The Dragon Chronicles #1

Learning: Lighter, sweet paranormal romance

Rate this book
What if the maiden is the dragon?

All rational beings believe dragons are mere myths, including elf professor Dr. Lindy Veles. After meeting attractive Dr. Alex von Schreider—a surly professor from a bear shifter family who possesses plenty of paranormal power yet can’t shift—life starts to spiral downward.

Alex thinks the new elf professor is cute, until he catches Lindy's strong shifter scent. Everyone knows elves don’t shift. Right? Still, Alex finds the compelling elf’s denials suspicious. Lindy thinks he’s crazy to believe she’s a shifter.

As they delve into the ancient Dragon Chronicles, tomes about dragons of all things, it soon becomes clear their efforts are no ordinary academic exercise. But no one actually believes dragons are real. Talk about ridiculous…

With the clock ticking, Lindy and Alex slam into their misconceptions about themselves, relationships, and dragons. They need to unite to begin the fight for their very existence or it won’t matter what they believe about dragons.

***If you like lighter paranormals on the sweeter side, this story is for you! She has a new job, surly fellow professor, a ridiculous dragon class, new friends, and an enemy who wants them dead. Oh, and she shifts into a dragon during an attack. Totally unexpected occurrence...

Wow! Lindy, Alex and What a World!

I LOVED this book! It is a longer read and SO worth the time. There is excellent world building and multiple journeys. Lindy is an elf, and a new teacher. This is an amazing story that both is about "learning" and a zillion other things. The blend of shifters, various other paranormal species, (including elves) and dragons works so well with the characters. Multiple secondary characters have strength and I am so enthralled with the world D.R. Grady has created. I want to know about the history and the times to come through the eyes of these professors and students at this college. The relationships take the concepts of shifting, mating, species that do (or don't do) both, and what an institution of learning can provide to a whole new level. There are plenty of action adventure on hand in a few major sub plots. I hope that this is the first in a series as I can see more adventures provided with all of the characters, especially Lindy, Alex, Keely, Hugh and so many others. The romance goes at an appropriate pace and I just was sorry when I got to the final page. I'm now a new fan of this author after reading this book.

Snap this up for a sustained and most satisfying paranormal romance/fantasy/shifter read! I grabbed a keeper copy as soon as it went live.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this author with this book, although I have read and enjoyed her other books (Morrison Family series), but this far exceeded my expectations. A well thought out paranormal book dealing with elves, regular humans, shifters and many others, in a university-Paranormal University- setting. Odd events begin on the first page and continue even when most have a handle on what is occurring-Evil is rising as it always has, and a dragon is needed to stop the evil. But a dragon also needs a controller. Yet no one knows what the controller is since it's been many, many years since the evil had risen and been defeated by a dragon. This is where the romance enters, and it is very sweet. Sweet like you want for your daughters and granddaughters. And funny. I loved this book and am already into the second.

D R Grady has created a complex world where the normal paranormal rules don't exist. Shifters who don't shift, Elves who aren't elves and so much more. When evil strikes in this world an rarely seen before savior is created and that is what our story revolves around. While the book has the standard romance elements, boy meets girl, can't stand her, comes around, screws things up, only for a HEA to occur, it is the non-standard aspects of the story that keeps the reader reading. Don't get me wrong I loved the romance part but it was the rest that had me enthralled, keeping me up way to late into the night, reading the book. I cannot wait for the next in the series to see what happens.

As anyone who reviews books on a blog knows, you can get lots and lots of review requests. All too often, the requests I get are some form of form letter for a book that's not even remotely something I would be interested in. However occasionally, I get a request that gives me pause and has me stop and pay attention, actually doing more than hitting delete. This book is one such request and I am really glad that I did.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I mean, bears, elves, dragons, together? It seemed an odd mix, but ultimately it worked for me. The prologue threw me a bit, but once the story got going, I was totally in it. I couldn't believe how fast I read this book. The story is fairly fast paced, and stays on point throughout. There weren't a lot of sub plots or side bars going on to distract from the original story being told. If you have ever read a book with so many subplots you can't keep track, you can appreciate the beauty of a simply told story. Especially one that doesn't make you feel like you need to get or create a dictionary to keep track of unknown words or phrases.

The characters were well thought out and had some interesting quirks. The relationships and interactions between the characters felt natural and believable. There were several awesome secondary characters that I can't wait to see more of. As this is the first book in the series, I don't know whether the follow up ones will continue to be centered around Lindy and Alex or start branching off onto the other characters. I would be happy either way.

This book is classified on the Soul Mate Publishing website as strictly Fantasy, but personally I can make a case for Paranormal Romance or even Urban Fantasy. It's a clean romance, absolutely PG clean. But that doesn't change the overall dynamic between the two main characters. They go from a strong dislike of each other through the gamut of emotions all the way to love and commitment. Sounds like a romance to me. Why Urban Fantasy? For me, it's because this is a story set in modern-ish times in the area of Pennsylvania on the campus of an institute of higher learning. There are shifters, elves, and other folks, including humans living in a large group (hence city or urban). It was never spelled out, but this felt like a slightly alternate world to our own.

Overall, this was an original story and a great introduction to a new world. One that I would really like to spend some more time in. I already have a hint of a feeling of who one of the bad guys is and want to be able to confirm or deny my suspicions. I gave this book 5 stars for a surprisingly good story.

Thanks to the author for the opportunity to read and review the book.

Wonderful world building in this take on dragon shifters. The story takes place in a paranormal university setting. I liked seeing a variety of paranorms--elves, shifters, medees (a kind of mixed bag of talents), telekinetics, and of course the bad guys trying to end the world. The two lead characters dance around each other for quite some time before they realize that they are destined to be together.

Much of the book was predictable and seemed familiar. However, the author's writing style and influx of humor into the story made for some unique twists on a familiar tome. The whole idea of Dragon Chronicles being written magically for each successive generation adds to the freshness in the writing.

This is book 1 in the series. I will be interested in seeing if the rest of the series brings any new ideas for the seasoned paranormal reader.
