A short board book by Jonathan Allen that depicts a young yak preparing for winter. Moving around the fields, this yak learns how other animals prepare for the coming cold and wonders if he, too, should be doing this. Reporting this back to his mother, the little yak wonders what yaks do to prepare for winter. His mother has a wonderful surprise for him, perhaps the best winter plan of all. Neo loves winter and while he would love to do many other things, he is happy to stay in the snow and discover all the wonders of the cold. He did ask me if we needed to prepare for winter yet, but I asked that we let the summer warmth be our only concern for now.
Love this cute little story! A little yak learns what his friends do for winter, all the while questioning how yaks get ready for the cold temperature. Twist! They don't do anything... They simply snuggle in their herds and enjoy the falling snow. Highly recommend for story time. Perfect for 3-5 year olds.
Sometimes I love books because of the discussions they can prompt and the concepts we can teach and learn. I love how this book teaches that everyone cares for their needs in different ways and that's okay. And each person has different benefits from the way they care for their needs.
Cute story with three repetitive cycles that create a calming bedtime read. I do wish the animals were not all male as I'm quite sick of the default "he" when it comes to animals in kids' books, but I switch it up when I read.
Title: When The Snow Comes by Jonathan Allen Summary: A little yak wonders what yaks do in the snow and during a beautiful snowfall he finds out. Age: 3-6 years Rating: Yes Pros: The author does an excellent job of highlighting the innocence of a small animals first snow. The illustrations are large and colorful, making the easy to use for group sharing. The book highlight the way different animals prepare for winter. Cons: There are better versions of this type of story; by this I mean stories of animals experiencing their first winter. A Kitten Tale by Eric Rohmann is one. Usage: This book would work for preschool story time or even Kindergarten story time. One-on-one sharing also works.
A darling story about a little yak who wonders what yaks do "when the snow comes." As he asks his other animal friends what they do, we learn about their winter habits, and that yaks do not have those same habits. At the end, Little Yak finally learns what yaks do in winter. Endearing story that is great for younger children, but could also be enjoyed by older ones. Part of our unit on winter in our home preschool.
Cozy winter book, and nice to see a different set of animals than the North American ones many of us are used to. When the snow comes, Pika gathers grass and hides, Brown Bear hibernates, Blue Thrush flies away, and Little Yak snuggles close to his mom. Include this with other winter animal read-alouds.
Jack loved this book. It is a very cute story and the illustrations are wonderful. However, the end of the book feels off to me. It sems like it would read better if the last two pages were switched, but that is just my opinion. All in all, I would say that this is a good story for kids ages 2 and up. Would be good for a toddler story time.
A good story time book. I love that I can count on Jonathan Allen. I love the illustrations for this one in particular. They really helped to springboard a discussion on yaks and prompted a little more research into this animal rather than a plain story time on snow. The preschoolers and I had a great time with this deceptively simple book.
Little Yak is excited about seeing snow for the very first time. All of Little Yak's friends are busy preparing for winter--but what do little yaks do when the snow comes?
This is the second Jonathan Allen book my little one and I have read, and I really like how he combines entertainment, education, and repetition. It was really precious book, and I love little yak and his mommy cuddling at the end.
Good storytime selection for young children. Has repetitive elements that children like. The Yak is an exotic animal and will peak the kids curiosity. Authentic in detail
This short book shows how a little yak isn't sure what he is supposed to do when the snow comes. He asks his friends which tell him that they either hide, hibernate or fly someone warm when the snow finally comes. So baby yak runs back to his mother to ask if they also do those things, when she tells him they don't he then wants to know what he is supposedto do. She tells him that they stay put, their shaggy fur will keep them warm when the snow falls. Baby yak tells his mother how they are so lucky to be able to stay and see the snow when other animals are forced to leave. This book shows children how different animals handle the winter months.
