Billionaire Next Door #2

The Billionaire's Best Friend

Rate this book
You ever meet someone and have that immediate click? That was Kayla and me. First day of our first teaching jobs and we both just knew we were going to be best friends forever.

And we are.

She does a great job keeping me down to earth—a skill I appreciate even more now that I’m a billionaire.

Except lately, it’s like she’s pulling away.

It started with her spending more time with my sister instead of hanging out with me. And now it feels like I’m in danger of losing a lot more than my best friend and I don’t know how to make it stop.

All's well that ends well

Honestly, this isn't my favorite trope. The whole, "we've been friends forever and I'm secretly in love but too chicken to say anything" makes me roll my eyes a bit. I love Elizabeth Maddrey's novels, though, so I gave it a whirl.

I was frustrated with Austin, because seriously, if your entire friend group was telling you someone had feelings for you, how hard would you really protest in real life? It's like he was trying to be clueless on purpose. Then Kayla frustrated me with the whole, "I want to be pursued" thing. She wasn't in love with an alpha male who was going to throw her over his shoulder like a caveman. She was in love with a math teacher.

Anyway, thankfully none of that lasted too long, and I actually ended up really liking Kayla and Austin as a couple. They're nerdy and cute. I also appreciated that the whole love triangle aspect wasn't as ridiculous as they normally are. I kind of inwardly groaned when I realized there was going to be one, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it wasn't over the top dramatic and Maddrey didn't go with the almost inevitable "the other suiter is a jerk" reason for blowing someone off. Luke ended up being another likeable character.

I also love the setting in this series. So many Christian romances are small town or cowboy romances. It's refreshing to read a series that takes place in a bigger city.

This was a clean read with no swearing, a chaste romance with only kissing, and enough Christian content for me to label it Christian and not merely clean. I can't say enough how much I appreciate that Maddrey has her characters living their faith out in her novels and not merely having them talk about prayer or church and calling it good.

Overall, I recommend this to anyone who enjoys sweet Christian romances and the best friends trope.

Best friends to more are some of my favorite tropes and The Billionaire's Best Friend did a great job of making the trope feel realistic. I also loved the added bonus of seeing people from book 1 and knowing that there will be more books to come in the series. There were moments to laugh, moments to highlight (usually b/c I laughed), moments to smile, and moments to cheer. Elizabeth Maddrey continues to be one of my must-read authors.

Another “billionaire” story by Elizabeth Maddrey!
YAY! I’m loving these fun books! It’s fun to think about the human side of these guys. Yes, they are all just like us, except they happen to have a lot of money. They have the same emotions and desires to help others as we all do. I love being able to relate to them in this way.
Money doesn’t have to be the main thing or make a person lay around eating bon-bons all day long. In these stories, the author shows the human side of the characters and all their struggles.
A crazy opportunity that changed the lives of all these guys and now they are having to know how to deal with all the unseen pressures they come across.
In this story, throw into that whole mix of stuff, a long-lasting friendship that changes, and find out what true friends are.
The way Elizabeth Maddrey weaves this story together is so tender and delightful. I was intrigued by the main characters and their struggles with finding love and was delighted by all of the friends who I’m sure we’ll see later. I read this book in one day and didn’t want it to end. This story brought a smile to my face and warm fuzzies to my heart.
If you enjoy romance and fun books then you’ll like this story. I highly recommend you pick it up.
I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

So, I’m not exactly a fan of the billionaire trope. In fact the only other billionaire romance that I can recall reading is the first one in this series by the same author and I absolutely loved it. This one as well. So, really, how can I say I don’t like billionaire stories? I guess because I have (maybe had?) a preconceived notion of the sheer arrogance and entitlement and men-behaving-badly cliche, which, sadly, isn’t always a cliche. At least, not the billionaires who make the headlines. But Maddrey’s billionaires are anything but! They are more ‘the boy next door’ type — hence the clever series title, “The Billionaire Next Door.”

The series centres around ‘regular guy’ friends who just happened to make it big through their joint investments. Like billionaire big. But they’ve kept that on the down-low and have just gone about their lives like normal…more or less. Like Austin with his beat up old car and his math teacher career, palling around with his best friend, Kayla (and yes, she knows he’s a billionaire, but it doesn’t phase her because they have that bestie bond.) Kayla teaches computer science at the same school as Austin so these two spend a lot of time together — inside and outside of work.

I may not be a billionaire aficionado but I sure am when it comes to ‘best friends to more’ romances! Eeeeep — this one is fabulous! Maddrey captures the depth of the friendship, from serious heart to hearts to playful teasing…but, oy, what happens when the teasing turns to banter and the ‘love you like a friend’ vibe starts to morph into something more…well…more?! Sheer reading delight, that’s what!

There’s all that delicious tension as both Kayla and Austin wrestle with their growing feelings. Well, actually, Kayla has been crushing on Austin for some time now, but she’s not-so-cleverly kept it well hidden from him. Because when Austin begins to see Kayla in a new, more romantical light, he’s positive she has him firmly in the friend zone. Oh, the agony of watching these two sort out their feelings! Not without angst, but it’s not over the top and there might look like a hint of a love triangle developing but it really isn’t so do not fear (says the LT averse reader with great relief.)

One of the aspects that I really loved about this novel, is the way Austin’s billionaire status is addressed. All the pros and cons and unique struggles that come from wealth. I don’t want to say much more than that, because it’s a very strong plot element but I appreciated the deliberation that Austin placed on his financial stewardship in relation to his faith.

And, oh the emotions churning around in my gut the whole read through! Love when an author makes me feel my way through a story and Maddrey definitely did that!

I listened to the audible edition narrated by Emma Faye and Joel Simler — really enjoyed the dual narration and these performers captured the heart of these characters and their story perfectly.

Austin and Kayla's love story is breathtaking.  They met as high school teachers before Austin became a Billionaire. His friend Scott and his 5 friends got in on a stock market deal. He is a math teacher and she is a computer science teacher. They are best friends. She has been in love with him for years. She hasn't told him because she wants him to realize it. When Luke, the youth pastor asks her out, his friends tell him that she is in love with him. He realizes he loves her, too and asks her out. I love a book with a wedding in the epilogue. Elizabeth has developed all the friends in this series so that they have become our friends. Austin shifted. His lips brushed across mine. My eyes drifted closed. I lost myself in the kiss. I believed God was sovereign and that He watched over me, and cared for me, and would help me walk in His will.
Austin said to Kayla "You're the only one I want by my side. You're going to marry me, right?" She said "You haven't asked me". "I'm asking you now. Will you? Marry me?" She said "Of course I will."
Home. It was less about a place and more about Austin. That was something only God could have done. And He had.  Because He was good. Always.

Elizabeth has written another fascinating book about being a high school teacher, being best friends, becoming a Billionaire and of course falling in love. I recommend this book and all of Elizabeth's books to everyone.

Kayla and Austin have been best friends for years. They’ve been working together in the same school and they both love math, but could there be something more for them than just being best friends?

I love this book. It’s funny how much I relate with these two SO MUCH. They’re teachers, nerdy, love math and I am too. Reading this book was a comfort to my soul. I know what it’s like to be a math teacher (because I am!) and understand their complaints about parents (because ironically, the hardest part of being a teacher is the parents, not their children). Now I’m just ranting about my life 😅, but yes, this was a fun realistic story to read. So thank you author.

Again just like in the previous book, I admire the men's comradery, praying and reminding each other to pray and show their love by asking if there are things they can pray about together. Now, the friends to lovers and love triangle part was OK, quite expected. Another guy shows up in Kayla’s life, Austin finally notices Kayla’s feelings and starts seeing her in a different light. Overall, this one was not as exciting as the first book (at least for me), but it was still a good read. Finally a nerdy CR book that I can totally relate to 😂

Loved Austin and Kayla's story!! Austin and Kayla have been best friends ever since Kayla started teaching at the same school with Austin. Kayla's been in love with Austin almost as long, and is sure he's going to permanently relegate her to the friend zone. So, when Luke, the youth pastor at their church, calls and asks her out, she accepts. Austin is NOT happy that Kayla is going out with Luke. Austin realizes that he's going to lose Kayla if he doesn't step up the plate, and fast. When it comes out that Luke is a billionaire, is that going to tear him and Kayla apart, or will they be able to hold on to their love?? Love this friends to more!! Loved catching up with the rest of the gang, and meeting Jenna!!

I received a complimentary copy of this book, was not required to leave a review, and the opinion expressed is my own.

author forgets her own plot points

I’m 14 chapters into this second book in the series. I like them well enough but the author loses plot points pretty big throughout. In chapter 3 Austin and Cody talk about Cody dating Austin’s sister Megan. Austin is surprised at first but not oblivious and highly encourages Cody to ask her out. 11 chapters later it’s like that conversation never happened. Austin ‘almost can’t keep his jaw from dropping’ at the idea, and claims he’s never given it much thought. And then he’s wishing to rewind to the beginning of the year because things like this are complicating his life. Huh? I mean I’ve seen typos proofreaders have missed un books but this is a major continuity error. Really takes the reader out of it. I’ll keep going for now but this isn’t giving me a lot of hope for the rest of the series.

The Billionaire's Best Friend is book 2 in Elizabeth Maddrey’s Billionaire Next Door series. It will be of benefit to read book 1 first (The Billionaire’s Nanny), as the characters are introduced there. I really enjoyed Maddrey’s excellent job of making the billionaire character believable and likeable, and very down to earth. She also does well at showing how suddenly having a lot of money can really impact every aspect of life when the newly rich person doesn’t want to make a big deal of the wealth, but wants to be a good steward of it and live a life pleasing to God. All Maddrey’s billionaires are down-to-earth and relatable, and don’t go around wasting money or living exotic lifestyles. I’m looking forward to the next book!

How does God move Kayla and Austin into a New Direction?

I ❤️ that Best Friends Austin and Kayla are Public HS Teachers in a poorer part of Town, in Elizabeth Maddrey's Engrossing, Contemporary, Christian Romance "The Billionaire's Best Friend (Billionaire Next Door)". I ❤️ed the real, believable Characters, & the Washington DC suburb Setting.

EM Poignantly explores how God allows some Christians to remain Single for Life, & others to be Single for A Season.

Change isn't always easy, & can come suddenly. How does God open Austin's eyes to see Kayla in a 💗 way? What does Austin do then? How do Kayla and Austin's friends and family help? I Highly Recommend You 📖 this Great, Novel, to Find Out?

This Story is best understood, if you 📗 the Series in Chronological Order. ❤️📖ing ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I loved Elizabeth Maddrey’s first book in this series so much, I immediately borrowed this one. It did not disappoint. Kayla and Austin are extremely smart and love teaching high school math and computer programming, however, their social smarts are lacking. It was really fun to watch them realize they were best friends and beyond that they really “liked” each other. Kayla is determined to not let Austin spend his newfound billions on her and he’s determined to remain a high school teacher and to figure out how to spend his wealth on others. I really enjoyed this story and hate waiting for Book 3.

Fell Flat

I have enjoyed another book by Elizabeth Maddrey, but I’m sorry to say that this one didn’t do it for me. This story had a lot of characters who were full of negative attitudes, and it got old fast. I skipped a lot of the book as I also felt too bogged down by all the mundane details. I would recommend checking out Maddrey’s books, “Second Chance at the Seaside” instead.
I also wish the epilogue in her books would focus on the couple the story was written about to give a more complete finish to the hea. Instead, the few books I’ve read use the epilogue to introduce the next book in the series, and it just isn’t satisfying to me.

"The Billionaire's Best Friend" was another delightful read by Elizabeth Maddrey. Its entertaining page-turning plot was filled with spirituality, friendship, and romance. I really liked the storyline of a billionaire high school math teacher making a difference by making a learning center happen for students who could use extra help. Moreover, the protagonists, Kayla and Austin, who had been best friends forever, found romance and gushed with chemistry. I adored the narrative.
I received an advanced copy for free. I am voluntarily giving my honest review.

New Cast of Characters to Love

If you're a fan of Maddrey's contemporary Christian romance novels, you probably love the interconnected crew of friends, siblings, church connections and, of course, love interests. The new connections in her Billionaire Next Door series are wonderful and a delight to get to know. In book 2 we have two best friends who finally - finally! - get together. And the false starts and tension and side-trails are fun and interesting and ultimately satisfying as one of the billionaires follows his heart at last. A good read and satisfying story.

This is my voluntary review of a copy I received from the author.

Great characters
The story was relatable because of the well done characters. Yeah, the guy is loaded, but that was kinda by accident. His friends and life really haven't changed... until word gets out.

The girl? She's been friends with Austin and his sister for years... in love with him almost as long. Maybe it's time to face the fact that he'll never see her that way, though...

The Billionaire's Best Friend is a sweet, heartwarming, best friend's to more romance. I love Ms. Maddrey's books and especially these men who became billionaire's nearly overnight. Kayla and Austin are amazing teacher's and friends. Austin gets a wake up call when Kayla starts dating the youth pastor. Watch all these characters as they try to follow God's will for their lives. I always just clear my calendar when there is a new book in this series. I cannot put them down!

The second book in the series and it already feels like I'm coming back to visit friends! I would never have thought I'd like the "billionaire romance" genre but Elizabeth Maddrey has changed that. And of course, friends to lovers would be a favorite trope of mine... In other words, give this series a try even if you don't think it will be your cup of tea.

I enjoyed this book. This author has a special talent for writing about Christian singles and friend groups and that talent was on display in this book. I really enjoyed having the story told in first person from three perspectives. I liked that the billionaire was a math teacher. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Adversity to victory

It was difficult when his secret was revealed that he wanted to remain anonymous so that he could continue to teach as his passion was to educate young minds. The reveal made that impossible. But his love for Kayla was reciprocated and together they made lemonade out of lemons.

Kayla has loved Austin for years, but he doesn't seem to see her as anything more than a best friend. And given that she'd really like to be married and have kids of her own rather than just teaching other people's kids, maybe it's time to try looking elsewhere. Austin has been best friends with Kayla almost ever since they met, but when she starts to pull away and his friends make comments, he begins to wonder whether he might be missing something. But can the pair successfully move from 'friends' to 'more' when he's still trying to sort out his own life?

I wasn't thrilled when I saw a third person's point of view coming into the story, because love triangles aren't really my thing - it feels like someone necessarily misses out. In this case, though, I was pleasantly surprised at how the author handled it and felt that it not only worked well but really added depth to the story. With most of the author's billionaire romances, money doesn't feel like it comes into things much, which I like. In a way, this book is a departure from that, but it's done in a way I really appreciated - showing both a desire to do good with the money rather than either hoarding or wasting it, and also presenting a bit more of the potential negatives. All in all, a really good read, and I'd even recommend it to those who (like me) normally avoid billionaire romances.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

Billionaire romances are so fun, add the best friend trope in the mix.. it’s the perfect read. The Billionaire’s Best Friend was a delightful story that I couldn’t put down. I loved the appearances of people from book one and I can’t wait for the next book! A clean romance that I recommend.
