How to Become a Pilot - Demystiflying: Demystiflying: How to Become a Pilot for Those Who Don't Speak Pilot

Rate this book
You can learn how to fly and become a pilot of your own adventure. It's not too late. You don't have to change your life direction. People from all walks of life have become pilots, and not just through the military or the airlines. In Demystiflying, Kine Paulsen tells you what you need to do in order to become a pilot by going inside the minds of more than 200 pilots. Paulsen deciphers the meaning behind even the most basic pilot terms and concepts to encourage everyone to give flying a try. This is pilot 101 for anyone who doesn't speak pilot. The book is for those of us who didn't grow up hanging out at the airport or flying flight simulators. This book is for you who are considering pursuing your pilot license, who might be curious about what it is like to be a pilot or you may have already logged some hours. Or maybe a gift to someone you're close to who has talked about getting into the cockpit but is not sure how to. If you're already a pilot, it should be exciting to reflect on how much you had to learn to get to where you are today. This book is not meant to replace any educational tools, but simply to motivate and inspire. Paulsen did not spend her childhood dreaming of being a pilot, but chance had it she started her pilot journey in her mid-20s. Like many before her, she was overwhelmed by the amount of information, money issues, and scheduling aspect and stopped after only flying for a few hours. When she started years later, she was looking for a book to ease back in the process hoping she could learn some technical terms, and procedures and read about other pilots' challenges. She found many great resources, but confused by the jargon she found herself even more intimated to get back at it. Her obsession with understanding the aviation world turned into Demystiflying , an entertaining book to prepare anyone for the first meeting with the cockpit. She was excited to learn that most pilots question whether they are cut out for the challenge. Others also got confused at first. And was surprised by how exciting pre-1940 aviation history books were. Featuring interviews with hobbyists, influencers, and aviation experts, Demystiflying is the ultimate guide to understanding the world of aviation in an entertaining and non-technical way.

I've always loved flying and ever since I was young, the idea of becoming a pilot has attracted me. Before Kine took the time and all of the effort to research and write this book--oh, and learn to fly herself-- I was always too intimidated to consider learning to fly seriously.

Ms Paulsen's Demystiflying is easy to read, easy to understand and inspiring. She has gone way above and beyond (little flying pun) to find pilots, experts and aviation's upper echelon to gather all of the information anyone would need to learn about becoming a pilot.

If Kine Paulsen writes another book like this, I'm getting it. Knowledge is power...empowering and she has a rare talent for making intimidating subject matter palatable.

Kine Paulsen has created something that I would have loved to read as a teen who was interested in aviation but didn't grow up in an aviation family/community. She connected with, and quotes, dozens of accomplished leaders in aviation to provide a plain-language introduction to our world, and offers a great overview of the various paths to becoming a pilot, how to find the right instructor, what to expect, etc. It's a quick and easy read but full of useful information. I would recommend this to anyone who showed an interest in aviation and was ready to go for a discovery flight. It would have benefitted from one more round of edits for syntax and punctuation (which explains the 4 out of 5 stars) but they're minor and do not detract from the content . . . P.S. Love the air traffic control BINGO page. Might use it for fun ;-)

If you have ever thought about learning to fly, this book is for you! Kine Paulsen's enthusiasm and keen insight into what keeps people out of the cockpit enables her to gently coax even the most hesitant pilot aspirant into seeing just how possible it is for anyone with the interest and motivation to learn to fly. She walks the reader through all the fears and pitfalls, but also the joy and personal fulfillment that is available to anyone with any level of interest, from hobbyist to fighter pilot. In plain (plane?) language, Kine shares her own journey, the ins and outs of becoming licensed, and great stories from interviewing countless pilots from all generations and walks of life. Demystiflying is informative, inspiring and an obvious labor of love. Kudos to Kine!

Fine I guess

The author seems like a nice person and I can tell she put a lot of effort into this book, but it reads like it was written by a college freshman.

I got some good information out of it, but I imagine there are better books for people interested in flying.

Good info for someone looking to become a pilot. However, the book needed a more proficient editor and proofreader.

The push and guidance I needed

After finding myself more and more curious about aviation as a passenger on commercial flights, I’ve put more serious thought into obtaining a private pilots license lately. This book is exactly what I needed!! I’m currently a nurse with no prior knowledge on aviation and this book does a great job at covering the basics to get started. So grateful that the author, Kine Paulsen, stuck with writing this book for people like me! If you’re new to aviation or wanting a baseline to get started, this is a must buy!
