King along with Fear and Viper, she’s thrust into the wicked world of the Fae to face her enemies before she’s ready. Hidden in plain sight as Rathe’s slave, she’s left to traverse the intricacies of a Court she doesn’t understand.

One misstep will endanger not just herself, but her men.

Can she keep her identity a secret, or will the threats surrounding them force her to expose her power, spelling the end for them all?

From bestselling authors, Stacy Jones and Harper Wylde, comes the third book in the darkly seductive new series, A Court of Gilt and Shadow, blending romance, danger, and the supernatural into an unforgettable read.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5. Yep, I loved this. This is book 3 in a fantasy reverse harem series that everyone should read. It's such a good series. Side note: it is driving me crazy that the authors have not uploaded the book cover on Goodreads yet.

After waiting an entire year to get book 3 in this series, I am so happy that it was worth it. I was a little worried about halfway into this book because it seemed to be super heavy on the smut and pretty light on the plot. However, the ending was incredible. I couldn't put the book down for the last ~15%. My heart is still racing. It ended on a cliffhanger, but a good cliffhanger. As in, they won the battle at the end of the book, and are now escaping, but with the promise of war still looming over them.

I really like the female main character, Arawyn. She is so badass, but also is believably soft and vulnerable when the scene calls for it. I also think the authors do a great job of showing you that Arawyn is a badass without her having to tell the reader that she is badass over and over again (like so many other "badass" FMCs). I also really like all of Arawyn's guys. They are each distinct in their own way with their own personalities. My favorite is probably still Viper, but I think all of them have something special about them that makes me think they're each hot. She adds Dom to her group of men in this book, rounding us out to a total of 4 mates. I'm glad that Rathe had to grovel a bit in this book because what he did at the end of book 2 was fucked up. There are a ton of good smut scenes throughout this book.

This book mainly focuses on Arawyn finally arriving in Faery. She is first taught by Dom how to use her powers, and then she poses as one of Rathe's sex slaves so she can hide in plain sight when he is summoned back to the castle by his father, which is where the majority of the story took place. Of course, there are complications back at the palace because Rathe's dad is fucking psycho. He is such a good villain.

Finally, I really liked Nissa. Nissa is introduced in this book. She is the human changeling that replaced Arawyn as a baby when Arawyn was left in the human realm. Nissa has grown up in Faery thinking she is the real princess, despite having no powers, and she was raised by the evil king regent. As the princess, she has been betrothed to Rathe since childhood and has feelings for him. I was a little worried when Nissa was introduced that she was going to be vengeful and become a minor villain when she found out she is not actually the princess. I was pleasantly surprised that they did not end up pitting Nissa and Arawyn against each other at the end.

I'm REALLY hoping we don't have to wait another full year for book 4. I love this series, but I feel like I start to really lose steam on it when the books are spaced out so far apart. They're not particularly long books, so the waiting period kills me because I finish reading them in like a day!

Anyways, looking forward to seeing where they all end up and regroup after that final battle. I kind of hope that Fearson stays locked in his dragon form for awhile and becomes possessive of Arawyn as a dragon while being kind of animalistic (in a funny way) lol

ANYWAYS, people should read this :) it's a reaaally amazing fantasy/paranormal reverse harem series.

AMAZING!

I’m a little salty cause Amazon said this was book 3 of 3 and this ended on a cliffhanger! I make it a point not to read a series unless it’s finished or the last book is about to release. And I have no idea how many books are left in the series. BUT I absolutely loved this book. Heck, I’ve loved this whole series so far! I will be impatiently waiting for the next book. It’s gonna kill me!

Well then. 😫🤩
That was insanely good! So crazy action packed!
How the heck am I supposed to wait for the next book?!
This author duo has delivered once again. If you’re following this saga and liked the first 2 books, you will not be disappointed! Our princesses baddassery continues to evolve and our relationships continue to grow. This book is chalked full of devotion and adoration from these guys and I’m certainly here for it. I thought the relationships and steam in this book were excellent. Aaaaand the story with our new psycho friend is just ::chefs kiss::
I don’t want to give too much away, but the world building and action will keep you enthralled and on the edge of your seat. This isn’t the last book in the series, but I don’t feel like the cliffhanger was painful- I just really really want to pick up the next book!

Well this series is certainly something and none of it is something I love.

To be fairy this was better than book 1 and 2 in terms of pacing and story. The plot was good!

However, in book 2, two guys each did something really vile to the heroine. One betrayed her trust and the other broke her jaw (he was sent to assassinate her so fair enough I guess). The issue isn't what they did so much as the fact that there just were no visible, marked consequences.

The jaw breaking guy had hurt the heroine multiple times (and exessively, I might add) before he essentially saw her get angry and he recognized her as the rightful Queen. Then, he fell in love quite suddenly, and his transgressions were kind of never mentioned again lol :P

Rathe, who betrayed the heroine quite heinously, also got off the hook without the authors handling the complexity of a situation like that. I feel robbed from all the OTT drama that should've come after that fallout, but nothing. Honestly the very least would have been to banish Rathe for a year at least.

So yeah, I feel like the story always takes the easy way out and I don't like that. Also I was not fond of the glittery, Barbie-ish costume porn that was Arawyn's faeish glow-up.

If I have any restraint at all I'll just dump the series.

------

Pre-reading: I love Stacy Jones' heroines. They are their heroes' hype girls and the heroes always worship them to the moon and back.

That is not a dynamic any author can pull off. You have to be unironically corny and campy and filled with positive emotion to write the good stuff.

And I'm here to read it.

3.5⭐️ I really loved the first two books and maybe it’s because it’s been a while since I read them but didn’t hit as much as those for me. I was definitely entertained and it’s a fun easy read but I wasn’t overall underwhelmed compared to how much I remembered loving the first 2

I am so mad at myself because I didn't realize that this was an unfinished series. Kicking myself for the fact that I now have to wait for the next book when all I want to do is continue to read about these characters. The ending of this book gave me anxiety. I was freaking out the whole end of this book and my heart was just breaking so much. I just can't even process anything right now. Hopefully the next book is out soon (fingers crossed)!

the junk food of smutty KU fantasy romances. delicious for all the wrong reasons, but when the cravings hit, they hit, you know?

probably the best of the books in this series so far, with a cooler setting, interesting magic developments, and even better spice, but a muuuuuuch slower pace. these books are so short, so the slow pace doesn’t exactly feel as slow as it probably is — but i did find myself wishing for a little more action.

hot, easy to read (though skin-itchingly cringe at times — nothing LESS sexy than one of your boyfriends calling your other boyfriend ‘cookie monster’ during a spicy chapter), with enough actionable plot to keep me invested.

check out book 1’s review here, if a smutty why choose KU urban-ish fantasy romance sounds up your alley. or if you don’t mind cookie monster as a mid-coitus nickname.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This book picks up right where the last one left off. It took me a hot minute to get reacquainted with the world, the story and the characters, but once I did everything flowed beautifully. I originally thought that this was actually book 2, so I went back and re-read my previous review of the ACTUAL book 2, and that got me up to speed pretty quickly.

I loved the descriptions of Faery. There was enough detail to have you able to vividly picture the world and the creatures, but not too much that the story got bogged down in the details and the pacing suffered. It can be a fine line between these two things and these authors are great at walking it. The characters are the same ones that I adore and remember from the previous instalments and I loved that we got to learn a little bit more about them. Viper is still my favourite, but I'm loving the addition of the new guy as well. Rathe and Fear took a bit of a backseat in this instalment, and I really enjoyed it as the authors are allowing us to have longer and more in depth interactions with the different love interests so it feels like they're all getting decent screen time.

The story was, once again, well written and I loved learning more about Arawyn's history. Arawyn also really levelled up in this one which I enjoyed thoroughly, and I'm looking forward to seeing what she can do in the next one, which is also looking to be the finale of the series. It can be difficult to write a villainous character that is genuinely terrifying but these guys did a great job, the insanity and unstable unpredictability of Ehrendil was fantastic, and he's a character that you do not want to meet. The pacing moved along at a steady clip and kept the story moving which was great. The spice was fantastic and not too much, there was still a huge focus on the story itself and the character and relationship development aside from the spice, which I always enjoy.

This book does end on a cliffhanger, but it's not one that makes you want to rip your hair out, it's a cliffhanger that denotes the end of this "chapter" so to speak, and alludes to that which is ahead. These are the kinds of cliffhangers that I enjoy because it still creates anticipation for the next book, but it doesn't leave you with severe anxiety over what is happening.

All in all, a fantastic instalment to a series that I've thoroughly enjoyed since the beginning. If you've been reading along with the last two books, this one won't disappoint. And if you haven't read the first two books yet, I suggest heading back down the path and picking up book one. This is a fantastic fae fantasy world with amazing characters and it's just a genuine delight to read.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4!

This romantic fantasy series is severely underrated! It has adventure, fae kingdoms, witty banter/angst and a why chose romance all on top of a great plot featuring a badass FMC. Amidst Secrets and Shadows is book 3 in the A Court of Gilt and Shadow series and I loved every minute.

On a journey to reclaim the life stolen from her as a child and her rightful place as Queen, Arawyn travels to Faery under a guise with the help of her mates. One thing I particularly love about this series is Arawyn's personality, especially her determination. No matter what situation she is faced with she either finds a way or she makes one, but she never gives up. This trait in a character is so fun to read because you can never predict where the story will go or what kinds of situations the character will get into.

While I love everything about this world and its characters, I wish these books were 10x longer!! Although book 3 gave us our first glimpse of life in the world of Faery and the horrors of the Kings, I felt things were rushed, and I was left wanting so much more! I think if this series were finished and I was able to read every book consecutively, this series would easily be a 4.5-5 star for me. However, because the books are so quick and there is a wait time in-between each book release, I find it hard to become immersed in the world and reach that top-tier rating.

It has been a long wait for this book to come out and to be honest, I needed to brush up on what happened in the previous book before I continued. Thankfully I did, otherwise I would have been a bit lost in the story.

I do enjoy this series and this book certainly didn't disappoint with all the action and twists and turns that were going on. The relationships also have grown and deepened and I love Arawyn's relationship with Dom.

Be warned that this book does end in a cliffhanger and I'm not sure how many books are planned for this series but I have a feeling it is not going to be wrapped up in the next book.

Oh my damn. I just love this series so much.
Book 3 picks up immediately where the last one ended. If it’s been awhile since you read book 2, I suggest you at least refresh the last few chapters.
It started a little “slow” for some maybe, but it had to be. We are now entering Faery and some world-building must be done lol. It doesn’t last long at all and then you’re on a RIDE.
We all love the guys. You really get to know them and connect even more. I loved the relationship growth.
You would think one psycho-possessed mate would be enough for me , BUT ALAS! I’m in love with them both. I won’t say yet lol.
Something I really loved about this book, is that nothing is overly drawn out. This books stays moving. There’s always something lol. It was SO much but still not enough for my greedy little eyes.
Side note: I could NEVER read finish a book written in third person before this series. Book 1 reeled me in and it’s still the only books I can read as such. The writing is so well done.
I want to say so much but I’m strongly against spoilers lol.

A Court of Gilt and Shadow is one of my favorite series but gods the wait between books is gonna end me one day. It's like torture however Amidst Secrets and Shadows was beyond worth it.

Arawyn is doing great in Faery, connecting with her home has done wonders for connecting to her magic and Faery in general. I kinda forgot how Arawyn may be a badass but she has such a soft and kind heart. It shows a lot in this book but so does a much darker side but not without provoking. Arawyn is powerful and caring and very much a queen. I can't wait to see her get her kingdoms (queendoms?) back.

They are a group of five now, Arawyn, Viper, Fear, Rathe, and Dommik. Relationship-wise, things with Fear and Viper are great but things with Rathe had to be worked on however eventually they work out. A surprise comes in the form of Dommik, Viper's half-brother, the crazy Naga assassin who tried to kill Arawyn. The man has changed his tune, he's obsessed with Arawyn to the point he's willing to do anything for her. I mean the man admits to Arawyn that he's trying to get her to fall in love with him and he brings it. Dom has grown on me and I like that he's willing to put in the work. However, Viper is still my favorite with his manic feral personality. He's still dangerous AF, but there’s something playful about him, an unexpected innocence and vulnerability. I adore him and his sass which he most definitely brought in this one.

The story has finally moved to Faery. That means unique fae, beautiful vegetation, and enemies everywhere. Ehrendil, the King of the Light Court and Rathe’s father isn't only evil but he's insane. The proof was all around his court who turns out was a lot less comfortable with it than I would have thought because usually fae and nobility like that kinda thing but Ehrendil is too dangerous. Let's not forget Malgath, the Regent of the Dark Court, whose alliance with Ehrendil isn't as great as I would have thought it would be.

Things are bad in faery and have been for a while. I get a great understanding of all the things Rathe, Fear, and Viper have been dealing with. Trying to save what little they can and help however/whoever they can. Just mitigating the damage. Readers also get an up close and personal look at all the guys' pain. Fearsome homesickness, Rathe heavy burdens, all of Viper's trauma, and even Dommik's darkness. All of it was horrible but explained things so much more including how they all fit together.

Harper and Stacy have done a fantastic job with this series, Amidst Secrets and Shadows is just further proof of it. A monster romance that centers on the fae, a uber powerful mfc, wondrous detailed magic, and devoted mates are just a few of the keywords that light up my heart. Harper and Stacy decided to punish readers once again with a mind-blowing cliffhanger that left my heart aching. The wait for Upon Crowns and Bones is gonna be brutal but once again I know it will be worth it.

4.5 stars. My favorite reverse harem, I love this series. This one started off slow and I had to go back and read the last few chapters of book two to remember what was going on. Eventually the pace picked up. I appreciate that while this book used the mind control trope it was very brief and resolved quickly. I also appreciate that the main character, who we are told is one of the most powerful beings in Faery, is actually powerful! I can't stand when a book tells us its MC's are super powerful and then when it comes to a fight they lose instantly (looking at you Zodiac Academy). It's also the first time in a long time that a book actually made me blush 😂 I'm only sad I read this so quickly and now I have to wait SO LONG for the next one.

A good read, but I think it's my least favorite.

The normal RH tropes felt a bit more apparent in this one, and I found myself getting a little tired of them. I also found her losing as a slave a little tedious.

But the next book sounds promising and I'm sure I'll read it.

Mind Blowing

To say that I have been eagerly awaiting the third book in this series would be a severe understatement. I am deeply invested in this series and these characters and this addition only further cemented that. There is so much plot momentum in this book. There are the bright moments of wit and humor, the smexy and sweet chemistry, and some seriously suspenseful and intense scenes, and that ending!!! I was heartbroken thinking we were going to see events play out a certain way, surprisingly (and with not a small amount of relief) events played out very different than my theories and it was some of the best pages of this series so far. Woooeee! This book ended with my heartbeat in my throat, eyes wide, and a huge grin on my face. Book four is going to be epic and I AM HERE FOR IT!

The latest installment to A Court of Gilt of Shadow universe was well-worth the wait! I loved it. I was so excited about the newest character (considering how book 2 ended!), and love his personality in combination with the rest of the harem. Jones and Wylde are excellent writers and this book showcases that (no noticeable editing errors).

I don't know how I'm supposed to wait for the next book, but I'll figure it out because this series has quickly become a forever favorite in my library.

Edit: I will update with a more detailed review -post 3/25/23- because I just decided to do a series reread.

Didn’t hate it, but didn’t fully enjoy it.

1) It had been so long since I read the previous book that I was confused and took a bit to get plugged into this one. 2) Only the last 20% of the book held anything of substance to the plot. 3) The majority of this book is just Arawyn being overly powerful & having very little flaws, all while getting railed by a few strange yet delightful Fae dicks (side note: I still stand by that the authors discovered you can buy alien/monster dildos and decided to write a book about them).

I’m still enjoying this series as a whole, but this 3rd installment just felt meh to me.

Let’s Talk About Amidst Secrets and Shadows (A Court of Gilt and Shadow Book 3), heck the entire series is fiyah!

Okay, I need to start with this: I AM OBSESSED. Ms. Jones, if you’re listening, I’m begging😩 Book #4, please?! An ARC would make my entire life. 🥺

This series has been such a wild, addictive ride, and Amidst Secrets and Shadows gave me everything I needed: action, emotional moments, a fierce leading woman, and, of course, some deliciously dangerous men who hit all the right notes. So, let’s get it in!

The Plot
We pick up exactly where Book 2 left off. The pacing is perfection—fast enough to keep things exciting without feeling rushed. The stakes are higher, the danger is closer, and we get to learn so much more about Arawyn’s past, which I absolutely loved.

The balance between action, emotional depth, and spice is chef’s kiss. The romance feels meaningful, never forced, and the plot is driven by the relationships—not just the steamy moments (although, trust me, those are fantastic too).👌🏽

The Characters
Let’s start with Arawyn. She’s everything I want in a main character—strong, resilient, but still vulnerable and relatable. Watching her grow and face new challenges in this book was so satisfying. Oh, and her cat? A-hole might just be my favorite side character. Someone write that novella on what had happened to A-hole!🤣🤣🤣

Now, the men.

Viper: My top pick. He’s unhinged, intense, and that dark edge? Swoon.
Dominic: Close second. Brooding and alpha in all the best ways.
Rathe & Fear: They take a slight backseat here, but I appreciated that. It gives each love interest their time to shine, and it makes the dynamics feel more natural.
The New Guy: No spoilers, but he’s a great addition to the team, and I can’t wait to see how he shakes things up. (wink)
Let’s not forget Ehrendil, the villain. Writing a villain who’s genuinely unsettling is hard, but wow, did they nail it. He’s the kind of unhinged that keeps you nervous every time he’s on the page.

The World-Building
Faery is so beautifully described—vivid, dangerous, and immersive. The authors strike the perfect balance between detail and pacing. I could picture every scene without ever feeling bogged down. It’s a world full of beauty and darkness, which makes it the perfect backdrop for Arawyn’s story.

The Spice
Let’s be real: the spice here is top tier. 🔥 But what makes it so good is that it’s never just there for the sake of it. The relationships, the emotional connections, and the tension all build up naturally. The steamy moments feel like a payoff for everything the characters have been through together, and that makes them so much more satisfying.

That Cliffhanger
Yes, there’s a cliffhanger, but don’t worry—you won’t be throwing your Kindle across the room. It’s the kind of ending that leaves you wanting more without making you feel cheated. Just enough tension to build excitement for what’s next.

Final Thoughts
This book—this series—has it all. Action, emotion, incredible characters, and swoon-worthy romance that feels both steamy and heartfelt. If you’re already a fan, Book 3 won’t disappoint. And if you haven’t started yet, do yourself a favor and grab Book 1 immediately.

Quick Recap:

Arawyn: Tough, relatable, and the perfect FMC.
The Men: Dark, sexy, and completely addictive.
The World: Stunning, dangerous, and vividly alive.
The Spice: Perfectly done.
Now, seriously… where’s Book 4? I need it. Like, yesterday.

Happy reading, friends!

I was really looking forward to continuing this series but I had a hard time reading this one. My main gripe is that there was so much potential for the plot, which was set up decently in the previous books, but things fell apart because of the spice.

There are a lot of plot points that could’ve been addressed better but were barely touched on. For instance, we had a chance to truly understand the backstories of Rathe and Viper, and even Dommick to a lesser extent. While we got to see some hints of it, I was left feeling like I wanted to know more about these character’s pasts.

Some of the plot points that were carried through from the previous book felt like they weren’t properly addressed either. One example is the fallout after Rathe dug through Arawyn’s mind; they barely spoke about it and yet she forgave him because she knew he felt guilty?

We also got to meet the villains in this one but one was dismissed as “mad” (big pet peeve of mine in fantasy novels when used as the reason why the bad guy is so bad) and the other was unimpressive and easily fooled/defeated.

Relationship development between the leads is important in any why choose novel, but the pacing of the story is also important in fantasy novels. It felt like the authors sacrificed one for the other here. And I’m saying this as someone who enjoys spice in the books I read. I get that the authors were trying to develop the romances between the heroine and the love interests but substituting meaningful interactions and conversations with smut and internal monologuing made the story drag.

The last few chapters of the book, which is when the plot starts picking up, pulled me in and kept my attention through to the end but had me wishing that this series could be rewritten to make it more plot-based.

There was so much potential here and with some reworking on pacing and less emphasis placed on spicy scenes (or really, just better placement of these scenes), we could’ve had an amazing story.

I’ll read the next book when it comes out - the authors mentioned it will likely be the series finale so I’m interested to see how they wrap everything up. I wonder if they’re ever going to get back to the guy mentioned in the first book who was Arawyn’s friend but disappeared randomly? I can’t remember his name right now but he seemed important.

Can’t Wait For Next Book ❤️❤️❤️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Review

Another phenomenal addition to this amazing series by two very awesome authors. I swear each book just gets better and better. I seriously can’t get enough of this series and am not looking forward to it ending. Thankfully it continues on a little bit longer!!!

We pick up right where we left off in book two on the other side of the veil. She and her men take refuge in the ruins of her fathers Kingdom and it’s here Dommik her ex-assassin begins training her. Faery is beautiful beyond anything Arawyn ever imagined but her people and her land are hurting and there’s a darkness that’s growing and causing it to be dark and twisted. Can she save what’s left? Can she tame and control her magic in order to do so? This is the beginning of her story in a new realm and one you have absolutely got to read.

This third book will have you on the edge of your seat all the way thru it. There’s lots of action, we get to see some serious connection growth between Arawyn and Dom, a deeper look into Rathe and Viper, intense character growth for everyone, suspense, steamy , and so so much more. Don’t even get me started on Fear, he just needs to be back to being him in the next book. Ends on a cliffy and I am seriously awaiting the next book in series. This is a series I will always highly recommend it’s absolutely phenomenal in every way.

This is a hard book and series to review. It was so hot and cold. Loved it and was so bored! Maybe the two authors had a part to play.

Arawyn and viper are my favorites. Viper is so cute and I love him. Rathe is moody and great, fear is the protector. DoM..

I somehow didn’t think that they would turn Dom into a love interest. At the end of the second book I was like “no, surely that’s not what’s happening” but it was. And what’s worse is In This book arawyn should be fixing the connection with rathe, since he betrayed her in book two… he should be groveling and she should be spending time with him. But no. Dom, the guy who tried to kill her, is the new love focus.

I’ve read some things, I’ve seen enemies become lovers. But In this book it’s done sooo badly. Dom went way to far over the line in book two kidnapping her and mutilating her, stabbing her and basically killing her. But he finds out she’s a queen and falls in love?? And she’s okay with it? Like it was so bizarre and the fact that she just accepted him so quickly was weird.

The writing is very shallow. I liked the characters well enough. I liked the story. But it all seemed flat. Like eh, whatever happens, happens. I want that tension, the nail biting kind of story.

Overall if you’re looking for an easy fantasy read with some good sexy times this will be fine for you.

I want to finish a book and wonder how I could find anything better.

I'm really torn on this one. I definitely have to say I liked the flow of the first two books more than this one. At one point the book became more spice than plot, which is fine if that's what you plan to read but the first two books have a better ratio.

**spoilers**

Once shit started to go down at court that spice to plot ratio got better but I have to say I feel like we really missed out on the development of her connection with Dommik. We got to see her feelings grow between the other men in the first two books but with dommik that wasn't explained really and then suddenly he's eating her out in a closet.

Another thing I kind of yearned for was all of the action that was packed into the last bit of the book. It was great! It was written so well, so descriptive, I was really getting into it. And then it was over. She held so much hatred towards malgath and then killed him within what 2 pages? Her mother's power that's been held captive for 25 years was released and 2 sentences goes by and that's just forgotten about? There could've been so much more on this whole scene.

But then the story is ended, again, on a pretty perfect cliffhanger. I don't know what's coming next but I also don't want to claw my eyes out while waiting for the next book, which is the perfect amount of anticipation for me.
